The modern orthopaedics frequently uses the total hip replacement in the artificial hip joint. The wear in this joint requires a re-replacement of hip joints because it is under the severe load and friction conditions. To solve these problems the previous studies have been mainly focussed on the development of new materials. The research of new materials, however, needs much time and effort since it should be experimented for its bio-compatibility, friction, and wear characteristics. To reduce the work, in this study, the finite element analysis is applied to find new combinations of bio-materials in the total hip replacement which has the excellent contact characteristics. A non-linear FEM program MARC with 5-node axisymmetric element was used for analyzing the contact stresses between the hip joints. The computed results show that in case of acetabulum UHMWP has good characteristics, in femoral head, $Al_2O_3$, and in stem, Ti6Al4V.
Process design of multi-step wire drawing process, conducted by means of finite element analysis and ANN(Artificial Neural Network) has been considered. The investigated problem involves the ade-quate selection of the drawing die angle and the correspondent reduction rate in the condition of desired initial and final diameter. Combinations of the process parameters which are used in finite ele-ment simulation are selected by using the orthogonal array. Also the orthogonal array. Also the orthogonal array and the results of finite element simulation which are related to the process energy are used as train data of ANN. In this study it is shown that the application of new technique using ANN and Othogonal array table to the process design of metal forming process is useful method.

The evaluation of joint fatigue strength of light weight materials for electrical vehicle body has been performed through single lap joint tests with the design parameters such as joint style, adherend, bonding overlap length and bonding thickness. Fatigue strength was evaluated through 5-Hz, tension-tension, load controlled test with the stress ratio zero value. It is experimentally observed that fatigue strength of joint increases for the increase of overlap length. The combinations of Al-Al and Al-FRP adherends show that fatigue strength of joint is hardly changed for the increase of bonding thickness, but FRP-FRP adherend specimen shows that fatigue strength of joint increases after decreases for the increase of bonding thickness. Al-Al adherend specimen has much higher fatigue length than Al-FRP and FRP-FRP adherend specimens. Riveting at adgesive bonded joint gives little effect on fatigue strength.

The failure mechanism and maximum collapse load of masonry structures may change significantly under static and dynamic excitations depending on their internal arrangement and material properties. Hence, it is important to understand correctly the nonlinear behavior of masonry structures in order to adequately assess their safety and propose efficient strengthening measures, especially for historical constructions. The discrete element method (DEM) can play an important role in these studies. This paper discusses possible collapse mechanisms and provides a set of parametric analyses by considering the influence of material properties and cross section morphologies on the out of plane strength of masonry walls. Detailed modeling of masonry structures may affect their mechanical strength and displacement capacity. In particular, the structural behavior of stacked and rubble masonry walls, portal frames, simple combinations of masonry piers and arches, and a real structure is discussed using DEM. It is further demonstrated that this structural analysis tool allows obtaining excellent results in the description of the nonlinear behavior of masonry structures.
In this paper, a strut-and-tie model approach has been proposed to directly calculate the amount of reinforcements in deep beams, and the force transfer mechanisms for this approach were investigated using linear finite element analysis. The proposed strut-and-tie model provides quite similar force transfer mechanisms to the results of linear finite element analysis for the 28 deep beams. The load-carrying capacities calculated from the proposed method are both accurate and conservative with little scatter or trends for the 214 deep beams. The deep beams have different concrete strengths including high-strength, various combinations of web reinforcements, and wide range of and a/d ratios. Good accuracy was also obtained using VecTor2, nonlinear finite element analysis tool based on the Modified Compression Field Theory. Since the proposed method provides a safe and reliable means for design of deep beams, this can serve to improve design provisions in future adjustments and development of design guidelines.
New active "intelligent" structural systems with integrated self-sensing, diagnosis, and control capabilities can lead to a new design dimension for the next generation high-performance structures and mechanical systems. However, temperature effects to the piezoelectric transducers are not fully understood. This paper is concerned with a mathematical modeling and analysis of a laminated piezothermoelastic cylindrical shell composite exposed to mechanical, electric, and thermal fields. Generic shell equations and solution procedures are derived. Contributions of spatial and time components in the mechanical, electric, and temperature excitations are discussed, and their analytical solutions derived. A laminated cylindrical shell composite with fully distributed piezoelectric layers is used in a case study; its multi-field step and impulse responses are investigated. Analyses suggest that the fully distributed actuators are insensitive to even modes due to load averaging and cancellation. Accordingly, these even modes are filtered from the total response and only the modes that are combinations of m = 1, 3, 5, ${\cdots}$ and n = 1, 3, 5, ${\cdots}$ participating in dynamic response of the shell.

Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) can greatly reinforce power systems through improvement of power transmission capacity and utilization of equipment under the circumstance of continuous load growth and deregulation SVC and STATCOM are shunt FACT devices that have similar static characteristics with Mwhuical Swikhed Capacitor (MSC). The main issue of this paper is the analysis of different dynamic characteristics when STATCOM is solely adopted and when STATCOM is adopted with combination of other reactive power compensator such as SVC and M5C. Furthermore, better application of reactive power compensators can be clarified through analysis of dynamic characteristics of various combinations of reactive power compensators.

To evaluate the structural integrity of the nuclear seismic category penetration cooling water pump under the seismic service conditions the seismic analysis was performed in accordance with IEEE-STD-344 code. The finite element computer program, ANSYS, Version 10.0, is used to perform both a mode frequency analysis and an equivalent static seismic analysis of the pump assembly. The mode frequency analysis results show the fundamental natural frequency is greater than 33 Hz and does not exist in seismic range, thus justifying the use of the static analysis. The stresses resulted from various loadings and their combinations are within the allowable limits specified in the above mentioned IEEE code. The results of the seismic evaluation fully satisfied the structural acceptance criteria of the IEEE code. Accordingly the structural integrity on the pump assembly was proved.

AI7075 alloy has been used for aircraft components since it has the advantage of high strength, high toughness, and high corrosion resistance. Many airframe components consist of various combinations of rib-web structure. In this study, various process paramenters such as die design, lubricant, ram speed, forging temperature have been investigated using the experiment and F.E.M. simulation to develop the precision forging technology for AI7075. When lubricant is applied to both material and die, shear friction factor is 0.1 which shows best effect of lubricant. It is specific corner radius of die that minimized forging load regarding process conditions, especially according to the ratio of the width of rib and web. In conclusion, optimum corner radius is 2~3mm when the width of rib and web is 3mm and 20mm respectively.
