Modeling and analyzing the dynamic behavior of fluid-soil-structure interaction problems are crucial in structural engineering. The solution to such coupled engineering systems is often not achievable through analytical modeling alone, and a numerical solution is necessary. Generally, the Finite Element Method (FEM) is commonly used to address such problems. However, when dealing with coupled problems with complex geometry, the finite element method may not precisely represent the geometry, leading to errors that impact solution quality. Recently, Isogeometric Analysis (IGA) has emerged as a preferred method for modeling and analyzing complex systems. In this study, IGA based on Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS) is employed to analyze the seismic behavior of concrete gravity dams, considering fluid-structure-foundation interaction. The performance of IGA is then compared with the classical finite element solution. The computational efficiency of IGA is demonstrated through case studies involving simulations of the reservoir-foundation-dam system under seismic loading.
The objective of this paper was to discuss the seismic performance of hybrid FRP-steel reinforced concrete shear wall with replaceable friction dampers at the feet of the wall. The hysteretic characteristics of five wall specimens were studied by pseudo-static loading tests. The results showed that the damage of the specimens was concentrated on the friction dampers, and the energy consumption capacity was increased while making up for the defect of low ductility of FRP reinforced wall specimens. And the repairability of the wall after earthquake was improved. Finally, a calculation method of initial stiffness of shear wall with replaceable dampers was proposed.
The soil nailing method entails the utilisation of nails to reinforce and stabilise a zone of soil mass. This is widely used for various applications due to its effective performance under various loading conditions. The seismic response of 6m high vertical soil-nailed cut in various site classes under dynamic excitations has been investigated in this study considering various lengths and inclinations of nails. The influence of frequency content of dynamic excitation on the response of structure has been assessed through finite element analysis using time history data of three different earthquakes. The seismic stability of the nailed cut in retaining soil in various sites under El Centro, Kobe and Trinidad earthquake ground motion is evaluated based on maximum acceleration response, maximum horizontal deformation, earth pressure distribution on the wall and maximum axial force mobilised in nails. The optimum nail inclination is identified as 15° and a minimum nail length ratio of 0.7 is essential for a stable vertical cut under dynamic excitations.
The thermal runaway phenomenon in lithium-ion batteries hinders their large-scale application and leads to safety issues, including smoke, fire, and explosion. Therefore, early warning systems must be employed rapidly and reliably to ensure user safety, with methods for detecting gases such as hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and hydrocarbons-all indicators of the thermal runaway process-considered a promising approach. In particular, metal-oxide-semiconductor-based gas sensors can be used to monitor target gases owing to their high response, fast response, and facile integration. In this paper, we review various strategies for enhancing the performance of metal-oxide-semiconductor-based gas sensors, including nanostructure design, catalyst loading, and composite design. Future perspectives on employing metal-oxide-semiconductor-based gas sensors to monitor thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries are also discussed.

Experimental work of batch-type dryer was conducted to develop its optimurm operating conditions by analyzing the major factors which affect the drying performance. A laboratory batch-type dryer was constructed and tested for various levels of heated-air rates, and depths of grain deposit. Tong-il rice variety having the initial moisture content of approximaely 23 per cent in wet basis was used for the experiment. The criteria selected for establishing the optimum operating condition were the drying performance rate, the thermal efficiency, and the operational cost of the dryer. The results of the study are summarized as follows: 1. The performance rate of dryer for a specific operating condition was defined as total amount of material dried per hour when the moisture content of grains in the upperlayer reaches to 16 per cent in wet basis. The optimum operating conditions as viewed in the rate of drying performance could be justified by functional realtionship between the depth of grain deposit and air flow rate. In other words, there was a definite depth of grain deposit for a given air-rate which make the dryer performance maximum. The optimum grain depth for the batch-type dryer with 3.3㎡ loading area and with the attached axial fan was about 35cm. 2. The thermal efficiency for the dryer was evaluated by the ratio of the latent heat required to evaporate the grain moisture to the heat input required to raise the ambient air-temperature to 40 degree centigrade. The optimum operating condition as viewed in term of thermal efficiency analyzed was that grater depth and lower air flow-rate may be desirable. This condition is contracted with the optimum condition as viewed by the dryer performance rate. 3. The annual operating cost of batch-type dryer was analyzed for different annual hour of use and for different operation condition. The optimum condition as viewed in terms of operating cost was almost identical to one as viewed in terms of dryer performance rate. Therefore, the most economical use of batch-type dryer for the same annual operating hours can be obtained when the dryer operated in the condition of maximum dryer performance rate. Increasing the annual operating hour may be desirable to cut down the dryer operation cost, since the annual hour of dryer use is much sensitive to the operating cost than any peractical conditions of dryer operation. 4. The most desirable operational condition as justified by combining all the criteria, dryer performance rate, thermal efficiency and annual operating cost, could be concluded to operate the dryer in the condition of maximum performance rate. The condition in general is identical to the lowest operation cost for a given annual operating hour.

