  • Stress concentration is an interesting and essential field of study, as it is the prime cause of failure of structural parts under static load. In the current paper, stress and strain concentration factors in unidirectional functionally graded (UDFGM) plate with central circular cutout are predicted by carrying out a finite element study on ANSYS APDL platform. The present study aims to bridge the lacuna in the understandings of stress analysis in perforated functionally graded plates. It is found that the material variation parameter is an important criterion while designing a perforated UDFGM plate. By selecting a proper material variation parameter and direction of material gradation, the stress and strain concentrations can be significantly reduced.

  • The most of original horizontal bearing capacity theory of the pile is not efficiently to consider interaction between soil and pile because it is only to consider the earth pressure theory and separately the ground form pile. In recent, in order to improve the pile technology, it is necessary to confirm the real behaviour characteristics of pile under lateral load. Hence, to evaluate the behaviour characteristics of the single and group pile under lateral loads using the strain wedge model that could consider the interaction between soil and piles. Primarily, laboratory scale down model tests was carried out to predict the behaviour characteristics on real size piles using the strain wedge model. The comparative analyses between model test and numerical analysis for the evaluation of whole behaviour were conducted.

  • In 2017, multimodal transportation tests for evaluating road, sea, and rail transport were performed by research institutes in the US, Spain, and the Republic of Korea. In this study, acceleration and strain data determined through road and sea tests were analyzed. It was investigated whether the load generated for each transport mode was amplified or attenuated according to the load transfer path. From the results, it was confirmed that the load transfer characteristics differed according to the transportation mode and loading path. The effects of strain determined through each test on the structural integrity of the spent nuclear fuel were also investigated. It was found that the magnitude of the measured strain had a negligible effect on the structural integrity of the spent nuclear fuel, considering its fatigue strength. The results for the acceleration and strain data analyses obtained in this study will be useful for scheduled domestic transportation tests under normal transport conditions.

  • The most important elements in flexible pavement design criteria are stress and strain distributions. To obtain reasonable stress and strain distributions in pavements, moving wheel loads must be applied to analyze the pavement responses. In this study, finite element analysis was used to identify the three-dimensional states using the vehicle load into a constant-position / time-variable load (25, 50 and 80km/hr). In an elastic system, the strain is the same in both longitudinal and transverse directions under a single wheel. However, the same is not necessary in a viscoelastic system. Test results showed that the maximum values between transverse and longitudinal strains the bottom of asphalt concrete base layers under 25km/hr were were about 40 percent.

  • Prestressed ground anchors are important structural elements in geotechnical engineering. Despite their widespread usage, the design process is often significantly simplified. One of the major drawbacks of commonly used design methods is the assumption that skin friction is mobilized uniformly along an anchor's fixed length, one consequence of which is that a progressive failure phenomenon is neglected. The following paper introduces an alternative design approach - a computer algorithm employing the load-transfer method. The method is modified for the analysis of anchors and combined with a procedure for the derivation of load-transfer functions based on commonly available laboratory tests. The load-transfer function is divided into a pre-failure (hardening) and a post-failure (softening) segment. In this way, an aspect of non-linear stress-strain soil behavior is incorporated into the algorithm. The influence of post-grouting in terms of radial stress update, diameter enlargement, and grout consolidation is included. The axial stiffness of the anchor body is not held constant. Instead, it gradually decreases as a direct consequence of tensile cracks spreading in the grout material. An analysis of the program's operation is performed via a series of parametric studies in which the influence of governing parameters is investigated. Finally, two case studies concerning three investigation anchor load tests are presented.

  • In this paper, a new method is suggested to analyze impulsive stresses at loading poing of concentrated impact load under certain impact conditions determined by impact velocity, stiffness of plate and mass of impact body, etc. The impulsive stresses are analyzed by using the three dimensional dynamic theory of elasticity so as to analytically clarify the generation phenomenon of cone crack at the impact fracture of fragile materials (to be discussed if the second paper). The Lagrange's plate theory and Hertz's law of contact theory are used for the analysis of impact load, and the approximate equation of impact load is suggested to analyze the impulsive stresses at the impact point to decide the ranage of impact load factor. When impact load factors are over and under 0.263, approximate equations are suggested to be F(t)=Aexp(-Bt)sinCt and F(t)=Aexp(-bt) {1-exp(Ct)} respectively. Also, the inverse Laplace transformation is done by using the F.F.T.(fast fourier transform) algorithm. And in order to clarity the validity of stress analysis method, experiments on strain fluctuation at impact point are performed on a supported square glass plate. Finally, these analytical results are shown to be in close agreement with experimental results.

  • Finite element method is very effective method to simulate the forming processes with good prediction of the deformation behaviour. In this paper, It was focussed on the drawability factors on the square cup deep drawing by PAM-STAMP with using magnesium alloy to reduce car weight as well as to draw much attention from the viewpoint of environmental preservation high rigidity, In order to predict the effect of drawability factors, the relationships between punch load and punch stroke, the relationships between thickness strain and distance, and are used. According to this study, the results of simulation will give engineers good information to access the drawability of square cup deep drawing at warm temperature.

  • In this paper, the initial behavior of transmission tower was analyzed. This tower was firstly constructed by rock anchor foundation in domestic 154 kV transmission line and wireless real-time monitoring system was installed to obtain the measured data for analysis of the structure behavior. For this purpose, 16 strain gauges was installed in anchors of foundation and strain gauges, clinometers, anemoscope and settlement sensors was installed at superstructure. As the results, the main factor which influence the behavior of superstructure is wind velocity, wind direction, rainfall and temperature change. Especially, the uplift load at stub of transmission structure revealed about 35.4 percentages of design load. Hereafter the long term stability will be analyzed.

  • Computer simulations of the mechanical behavior of 3 point bend specimens with a quarter notch under impact load are performed. This validity is found to be identified by the experimental proof. The cases with various loading rates applied at the side of the specimen are considered. An elastoplastic von Mises material model is chosen. Gap opening displacement, reaction force, crack tip opening displacement and strain rate are also compared with rate dependent material(visco-plastic material). The stability during various dynamic load can be seen by using the simulation of this study. These differences of the cases with various loading rates are also investigated.

  • Due to the self-similarity of Berkovich and conical indenters, different materials may show the same loaddepth curve for single indentation. In this study, we first compare the load-depth characteristics of conical and Berkovich indenters via finite element method. We also analyze the variation of load-depth curves with angle of Berkovich indenter, indentation parameters, and material properties. With numerical regressions of obtained data, we then propose dual-Berkovich indentation formulae for material property evaluation. The proposed approach provides the values of elastic modulus, yield strength and strain-hardening exponent and corresponding stress-strain curve with an average error of less than 3%. The method is valid for any elastic indenters made of tungsten carbide and diamond for instance.
