  • This paper considers the design and analysis of one-step ahead optimal and adaptive controllers, under the restriction that a known constraint on the input amplitude is imposed. It is assumed that the discrete-time single-input, single-output system to be controlled is linear, except for inequality constraints on the input. The objective function to be minimized is an one-step quadratic function, where polynomial weights on the input and output are included. Both the known parameter and unknown parameter (indirect adaptive controller) cases are examined.

  • In this paper, a relation of matrix Q in cost function to distances between the closed-loop and open-loop poles of a multi input controllable systems is studied. Futhmore, the state feedback gain with exact desired eigenvalues in the LQR is computed. The proposed scheme is applied to designing automotive active suspension control system for a half-car model and its performance is compared with the existing LQR control system design methodology.

  • This study deals with guidance and control laws for an optimal reentry trajectory of a vertical landing reusable launch vehicle (RLV) in the future. First, a guidance law is designed to create the reference trajectory which minimizes propellant consumption. Then, a nonlinear feedback controller based on a linear quadratic regulator is designed to make the vehicle follow the predetermined reference trajectory, The proposed method is simulated for the first stage of the H-II scale rocket.

  • In the fast sampling limit the delta operator model tends to the analog system model. This fundamental property of the delta operator model unifies continuous and discrete time control system. In this paper we study robust linear optimal model following servo system in the presence of disturbances and parameter perturbations. A technique to directly design the generalized differential operator based unified control system that covers both differential operator based continuous time and delta operator based discrete time case is presented. The quadratic criterion function for a linear system is used to design the robust unified servo control system The characteristics of the proposed servo system are analysed and simulated to verify the robustness.

  • Linear cheap control problem is a special form of linear quadratic regulator problem in which a small parameter ${\varepsilon}^2$ is multiplied with the control term. The joint problem in which cheap control is applied to a weakly coupled discrete system has not been reported in the literature. In this paper, the high-gain problem and decoupling problem on discrete weakly coupled system are considered together. We derive Hamiltonian matrix when the cheap control is applied to a weakly coupled discrete system and use it in developing numerical formulations in the process of applying parallel algorithm to the system.

  • This paper addresses the problem that policy iteration (PI) for continuous-time (CT) systems requires explorations of the state space which is known as persistency of excitation in adaptive control community, and as a result, proposes a PI scheme explorized by an additional probing signal to solve the addressed problem. The proposed PI method efficiently finds in online fashion the related CT linear quadratic (LQ) optimal control without knowing the system matrix A, and guarantees the stability and convergence to the LQ optimal control, which is proven in this paper in the presence of the probing signal. A design method for the probing signal is also presented to balance the exploration of the state space and the control performance. Finally, several simulation results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed explorized PI method.

  • The optimal thickness distribution of an active damping layer is sought so that it satisfies a certain constraint on the dynamic performance of a system minimizing control efforts. To obtain a topologically optimized configuration, which includes size and shape optimization, thickness of the active damping layer is interpolated using linear functions. With the control energy as the objective function to be minimized, the state error energy is introduced as the dynamic performance criterion for the system and used lot a constraint. The optimal control gains are evaluated from LQR simultaneously as the optimization of the layer position proceeds. From numerical simulation, the topologically optimized distribution of the active damping layer shows the same dynamic performance and cost as the Idly covered counterpart, which is optimized only in terms of control gains, with less amount of the layer.

  • This study proposes a scheme to design control parameters for a data center facility with a vibration controller on its top floor and a secondary isolation device with its own vibration controller designed to protect vibration-sensitive computer equipment. The aim is to reduce the effects of acceleration and drift from an earthquake on computer servers placed on the isolation device that must operate during a seismic event. A linear elastic model is constructed and the evaluation function of the linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control is formulated. The relationship between the control parameters and the responses is examined, and based on the observations, a control parameter design scheme is constructed to reduce the responses of both the building and the computer server effectively.

  • In this paper, piecewise quadratic Lyapunov functions are used to analyze the stability of fuzzy-model-based controller. We represent the nonlinear system using a Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model, which represent the given nonlinear system by fuzzy inference rules and local linear dynamic models. The proposed stability analysis technique is developed by dividing the whole fuzzy system into the smaller separate fuzry systems to reduce the conservatism. Some necessary and sufficient conditions for the proposed method are obtained. Finally, stability of the closed system with various kinds of controller for TS fuzzy model is checked through the proposed method.

  • The PLL equivalent augmented system incorporated with state feedback is proposed in this paper. The optimal value of filter time constant of loop filter in the phase-locked loop control system and the optimal state feedback gain designed by using linear quadratic regulator approach are derived. This approach allows the PLL control system to employ the large value of the phase-frequency gain $K_d$ and voltage control oscillator gain $K_o$. In designing, the structure of phase-locked loop control system will be rearranged to be a phase-locked loop equivalent augmented system by including the structure of loop filter into the process and by considering the voltage control oscillator as an additional integrator. The designed controller consisting of state feedback gain matrix K and integral gain $k_1$ is an optimal controller. The integral gain $k_1$ related to weighting matrices q and R will be an optimal value for assigning the filter time constant of loop filter. The experimental results in controlling the second-order lag pressure process using two types of loop filters show that the system response is fast without steady-state error, the output disturbance effect rejection is fast and the tracking to step changes is good.
