  • Incidence of soilborne diseases, as a major cause of failure of continuous monocropping becomes severe in recent years. For examples, recent epidemics of club root of chinese cabbage, white rot of garlic, bacterial wilt of potato, pepper phytophthora blight, tomato fusarium wilt and CGMMV of watermelon are the diseases that require urgent control measures. Reasons for the severe incidence of soilborne diseases are the simplified cropping system or continuous monocropping associated with allocation of major production areas of certain crop and year-round cultivation system that results in rapid degradation of soil environment. Neglect of breeding for disease resistance relative to giving much emphasis on high yield and good quality, and cultural methods putting first on the use of chemical fertilizers are thought to be the reason. Counter-measures against soilborne disease epidemics would become most effective when the remedies are seeded for individual causes. As long-term strategies, development of rational cropping system which fits local cropping and economic condition, development and supply of cultivars resistant to multiple diseases, and improvement of soil environment by soil conditioning are suggested. In short-term strategies, simple and economical soil-disinfestation technology, and quick and accurate forecasting methods for soilborne diseases are urgent matter far development. for these, extensive supports are required in governmental level for rearing soilborne disease specialists and activation of collaborating researches to solve encountering problems of soilborne diseases.

  • The accurate estimation of groundwater recharge is important for the proper management of groundwater systems. The widely used techniques of groundwater recharge estimation include water table fluctuation method, baseflow separation method, and annual water balance method. However, these methods can not represent the temporal-spatial variability of recharge resulting from climatic condition, land use, soil storage and hydrogeological heterogeneity because the methods are all based on the lumped concept and local scale problems. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to present an effective method for estimating groundwater recharge with spatial-temporal variability using the SWAT model which can represent the heterogeneity of the watershed. The SWAT model can simulate daily surface runoff, evapotranspiration, soil storage, recharge, and groundwater flow within the watershed. The model was applied to the Musimcheon watershed located in the upstream of Mihocheon watershed. Hydrological components were determined during the period from 2001 to 2004, and the validity of the results was tested by comparing the estimated runoff with the observed runoff at the outlet of the catchment. The results of temporal and spatial variations of groundwater recharge were presented here. This study suggests that variations in recharge can be significantly affected by subbasin slope as well as land use.

  • Purpose: This study derived the consumed power and load characteristics of a tillage operation performed in an upland field located in Seomyeon, Chuncheon, Rep. Korea, where potatoes and cabbages were cultivated in two crops. Methods: A plow and rotavator were mounted on a tractor with 23.7 kW of rated power to perform the tillage operation. The work conditions were determined, considering the actual working speed of the tillage operation performed by the local farmers. The power consumption of the rear axle, engine, and power take-off (PTO), PTO torque, and tractive force were measured under each work condition. The consumed power and load characteristics were analyzed using their average values. Results: The rotary-tillage operation consumed more engine power than the plow operation for the same tractor-transmission gear condition. The PTO in the rotary-tillage operation and the rear axle in the plow operation consumed the most power. The power consumption of the engine and the PTO for the rotary-tillage operation tended to increase as the transmission gears of the tractor and the PTO became higher. In contrast, the rear-axle power consumption was insignificant. In addition, the PTO torque tended to rise as the tilling pitch increased. For the plow operation, the drawbar power and the rear axle power accounted for 68-90% of the engine power. The engine and rear axle power, drawbar power, and tractive force tended to rise as the working speed increased. Conclusions: The power consumption and load characteristics differed for the plow and rotary-tillage operations. They may also differ depending on the soil conditions. Therefore, the power consumption and load characteristics in various work environments and regions should be analyzed, and reflected in the design of tractors and working implements. The results derived from this study can be used as a reference for such designs.

