The Relationship Between Interior Style of Residential Space and the Elderly' Cognitive Age - Focused on Bedroom and Living Room - (노인의 인지연령과 주거공간의 인테리어 스타일과의 관계 - 침실과 거실공간을 중심으로 -)

  • Many housing alternatives and design guidelines for the elderly have been suggested along with the rapid increase of old persons. However, most of them focused on the spatial composition and fixtures. They do not address on interior style which affects on interior mood. The interior style is especially important to the elderly who spend most of their time in indoor space, such as housing unit or nursing home. On the base of these backgrounds, the purpose of this study is to examine what interior style of bedroom and living room where the elderly lives are and whether they are significantly different depending on their cognitive ages, or not. The subject were 202 old persons who lived in Busan. Their ages were more than 65 years. They were interviewed by using 3D images of bedroom and living room. Each one consisted of three interior styles; Korean traditional style, Western classical style, and modern style. The results were as followings; The interior style of bedroom and living room which the old persons lived were different depending on the elderly's cognitive ages. The younger the old persons' cognitive ages were, they lived in bedroom or living room of modern style. Also, the older their cognitive ages were, they lived in bedroom or living room of Korean traditional style. These results show that the cognitive age of the old persons affect the characteristics of interior design which they live. Also, it implies that the elderly are not one homogeneous group, but a heterogeneous one.

  • Housing for the elderly should be planned on the base of elder's needs and preferences as well as their physical, emotional, and socio-psychological characteristics. This study examined the interior style of bedroom and living room the elderly preferred and these preferences are significantly different depending on their characteristics and cognitive ages, or not. This study was carried out by face to face interview with a questionnaire and 6 colored printed 3D images. The subjects were 202 old aged who lives in Busan. The interior style of bedroom and living room were classified into 3 styles; Korean traditional style, Western classical style, and modern style. The subjects made a choice their preferred interior style among three 3D images per each room and answered the reasons. Also, they answered their cognitive ages and general characteristics, and their preferences for the layout of living room-dining room-kitchen, use pattern, floor finishes, and furniture of bedroom and living room. The results were as follows; 1) The subjects preferred bed in bedroom and sofa in living room. Also, they wanted to finish the floor of bedroom and living room by using synthetic material, traditional floor paper, and wood. 2) The elderly preferred Western classical style of bedroom. The reasons were general mood such as warm, comfort, or bright, and the color. 3) These preferred styles were not any significant differences according to their characteristics and cognitive ages. 4) They preferred Korean traditional style, Western classical style, and modern style, in order. They preferred them for their general mood and window. 5) Their preferred styles were significantly different according to their housing types and cognitive ages.

A comparative study on the living style of Korea and Japan , viewed from the transition of the Japanese-style houses constructed in the collonial age (일제시대 일식주택의 변용을 통해 본 주양식의 한일 비교연구)

  • The Japanese-style houses built in the colonial age have changed through extension or remodeling since Koreans started residence after the liberation of the country. The objective of this study is to find out the influene of the cultural differences of the two nations on the living-style of the two nations from the comparative living-style viewpoint. 26 Japaneses-style houses built in the Ulsan city from the Open-Port year to 1945 were studied with the field survey method. The qualitative and the quantatative analysis were used. The results of this study are as follows. 1) Because of new materials and conveniences, kitchen, bathroom and toilet have changed into standing-type kitchen, bathroom and bathtub of cement and tile, and flush toilet respectively. The indoor toilets were removed and outdoor ones replaced them instead. 2) In the residential space the Koreans have altered the Dadami-room to the Ondol-room becaus of their own heating wywtem, installed glass or wooden doors for the seperation of rooms, enlarged the indoor space throuh removing walls, and developed new uasge of the Dokonoma space. The room of Zasici is most frequently used as the Korean-style Anbang. The wide space called 'living room' or 'maru' near the entrance hall. In conclusion, the guest-oriented Zasiki-style plan of the Japanese-style houses has remodeled into the family oriented Anbang-style plan.

  • Modern people come to have high standard and variety need for the oneself expression these days. This phenomenon also, appears in the house space clearly. There are design characteristics in an element expressing a lifestyle and personality in the house space and a living room is the space that is important at time to do a design characteristics plan. Therefore, this study is going to analyze the design characteristics of the apartment house which is a representative house type these days. Concretely, there are design characteristics that a color, an Image, a style. This study used questionary survey from June 10, 2008 to July 9. The color analyzed a color and tone through a color palette of PCIS and the living room image used SD(semantic differential method) method by a concrete analysis method. The result of the analysis were as follows; 1) Various colors and tone were prefer in a house future than the house where lived in. 2) It was done prefer to 'comfort' image for the future living room image in the future but 'provocative' image and 'splendid' were not done a choice 3) A 'modern style' was done prefer to of with a house living room style in the future.

