  • This experimental investigation was conducted to examine the seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge columns. The columns were subjected to a constant axial load and a cyclic horizontal load-inducing reversed bending moment. The variables studied in this research are the volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement (ps = 0.96, 1.44 per cent) and axial load ratio (0.05, 0.1, 0.2 P/Po) and strength $(350kgf/cm^2,\;600kgf/cm^2)$. Test results show that bridge columns with 50 per cent higher amounts of transverse reinforcement than that required by seismic provisions of ACI 318-02 showed ductile behaviour. For bridge columns with axial load ratio(P/Po) less than 0.2, the ratio of Mmax over Mad, nominal moment capacity predicted by ACI 318-02 provisions, is consistently greater than 1 with approximately a 20 percent margin of safty.

  • This paper discussed the shape effect of ceramic support carrier in order to facilitate biomass immobilization. The shape of ceramic support carrier was modified hollow pipe type into hollow gear type. After seeding, microorganisms were attached in crevices where protection from shear forces or surfaces where easy to contact with support carrier surface. In case of hollow gear type carrier, initial attachment rate was faster than that of hollow pipe type and obtained thick biofilm. Synthetic wastewater(COD:75~880 mg/L, organic loading rate:0.36~4.22 kgCOD/㎥.d) was treated aerobic fixed bed biofilm reactor where 100% of the volume was filled with the ceramic carrier. COD removal efficiency of reactor filled with gear type support carrier was a little high withing 70 days, and then showed similar removal efficiency. It was found that highly loaded operation with up to 4.22 kgCOD/㎥.d was possible in both reactor. Total biomass amounts of pipe type was higher than gear type, however, attached biomass of gear type was higher than that of pipe type.

  • An islanding occurs when the utility grid is removed but distributed sources continuo to operate and provide power to local loads and grid. This can cause a significant risk to safety and equipment. This report present a novel anti-islanding method to prevent an islanding phenomenon. The proposed method changes the reactive power of the load. Therefore the phase difference between output voltage and current is periodically changed within decided value. When the utility-grid is removed, the frequency of output voltage and current will increase or decrease. And the proposed system will detect the change of frequency and shut down the distributed source. While the conventional methods have some difficulties in detecting particular islanding condition such as a small change in loading, the proposed method can detect most conditions. The performance was verified through experiments.

  • The second paper, Part 2, describes the field testing of IEEE type PSS2A EX2000 excitation in the Dangjin 612 MVA T/P #4. The final PSS gain, $K_s$, was determined by inputting 2%-step signals into AVR at a loading of 500MW and increasing $K_s$, from 0 to 15 in increments of 3. After the field testing, the measured data was also analyzed by Discrete Fourier Transformation(DFT) analysis, and the model parameters of generation system were verified by replicating the measured data with the transient stability program.

  • This paper deal with the design of noncontact In-process measurement system which measures the surface roughness during cylindrical grinding. The measuring system is extremely simple and the apparatus proposed is composed of a laser unit, photodetector and optical system. The experimental performance of the apparatus is satisfactory and good results are expected in the actual use. During operation, the surface of a workpiece Is continuously scanned by a laser beam. The experimental results show that the presence of chattering, loading and glazing can be detected sensitively along both circumferential and feed directions and the surface roughness value is obtained from the reading along the feed direction.

  • The container load planning is one of key factors for efficient operations of handling equipments at container ports. When the number of containers are large, finding a good solution using the conventional genetic algorithm is very time consuming. To obtain a good solution with considerably small effort, in this paper a pseudo-parallel genetic algorithm(PPGA) based on both the migration model and the ring topology is developed The performance of the PPGA is demonstrated through a test problem of determining the optimal loading sequence of the containers.

  • In this paper a new buck-boost type DC-DC converter is presented. Its voltage gain is positive, all active elements operate under soft-switching condition independent of loading, magnetic isolation and self output short-circuit protection exist, and very fast dynamic operation is achievable by a simple bang-bang controller. This converter also exhibits appropriate PFC characteristics since its input current is inherently proportional to the source voltage. When the voltage source is off-line, it is sufficient to add an inductor after the rectifier, then near unity power factor is achievable. All essential guidelines to design the converter as a DC-DC and a PFC regulator are presented. Simulation and experimental results verify the developed theoretical analysis.

  • This paper proposes a new robust decentralized power oscillation dampers (POD) design of doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) wind turbine for damping of low frequency electromechanical oscillations in an interconnected power system. The POD structure is based on the practical $2^{nd}$-order lead/lag compensator with single input. Without exact mathematical model, the inverse output multiplicative perturbation is applied to represent system uncertainties such as system parameters variation, various loading conditions etc. The parameters optimization of decentralized PODs is carried out so that the stabilizing performance and robust stability margin against system uncertainties are guaranteed. The improved firefly algorithm is applied to tune the optimal POD parameters automatically. Simulation study in two-area four-machine interconnected system shows that the proposed robust POD is much superior to the conventional POD in terms of stabilizing effect and robustness.

  • This paper describes a mini linear optical pickup actuator. To reduce the size, inner yokes are designed to guide the mover and outer yokes of permanent magnets are removed. Magnetic circuit method is used to determine the thrust force. Virtual path method is proposed to analyze the open magnetic circuit analysis. The magnetic circuit of the proposed actuator can be a closed circuit due to the virtual path model of the outer magnetic flux. The validity of virtual path method is evaluated by comparing to the FEM analysis. Structural vibration is investigated using FEM and the design of the mover is modified to improve the vibration characteristic. Dynamic characteristic experiments shows that the performance of the proposed actuator is enough to be used as a coarse and fine seeking actuator simultaneously and the thrust force margin for loading a focusing actuator is guaranteed.

  • It is essential to analyze structural vibrations due to turbulent wall pressure fluctuations over a body surface which moves through a fluid, because the vibrations can be a severe source of noise affecting to passengers in airplanes and SONAR performance. Generally, this kind of problems have been solved for very simplified models, e.g. plates, which can be applied to the wavenumber domain analysis. In this paper, a finite element modeling of the walt pressure fluctuations is investigated, which can be applied to those over arbitrary smooth surfaces. It is found that the modeled wall pressure fluctuation at nodes becomes uncorrelated at higher frequencies and at lower flow speeds, and the response is over-estimated due to the aliased power. Then the frequency range available for uncorrelated loading model and two power correction schemes are presented.
