Electro-optical Characteristics of Twisted Nematic(TN)-LCD using New Ion Beam Equipment (새로운 이온빔장치를 사용한 Twisted Nematic-LCD의 전기광학특성)

  • We studied liquid crystal (LC) alignment with ion beam (IB) on polyimide and electro-optical characteristics of twisted nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) on the polyimide surface using obliquely ion beam (IB) exposure with new IB type equipment. A good uniform alignment of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with the ion beam exposure on the polyimide surface was observed. In addition, it can be achieved the good EO properties of the ion-beam-aligned TN-LCD on polyimide surface. Also, the EO characteristics of the ion-beam-aligned TN-LCD on a polyimide (PI) surface with ion beam exposure using new type IB equipment is same or more superior than ion-beam-aligned TN-LCD on a polyimide (PI) surface with ion beam exposure using Kaufman-type Ar ion gun.

  • It is widely investigated to liquid crystal (LC) alignment using non-contact alignment method such as ion-beam (IB) irradiation, UV alignment, and oblique deposition. Because conventional rubbing method has some drawbacks. These include defects from dust and electrostatic charges and rubbing scratch during rubbing process. In addition, rubbing method needs additional process to remove these defects. Therefore rubbing-free methods like ion-beam irradiation are strongly required. We studied LC alignment effect on poly imide surface by IB irradiation and electro-optical (EO) characteristics of twisted nematic liquid crystal display (TN-LCD). In this experiment, a good uniform alignment of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with the ion-beam exposure on the polyimide (PI) (SE-150 from Nissan Chemical) surface was observed. We also achieved low pretilt angle as a function of ion-beam irradiation intensity. In addition, it can be obtained the good EO properties of the IB-aligned TN-LCD on PI surface. Some other experiments results and discussion will be included in the poster.

  • Electro-optical (EO) characteristics of twisted nematic (TN) - liquid crystal display (LCD) on the NDLC thin film using obliquely ion beam (IB) exposure as new ion beam (IB) type system (DuoPIGatrion ion source). A good uniform alignment of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with the ion beam exposure on the NDLC thin film was observed. In addition, it can be achieved the good EO properties of the ion-beam-aligned TN-cell on polyimide surface ; the stable VT curve in the ion-beam-aligned TN cell on the NDLC thin film with ion beam exposure using new type IB equipment was obtained. and the fast response time in the ion-beam-aligned TN cell on the NDLC thin film with ion beam exposure using new type IB equipment was obtained.

In this experiment, polyimide layer was coated on glass by spin-coating and Voltage-transmittance(VT) and response time characteristics of the TN cell were measured by a LCD evaluation system. The good characteristics of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with the ion beam exposured polyimide surface was observed. In addition, it can be achieved the good EO properties, and residual DC property of the ion beam aligned TN cell on polyimide surface.

  • To date, rubbing has been widely used to align LC molecules uniformly. Although rubbing can be simple, it has fundamental problems such as the generation of defects by dust and static electricity, and difficulty in achieving a uniform LC alignment on a large substrate. Therefore, non contact alignment has been investigated. Ion beam induced alignment method, which provides controllability, nonstop process, and high resolution display. In this study, we investigated liquid crystal (LC) alignment with ion beam (IB) that non contact alignment technique on polyimide and electro-optical characteristics of twisted nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) on the polyimide under various ion beam angles.   • Electro-optical (EO) performances of the ion beam (IB) aligned twisted-nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) with ion beam exposure on the new diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin film surface were investigated. A good voltage-transmittance (V-T) curve of the ion beam aligned TN-LCD with oblique ion beam exposure on the DLC thin film surface for 1 min was observed. Also, the fast response time of the ion beam aligned TN-LCD with oblique ion beam exposure on the DLC thin film surface for 1 min can be achieved. Finally, the residual DC voltage of the ion beam aligned TN-LCD on the DLC thin film surface is almost the same as that of the rubbing aligned TN-LCD on a polyimide (Pl) surface.

  • The electro-optical (EO) characteristics of the one-side rubbing twisted nematic (TN) - liquid crystal display (LCD) on the polyimide (PI) surface with one-side ion beam (IB) irradiation were successfully studied. The good LC alignment for the one-side rubbing TN-LCD on the PI surface with one-side IB irradiation was observed. The suitable transmittance-voltage curves for the one-side rubbing TN-LCD on the PI surface with one-side IB irradiation were measured. Also, the good response time characteristics of the one-side rubbing TN-LCD on the PI surface with one-side IB irradiation were measured. The fast response time can be achieved for the one-side rubbing TN-LCD on the PI surface with one-side IB irradiation.

  • We used Brewster's Law to examine the mechanism of liquid crystal (LC) alignment on an organic insulation layer when subjected to ion-beam irradiation. Brewster's Law implies that the maximum rate polarized rayon a slanted insulation layers on the substrate and it illustrates the dependence of polarization and themechanical structure on the ion beam irradiation process. The pretilt angle of nematic LCs on the organic insulation surface was about $1.13^{\circ}$ for an ion beam exposure of $45^{\circ}$ for 1 minute at 1800eV. This shows the dependence of LC alignment on the polarization ratio in a slanted organic insulation layer. We also discussed the electro-optical characteristic of twisted nematic (TN) LCD using ion beam irradiation on organic overcoat layer.