  • Recently, global warming by greenhouse gas effect is getting danger and danger for human life and agriculture at present. In Indonesia, according to heavy rain in the agriculture land is often covered by excess water in result crop growth would be affected negative. This water stress triggers roots failure in anaerobic condition for upland crop because of limiting roots respiration. Chili pepper grows in upland sometimes in touch with waterlogging due to rainfall and /or over flow water from river in Indonesia. In this case, roots growing is inhibited by effect of shortage of oxygen at root cap. Therefore, the objective of this study is to observe the plant behavior in waterlogging using mahor local genotypes (Ferosa, Laris, Romario) in Sumatra. The experiment was kept by at 1cm depth water above the soil surface as a waterlogged treatment for ---days. As a result, waterlogging affected plant growth of chili negatively, especially for roots growth. Almost roots were getting bad and changed color for brown during waterlogging. A significant negative effect for nutrient absorption by roots was found in dry weight of all varieties during waterlogging. Dry weight of roots was decreased by 81.4% and 67.6%, and those of aerial part decreased by 74% and 67.2% compared with control in Ferosa and Romario at 1week after treatment. On the other hand, dry weight of roots was decreased only 35% in Laris. Therefore, Laris has a tolerance for waterlogging compared to with other varieties. Also, Laris in SPAD value was kept initial level during waterlogging however those of Ferosa and Romario decreased. Finally, due to impact of waterlogging, it may be the roots become failure because of less aerenchyma formation under anaerobic condition. We need confirm aerenchyma formation morphologically in the future.

  • Eeffect of temperature (3-day or 7-day treatment under $15^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$) on chlorophyll, nitrogen and potassium content in the second leaf blade from top of IR667 line (Suwon 213 and 214) and leading local varieties (Jinheung and Paldal) was investigated at the end of nursery, maximum tillering and flowering stage using phytotron. 1. Chlorophyll content was higher in IR667 line than in the local at $25^{\circ}C$ but reversed at $20^{\circ}C$ or $15^{\circ}C$ and chlorophyll a/b value was always high in the local. 2. Chlorophyll content per fresh weight decreased with growth and low temperature effect was greater at the end of nursery and on chlorophyll a than on chlorophyll b. 3. Chlorophyll a/b value increases with the increase of chlorophyll content and the increasing rate of chl. a/b value per chlorophyll increment tends to decrease under unfavorable condition. This decrease is greater in low temperature sensitive IR667 than local varieties. 4. According to chlorophyll retention value IR667 line was weaker at low temperature. 5. The content of total nitrogen or soluble nitrogen (methanol soluble) was decreased by low temperature. 6. Chl. (a+b)/S-N value decreased with growth and seemed not to be greatly affected by temperature and always higher in the local. 7. Potassium content (total or methanol soluble) tends to decrease at low temperature and soluble K increased with chlorophyll content. 8. High yielding ability of IR667 seems to be attributable to its high chlorophyll content at high temperature and easy leaf discoloration by low temperature or by nitrogen depression of IR667 seems to be attributable to the low Chl./S-N value.

  • More recently, there have been significant changes in the forms of channels due to runoff characteristics driven by climate changes and other alterations in basin/channel environments. Particularly, increasing local deposition in major channels is being observed nationwide. Of such phenomena, it is noteworthy that flood-plains show unidirectional growth and lowering of channels within compound channels in the form of a high-flow plain. These changes are supposed to affect management of the river ecology as well as flood control. In this study, the research on channels in Korea confirmed that the phenomenon of local deposition in those channels is actually taking place, rendering a problem to be urgently addressed. Previous studies on bed changes have been focused on low channels based on bed materials distributed over the channels. However, this research has proved that surface-layer deposition of a high-flow plain is closely related with changes in the conditions of ground surfaces and, ultimately, affects the bed of the entire channel as well. According to the intensive research on the condition of the high-flow plain of the mouth of the Han River, the silt deposited in the high-flow plain was the main cause of settlement/growth of vegetation. And this leads to landforming along with woods-forming, disturbing flood control as well as the normal river ecology.

  • Recently, Both rapid economic growth and high-quality native finishing materials demand in buildings such as local infrastructure facilities and cultural facilities have increased along with local quarries. So, increasing local quarries and environmental pollution occurred in quarries get the eyes to damaged area of the surroundings. As an example, carcinogen such as solid formed to fixing asbestos and dust have damaged to local resident. Especially, Radon gas released from asbestos can exist everywhere on earth, released soil and rock as radioactive substances, can be caused lung cancer followed by a smoking. When pollution source to indoor air quality that lacking ventilation rate of the residential building moved in a cycle, human responses such as headache, dizziness, etc. get appear, so on it threatened resident's physical condition. Thus, we need to urgent attention to reduction harmful substance. In the case of radon gas of the pollution source to indoor air quality in housing, it has characteristic that keep on going through half-life released from source, we need to control radon gas source than source removal. We set on vermiculite addition ratio to 10% which has harmful substances adsorption performance, proceed experiment to basalt waste rock addition ratio 50, 60, 70, 80(%). The result of an experiment, based on 'KS F 4035, precast terrazzo', we can be obtainable in the best terrazzo at basalt waste rock addition ratio 70%.

