This paper deals with parametric studies of the structural response of underground LNG storage tanks according to change in design conditions. In the design of underground LNG storage tank, it is requited to determine the optimal tank shape and dimension to represent a more improved structural behavior under many loading conditions and load combinations. Consequently, main factors which affect to the structural response of LNG storage tanks from planning and design up to maintenance, are investigated, and the differences in structural behavior due to those factors are analyzed. On the basis of the obtained results item parametric studies, a guideline for a more reasonable design is introduced.
Progressive building collapse occurs when failure of a structural component leads to the failure and collapse of surrounding members, possibly promoting additional failure. Global system collapse will occur if the damaged system is unable to reach a new static equilibrium configuration. The most common type of primary failure which led to the progressive collapse phenomenon, is the sudden removal of a column by various factors. In this study, a method is proposed to prevent progressive collapse phenomena in structures subjected to removal of a single column. A vierendeel peripheral frame at roof level is used to redistribute the removed column's load on other columns of the structure. For analysis, quasi-static approach is used which considers various load combinations. This method, while economically affordable is easily applicable (also for new structures as well as for existing structures and without causing damage to their architectural requirements). Special emphasis is focused on the evolution of vertical displacements of column removal point. Even though additional stresses and displacements are experienced by removal of a structural load bearing column, the proposed method considerably reduces the displacement at the mentioned point and prevents the collapse of the structural frame.
The concept of Performance objective assessment is extended to wind engineering. This approach applies using the Database-Assisted Design technique, relying on the aerodynamic database provided by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). A structural model of a low-rise building is analyzed to obtain influence coefficients for internal forces and displacements. Combining these coefficients with time histories of pressure coefficients on the envelope produces time histories of load effects on the structure, for example knee and ridge bending moments, and eave lateral drift. The peak values of such effects are represented by an extreme-value Type I Distribution, which allows the estimation of the gust wind speed leading to the mean hourly extreme loading that cause specific performance objective compromises. Firstly a fully correlated wind field over large tributary areas is assumed and then relaxed to utilize the denser pressure tap data available but with considerably more computational effort. The performance objectives are determined in accordance with the limit state load combinations given in the ASCE 7-16 provisions, particularly the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) method. The procedure is then repeated for several wind directions and different dominant opening scenarios to determine the cases that produce performance objective criteria. Comparisons with two approaches in ASCE 7 are made.
This paper presents a numerical study on the flat plates in deep basements, subjected to out-of-plane floor load and in-plane compressive load due to soil and hydraulic lateral pressure. For nonlinear finite element analysis, a computer program addressing material and geometric nonlinearities is developed. The validity of the numerical model is established by comparison with existing experiments performed on plates simply supported on four edges. The flat plates to be studied are designed according to the Direct Design Method in Korean Building Code for Structural Concrete. Through numerical study on the effects of different load combinations and loading sequence, the load condition that governs the strength of the flat plates is determined. For the plates under the governing load condition, parametric studies are performed to investigate variations of the strength with reinforcement ratio, aspect ratio, concrete strength, and slenderness ratio. Based on the numerical results, the floor load magnification factor is proposed.

In this paper the reliability analyses of the cable-supported bridge design code which is recently issued in Korea are performed and the results are presented. Governing load combinations for the member design and the statistical properties of the main members are introduced and the analysis is performed using an example cable-stayed bridge for which the design is performed following the load and resistance factors defined in the design code. The reliability analysis shows the target reliability index can be achieved by applying load and resistance factors and the application of the resistance modification factor can enhance the reliability level if the importance of the bridge needs to be increased. The sensitivity analysis reveals that decreasing uncertainty of the cable strength is critical for obtaining the target reliability index. The study results show that the design using the load and resistance factors of the code can achieve the target reliability indexes for the design of cable supported bridge.
