  • The breakup characteristics of liquid sheets formed by like-doublet injector were investigated in the cold-flow and atmospheric ambient pressure condition. The sheet breakup wavelength, which induces the sheet to be broken into ligaments, as well as the sheet breakup length, which is important for the flame location, was measured using a stroboscopic light. The liquid ligaments are formed intermittently after the breakup of sheet, and the wavelength of ligaments has been believed to have a relation to the combustion instability of liquid rocket engine. Therefore, the wavelength of ligaments and the breakup length of ligaments into fine drops were also measured. Since these spray characteristics are affected by the flow characteristics of two liquid jets before they impinge on each other, we focused on the effects of orifice internal flow such as the cavitation phenomenon that occurs inside the sharp-edged orifice. From the experimental results, we found that the liquid jet turbulence delays the sheet breakup and makes shorter wavelengths for both sheets and ligaments. Since the turbulent strength of sharp-edged orifice is stronger than that of round-edged orifice, the shape of orifice entrance results in large differences in the spray characteristics. Using these results, we proposed empirical models on the spray characteristics of the like-doublet injector, and these models are believed to provide some useful and actual data for designing liquid rocket combustors.

  • In this study, cooling characteristics of combustion gas were investigated by injecting liquid nitrogen into liquid rocket combustion chamber. A injection ring of liquid nitrogen was installed between a combustion chamber and a mixing chamber which was designed for mixing of combustion gas and nitrogen. At first, a ignition test of liquid rocket engine was conducted to verify a stable combustion process and 10 second combustion tests were successfully conducted. The results showed that combustion gas of LRE could be cooled by using liquid nitrogen.

  • Space propulsion system produces required thrust for satellites and space launch vehicles by using chemical reactions of a liquid fuel and a liquid oxidizer typically. For example, monomethylhydrazine-dinitrogen tetroxide, liquid hydrogen-liquid oxygen and RP-1-liquid oxygen are conventional combinations of liquid propellants used for the liquid propulsion system. Among several liquid propellants, the monomethylhydrazine is expecially preferred for a satellite fuel due to its better storability in liquid phase during a relatively long mission period under a space environment. Thus, a development importance of a bipropellant system using the monomethylhydrazine fuel is recognized recently as the national space program proceeds on a large scale. The objective of the present study is to review a foreign research trend of a thermal decomposition reaction of monomethyhydrazine to understand a fundamental basis of its chemical reaction to prepare for domestic development in future.

  • The effect of a water-miscible ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate $([BMIM][BF_4])$, on the horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-catalyzed oxidation of 2-methoxyphenol (guaiacol) with hydrogen peroxide $(H_2O_2)$ was investigated. HRP maintains its high activity in the aqueous mixtures containing various concentrations of the ionic liquid and even in 90% (v/v) ionic liquid. In order to minimize the effect of solution viscosity on the kinetic constants of HRP catalysis, the enzymatic reactions in the subsequent kinetic study were performed in water-ionic liquid mixtures containing 25% (v/v) ionic liquid at maximum. As the concentration of $[BMIM][BF_4]$ increased for the oxidation of guaiacol by HRP, the $K_m$ value increased with a slight decrease in the $K_{cat}$ value: The $K_m$ value increased from 2.8 mM in 100% (v/v) water to 22.5mM in 25% (v/v) ionic liquid, indicating that ionic liquid significantly weakens the binding affinity of guaiacol to HRP.

  • We investigated the stability of all-trans-retinol on the liquid crystalline O/W emulsion composed of mainly alkyl polyglycerine, alkyl polyglucose and glycerine, and compared the activity of all-trans-retinol in the various forms of liquid crystal. Under certain conditions, novel liquid crystalline gel was formed around oil droplets, and layers of this liquid crystalline gel were very wide and rigid. (SWLC; Super Wide Liquid Crystal) SWLC was very helpful to stabilize retinol in O/W emulsion. After storage at 45 C for 4 weeks, all-trans-retinol in O/W emulsion composed of SWLC retained above 85% of the activity upon HPLC analysis, whereas those within no liquid crystalline emulsion gave 47% and normal liquid crystalline emulsion composed of fatty alcohols gave 40 60%. Retinol in oil phase is nealy insoluble in pure water, but in cosmetic emulsion systems can be slightly solubilized into water because emulsifiers and polyols in emulsion systems function as solubilizers. In this case, water in outer phase acts as a media for oxygen transporation$.$and thus destabilizes retinol. As a result, retinol in O/W emulsion has a tendency to become unstable. SWLC surrounding oil droplet which contains retinol is wide and rigid, therefore reduces contact between inner phase and outer phase To make SWLC, properties of emulsifiers are very important phase transition temperature should be high, and the structure of surfactants should be bulky, and their ratio should be suitable to make rigid and wide liquid crystalline gel layer in order to reduce contact between retinol in inner phase and water in outer phase.

