  • MEMS structures generally have been fabricated using surface-machining method, but the interface failure between silicon substrate and evaporated thin film frequently takes place due to the residual stress inducing by the applied the various loads. And the very important physical property in the heated environment is the linear coefficient of thermal expansion. Therefore this paper studied the residual stress caused the thermal loads in the thin film and introduced the simple method to measure the trend of the residual stress by the indentation. Specimens were made of materials such as Al, Au and Cu and thermal load was applied repeatedly. The residual stress was measured by nano-indentation using AFM and FEA. The existence of the residual stress due to thermal load was verified by the experimental results. The indentation length of the thermal loaded specimens increased minimum 11.8% comparing with the virgin thin film caused by tensile residual stress. The finite element analysis results are similar to indentation test.

  • This paper proposes an auto-tuning method of feedforward signal in boiler control of thermal power plants by using the neural network. The neural network produces an optimal feedforward signal by tuning the weights of the network. The weights are adapted effectively by using the teaching signal of PI control output. The proposed method was evaluated based on a detailed simulator which expressed non-linear characteristics of the 600 MW actual thermal power plant at load chaning operations, showed effectiveness in the learning of the weights of the neural network, and gave an accurate control performance in the temperature control of the system. Through the evaluation, the proposed method was proved to be effectively applicable to the actual thermal plants as the automatic adjustment tool.

  • This paper deals with the optimization of blade stiffened composite panels. The main objective of the research is to make response surfaces for the constraints. The response surface for warping thermal deformation was previously made for a fixed dimension composite structure. In this study, the dimensions of the blade stiffener were treated as design variables. This meant that a new response surface technique was required for the constraints. For the response surfaces, the lamination parameters, linear thermal expansions and dimensions of the structures were used as variables. A genetic algorithm was adopted as an optimizer, and an optimal result, which satisfied two constraints, was obtained. As a result, a new response surface was obtained, for predicting warping thermal deformation.

  • A 2-dimensional numerical analysis is presented for thermal-electron heat conduction effects upon the electron transport and the drain current-voltage characteristics of submicron GaAs MESFETs, based on the use of a nonstationary hydrodynamic transport model. It is shown that for submicron GaAs MESFETs, electron heat conduction effects are significant on their internal electronic properties and also drain current-voltage characteristics. Due to electron heat conduction effects, the electron energy is greatly one-djmensionalized over the entire device region. Also, the drain current decreases continuously with increasing thermal conductivity in the saturation region of large drain voltages above 1 V. However, the opposite trend is observed in the linear region of small drain voltages below 1 V. Accordingly, for a large thermal conductivity, negative differential resistance drain current characteristics are observed with a pronounced peak of current at the drain voltage of 1 V. On the contrary, for zero thermal conductivity, a Gunn oscillation characteristic is observed at drain voltages above 2 V under a zero gate bias condition.

  • This paper focuses on post-buckling analysis of functionally graded Timoshenko beam subjected to thermal loading by using the total Lagrangian Timoshenko beam element approximation. Material properties of the beam change in the thickness direction according to a power-law function. The beam is clamped at both ends. The considered highly non-linear problem is solved by using incremental displacement-based finite element method in conjunction with Newton-Raphson iteration method. As far as the authors know, there is no study on the post-buckling analysis of functionally graded Timoshenko beams under thermal loading considering full geometric non-linearity investigated by using finite element method. The convergence studies are made and the obtained results are compared with the published results. In the study, with the effects of material gradient property and thermal load, the relationships between deflections, end constraint forces, thermal buckling configuration and stress distributions through the thickness of the beams are illustrated in detail in post-buckling case.

  • Hydrogen linear power system is estimated as the next generation power system which can obtain a performance as same as fuel cell. In order to develop Hydrogen combustion power system with high thermal efficiency, it is very important to understand the basic characteristics of hydrogen combustion and establish combustion stabilization technique of its system. In this study, RICEM(Rapid Intake Compression Expansion Machine) for researching of hydrogen combustion linear power system was manufactured and evaluated, and the basic characteristics of linear RICEM were analyzed.

  • Thermal shock tests at two stress levels were performed to see the life (cycles) of LPF ASSY (low pass filter assembly) at normal stress level. In this case Coffin-Manson relationship is generally used to describe the relationship between the temperature difference and the life, together with the Weibull distribution describing the life at each stress level. So for given data Coffin-Manson is fitted to predict the life at normal stress level. However, different types of models are appropriate for this type of test. Hence, a more appropriate model such as General log-linear model which can also incorporate the duration at the highest and lowest temperatures and acceleration time will be introduced.

  • The flame cell dynamics in 2-D opposed nonpremixed tubular configuration was investigated using high-fidelity numerical simulations. The diffusive-thermal instability occurs as the $Damk{\ddot{o}}hler$ number, Da, approaches the 1-D extinction limit of the tubular flames and several flame cells are generated depending on Da, and flame radius. In general, the number of flame cells are found close to the largest wave number from the linear stability analysis. It was also found from the displacement speed analysis that during the local flame extinction and cell formation, negative edge flame speed is observed due to small gain from reaction compared to large loss from diffusion.

  • A higher order zig-zag plate theory is developed to refine accurately predict fully coupled of the mechanical, thermal, and electric behaviors. Both the displacement and temperature fields through the thickness are constructed by superimposing linear zig-zag field to the smooth globally cubic varying field. Smooth parabolic distribution through the thickness is assumed in the transverse deflection in order to consider transverse normal deformation. Linear zig-zag form is adopted in the electric field. The layer-dependent degrees of freedom of displacement and temperature fields are expressed in terms of reference primary degrees of freedom by applying interface continuity conditions as well as bounding surface conditions of transverse shear stresses and transverse heat flux The numerical examples of coupled and uncoupled analysis are demonstrated the accuracy and efficiency of the present theory. The present theory is suitable for the predictions of fully coupled behaviors of thick smart composite plate under mechanical, thermal, and electric loadings.

  • The thermal characteristics of TMR devices by using Fast Linear Annealing method has been studied. A computer program that employs the finite differential method has been developed to simulate the temperature distribution of a diameter of 4" silicon wafer, which is subjected to radiation heat from the halogen lamp. We adopted the temperature of 350$\^{C}$, which is the highest temperature usually used in annealing for magnetic thin films. We changed moving velocity of the lamp from 0.05 mm/sec to 1 mm/sec. The moving velocity of halogen lamp has less effect on the local peak temperature of the sample only about 40$\^{C}$. Therefore, we may be able to anneal TMR devices in such short time of 1 minute and 40 seconds per one wafer, using the Fast Linear Annealing method.
