  • This study has examined the microstructural development in the Bridgman type directional solidification of hyper-peritectic Sn-Cd alloys, and the temperature and flow field have been numerically simulated to see if there is any change induced by convection. The directional solidification experiments carried out in quartz tubes with inside diameters of 0.4∼6mm showed that the resulting microstructures are clearly dependent on the size of tube diameters. The bigger ampoules where the effect of convection is highly expected produced saw-like structures resulting from the primary $\alpha$ and peritectic $\beta$ phase growing together at a planar solid-liquid front, with the former being surrounded by the latter. In the smaller ampoules, where the effect of convection is expected low however, the saw structure disappears, and as is understood from the theoretical prediction based on diffusion-controlled solidification the initial growth of the primary $\alpha$ phase is replaced by the nucleation of the peritectic $\beta$ phase whose growth continues to the end of the solidification.

  • Decomposition promoting factors and decomposition mechanism in the zinc decomposition process of waste hard metals which are composed mostly of tungsten carbide and cobalt were evaluated. Zinc volatility amount was suppressed and zinc valatilization pressure was produced in the reaction graphite crucible inside an electric furnace for ZDP. Reaction was done for 2 h at $650^{\circ}C$, which 100 % decomposed the waste hard metals that were over 30 mm thick. As for the separation-decomposition of waste hard metals, zinc melted alloy formed a liquid composed of a mixture of ${\gamma}-{\beta}1$ phase from the cobalt binder layer (reaction interface). The volume of reacted zone was expanded and the waste hard metal layer was decomposed-separated horizontally from the hard metal. Zinc used in the ZDP process was almost completely removed-collected by decantation and volatilization-collection process at $1000^{\circ}C$.

  • By using the centrifugal atomization, which is one of the rapid solidification processes, Al-5,10wt%Pb alloys which are monotectic alloys were melted at 150K over two liquid phase line in the phase diagram. The melted alloy was poured on the rotating disk, being made into atomized powders, and then the solidified microstructure and morphology of the powder were investigated. This study converted the produced powders into strips by strained powder rolling. According to sintering temperature, the microstructure and hardness were investigated. The solidified structure of the powders were almost cellular dendritic structure. Pb particles ($2.0-3.0{\mu}m$) were fairl distributed in the Al matrix. Powder shapes were irregular. Rolling property and the compacting was good, respectively, because of increasing mechanical interlocking and surface area in the small size powders. With increasing temperature, the boundarys of powders were in porous form due to the diffusion. Pb particles which were surrounding the pores were inverse-segregated at the surface of the powders. With increasing of sintering temperature, the hardness of the powders and the strips decreased. In particular rolling-strip, the hardness abruptly decreased due to the release of work-hardening.

  • Bellows is used to control temperature of a Joule-Thomson micro cryocooler. It is made of Nickelcobalt alloy that retains mechanical properties from cryogenic temperature to temperature of 570K. The geometry of bellows is an axisymmetric shell and Nitrogen with high pressure was charged at temperature of 293K. During cool-down process, the pressure and volume of Nitrogen are changed and must be satisfied with state equation. At cryogenic temperature, Nitrogen can exist as a part liquid and part vapor. Pressure-density-temperature behavior under this vaporliquid phase equilibrium is closely given by the Modified-Benedict-Webb-Rubin(MBWR) state equation. To evaluate deformation of bellows for temperature change, the numerical calculation of the volume within bellows and finite element analysis of bellows under internal pressure were iteratively performed until MBWR state equation is satisfied. The numerical results show that deformation of the bellows can be analyzed by the present method in a wide range of temperature including cryogenic temperature.

  • The thin film that is electrically conductive and optically transparent is called conductive transparent thin film. ITO(Indium-Tin Oxide) which is a kind of conductive transparent thin film has been widely used in solar cell, transparent electrical heater, selective optical filter, FDP(Flat Display Panel) such as LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), PDP(Plasma Display Panel) and so on. Especially in PDP, ITO films is used as a transparent electrode in order to maintain discharge and decrease consumption power through the improvement of cell structure. In this study, we prepared ITO by reactive r.f. sputtering with indium-tin(Sn wt 10%) alloy target instead of indium-tin oxide target. The ITO films deposited at low temperature $150^{\circ}C$ and 8% $O_2$ partial pressure showed about $3.6{\Omega}/{\square}$. At the end of firing, the resistance of ITO was decreased, the optical transparence was improved above 90%.

