  • Objective: The aim of this study was to report the improvement of stroke symptoms in patients using Mokdanpisaback-san. Methods: This study was carried out on patients hospitalized at the Department of Korean Internal Medicine of Jecheon Korean Medicine Hospital of Semyung University from October 2014 to September 2019. A retrospective study was performed on 43 patients who were diagnosed with stroke and Soyangin and treated with Mokdanpisaback-san. Results & Conclusion: 1. Mokdanpisaback-san is effective in improving various symptoms of stroke, including dysarthria, dysphagia, movement disorder, paresthesia, quadriplegia, and dizziness. 2. Mokdanpisaback-san significantly improves the motor disorders of stroke, including lower extremity muscle strength, standing, and walking disorders. 3. Mokdanpisaback-san does not affect the liver or kidney function.

  • Dubin-Johnson syndrome is a form of benign, familial idiopathic jaundice presenting with chronic intermittent conjugated hyperbilirubinemia and a melanin-like pigment has been found in the parenchymal liver cells. This disorder is rarely diagnosed in the neonatal period. We report a case of Dubin-Johnson syndrome presenting with neonatal cholestasis.

  • The following case illustrates the efficacy of Yanghyulgupung-tang and accupuncture therapy in the treatment of Dupung caused by cerebral infarction. The chief symptoms of the Dupung are dysesthesia in face, dizziness, and a disorder in the sense of smell (such as oversensibility or insensibility to the smell of food). Yanghyulgupung-tang is the medicine which treats women's Dupung with the deficiency syndrome of Liver. After medication to patient, the symptoms of Dupung decreases rapidily within the first week. This result supports the clinical efficacy of Yanghyulgupung-tang for the treatment of Dupung caused by cerebral infarction.

  • Gaucher disease is a multisystemic disorder arising from a deficient activity of the lysosomal enzyme glucocerebrosidase, which leads to accumulation of glycosylceraide and other glycolipids in the regiculoendothelial system. The characteristics of Gaucher disease are anemia, thrombocytopenia, hepatosplenomegaly, and skeletal disease. Enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) has been proven to prevent progressive manifestations of Gaucher disease and effective in improving anemia, thrombocytopenia, bone markers and biomarkers. However, some patient needs still remain unmet because of the inaccessibility of certain sites including brain, bone and various organs. ERT could not Improve the irreversible lesion such as liver fibrosis, hepatopulmonary syndrome, and necrosis or infarction of bone and other organs. Adult patients with Gaucher disease should be screened for longterm complication such as bone disease, pulmonary hypertension, gallstone, and cancer, especially in patients with splenectomy. Parkinsonism and polyneuropathy was also reported among patients with type 1 Gaucher disease, but ERT does not improve neurological function. We need to review the benefits and unmet needs of ERT in Gaucher disease.

  • Propionic acidemia is an inherited organic acid metabolic disorder. During chronic recurrent metabolic crisis, multiple blood transfusions can cause secondary hemochromatosis. We report a patient with propionic acidemia who had iron overload that resulted in liver dysfunction, cardiomyopathy and diabetes. When multiple blood transfusions are unavoidable, use of chelating agents for iron can prevent complications such as diabetes and hemochromatosis.

  • In growing number of diseases it has been shown that the aggregation of specific proteins has an important role in the pathogenesis of the disorder. This has been demonstrated in structural detail with the liver cirrhosis of ${\alpha}$$_1$-antitrypsin deficiency, and it is now believed that similar protein aggregation underlies many neurodegenerative disorders such as autosomal dominant Parkinson disease, prion diseases, Alzheimer disease, Huntington disease.

  • Cyperus rotundus L. (Cyperaceae) has been used as an analgesic and antiiflammatory agent and in the treatment of menstrual disorder in folk remedies. Cyperi Rhizomata, processed and unprocessed, were extracted with methanol and fractionated with petroleum ether, chloroform. Butanol, water. The effect of unprocessed Cyperi Rhizoma and processed Cyperi Rhizoma on $CCl_4$ induced lipid peroxidation and hepatotoxity have been tested in rats. BuOH. Water fractions of unprocessed Cyperi Rhizome enhanced the inhibition of antilipid peroxidative effects in liver lipid. In chemical parameters obtained from serum analysis. Butanol fraction of unprocessed Cyperi Rhizoma showed significant decrease in hepatotoxicity. In result, unprocessed Cyperi rhizoma has significant antilipid peroxidative effect and hepatoprotective activity.

  • Bile acids are major constituents of bile and known to help absorb dietary fat and fat-soluble vitamins in the gastrointestinal tract. In the past few decades, many studies have shown that bile acids not only play a role in fat digestion but also function as broad range of signal transduction hormones by binding to various receptors present in cell membranes or nuclei. Bile acid receptors are distributed in a wide range of organs and tissues in the human body. They perform multitudes of physiological functions with complex mechanisms. When bile acids bind to their receptors, they regulate fat and glucose metabolism in a tissue-specific way. In addition, bile acids are shown to inhibit inflammation and fibrosis in the liver. Considering the roles of bile acids as metabolic regulators, bile acids and their receptors can be very attractive targets in treating metabolic disorders. In the future, if roles of bile acids and their receptors are further clarified, they will be the novel target of drugs in the treatment of various metabolic diseases.