  • This paper introduces empirical correlations to obtain the gas/liquid flow rates and the spray drop size of low viscosity liquid injected by Y-jet twin-fluid atomizers. The gas flow rate is well correlated with the gas injection pressure and the mixing point pressure, based on the compressible flow theory. Similarly, the liquid flow rate is determined by the liquid injection pressure and the mixing point pressure, and a simple correlation for the liquid discharge coefficient at the liquid port was deduced from the experimental results. The mixing point pressure, which is one of the essential parameters, was expressed in terms of the gas/liquid flow rate ratio and the mixing port length. Disintegration and atomization mechanisms both within the mixing port and outside the atomizer were carefully re-examined, and a "basic" correlation form representing the mean diameter of drops was proposed. The "basic" correlation was expressed in terms of the mean gas density within the mixing port, gas/liquid mass flow rate ratio and the Weber number. Though the correlation is somewhat complicated, it represents the experimental data within an accuracy of ${\pm}15%$.EX>${\pm}15%$.

  • New liquid crystalline (biphenylcarbonyloxy)benzoates with an achiral swallow-tail derived from 3-alkoxy-2- (alkoxymethyl)-1-propanol [(ROCH2)2CHCH2OH, R = Me, Et, Pr, Bu] were prepared. These liquid crystals exhibited the phase sequence (I-SmA-SmCalt-(SmCX)-Cr) and showed antiferroelectric-like Smectic C phase (SmCalt) at temperature lower, and temperature range broader than do the compounds containing a branched alkyl group as a swallow-tail. The temperature ranges of antiferroelectric phase were found to be 30-90 oC and crystallization temperatures were 4-60 oC. The binary mixture of an achiral swallow-tailed liquid crystal and a chiral antiferroelectric liquid crystal, (S)-MHPOBC showed antiferroelectric smectic C phase at temperature much lower than the single chiral antiferroelectric liquid crystal does.

  • Aggregation states ans electro-optic properties of a binary mixture by mixing a side chain type liquid crystalline polymer(LCP) and a low molecular weight liquid crystal(LMLC) have been studied. Side chain liquid crystalline polysiloxanes were synthesized from allyl bromide, p-hydroxy benzoic acid, p-cyanophenol, p-methoxyphenol and polysiloxanes. Low molecular weight liquid crystals were synthesized from allyl bromide, p-hydroxy benzoic acid and 4-cyano 4'-hydroxy biphenyl. And then, their properties were compared with blended liquid crystals. The thermal properties of the blended liquid crystals were evaluated using differential scanning calorimetry. The phase behavior of blended sample with temperature were also observed polarized microscope with hot stage. Thus, it seemed to us that a study of LC polysiloxanes with LMLC would be useful, especially in view of the fact that, systematic investigations have been carried out on the effects of changes in LCP/LMLC binary system on the properties of this relatively new type of liquid crystal.

  • Liquid PVC, which is used widely as fiber coating, has brilliant non-luster effect, but it decreases flexibility of coated fiber surface. We used liquid silicone rubber in elastomer series as a coating material to alleviate this problem. We have conducted the former liquid PVC processing and used pressure of roller and preliminary hardening of processing. In this experiment, We measured 70 degree of hardness, 10.3 MPa of tensile strength and 200fs of tensile elongation of Liquid PVC-coated plastic fiber. We measured 40 degree of hardness, 5.1 MPa of tensile strength and 460% of tensile elongation of Liquid silicone PVC-coated plastic fiber. Therefore, Without the second process, Liquid silicone rubber coating increased non-luster effect and flexibility of plastic fiber surface more than Liquid PVC coating.

  • Liquid biopsy, a minimally invasive procedure that causes minimal pain and complication risks to patients, has been extensively studied for cancer diagnosis and treatment. Moreover, it facilitates comprehensive quantification and serial assessment of the whole-body tumor burden. Several biosources obtained through liquid biopsy have been studied as important biomarkers for establishing early diagnosis, monitoring minimal residual disease, and predicting the prognosis and response to treatment in patients with cancer. Although the clinical application of liquid biopsy in gastric cancer is not as robust as that in other cancers, biomarker studies using liquid biopsy are being actively conducted in patients with gastric cancer. Herein, we aimed to review the role of various biosources that can be obtained from patients with gastric cancer through liquid biopsies, such as blood, saliva, gastric juice, urine, stool, peritoneal lavage fluid, and ascites, by dividing them into cellular and acellular components. In addition, we reviewed previous studies on the diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive biomarkers for gastric cancer using liquid biopsy and discussed the limitations of liquid biopsy and the challenges to overcome these limitations in patients with gastric cancer.
