A Cell-to-Cell Fast Balancing Circuit for Lithium-Ion Battery Module (리튬이온 배터리 모듈을 위한 단일셀간 고속 밸런싱 회로)

  • In this paper a cell-to-cell fast charge balancing circuit for the Lithium-Ion battery module is proposed. In the proposed topology the energy in a high voltage cell is transferred directly to a low voltage cell through the operation of the dc-dc converter. Furthermore, the charge balancing can be performed regardless of the battery operation whether it is being charged, discharged or relaxed. The monitoring circuit composed of a DSP and a battery monitoring IC is designed to monitor the cell voltage and detect the inferior cell thereby protecting the battery module from failure. In order to demonstrate the performance of the proposed topology, a prototype circuit was designed and applied to 12 Lithium-Ion battery module. It has been verified with the experiments that the charge equalization time of the proposed method was shorter compared with those of other methods.

Charge/Discharge Characteristics of Lithium ion Secondary Battery Using Ag-deposited Graphite as Anode Active Material (은 담지한 흑연을 부극 활물질로 이용한 Lithium ion 2차전지의 충방전 특성)

  • Ag-deposited graphite powder was prepared by a chemical reduction method of metal particles onto graphite powder. X-ray diffraction observation of Ag-deposited graphite powder revealed that silver existed in a metallic state, but not in an oxidized one. From SEM measurement, ultrafine silver particles were highly dispersed on the surface of graphite particles. Cylindrical lithium ion secondary battery was manufactured using Ag-deposited graphite anodes and $LiCoO_2$ cathodes. The cycleability of lithium ion secondary battery using Ag-deposited graphite anodes was superior to that of original graphite powder. The improved cycleability may be due to both the reduction of electric resistance between electrodes and the highly durable Ag-graphite anode.

  • The purpose of this study is to research and develop tin oxide-flash composite for lithium Ion polymer battery. Tin oxide is one of the promising material as a electrode active material for lithium Ion polymer battery (LIPB). Tin-based oxides have theoretical volumetric and gravimetric capacities that are four and two times that of carbon, respectively. We investigated cyclic voltammetry and charge/discharge cycling of SnO-flyash/SPE/Li cells. The first discharge capacity of SnO-flyash composite anode was 720 mAh/g. The discharge capacity of SnO-flyash composite anode 412 and 314 mAh/g at cycle 2 and 10 at room temperature, respectively. The SnO-flyash composite anode with PVDF-PMMA-PC-EC-$LiClO_4$ electrolyte showed good capacity with cycling.

  • Lithium ion batteries have been widely adopted as energy storage and the LIB global market has grown fastest. However, LIB players have struggled against maximizing energy density since commercial monolithic electrodes are limited by electrolyte depletion caused by long and tortuous Li-ion diffusion pathways. Recently, new strategies designing the structure of battery electrodes strive for creating fast Li-ion path and alleviating electrolyte depletion problem in monolithic electrodes. In this paper, given the fundamental and experimental approaches, we compare the monolithic to structured electrodes and demonstrate the ways to fabricate high energy, fast chargeable Lithium ion battery.

  • This study analyzed ignition probability about Lithium-polymer batteries of what variously were being produced wearable devices recently. The study analyzed ignition probability by PCM(Protection Circuit Module) operating state and overcharged, over-discharged, exposed to high temperatures of Lithium polymer batteries, analyzing wearable devices on the market. Then it classified experimental results to implement analysis comparison about weight, X-ray imaging, battery decomposition. With these experiments, the study analyzed combustion-possibility and fire patterns. These statistics will be used to measure and verify the cause of a fire when identify wearable devices using Lithium-polymer batteries.

Black Phosphorus Nano Flake Lithium Ion Battery Using Electrophoretic Deposition (전기영동 증착법을 이용한 Black Phosphorus Nano Flake 리튬이온 배터리)

  • Black phosphorus (BP) is a potential candidate for an anode in lithium ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity and the large interlayer spacing in the monolayered phosphorene form, allowing for lithium intercalation/deintercalation. In this study, large-scale exfoliation of bulk BP was accomplished using a solution of NaOH and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), yielding phosphorene, which can be assembled into nanoflakes using electrophoretic deposition (EPD). Through the systematic addition of NaOH and subsequent sonication, BP nanoflakes were obtained in high yields by EPD, allowing for the integration of these nanoflakes into an anode in the film state. Anodes with a charge/discharge capacity of 172 mAh/g at a rate of 200 mA/g were obtained, which are promising for battery applications through various post-film treatments.