As a special infrastructure, it is important that the suspension bridges which were designed by using the cable are carefully maintained and safely inspected after their construction, more than what is done in other cases of bridge structures. However, the structural analysis for their design and maintenance has considered only the simplified geometric shape of the structure. Particularly, it is not easy to make the modeling analyze the bridge structure including detailed steel deck plates. In this paper, we evaluated the structural behaviors and performances of the completed earth-anchored suspension bridge that was in a completed state through both the tension of hanger member and their computational analysis. We considered the frame system and the detailed steel deck plates that were especially added into the modeling to take more precision analysis about it. We also applied hanger tensions converted by the natural frequency and the natural frequency of the bridge when in normal vibration. Results of the vehicle loading test were used in the analysis. We compared the results by using our modeling with the result of the loading test and the hanger tension. Our prediction on the behavior of the structure emulates the behavior of the real structure. In applying the data measured by the typhoon "Maemi" which arrived in-land last year, we confirmed our analysis model for the possibility of applying effectively into the preliminary design and maintenance plan.

This paper presents experimental and analytical results on the long-term behavior of the reinforced recycled aggregate concrete beams under sustained loading. In this experimental program, three beams with different conditions of aggregates replacement (natural aggregate 100%, recycled coarse aggregate 100%, recycled fine aggregate 50%) were subjected to the sustained flexural loading that was a half of the nominal flexural capacity over a period of 1 year. The beam were designed with net span of 2,000 mm and rectangular cross-section of 170 mm width and 170 mm effective depth. The beams were instrumented and monitored to observe the change in the long-term behavior due to creep and shrinkage of concrete under sustained loading. The predictions of long-term deflection by ACI code, Branson, Mayer, Neville, EMM and AEMM were compared with the experimental results. From the experimental results, the reinforced concrete beams with recycled aggregates showed the same performance as that of a beam with natural aggregate. The proposed method to predict the long-term deflections of reinforced recycled aggregate concrete beams gives a good estimation for experimental results.

