  • We have studied electrode-optic characteristics of IPS (in-plane switching) mode with electrode on top substrate. Because the IPS mode does not have electrode on top substrate. it shows not only slow response time due to weak electric field but also slow discharging problem when electrostatic field is generated after fabricating the cell. To solve these problems. we have formed additional electrode including dielectric layer in the inner part of the cell and studied electrode-optic characteristics of new IPS cell by changing thickness of dielectric layer.

  • The Cold cathode fluorescent lamp(CCFL) are widely used to illuminate the liquid crystal display(LCD). Ballasts are required for CCFL because the lamp need high starting voltage and behave negative dynamic resistant characteristics in the desired region of operation. Dimming methods of CCFL are used to pulse frequency modulation(PFM) or pulse width modulation(PWM). In this paper, CCFL driving and control circuit is designed by half-bridge type series and parallel resonant inverter that variable frequency modulation method to control the output voltage current. The validity of this study is confirmed from the simulation and experimental results.

  • The psychophysical experiments were carried out by a panel of eleven observers on the image difference pairs displayed on the LCD (liquid crystal display)to quantify the quality changes of complex images imparted by the typical image processing operations. There were six different kinds of pairs according to their original image. The three types of visual tests performed were: pair-to-pair comparison of image differences for ordering the differences between images introduced by single or combination of image lightness change, contrast change, blurring, and sharpening, perceptibility and acceptability tests using ascending or descending series of image difference pairs ordered according to the size of their visual differences. • Purpose: This study aims to enhance the resistance against sulfate attack compared to ordinary Portland cement (OPC) concrete by using liquid crystal display (LCD) as binder. Method: The fundamental properties including compressive strength and porosity of concrete replaced by LCD up to 15% at increments of 5% and in turn, the weight, volume, and strength loss of LCD-mixed concrete was analyzed. Results: For the concrete substituted by 5% of LCD, it showed the highest compressive strength at 28 days of curing, and particular at immersion of $Na_2SO_4$ solution, it was achieved the lowest loss of weight, volume and strength due to an decreased porosity at capillaries. In contrast, there is no distinct difference of the sulfate attack resistance between LCD-mixed concretes under exposure of $MgSO_4$ solution, excepted for OPC concrete. Conclusion: In this study, comparison of resistance to sulfate attack between LCD-mixed concretes, and it would be proposed the possibility of LCD usage as binder through long-term verification with extended replacement ratio and identification of changes of hydrates in the cement matrix.

  • Although Active matrix organic light emitting diode (AMOLED) display has a better image quality in terms of viewing angle, contrast ratio, and response time than liquid crystal displays (LCDs), it still has some critical issues such as lifetime, residual images, and brightness non-uniformity due to non-uniformity in electrical characteristics of driving TFTs and IR drops on supplied power line. Among them, we improved irrecoverable residual images of AMOLED displays which is mainly related to the hysteresis characteristics of driving TFTs. We consider four kinds of surface treatment conditions before gate oxide deposition for improving hysteresis characteristics. We can reduce the hysteresis level of p-channel TFT to 0.23 V, interface trap states between the poly-Si layer and gate insulator to $3.11{\times}10^{11}cm^{-2}$, and output current variation of p-channel TFT to 3.65 % through the surface treatment using ultraviolet light and H2 plasma. Therefore, the recoverable residual image problem of AMOLED displays can be improved by surface treatment using ultraviolet light and $H_2$ plasma.

  • We developed the equipment to measure the MTF(modulation transfer function) of an optical system for automatically inspecting the surface condition of an LCD substrate. We have made an object generator with USAF(United States Air Force) targets of three bar patterns and an integrating sphere, and an image analyzer with a 2 dimensional CCD(charge coupled device) and a relay lens. The MTF of the lens under test was obtained by correcting the measured CTF(contrast transfer function) which is the ratio of the contrast in the image of the USAF target to the contrast in the object. We have measured an optical system of F/13.65 (2.6x), the MTF are 30.6 % tangential plane and 26.1 % sagittal plane at 62.5 1p/mm.

  • The sustainable development principle of replacing natural resources with renewable material is an important research topic. In this study, waste LCD (liquid crystal display) glass powder was used to replace cement (0%, 10%, 20% and 30%) through a volumetric method using three water-binder ratios (0.47, 0.59, and 0.71) to make cement mortar. The compressive strength was tested at the ages of 7, 28, 56 and 91 days. The test results show that the compressive strength increases with age but decreases as the water-binder ratio increases. The compressive strength slightly decreases with an increase in the replacement of LCD glass powder at a curing age of 7 days. However, at a curing age of 91 days, the compressive strength is slightly greater than that for the control group (glass powder is 0%). When the water-binder ratios are 0.47, 0.59 and 0.71, the compressive strength of the various replacements increases by 1.38-1.61 times, 1.56-1.80 times and 1.45-2.20 times, respectively, during the aging process from day 7 to day 91. Furthermore, a prediction model of the compressive strength of a cement mortar with waste LCD glass powder was deduced in this study. According to the comparison between the prediction analysis values and test results, the MAPE (mean absolute percentage error) values of the compressive strength are between 2.79% and 5.29%, and less than 10%. Thus, the analytical model established in this study has a good forecasting accuracy. Therefore, the proposed model can be used as a reliable tool for assessing the design strength of cement mortar from early age test results.

  • The waste solution discharged form the LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) manufacturing process contains phosphoric acid, nitric acid, acetic acid and metal ions such Al and other impurities. In this study, vacuum evaporation and diffusion dialysis was developed to commercialize an efficient system for recovering the high-purity phosphoric acid and manufacturing monoammonium phosphate. By vacuum evaporation, almost 99% of nitric and acetic acid was removed. Also, by diffusion dialysis, about 97.5% of Al was removed. Monoammonium phosphate was manufactured from purified phosphoric acid and ammonium hydroxide. In order to get the optimum manufacturing condition, the molar ratio of ammonium hydroxide and phosphoric acid, pH and temperature was controlled. Using this optimum condition, we obtained the recovery rate of monoammonium phosphate of about 90%.

  • Fractal-space multiplexing using a moving window(MW) can multiplex holograms by moving a window left and right. and up and down. But, crosstalk occurs by two neighboring moving windows in the vertical direction of the holographic memory system and limits high-density information recording. Accordingly, we analyzed the crosstalk with the focal length of lens, the distance of MW, and the number of multiplexed hologram to record high-density infromation and presented the optical experimental results of fractal-space multiplexing using volumetric photorefractive crystal and disc type photopolymer.

  • The amount of vapor mercury for the generation of glow discharge plasma has been calculated in a fine tube fluorescent lamp having a mixed gas of Ne+Ar including a mercury. When the ionization of atom is considered by the collision between neutral atoms (Ne, Ar, Hg) and electrons of energy $kT_e{\sim}1\;eV$, the density of vapor mercury atom has been obtained as $n(Hg){\sim}3.43{\times}10^{22}m^{-3}$ for the plasma density $n_o{\sim}10^{17}m^{-3}$. In the fluorescent lamps of out diameter 4 mm used for $32{\sim}42$-inch LCD-TVs having a mixture gas of Ne(95%)+Ar(5%) with the pressure of 50 Torr, the quantity of vapor mercury for the glow discharge has been caculated as 0.02{\sim}0.08\;mg$.