  • Friction stir welding using aluminum alloys has been widely applied for transportation vehicles because of the light specific weight, which can be used to obtain sound joint and high mechanical properties. This study shows the effects of rotation speed, welding speed, welding load, and tool shape on defect formation with extruded AA6005, which is used for railway vehicle structures of non-uniform thickness welded by friction stir welding using load control systems. Optical microscopy observations and liquid penetrant testing of each FSW joint were carried out in order to observe defect formation. Two kinds of defects, that of probe wear and that of lack of penetration in the bottom of the welded zone, were observed. In the case of using a taper shaped tool, the defect free zone is very narrow, within 100 kgf; however, in case of using a cylindrical shape tool, the defect free zone is wider.

  • VAR process is required to control its various operating parameters. Heat transfer simulation has been accomplished to understand development of solidification micro and macro-structures during VAR process in Ti alloys. Optimum VAR process parameters could be also estimated in this study. It was found that macro-structures were closely related to the shape and depth of liquid pool, and solidification parameters, such as temperature gradient, heat flux, solid fraction. The cooling rates were higher at bottom, top, and center part respectively. As cooling rates increased, the $\alpha$ phase decreased in length, width and fraction. In order to evaluate which parameter affects the result of heat transfer calculation most sensitively, the sensitivities of input parameters to the simulation result were examined. The pool depth and cooling rate showed more sensitive to the temperature of the molten metal, heat transfer coefficient, and liquidus respectively. Also, these thermal properties became more sensitive at higher temperatures.

  • Friction stir welding is one of the interesting welding methods for titanium and its alloy which proceeds with plastic flow due to thermo-mechanical stirring and friction heat. Solid-state welding can solve severe problems such as high-temperature oxidation, interstitial oxygen diffusion and grain coarsening by liquid-state welding. Dynamic recrystallization and grain refinement can vary significantly with the plunging load and rotational speed of tool during friction stir welding, and suitable process conditions must be optimized to obtain microstructure and better mechanical characteristics. Suitable FSW conditions were 1000 kg of plunging load and 200 rpm of rotational speed and it showed YS 270 MPa, UTS 332.1 MPa, and El 17.3%, which were very similar to those of wrought titanium sheet.

  • In the present study, we show that the addition of Ag, an element having a positive enthalpy of mixing with Cu in the liquid state, enables the simultaneous enhancement of the glass forming ability and the plasticity in Cu-Zr-Ag bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). Rods of 4 mm diameter could be prepared with a fully amorphous structure and values of plastic strain up to 18% were measured under a compression mode for compositions around $Cu_{42.5}Zr_{47.5}Ag_{10}$. The possible role of Ag in the change of the atomic structure and the enhancement of the plastic strain in the ternary Cu-Zr-Ag BMGs is discussed based on analyses from transmission electron microscopy and EXAFS (extended X-ray absorption fine structure).

  • W-Ni-Fe heavy alloys have been used in various fields, such as kinetic energy penetrators and radiation shielding materials, due to their high density and good mechanical properties. In this study, the sintering of W-Ni-Fe alloys with various Ni/Fe ratios was demonstrated to improve the mechanical properties and penetration capabilities of heavy alloys by formation of interfacial phase. The microstructural changes and the mechanical properties of the W-Ni-Fe alloys after liquid-phase sintering were investigated. The Vickers hardness and tensile strength of the 95W1.3Ni3.7Fe sample, which had coated W grains by $Fe_7W_6$ phase (${\mu}$-phase), were 450 Hv and 1560 MPa, respectively. As a result, enhancement of the mechanical properties was considered to have uniformly generated ${\mu}$-phase around W grains.