Constructed wetlands are being used for the removal of nutrients from livestock wastewater. However, natural vegetation typically used in constructed wetlands does not have marketable value. As an alternative, agronomic plants grown under flooded or saturated soil conditions that promote denitrification can be used. Studies on constructed wetlands for swine wastewater were conducted in wetland cells that contained either natural wetland plants or a combination of soybeans and rice for two years with the objective of maximum nitrogen reduction to minimize the amount of land required for terminal treatment. Three systems, of two 3.6 by 33.5 m wetland cells connected in series were used; two systems each contained a different combination of emergent wetland vegetation: rush/bulrush (system 1) and bur-reed/cattail (system 2). The third system contained soybean (Glycine max) in saturated-soil-culture (SSC) in the first cell, and flooded rice (Oryza sativa) in the second cell. Nitrogen (N) loading rates of 3 and $10kg\;ha^{-1}\;day^{-1}$ were used in the first and second years, respectively. These loading rates were obtained by mixing swine lagoon liquid with fresh water before it was applied to the wetland. The nutrient removal efficiency was similar in the rush/bulrush, bur-reed/cattails and agronomic plant systems. Mean mass removal of N was 94 % at the loading rate of $3kg\;N\;ha^{-1}\;day^{-1}$ and decreased to 71% at the higher rate of $10kg\;N\;ha^{-1}\;day^{-1}$. The two years means for above-ground dry matter production for rush/bulrushes and bur-reed/cattails was l2 and $33Mg\;ha^{-1}$, respectively. Flooded rice yield was $4.5Mg\;ha^{-1}$ and soybean grown in saturation culture yielded $2.8Mg\;ha^{-1}$. Additionally, the performance of seven soybean cultivars using SSC in constructed wetlands with swine wastewater as the water source was evaluated for two years, The cultivar Young had the highest yield with 4.0 and $2.8Mg\;ha^{-1}$ in each year, This indicated that production of acceptable soybean yields in constructed wetlands seems feasible with SSC using swine lagoon liquid. Two microcosms studies were established to further investigate the management of constructed wetlands. In the first microcosm experiment, the effects of swine lagoon liquid on the growth of wetland plants at half (about 175 mg/l ammonia) and full strength (about 350 mg/l ammonia) was investigated. It was concluded that wetland plants can grow well in at least half strength lagoon liquid. In the second microcosm experiment, sequencing nitrification-wetland treatments was studied. When nitrified lagoon liquid was added in batch applications ($48kg\;N\;ha^{-1}\;day^{-1}$) to wetland microcosms the nitrogen removal rate was four to five times higher than when non-nitrified lagoon liquid was added. Wetland microcosms with plants were more effective than those with bare soil. These results suggest that vegetated wetlands with nitrification pretreatment are viable treatment systems for removal of large quantities of nitrogen from swine lagoon liquid.
The repeated loading responses of four shear-critical reinforced concrete beams with two different shear span-to-depth ratios, were studied. One series of beams was reinforced using pairs of bundled stirrups with $90^{\circ}$ standard hooks, haying free end extensions of $6d_b$. The companion beams contained shear reinforcement made with larger diameter headed bars anchored with 50mm diameter circular heads. A single headed bar had the same area as a pair of bundled stirrups and hence the two series were comparable. The test results indicate that beams containing headed bar stirrups have a superior performance to companion beams containing bundled standard stirrups with improved ductility, larger energy absorption and enhanced post-peak load carrying capability. Due to splitting of the concrete cover and local crushing, the hooks of the standard stirrups opened resulting in loss of anchorage. In contrast, the headed bar stirrups did not lose their anchorage and hence were able to develop strain hardening and also served to delay buckling of the flexural compression steel. Excellent load-deflection predictions were obtained by reducing the tension stiffening to account for repeated load effects.
Nanophase catalyst layer for direct methanol fuel cell has been fabricated by magnetron sputtering method. Catalyst metal targets and carbon were sputtered simultaneously on the Nafion membrane surface at abnormally higher gas (Ar/He mixture) pressure than that of normal thin film processing. They could be coated as a novel structure of catalyst layer containing porous PtRu or Pt and carbon particles both in nanometer range. Membrane electrode assembly made with this layer led to a reduction of the catalyst loading. At the catalyst loading of 1.5mg $PtRu/cm^2$ for anode and 1mg $Pt/cm^2$ for cathode, it could provide $45 mW/cm^2$ in the operation at 2 M methanol, 1 Bar Air at 80"C. It is more than $30\%$ increase of the power density performance at the same level of catalyst loading by conventional method. This was realized due to the ultra fine particle sizes and a large fraction of the atoms lie on the grain boundaries of nanophase catalyst layer and they played an important role of fast catalyst reaction kinetics and more efficient fuel path. Commercialization of direct methanol fuel cell for portable electronic devices is anticipated by the further development of such design.
