A reduced condition for liquid-gas phase transition from the singularity of compressibility is derived using diagrammatic approach and is examined in the hard sphere system. The condition turns out that the Percus-Yevick and the Hyper-Netted-Chain approximation never conceive the idea of phase transition, and explains that the liquid-gas transition does not exist in hard sphere system. The solid-fluid transition is considered on the viewpoint of correlation function and diagrammatic analysis.
We have re-examined the linear solvation energy relationships in reversed phase liquid chromatography by considering various solutes including quite a number of compounds of strong hydrogen bond capability. We observed that solutes of strong hydrogen bond ability should be excluded in order to obtain resonable correlations between In k' and solute polarity parameters and that inclusion of one or two such solutes causes severe distortions of correlation results. This anomaly may be due to existence of residual silanol groups in the stationary phase, that is, their specific interactions with solutes.
Side-chain liquid crystalline polymers having polysiloxane skeletons were synthesized by a thiol-ene reaction, using two kinds of mesogenic groups: a cholesteryl group for induction into a cholesteric liquid crystal phase and a triazomesogenic group for imparting light-sensitivity. All the synthesized polymers were crystalline, except the one with a single cholesteryl group. Crystallinity, glass transition temperature, and melt transition temperature increased with increasing content of the azomesogenic group. The polymer (P-C10A0) with a single cholesteryl group has a cholesteric phase, the one (P-C0A10) with a single azomesogenic group has a smectic phase, and those with both types of mesogenic groups showed both smectic and cholesteric phases. The temperature ranges of the two liquid crystalline phases in the co-polymers were independent of the contents of the two types of mesogenic groups. The rate of photoisomerization of the light-sensitive azobenzene group in the polymer decreased with increasing azobenzene content due to steric hindrance between the azomesogenic groups.
A numerical study on the melting process inside an isothermal spherical capsule is made. It is assumed that the phase change medium of its solid phase is heavier than the liquid phase and therefore the unmelted solid core is continuously moving downward on account of gravity forces. Such a gravity-assisted melting is commonly characterized by the existence of a thin liquid film below the solid core. The present study is motivated to present a full-equation-based analysis of the influences of the initial subcooling and the natural convection on the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics associated with the gravity-assisted melting. In the light of the solution strategy, the present study is substantially distinguished from the existing works in that the complete set of governing equations in both the melted and unmelted regions are resolved without subdivision of the solution domains. For example, the liquid film region and the upper melted region are treated here as one domain and thus obviating laborious efforts to couple them. Numerical results are obtained by varying the Rayleigh numbers and the degree of subcooling. For the range of parameters examined, the presence of subcooling was found to impede the melting rate. The dropping velocity of the unmelted solid core was observed to affect the natural convection in the liquid significantly. When compared with the available experimental data, much improved prediction was achieved.
A number of thermotropic liquid crystalline polyurethanes with mesogenic unit were synthesized by polyaddition of a para-type diisocyanate such as 1, 4-phenylene diisocyanate(1,4-PDI) with 4, 4'-bis($\omega$-hydorxyalkoxy) biphenyls($BP{m}$) in DMF. The thermal and liquid crystab line properties were examined by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), polarized optical microscopy, and wide-angle X-ray scattering(WAXS). Intrinsic viscosities of the polymers exbibited two endothermic peaks correspondinding to phase transitions of melting and isotropization. For example, polyurethane(1,4-PDI/($BP{11}$) ) was found to display a liquid crystalline phase between 177 to 205$^{\circ}C$. In order to know how the hydrogen bonding interaction affects the formation of mesophases in polyurethane 1, 4-PDI/($BP{8}$) / thermal processing FT-IR measurements were carried out. It was found that the stretches regarded as shift to higher frequency region with increasing temperature which showed grdually their liquid crystalline phase

The spray and acoustic characteristics of a gas/liquid swirl coaxial injector are studied experimentally. The self-pulsation is defined as a pressure and flow rate oscillations by a time-delayed feedback between liquid and gas phase. Self-pulsation has strong influences on atomization and mixing processes and accompanies painful screams. So. the spray and acoustic characteristics are investigated. Spray patterns are observed by shadow photography technique in order to determine the onset of self-pulsation. And self-pulsation boundary with Injection conditions and recess length is get. To measure the frequency of the spray oscillation. oscillation of the laser intensity which passes through spray is analyzed by Fast Fourier Transform. For acoustic tests, a PULSE System was used. Acoustic characteristics of a swirl coaxial injector are investigated according to the injection conditions. such as the pressure drop or the liquid and gas phase. and injector geometries. such as recess length and gap size between the inner and outer injector. Front the experimental results. the increase of recess length leads to the rapid increase of the sound pressure level. And as the pressure drop of the liquid phase increases. the frequency of the self?pulsation shifts to the higher frequency. The frequency of spray oscillations is the same as that of the acoustic fields by self-pulsation.
This study is simulation of high elevated liquid line of a modular heat pump system to observe longitudinal subcooling variation. In a high elevated tube, subcooled refrigerant(R410A) through a condenser changes its states by heat transfer with surrounding air and by pressure drop from elevation. In this study, the liquid line was simulated through correlations of heat transfer and pressure drop for the variation from single-phase into two-phase flow. Pressure drop, heat transfer rate and vapor quality were calculated as key parameters. Two-phase turning heights and variations of the key parameters were confirmed from the simulation. As a result, high elevation of liquid line has great influence on upward flow, which requires additional equipment to compensate the variation.
The separation and concentration of L-phenylalanine (L-Phe) using a supported liquid membrane (SLM) is investigated. A cation complex agent, di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (D2EHPA), is used as a carrier in the SLM with n-Heptane as a solvent. The reaction order and equilibrium constant in the formation reaction of L-phe-carrier complex are obtained from the extraction experiment. A mathematical model for a carrier mediated counter transport process is proposed to estimate the diffusion coefficient of L-phe-carrier complexly in the liquid membrant. Permeation experiments of L-phe using a SLM are performed under various operating conditions and optimum conditions for the transport of L-phe are obtained. Concentration of L-phe in the strip phase against its concentration is observed. Transport rate of glucose through liquid membrane is less than that of L-phe in the competitive transport of L-phe and glucose. And the existence of glucose reduced the transport rate of L-phe. The performance of separation with continuous strip phase is increased due to the dilution effect in the strip phase.
Main-chain/side-chain liquid crystalline polymers (MCSCLCPs) combined with an azobenzene group and a cholesteryl group were synthesized to impart light and temperature sensitivity to the polymer. The polymers were designed with the azobenzene unit as the mesogenic group of the main-chain and various compositions of the azobenzene and cholesteryl units as the mesogenic group of the side-chain. The chemical structures and physical properties of the synthesized polymers were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, polarized optical microscopy, and ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy. All the MCSCLCPs were amorphous and exhibited enantiotropic liquid crystal phases; these polymers achieved the nematic phase with increasing content of the azobenzene group and exhibited the cholesteric phase with weak liquid crystallinity as the content of the cholesteryl group was increased. Furthermore, the polymers containing the azobenzene group showed photoisomerization when exposed to UV-Vis light, and the CP-A3C7 and CP-A5C5 polymers exhibited thermochromism in the temperature range of the liquid crystal phase.