  • In this study, it was analyzed that, the way of securing publicity and privacy in family and type of public space of the Japanese contemporary detached house, by the composition type of family from one person home to four generation family home. Mostly the living room is made as open plan of LDK type. Mostly, the entrance hall is separate with living room. Even if the case of the entrance hall is connected with living room, it is planned to be recognized as entrance hall, by making entrance poach or connecting it with stair hall. In many case, the public space is designed as traditional Japanese style, such as wellhole style space (吹拔け), courtyard, and Japanese style room (和室). The Japanese style room is adjacent to living room, and used as the space of receiving guests. The wellhole style space and courtyard are recognized as the center of the house, and used as buffer space for ensuring privacy of each generation. The most different point between bachelor house and multi generation family house is another LDK space, living room or kitchen for parents' generation is made separately. Particularly there are many case of making separate small kitchen space, therefore it can be known that, the separation of kitchen space is recognized more importantly than that of living room. And there are many case of making separate entrance hall, two houses under one roof. The spatial composition like this can said as rational method of ensuring the privacy of each generation, and using the public space together as necessary.

  • Korea is quickly transforming into an aging society. As a reaction to the accelerated aging society in recent years, there is a growing need to introduce sustainable housing policies and strategies for aging society. The main purpose of this study is to explore where people want to live after retirement. Especially, this study focuses on the residential environment such as housing types, residential location, and living environment. The main findings are as follows. First, people preferred living in a sububan-style housing in the suburban or rural areas to living in a city-style housing in the urban areas. Second, people have a strong preference for the importance of convenience in using natural environment, medical service, and cultural facilities. Third, the family life style has been changed from children-oriented life style to couple-oriented life style by showing that people like to stay with a spouse rather than with their children after retirement.

A Study on Life Style of Rural Homemakers (농촌주부의 가정생활양식에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to offer basic data of education to improve farm lives though investigating rural homemakers' life style. The results of this study are as follows : 1. The life structure of rural homemakers was classified into two structures as a material resources and human resources. The life style of rural homemakers was classified into systematical life style, traditional value style, social active style, and progressive active style. 2. The life styles of rural homemakers according to social population variance were as follows. The lower of age, homemakers whose family incomes more 30 million won or below 10 million won, who has religions, who employed in livestock were showed at very systematical life style. The homemakers who live in mountain village, higher the much age becomes, and the education level become lower, have showed traditional value style. Rural homemakers the lower of age, the higher incomes, composed of single parent + children who remain single were appeared social active style. Rural homemakers the lower of age, the more shortened farm life periods, who employed in livestock were appeared progressive active style. 3. Systematical life style was more affected by material resources structure, traditional value style was affected by material resources. And social active style was more affected by human resources, progressive active style was affected by human resources.

  • The study has effected checking the traditional Korean-style house condition in Farm village and the resident preference test in jeonnam area for examination propriety of development a traditional Korean-style house. Also, it was checked over the problem and improvement direction of new building the Korean style house. The resident wanted living in the traditional Korean-style house if it is compromised problem of living equipment and cost of building. First. Jeonnam area Korean style house must keep the 'ㅡ' type plan. Second, the plan must construct compact and effective plan with the main floored room as the center for prevention against an indiscreet plan space extend of outside. Third, it has must need suitable material and construction for applying traditional exterior with effect. Fourth, it has must need actualization plan for the cost of construction is 3,500,000/py for construction.

A study on the Process of Spatial Transfiguration for the Japanese-Western Eclectic Houses in Taegu province (대구지역 일.양절충식 주거의 공간 변화과정에 관한 연구)

  • This study is to analyze the transfiguration of the plan of the Japanese-Western eclectic houses in the process of the change in the living style and modernization. Twenty four Japanese-Western eclectic houses. which were located in Teagu Province and constructed during the period from the end of 19th century to the year 1945. were surveyed and analized about the original plans and the process of their spatial tranfituration. The results of this study are as follews 1) In the original plans. the bathroom, toilet and entrance hall in the residential space and HUSMA(wooden sliding doors) for separation of the rooms had been installed. 2) After the Liberation. the rooms of the residential space had been transfigured from TADAMI. JASHIKI. kitchen and toilet etc. to ONDOL. ANBANG. kitchen and toilet etc of the Korean traditional style. From 1980's they composed of living room, dining room and entrance hall of the Western-style. 3) From the liberation to 1960's. each room of residential space had been transtigured greatly form the Japanese style into the Korean style. Thus as the entrance hall. bathroom and TADAMI has been disappeared. DNDOL and MARU reappeared. Since 1980's bathroom diningroom and entrance hall ef the Western-style have recomposed in their residential space. But ANBANG is still used as a major living space in the surveyed houses.

  • The main object of this research was to study the better housing business by the Architectural Association of Chosun. The Architectural Association of Chosun was founded in 1992 and it influenced great deal on the development of Korean architecture. The Architectural Association of Chosun took the first step in business by holding the Better Housing Plan Competition which was the first housing plan competition in Korea, Also, it meant the enlightenment of better cultural housing. Overall, it can be summarized as follows; 1) It could be considered that the Architectural Association of Chosun was connected with the Japanese Colonial Policy of that time. 2) The Better Housing Plan Competition indicated the way of improving better living condition. 3) Most of the prize-wining works emphasized economical and practical way of housing. 4) The wanted to get out of the old conventional way of hosing. 5) All the plans showed \" the living\" and it meant that \" the living: is the centre of family life which connected the modern housing plan. 6) Western way of life was combined with the conventional style, in other words, modernization of life was derived from the western style. 7) Better housing plan which is more suitable for the Korean weather and environment was not considered. 8) Colonial domination of Japanese style could also be found in housing. Most of the plans used Japanese style as the basic housing style. housing style.
