  • In ready mixed concrete factory, in case of using the high molecular additive in winter especially the liquid additive for the early strength, it is required to check the stability. In this research, the freezing and gelling characteristics of the liquid additive for the early strength is reviewed, the material and mechanical solution are proposed to that the practical quality control method will be suggested. As the result, the Freezing temperature of the liquid additive for the early strength is $-11.8^{\circ}C$, and it is the lower than the temperature at which the strength is shown. By making with sodium silicate of $37{\pm}0.5%$ designed by $SiO_2\;and\;Na_2O$ in 0.31 of mol ratio, it minimizes the gelling at the lower temperature. On the other hand, facilities for storing and supplying the material should be set at $40^{\circ}C$ so the temperature distribution is well spreaded for practical operation.

  • The cycling behavior of $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ electrode in the ionic liquid (IL)-based electrolytes containing 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide and a small amount of additive (vinylene carbonate, ethylene carbonate, fluoroethylene carbonate) was investigated. The $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ electrode in the IL electrolyte with an additive exhibited reversible cycling behavior with good capacity retention. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and FTIR studies revealed that an electrochemically stable solid electrolyte interphase was formed on the $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ electrode in the presence of vinylene carbonate and ethylene carbonate during cycling.

  • Generally, to product multi-grade oil like engine oil, a sort of mineral base oil is mixed with a fundamental additive package liquid and a polymer liquid as viscosity index improver in order to improve the lubricating property of base oil. That is, engine oil is the mixture of more than two fluids. Specially, a polymeric type liquid cannot be seen as the linear viscosity like Newtonian fluids. In this research, by using the governing equation describing non-Newtonian hydrodynamic lubrication related with the mixture of incompressible fluids based on the principle of continuum mechanics, it will be compared the bearing performance between the mixture of each liquid to be blended and multi-grade engine oil as a single fluid in a high speed hydrodynamic journal bearing. Further, it is to be found the way estimating the performance of the blended multi-grade engine lubricant in a journal bearing in advance before blending by using the physical properties of mineral base oil, fundamental additive liquid and polymer liquid of viscosity index improver. So, it can be reduced the number of trial and error to get the wanted lubricant by selecting the proper volume fraction of each liquid to satisfy the expected performance and estimating in advance the performance of various multi-grade oils before blending. Therefore, it can be shorten the developing time and saved the developing cost.

  • PURPOSES: The liquid-type chemical warm-mix asphalt (WMA) additive has been developed. This study evaluates the basic properties of the additive and the mechanical properties of WMA asphalt and mixture manufactured by using the newly developed chemical additive. METHODS: First, the newly developed WMA additive was applied to the original asphalt by various composition of additive components and dosage ratio of additive. These WMA asphalt binders were evaluated in terms of penetration, softening point, rotational viscosity, and PG grade. Based on the binder test results, one best candidate was chosen to apply to the mixture and then the mechanical properties of WMA mixture were evaluated for moisture susceptibility, dynamic modulus, and rutting and fatigue resistance. RESULTS : According to the binder test, WMA asphalt binders showed the similar properties to the original asphalt binder except the penetraion index of WMA additive was a little higher than original binder. From the Superpave mix design, the optimum asphalt content and volumetric properties of WMA mixture were almost the same with those of hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixture even though the production and compaction temperatures were $30^{\circ}C$ lower for the WMA mixture. From the first set of performance evaluation, it was found that the WMA mixture would have some problem in moisture susceptibility. The additive was modified to improve the resistance to moisture and the second set of performance evaluation showed that the WMA mixture with modified chemical additive would have the similar performance to HMA mixture. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the various laboratory tests, it was concluded that the newly developed chemical WMA additve could be successfully used to produce the WMA mixture with the comparable performance to the HMA mixture. These laboratory evaluations should be confirmed by applying this additive to the field and monitoring the long-term performance of the pavement, which are scheduled in the near future.

  • Recently, there has been an increase in additive manufacturing for the fabrication of liquid rocket engines. This technology can innovate conventional fabrication methods to reduce the lead time and manufacturing cost and can enhance the performances such as weight reduction. In this study, a literature survey is presented that includes types, advantages, disadvantages, and foreign government-based projects of the technology related to liquid rocket engine manufacturing. The present survey focuses on the technology that has been applied to various components such as turbopumps and valves while much larger efforts are made for combustion chambers with regenerative cooling channels and diverging nozzles, as the advantages of the technology are maximized for the applications.

  • This study reports on the influence of N-butyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate ($PYR_{14}BF_4$) ionic liquid additive on the conducting and interfacial properties of organic solvent based electrolytes against a carbon electrode. We used the mixture of ethylene carbonate/dimethoxyethane (1:1) as an organic solvent electrolyte and tetraethylammonium tetrafluoroborate ($TEABF_4$) as a common salt. Using the $PYR_{14}BF$ ionic liquid as additive produced higher ionic conductivity in the electrolyte and lower interface resistance between carbon and electrolyte, resulting in improved capacitance. The chemical and electrochemical stability of the electrolyte was measured by ionic conductivity meter and linear sweep voltammetry. The electrochemical analysis between electrolyte and carbon electrode was examined by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.

In this paper, it will be systematically organized the governing equation describing non-Newtonian thermo-hydrodynamic lubrication related with the mixture of incompressible fluids based on the principle of continuum mechanics. It is found that, in the case of lower viscosity oil, the difference of pressure distribution between the above two cases turns out to be existed, even if the load capacity is same level.

  • Effects of a carboxylated styrene-butadiene-based liquid additive on the microstructure, mechanical strength and decolorization resistance of inorganic pigment layer in the color block have been examined. More dense inorganic pigment layer characterized by lower apparent porosity, lower water absorption and uniform pigment distribution has been achieved by incorporation of a liquid additive. Also significant enhancements in the mechanical strength and decolorization resistance have been observed.

  • An experimental study is presented for extinguishing characteristics of liquid fuel fire by water mist containing sodium acetate trihydrate. To evaluate the extinguishing performance of water mist containing an additive, the evaporation characteristics of a water droplet on a heated surface was examined. The evaporation process was recorded by a charge-coupled-device camera. Also, small-scale extinguishing tests were conducted for n-heptane pool fire in ventilated space to measure flame temperature variation. The average evaporation rate of a water droplet containing an additive was lower than that of a pure water droplet at a given surface temperature due to the precipitation of salt in the liquid-film and change of surface tension. In case of using an additive, the flame temperature was lower than that of pure water at a given discharge pressure and it was because the momentum of a water droplet containing an additive was increased reducing flame size. And also dissociated metal atoms, sodium, were reacted as a scavenger of the major radical species OH^-,\;H^+$ which were generated for combustion process. Moreover, at a high pressure of 4MPa, the fire was extinguished through blowing effect as well as primary extinguishing mechanisms.
