배터리 시스템 안전을 위한 이온화 연료의 연소 특성 (Combustion Characteristics of Ionized Fuels for Battery System Safety)

  • Many electronic devices are powered by various rechargeable batteries such as lithium-ion recently, and occasionally the batteries undergo thermal runaway and cause fire, explosion, and other hazards. If a battery fire should occur in an electronic device of vehicle and aircraft cabin, it is important to quickly extinguish the fire and cool the batteries to minimize safety risks. Attempts to minimize these risks have been carried out by many researchers but the results have been still unsatisfied. Because most rechargeable batteries are operated on the ion state during charge and discharge of electricity and the combustion of ion state has big difference with normal combustion. Here we focused on the effect of ions including an electron during combustion process. The effects of an ionized fuel on the flame stability and the combustion products were experimentally investigated in the propane jet diffusion flames. The burner used in this experiment consisted of 7.5 mm diameter tube for fuel and the propane was ionized with th ionizer (SUNJE, SPN-11). The results show that toe overall flame stability and shape such as flame length has no significant difference even in the higher ion concentration. However the fuel ionization affects to the pollutant emissions such as NOx and soot. NOx and CO emissions measured in post flame region decreased by fuel ionization, especially high fuel velocity, i.e. high ion density. TGA analysis and morphology of soot by TEM indicates that the fuel ionization makes soot to be matured.

Partially Carbonized Poly (Acrylic Acid) Grafted to Carboxymethyl Cellulose as an Advanced Binder for Si Anode in Li-ion Batteries

  • To improve the performance of Si anodes in advanced Li-ion batteries, the design of the electrode plays a critical role, especially due to the large volumetric expansion in the Si anode during Li insertion. In our study, we used a simple fabrication method to prepare Si-based electrodes by grafting polyacrylic acid (PAA) to a carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) binder (CMC-g-PAA). The procedure consists of first mixing nano-sized Si and the binders (CMC and PAA), and then coating the slurry on a Cu foil. The carbon network was formed via carbonization of the binders i.e., by a simple heat treatment of the electrode. The carbon network in the electrode is mechanically and electrically robust, which leads to higher electrical conductivity and better mechanical property. This explains its long cycle performance without the addition of a conducting agent (for example, carbon). Therefore, the partially carbonized CMC-g-PAA binder presented in this study represents a new feasible approach to produce Si anodes for use in advanced Li-ion batteries.

  • 리튬이온이차전지의 부극재로 사용되는 탄소재인 비정질 탄소(needle cokes)에 $B_2O_3$를 첨가하여 공기중의 질소 분위기와 Ar 분위기에서 고온으로 흑연화 열처리를 하였을 때의 표면미세구조의 변화와 제 2상의 분포를 투과전자현미경으로 분석하였다. 또한 전지용량, 전지효율과 같은 전지성능이 탄소재의 표면미세구조와 관련되어 있음을 고찰하였다.

Comparative Study on Performances of Composite Anodes of SiO, Si and Graphite for Lithium Rechargeable Batteries

  • The electrochemical performances of anode composites comprising elemental silicon (Si), silicon monoxide (SiO), and graphite (C) were investigated. The composite devoid of elemental silicon (SiO:C = 1:1) and its carbon coated composite showed reduced capacity degradation with measured values of 606 and 584 mAh/g at the fiftieth cycle. The capacity retention nature when the composites were cycled followed the order of Si:SiO:C = 3:1:4 < Si:SiO:C = 2:2:4 < SiO:C = 1:1 < SiO:C = 1:1 (carbon coated). A comparison of the capacity retention properties for the composites in terms of the silicon content showed that a reduced silicon content increased the stability of the composite electrodes. Even though the carbon-coated composite delivered low capacity during cycling compared to the other composites, its low capacity degradation made the anode a better choice for lithium ion batteries.

  • 향후 우리 사회의 혁신적 변화를 가져올 휴대용 전자기기, 전기자동차 및 스마트 그리드 에너지 저장장치 등의 비약적인 발전에 따라, 그 전원으로서 리튬이차전지에 대한 관심이 더욱 증대하고 있다. 본 총설에서는, 리튬이차전지 핵심 소재 중 하나인 분리막에 대해 기공 구조 및 물리화학적 물성 관점에서 고찰하고, 이와 함께 최신 연구 동향을 소개하고자 한다. 리튬이차전지 분리막은 양극과 음극 사이에 위치하는 다공성 막으로서, 두 전극 간의 전기적 단락을 방지하고, 이온의 흐름을 가능하게 하는 기능을 갖는다. 분리막 자체는 전지 내 전기화학 반응에는 직접적으로 참여하지 않으나, 앞서 언급한 기능들에 의해 전지 성능 및 안전성에 큰 영향을 끼친다. 최근 들어, 이러한 분리막의 기본 특성 이외에, 전지 안전성 강화 및 금속 이온 흡착 등을 비롯한 다양한 기능 부여를 위한 노력들이 활발히 진행되고 있다. 본 총설에서는 현재 상업화된 폴리올레핀 분리막에 대한 이해를 토대로, 개질 폴리올레핀 분리막, 부직포 분리막, 세라믹 복합 분리막 및 화학 활성 분리막 등으로 대표되는 최신 분리막 기술들을, 차세대 전지 개발 방향과 관련 지어 기술하고자 한다.