  • This paper uses seasonal auto-regressive integrated moving average (S-ARIMA), which is efficient in seasonality between time-series models, to predict the degradation tendency for lithium-ion batteries and study a method for improving the predictive performance. The proposed method analyzes the degradation tendency and extracted factors through an electrical characteristic experiment of lithium-ion batteries, and verifies whether time-series data are suitable for the S-ARIMA model through several statistical analysis techniques. Finally, prediction of battery aging is performed through S-ARIMA, and performance of the model is verified through error comparison of predictions through mean absolute error.

Optimization of Lithium in Li1+x[Mn0.720Ni0.175Co0.105]O2 as a Cathode Material for Lithium Ion Battery

  • Different amounts of excess lithium in the range of x = 0~0.3 were added to $Li_{1+x}[Mn_{0.720}Ni_{0.175}Co_{0.105}]O_2$ cathode materials synthesized using the co-precipitation method to investigate its microstructure and electrochemical properties. Pure layered structure without impurities was confirmed in the XRD pattern analysis and increasing peak intensity of $Li_2MnO_3$ was observed along with the addition of over 0.2 mol Li. The initial discharge capacity of the stoichiometric composition was determined to be 246 mAh/g, while the discharge capacity of the addition of 0.1 mol Li was obtained to be 241 mAh/g, which was not significantly different from that of the stoichiometric composition. However, the discharge capacities decreased dramatically after the addition of 0.2 and 0.3 mol Li to 162 mAh/g and 146 mAh/g, respectively. In the rate capability test, the active $Li_{1+x}[Mn_{0.720}Ni_{0.175}Co_{0.105}]O_2$ cathode material of the stoichiometric composition showed a dramatic decrease in its discharge capacity with increasing C-rate, as evidenced by the result that the discharge capacity at 5C was 13% compared with 0.1C. On the other hand, the discharge capacity of compositions containing excess lithium was improved at higher current rates. The cycling test showed that the composition containing an excess of 0.1 mol Li had the most outstanding capacity retention.

  • Lithium-ion batteries providing high gravimetric energy density are rapidly replacing Ni-Cd and Ni-H2 in aerospace applications. The main advantage is the weight reduction of the battery system. Weight is a major concern in aerospace applications. Also, lithium-ion offer low thermal dissipation, high energy efficiency, and low cell cost. The Onboard battery module for KSLV-I(Korea Space Launch Vehicle) contains 80 Sony US18650 cells configured as 10 strings in parallel, with each string containing 8 series connected cells. This allows to meet voltage and capacity requirements specified for the mission. In this paper design description and specifications of lithium-ion battery developed are presented. Qualification test flow is also shown to make sure the performance in the predicted space environment. Electrical performance was simulated by dedicated program, and verified with electronic load. Lastly, the capacity was proven on real equipment load assembly.

Electrochemical Characteristics of $LiMn_{2}O_{4}$/Lithium Cells in Organic Electrolyte (유기전해액 $LiMn_{2}O_{4}$/Lithium 전지의 전기화학적 특성)

  • The electrochemical properties of LiM $n_2$ $O_4$as a cathode and an anode for the lithium secondary battery were evaluated. When LiM $n_2$ $O_4$ material was used as the cathode with the current collector of aluminum, the 1st specific capacity and the 1st Ah efficiency in LiM $n_2$ $O_4$/lithium cell were 123 mAh/g and 91.7%, respectively The anodic properties of LiM $n_2$ $O_4$ material was also evaluated in the LiM $n_2$ $O_4$/1ithium cell with the current collector of copper. It showed that the LiM $n_2$ $O_4$ was useful as the anode for the lithium secondary battery. During the 1st discharge, a potential plateau was observed at the potential of 0.3 $V_{Li}$ Li+/. The 1st specific charge capacity and the 1st specific discharge capacity were 790 mAh/s and 362 mAh/g, respectively. Therefore, the 1st Ah efficiency was 46%. The discharge capacity was gradually faded with the charge-discharge cycling to about 50th cycles. Thereafter, the discharge capacity was stabilized to about 110 mAh/g.