  • As household and industrial wastes continue to rapidly increase every year, the demands for landfill sites are also increasing. However, the construction of landfill sites causes many problems due to the high costs of liners, while the leachate from the landfills generates secondary contamination of surrounding lands and groundwater. The purpose of this study is to determine the proper mixing ratio to meet the liner conditions (must be less than $1{\times}10^{-7}cm/sec$), using the local soil as the main material and using fly ash, bentonite, and cement as the mixing materials. The possibility of using this mixture as the liner for landfill sites was examined. To determine the proper mixing ratio, this study conducted basic physical properties tests, compaction tests, consolidation tests, and uniaxial compression tests. It was found that the higher the ratio of bentonite, the lower the coefficient of permeability, and the higher the ratio of fly ash, the higher the coefficient of permeability. The reason for this is that, while bentonite expands and fills pores, fly ash cannot fill the pores because the particles have a round shape and do not have adhesion. In conclusion, the optimum coefficient of permeability that meets the landfill liner condition was obtained when the ratio of bentonite was 15% or higher. If fly ash was mixed, the landfill liner condition was met when the ratio of bentonite was 15% or higher and the ratio of fly ash was 20% or lower.

  • PS(Prestressed) tendons are under high tensile stress and have a smaller concrete cover than RC(Reinforced Concrete) member, so that the more conservative specifications on corrosion have been proposed for PS member. In this study, three levels of chloride concentrations(0.0 mol/l, 0.125 mol/l, and 0.25 mol/l) were prepared for evaluating the corrosion behavior in different position of 7 strand wires. For accelerating corrosion and measuring the corrosion amount in tendon, the tendon was embedded in partially saturated soil, and HCP(Half Cell Potential) was measured from the soil surface. During the test period of 28 weeks, HCP was measured every two weeks and the corrosion weight in the tendon was measured at 16 and 28 weeks of test period. Through the test, HCP result in tendon increased as the wires were located toward bottom due to high saturation. HCP in the lowest wire position showed an increase by 5.92 % compared to that in top position in 0.25 mol/l condition. The lower the position of the wire contained more saturation, which yielded increasing corrosion amount and HCP in tendon. In addition, the relation between corrosion weight and chloride concentration was quantitatively obtained through regression analysis.

  • Thirty-six barley varieties including Korean modern and local varieties were tested for drought-tolerance in the field of plastic rain shelter, Drought treatment was initiated at initial tillering stage (March 27, 2002) by withholding irrigation and lasted until harvest. Soil water potential maintained at around -0.05㎫ in the control plot and varied from -0.05㎫ (at the initial stage of drought treatment) to -0.29㎫ in the drought treatment plot. At forty days after drought treatment, relative water content (RWC), osmotic potential (OP), osmotic adjustment (OA), and $^{13}\textrm{C}$ discrimination ($\Delta$) were measured and then plants were sampled for leaf area index (LAI) and dry weight (DW). Barley was harvested at maturity for determining DW, grain yield, 1000 grains weight and number of spikelet. The tested varieties revealed wide spectrum of drought tolerance. Dongbori-1, Chalbori, Changyeongjaerae, Samdobori and Weolseong 87-31 showed strong drought-tolerance while Songhagbori and Suwonmaeg360 showed weak drought-tolerance. The drought injury indexes (drought/control ratio) of DW and yield revealed significant positive correlation with leaf RWC in drought treatment plot and $\Delta$ in the control plot, but obvious negative correlation with leaf OP and OA under drought condition. In addition, all the drought indexes of OP, $\Delta$ and RWC showed obvious positive correlation with the drought injury indexes of DW, 1000 grain weight and yield. Thus, OP and RWC under drought condition and $\Delta$ under well-watered condition would be used as the evaluation criteria for drought- tolerance of barley genotypes. However, further investigation is needed for the relationship between $\Delta$ and drought-tolerance as the other reports were not consistent with our result.
