  • One of the most difficult tasks in pavement management information systems is establishing the links between performance measures of a structure and the design and construction inputs. In-situ pavement performance can be considered a response variable to many project input variables, such as design, construction, and traffic loading effects. If we are to fully understand the component of pavement performance and specify the inputs through design and construction specifications to achieve that performance we must develop quantitative relationship between input and response variables through a scientific, fully integrated Pavement Performance Analysis System (PPAS). Hence, the objective of this study is to design a database model required for developing an effective database template that will allow analysis of pavement performance measures based on design and construction information linked by location. In order to select the most appropriate database model, a conceptual database model (Entity Relationship Model) and dimensional model, which is believed to be the most effective modeling technique for data warehouse project, are designed and compared. It is believed that other state highway agencies could adopt the proposed design strategy for implementing a PPAS at the discretion of the state highway agencies.

  • The current seismic design code prescribes that a structural wall should be designed as a special shear wall when the building height is more than 60 m and its seismic design category is classified as D. However, the use of a special shear wall has a negative effect on constructability and economic efficiency. In the present study, the seismic performance of a special shear wall and a special shear wall with relaxed reinforcement detail was evaluated through a cyclic reversal loading test. The specimens were constructed to measure the results of the experimental variable regarding the reinforcement details of the special boundary element. Next, the seismic performances of a special shear wall structural system and that of a special shear wall structural system with relaxed reinforcement detail was evaluated by methods proposed in the FEMA P695. The cyclic reversal loading test results of this study showed that the performance of the shear wall with relaxed reinforcement detail was almost similar to the performance of a special shear wall and has the performance which requested from standard. The results of the seismic evaluation showed that all special shear walls with relaxed reinforcement detail are satisfied with the design code and seismic performance.

  • Three-dimensional panels are one of the modern construction systems which can be placed in the category of industrial buildings. There have always been a lot of studies and efforts to identify the behavior of these panels and improve their capacity due to their earthquake resistance and high speed of performance. This study will provide a comparative evaluation of behavior of updated three-dimensional panel's structural components under lateral load in both independent and dependent modes. In fact, this study tries to simultaneously evaluate strengthening effect of three-dimensional panels and the effects of system state (independent, L-shaped and BOX shaped Walls) with reinforcement armatures with different angles on the three-dimensional panels. Overall, six independent wall model, L-shaped, roofed L-shaped, BOX-shaped walls with symmetric loading, BOX -shaped wall with asymmetrical loading and roofed BOX-shaped wall were built. Then the models are strengthened without strengthened reinforcement and with strengthened reinforcements with an angle of 30, 45 and 60 degrees. The applied lateral loading, is exerted by changing the location on the end wall. In BOX-shaped wall, in symmetric and asymmetric loading, the load bearing capacity will be increased about 200 and 50% respectively. Now, if strengthened, the load bearing capacity in symmetric and asymmetric loading will be increased 3.5 and 2 times respectively. The effective angle of placement of strengthened reinforcement in the independent wall is 45 and 60 degrees. But in BOX-shaped and L-shaped walls, the use of strengthened reinforcement 45 degrees is recommended.

  • In this study, the fire resistance performance of a simple support composite beam, which was sprayed with fire protection coatings, was evaluated. Primary valuables of the study are loading and unloading, shape of composite beam and metal lath of the web. The thickness of the fire protection coating to the three hour resistance is 40mm, but the fire resistance test was performed with 25mm coatings. The test result showed that TSC composit beams with 25mm fire protection coatings can resist on fire for three hours at the both loading and unloading tests. Average and maximum temperatures were less than $250^{\circ}C$ and $310^{\circ}C$ respectively, compared with the standard temperatures for fire resistance on the loading and unloading tests.

  • To acquire enhanced adsorption capacity for especially targeted VOCs, activated carbon fiber of which surface area was $1,100m^2/g$ was selected and active metals were loaded. After screening study, Cr and Cu were selected as a base metal for improving adsorption capacity of activated carbon fiber. For acquiring better performance, metal loading, loading temperature, loading hours and kinds of loaded metals were changed as preparing variables. Properties measurement and adsorption capacity evaluation were performed. We found that the best conditions for metal loading were 5 hours loading at $100^{\circ}C$ and the adsorption capacity was enhanced almost double. Also we confirmed that more than 0.5 seconds contact time is needed for best adsorbate diffusion and adsorption over activated carbon fiber.