Electrochemical Corrosion Behavior of Iron in Lithium-ion Battery Electrolyte

  • The element iron (Fe) is affordable and abundantly available, and thus, it finds use in a wide range of applications. As regards its application in rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the electrochemical reactions of Fe must be clearly understood during battery charging and discharging with the LIB electrolyte. In this study, we conducted systematic electrochemical analyses under various voltage conditions to determine the voltage at which Fe corrosion begins in general lithium salts and organic solvents used in LIBs. During cyclic voltammetry (CV) experiments, we observed a large corrosion current above 4.0 V (vs. Li/Li+). When a constant voltage of 3.7 V (vs. Li/Li+), was applied, the current did not increase significantly at the beginning, similar to the CV scenario; on the other hand, at a voltage of 3.8 V (vs. Li/Li+), the current increased rapidly. The impact of this difference was visually confirmed via scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy. Our X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements showed that at 3.7 V, a thick organic solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) was formed atop a thin fluoride SEI, which means that at ≥3.8 V, the SEI cannot prevent Fe corrosion. This result confirms that Fe corrosion begins at 3.7 V, beyond which Fe is easily corrodible.

Cross-linkable Polymer Matrix for Enhanced Thermal Stability of Succinonitrile-based Polymer Electrolyte in Lithium Rechargeable Batteries

  • A polymer electrolyte was prepared by using polyvinylidenefluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene (PVdF-HFP) or poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) as polymer matrices, succinonitrile as an additive, and lithium perchlorate as a lithium salt. Compared to the polymer electrolyte employing PVdF-HFP, the PEGDMA-based polymer electrolyte exhibits substantially superior thermal stability when exposed to high temperatures. Nonetheless, the ionic conductivity of the PEGDMA-based polymer electrolyte was preserved in a wide temperature range between $-20^{\circ}C$ and $80^{\circ}C$.

나트륨이차전지용 전환반응 음극 소재 기술 동향 (Research Trend on Conversion Reaction Anodes for Sodium-ion Batteries)

  • 이차 전지의 개발이 전기자동차나 스마트그리드와 같은 중대형의 에너지저장장치로 응용범위가 확대됨에 따라 이차 전지의 경제성확보가 화두가 되고 있다. 나트륨이차전지는 리튬보다 훨씬 저렴한 나트륨원료를 사용하여 저가의 차세대 이차 전지로 크게 주목받고 있다. 이에 따라 이온 반경이 큰 나트륨이온의 삽입과 탈리를 원활하게 해줄 수 있는 음극 소재의 개발이 최근 몇 년간 활발히 수행되어 왔다. 나트륨이차전지용 음극은 세 가지의 반응 메커니즘 (층간 삽입반응, 금속-합금반응, 전환반응)을 기반한 소재들이 보고되었으며, 본 총설에서는 전환반응으로 구동하는 다양한 음극 소재들을 소개하며 나트륨 전지 셀 내 반응 메커니즘을 소개하고자 한다.

Cobalt Oxide Nanorods Prepared by a Template-Free Method for Lithium Battery Application

  • Transition metal oxide-based electrodes for lithium ion batteries have recently attracted much attention because of their high theoretical capacity. Here we report the electrochemical behavior of cobalt oxide nanorods as anodes, prepared by a template-free, one-step electrochemical deposition of cobalt nanorods, followed by an oxidation process. The as-deposited cobalt has a slightly convex columnar structure, and controlled thermal oxidation produces cobalt oxides of different Co/O ratios, while the original shape is largely preserved. As an anode in a rechargeable lithium battery, the Co/O ratio has a strong effect on initial capacity and cycling stability. In particular, the one-dimensional Co@CoxOy core shell structure obtained from a mild heat-treatment results in superior cycling stability.

3D-foam 구조의 구리-주석 합금 도금층을 음극재로 사용한 리튬이온배터리의 전기화학적 특성 평가 (Electrochemical Properties of 3D Cu-Sn Foam as Anode for Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery)

  • Sn-based lithium-ion batteries have low cost and high theoretical specific capacity. However, one of major problem is the capacity fading caused by volume expansion during lithiation/delithiation. In this study, 3-dimensional foam structure of Cu-Sn alloy is prepared by co-electrodeposition including large free space to accommodate the volume expansion of Sn. The Cu-Sn foam structure exhibits highly porous and numerous small grains. The result of EDX mapping and XPS spectrum analysis confirm that Cu-Sn foam consists of $SnO_2$ with a small quantity of CuO. The Cu-Sn foam structure electrode shows high reversible redox peaks in cyclic voltammograms. The galvanostatic cell cycling performances show that Cu-Sn foam electrode has high specific capacity of 687 mAh/g at a current rate of 50 mA/g. Through SEM observation after the charge/discharge processes, the morphology of Cu-Sn foam structure is mostly maintained despite large volume expansion during the repeated lithiation/delithiation reactions.