The load combinations in current KCI Design Code are determined with reference to those in ACI 318-05, which adopts the LRFD (load and resistance factor design) format. The load and resistance factors in LRFD format should be determined to meet the required levels of reliability index or probability of failure for various predetermined failure modes, which are also based on the statistical data reflecting locality and contemporary situation. However, the current KCI Design Code has been written utilizing foreign data, because of insufficiency in accrued data in Korea. This study considered the current safety levels of KCI Code based on published domestic data to evaluate appropriateness of the current KCI regulations. Based on the calibrated reliability index of the existing Code, the new resistance factors are suggested. The results presented in this paper can be considered as a basic research for establishment of unique design format for future Korean Codes.
Wind field in mountainous regions demonstrates unique distribution characteristic as compared with the wind field of the flat area, wind load and wind effect are the key considerations in structural design of television towers situated in mountainous regions. The television tower to be constructed is located at the top of Xiushan Mountain in Nanjing, China. In order to investigate the impact of terrain factors of hilltops on wind loads, firstly a wind tunnel test was performed for the mountainous area within 800m from the television tower. Then the tower basal forces such as bending moments and shear strength were obtained based on high frequency force balance (HFFB) test. Based on the experiments, the improved method for determining the load combinations was applied to extract the response distribution patterns of foundation internal force and peak acceleration of the tower top, then the equivalent static wind loads were computed under different wind angles, load conditions and equivalent goals. The impact of terrain factors, damping ratio and equivalent goals on the wind load distribution of a television tower was discussed. Finally the equivalent static wind loads of the television tower under the 5 most adverse wind angles and 5 most adverse load conditions were computed. The experimental method, computations and research findings provide important references for the anti-wind design of high-rise structure built on hilltops.
In this study, centrifuge tests were performed to investigate the effect of the lateral load-moment combination on the p-y curves for 7 m-diameter monopiles installed in sand for offshore wind turbine. For the objectives, a centrifuge testing system was developed and tests were conducted at an acceleration of 68.83 g using well-instrumented model monopiles under two different lateral load-moment combinations simulated by different loading heights: 1 and 5 times monopile diameter from the ground surface. The sand was prepared as medium loose sand. Based on the centrifuge test results, the experimental p-y curves were evaluated and compared with previous literatures including API codes. The experimental results reveal that the p-y curves were little influenced by the combination of lateral load and moment. It was also found that the embedded length affects p-y curves.
The live load effect of KL-510 of the current Korean bridge design code is examined by comparing with that of the multiple trucks of which the weights are statistically estimated from measured traffic data as well as with those of the related live load models. The truck weight data measured on the expressway before and after overweight enforcement are used to obtain the truck weights following the same procedures in deciding the live load model of the design codes and the results are compared with the load effect of KL-510. KL-510 yields a very uniform loading effect compared with the multiple truck effects when the weights are estimated from the data which contains some of the heavy trucks over the operational weight limit. KL-510 yields consistent results with the live load of AASHTO LRFD and shows less variation than the past load model DB-24 over the span lengths considered in this study. As a result of this research, the actual truck combinations equivalent to the notional KL-510 load model are constructed and it can be applied to the evaluation of the existing bridge and the calibration of the load factor of the permit vehicle.

The objective of this study was to evaluate structural safety according to environmental conditions acting on the piping of offshore structure and the motion of the structure. As for conditions acting on the piping, the maximum and minimum temperature conditions were used to analyze the design conditions of N2 generator. The motion of the structure was calculated and applied according to the DNV(Det Norske Veritas) rule. Each condition was combined and a total of 26 load combinations were constructed according to thermal load, motion load, and presence or absence of pipe support. Analysis was performed using a commercial program MSC Patran/Nastran. Thermal analysis was performed by applying the steady-state method, Sol 153. Thermal-structural coupled analysis was performed using Sol 101, a linear-static method. As a result of the analysis, the stress tended to increase when temperature inside the pipe was lower in Set 1 and Set 2, when temperature was higher in Set 3, and when the temperature difference between the inside and outside of the pipe in Set 4 was increased. However, the sum of stresses in the condition with only temperature load and the condition with only the kinetic load did not show the same value as the stress in the composite load condition of two loads. That is, the influence of the motion load varied depending on the direction of motion, the arrangement of pipes, and the position of the support. Therefore, it is necessary to comprehensively consider the size and direction of the motion load acting on the piping, the arrangement of the piping, and the location of the pipe supports during the design of piping.