  • Managing the growing number of data generated through various processes requires the aid of Database Management System (DBMS) to efficiently handle the huge amount of data. These data can be inserted into database m real time or in batch, that come from multiple sources, including those that are coming from inside and outside of a network. The insertion of large amount of data is commonly done through specific bulk loading or insertion function supplied by each individual DBMS. In this paper, we analyze and evaluate on handling data bulk loading for heterogeneous systems that is organised as multi-tiered architecture and compare the result of DBMS bulk loader against program insertion from a software development perspective. We propose a hybrid solution using staging database that can be easily deployed for enhancing bulk loading performance compared to insertion by application.

  • This paper presents the results of investigation on the effects of foundation stiffness and surface loading on the performance of soil-reinforced segmental retaining walls using the finite element method of analysis. A parametric study was performed by varying the foundation stiffness and the location of surface loading. The results of the analyses indicate that the wall deformation and reinforcement tensile load tend to increase with decreasing foundation stiffness with little variation in the horizontal and vertical stress distributions at the back and the base of the reinforced soil zone. Also revealed is that the increment of reinforcement tensile load due to the presence of surface load may be significantly over-estimated when using the conventional approach. Furthermore, the external stability should be carefully examined when a surface loading is present just behind the reinforced soil zone. The implications of the findings from this study to current design approaches are discussed in detail.

  • The treatment of high-strength swine wastewater by anaerobic digestion combined with an aquatic plant system was investigated. Anaerobic digestion of swine wastewater gave volatile solids (VS) removal efficiencies of 43.3%, 52.1% and 54.5% for hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of 20, 30, 40 days, respectively. The removal efficiencies of VS, total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) and soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) decreased with increasing VS volumetric loading rate (VLR). Higher organic removal efficiency was observed at longer HRTs for the same VS volumetric loading rate. As VS volumetric loading rate increased, biogas production increased and the methane content of the biogas decreased. Experiments using duckweed (Lemna species) as an aquatic macrophyte gave the following results. In the case of nitrogen, removal efficiency was above 60% and effluent concentration was below 10.0 mg/L when the influent ammonia-N loading was about $1.0\;g/m^2/day$. In the case of phosphorus, removal efficiency was above 55% and effluent concentration was below 2.0 mg/L when the influent $PO_4$-P loading was about $0.15\;g/m^2/day$. In addition, crude protein and phosphorus content of duckweed biomass increased from 15.6% to 41.6% and from 0.8% to 1.6%, respectively, as the influent nutrient concentration increased. The treatment of high-strength swine wastewater by anaerobic digestion combined with an aquatic plant system offers good performance in terms of organics and nutrient removal for relatively low operation and maintenance costs. The results indicate that under appropriate operational conditions, the effluent quality is within the limits set by Korean discharge criteria.

  • When channel state information (CSI) is available at the transmitter, the system throughput can be enhanced by adaptive transmissions and opportunistic multiuser scheduling. In this paper, we consider multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems employing bit-interleaved coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (BIC-OFDM). We first propose a bit-loading algorithm based on the Levin-Campello algorithm for the BIC-OFDM. Then we will apply this algorithm to the MIMO system with a finite set of constellations, by reassigning residual power on each stream Simulation results show that proposed bit-loading scheme which takes the residual power into account improves the system performance especially at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) range.

  • In order to realize a practical VOD system, it is necessary for a high-capacity and cost-effective hierarchical VOD server based on tertiary storages such as DVD jukebox. In such a system, it is possible to transfer multiple streams to users by alternatively swapping DVDs using the fixed number of drives. But it takes a long time for loading DVD to a drive. In this paper, we propose a primitive pipelined loading mechanism for hiding the loading time to swap DVDs in a hierarchical VOD server based on DVD jukebox. We also propose a enhanced pipelined loading mechanism for increasing the maximum admittable streams with the fixed number of drives. The enhanced mechanism caches the initial segment of each stream on a disk storage allowing faster data transfer. The performance analysis shows that the proposed mechanisms can admit the maximum allowed stream capacity under the fixed number of disk drives.
