  • In this study, vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) data at several isothermal temperatures for carbon dioxide and ethane binary systems were estimated using binary interaction parameters (BIP's) in Peng-Robinson (PR) equation of state built-in PRO/II with PROVISION (PRO/II) process simulator. Moreover, BIP's in PR equation of state were newly determined by regressing the experimental VLE data for carbon dioxide and ethane systems for each different isothermal temperatures using the summation of squares of the bubble point deviations as an objective function. Comparative works have been performed for absolute average deviation % (AAD(%)) between experimental and predicted bubble pressures using built-in BIP's in PRO/II and newly regressed one, respectively. Our calculation results gave a better estimation result than the simulation result using an existing parameter built-in PRO/II.

  • The essential oil of Korean ginger(Zingiber officinale Roscoe) was isolated by liquid carbon dioxide extraction method and fractionated into one hydrocarbon fraction and two oxygenated hydrocarbon fractions by using silica gel column chromatography. The compositions of the resulting oils were investigated by GC and GC-MS spectrometry. Out of 102 identified compounds, 44 were identified by comparing GC retention time and mass spectral data with authentic samples and 58 were tentatively identified according to mass spectral data only. The major compounds of hydrocarhon fraction were $zingiberene,\;{\beta}-sesquiphellandrene,\;{\gamma}-bisabolene,\;{\gamma}-cardinene,\;ar-curcumene$, and those of oxygenated hydrocarbon fractions wee geranal, sesquisabinene hydrate, borneol and zingiberenol. The major compounds of ginger oil were zingiberene, $citronellol+{\beta}-sesquiphellandrene,\;geranial,\;{\gamma}-bisabolene\;and\;ar-curcumene+geranyl\;acetate$, and ginger oil contained higher amounts of sesquiterpene hydrocarbons. The yield of extract was 6.96%.

  • Phase behavior of carbon dioxide + surfactant binary system and carbon dioxide + surfactant + water ternary system was investigated at the temperatures from 318 K to 348 K by using high pressure vapor liquid equilibrium apparatus containing variable-volume view cell. Sorbitan monopalmitate was used as the surfactant. The cloud point pressures for the binary mixture of carbon dioxide + sorbitan monopalmitate increased with an increasing of system temperatures and the maximum cloud point pressure was observed at the composition of 0.226 wt% of sorbitan monopalmitate. On the other hand, as the temperatures and compositions of water increased, the cloud point pressures for ternary system containing 0.1 wt% of sorbitan monopalmitate increased significantly. For the ternary system of constant 0.2 wt% of water, the cloud point pressure curves show relatively flat according to the change of compositions of surfactant. The cloud point pressures increased when the temperatures and compositions of water increased.

  • Optimum conditions for benzene synthesis and liquid scintillation counting have been studied for the determination of radiocarbon age. In benzene synthesis the carbon dioxide converted to benzene with high efficiency of 91%. Yields of each step with 10L of carbon dioxide were $CO_2$ $\rightarrow$$C_2H_2$(94%), $C_2H_2$$\rightarrow$$C_6H_6$(96%) and$CO_2$$\rightarrow$$C_6H_6$(91%), respectively. Benzene synthesized from oxalate was measured with purity of 95% by GC /MS. $\delta^13$(C$^13$C/$^12$C) of oxalate was measured to $-24.7\{textperthousand}$ by massspectrometer. For liquid scintillation counting of benzene sample low background and highest FOM were measured in 0.5 ml cocktail and 3 ml standard solution with the range of 15.4∼74.9 KeV window setting. Oxalate and background samples weremeasured to $28.7\pm0.12$cpm and $3.92\pm0.04$ cpm in 15.4∼74.9 KeV

  • The study is aiming to prepare supported ionic liquid membranes for carbon dioxide separation efficiently. The ionic liquid, [bmim][${PF_6}^-$] (1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium hexafluorophosphate) was fixed in the pores of PVDF micro-filtration membrane with a nominal pore size 0.1 ${\mu}m$. The permeabilities of $N_2$, $H_2$ and $CO_2$ gases through the prepared ionic liquid membrane were 0.075, 0.203 and 1.380 GPU, respectively. The selectivities of $CO_2/N_2$, $H_2/N_2$ were 14.2 and 2.69, respectively. Also, the supported ionic liquid membrane could be operated stably up to 2.0 bar with the immobilization of ionic liquid in the pores.

  • The carbon nanofibers (CNFs) were synthesized through the catalytic decomposition of hydrocarbons in a quartz tube reactor. The CNFs prepared from $C_3H_8$ at $550^{\circ}C$ was selected as the purification sample due to the higher content of impurity than that prepared from other conditions. In this study, we carried out the purification of CNFs by oxidation in air or carbon dioxide after acid treatment, and investigated the influence of purification parameters such as kind of acid, concentration, oxidation time, and oxidation temperature on the structure of CNFs. The metal catalysts could be easily eliminated from the prepared CNFs by liquid phase purification with various acids and it was verified by ICP analysis, in which, for example, Ni content decreased from 2.51% to 0.18% with 8% nitric acid. However, the particulate carbon and heterogeneous fibers were not removed from the prepared CNFs by thermal oxidation in air and carbon dioxide. This result can be explained by that the direction of graphene sheet in CNFs is vertical to the fiber axis and the CNFs are oxidized at about the similar rate with the impurity carbon.

  • A simulation study on SCR(steam carbon dioxide reforming) in gas-to-liquid(natural gas to Fischer-Tropsch synthetic fuel) process was carried out in order to find optimum reaction conditions for SCR experiment. Optimum operating conditions for SCR process were determined by changing reaction variables such as temperature and $CH_4/steam/CO_2$ feed ratio. Simulation was carried out by Aspen Plus. During the simulation, overall process was assumed to proceed under steady-state conditions. It was also assumed that physical properties of reaction medium were governed by RKS(Redlich-Kwong-Soave) equation. Optimum simulation variables such as temperature and feed ratio were determined by considering $H_2/CO$ ratio for FTS(Fischer-Tropsch synthesis), $CH_4$ conversion, and $CO_2$ conversion. Simulation results showed that optimum reaction temperature and $CH_4/steam/CO_2$ feed ratio in SCR process were $850^{\circ}C$ and 1.0/1.6/0.7, respectively. Under optimum temperature of $850^{\circ}C$, $CH_4$ conversion and $CO_2$ conversion were found to be 99% and 49%, respectively.

  • Lentinula edodes liquid spawn growth under explosive aeration (supplying air with tiny bubbles) and soybean meal addition to liquid culture medium were investigated in terms of mycelial growth and residual free sugar content. The two treatments were effective for homogeneous culturing of mycelial spawn and for separating colonies during multiplication after an exponential growth period without limiting sustaining nitrogen nutrients. The mycelial growth and carbon dioxide concentration were greatest on the 13th day since the inoculation. At 12th day, however, free sugars were almost depleted in the upper part of the liquid medium. Total nitrogen content within precipitated mycelia was the highest at the 13th day. Chitin and sucrose contents in the mycelia were the highest at the 18th day, but ergosterol content became highest at 22 days. These results suggest that Lentinula edodes liquid spawn is ready in 18 days after inoculation.
