  • This paper reviews and describes some applications of perturbation theory in the practical analysis of linear systems which involve random parameters. Statistical measures of the system outputs are derived in terms of statistical measures of the system parameters and inputs (i.e., in the way of perturbed linear operator equations). Perturbed state transition matrix is also derived. With simple first-order and second-order linear system models, we compare the accuracy of perturbation results with the exact ones. And the convergence of perturbation series is also investigated.

  • In this study, the nonlinear vibrations of stepped beams having different boundary conditions were investigated. The equations of motions were obtained using Hamilton's principle and made non dimensional. The stretching effect induced non-linear terms to the equations. Forcing and damping terms were also included in the equations. The dimensionless equations were solved for six different set of boundary conditions. A perturbation method was applied to the equations of motions. The first terms of the perturbation series lead to the linear problem. Natural frequencies for the linear problem were calculated exactly for different boundary conditions. Second order non-linear terms of the perturbation series behave as corrections to the linear problem. Amplitude and phase modulation equations were obtained. Non-linear free and forced vibrations were investigated in detail. The effects of the position and magnitude of the step, as well as effects of different boundary conditions on the vibrations, were determined.

  • COBE's results on the anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) is discussed. Some ambiguities in the linear GI cosmic perturbation theory are clarified. The problem of the last scattering surface and the deficiencies of the linear cosmic perturbation theory are mentioned. The possible ways to overcome the theoretical difficulties are discussed also.

  • We present the preliminary result of our Lagrangian perturbation theory for the large-scale structure formation, in the presence of the cold dark matter (CDM) and the baryonic fluid. In the linear order, two mutually independent pseudo-particles can describe the evolution of density fluctuations and the accuracy of the calculation is better than the 4-mode (growing, decaying, streaming, compensated) Eulerian linear perturbation theory. In the $2^{nd}$ order, the separability of pseudo-particles is not as straightforward as in the linear order, and the related difficulty in developing the $2^{nd}$ order theory will also be presented.

  • The influence of observations on the Wilks' lambda test of a linear hypothesis in multivariate regression is investigated using the local influence method. The perturbation scheme of case-weights is considered. A numerical example is given to show the effectiveness of the local influence method in identifying the influential observations.

  • This paper presents the design of linear and circular polarization baseball- shaped circular microstrip antenna (BCMA) with 3-dimensional structure using perturbation effect to reduce its size, which runs at 1.575GHz frequency bandwidth. As a result, the size of linear polarized antenna could be reduced up to 23.7% in patch diameter and 41.8% in its area. Linear polarized antenna has -26.04dB of return loss, 69MHz(4.38%) of -l0dB bandwidth, 4.51dBd of gain, and its -3dB beamwidth are 99$^{\circ}$ in E-plane, 83$^{\circ}$ in H-plane. Circular polarized antenna has -17.43dB of return loss, 113.7MHz(7.2%) of -l0dB bandwidth, 2dBd of gain, 2dB of axial ratio and its -3dB beamwidth are 87$^{\circ}$, 86$^{\circ}$ x-axis polarized, 80$^{\circ}$, 84$^{\circ}$ y-axis polarized. It has 82mm of diameter, which is 28.5% of linear polarized CMPA. Therefore, in this paper we verified that baseball-shaped 3-dimensional structure of circular microstrip patch antenna applied with perturbation effect is appropriate for miniaturization.

  • This paper presents the sliding mode control with the perturbation estimator for a nonlinear control system in the presence of perturbations including external disturbances, unpredictable parameter variations, ana unstructured dynamics. The proposed perturbation estimator is based on the Recursive Linear Smoothed Newton predictive algorithm so that it is effective to attenuate an undesired noise in high frequency band and to predict the present perturbation signal from the previous ones. Compared to conventional sliding mode control (SMC) and sliding mode control with perturbation estimation (SMCPE) introduced by Elmali and Olgac, the control algorithm proposed in this study can offer better tracking control performances and more feasible estimation characteristics. The effectiveness and superiority of the proposed control strategy are demonstrated by a series of simulations on the position tracking control of a simple two-link robot manipulator subject to velocity feedback signals including white noises.

  • In this study, nonlinear transverse vibrations of tensioned Euler-Bernoulli nanobeams are studied. The nonlinear equations of motion including stretching of the neutral axis and axial tension are derived using nonlocal beam theory. Forcing and damping effects are included in the equations. Equation of motion is made dimensionless via dimensionless parameters. A perturbation technique, the multiple scale methods is employed for solving the nonlinear problem. Approximate solutions are applied for the equations of motion. Natural frequencies of the nanobeams for the linear problem are found from the first equation of the perturbation series. From nonlinear term of the perturbation series appear as corrections to the linear problem. The effects of the various axial tension parameters and different nonlocal parameters as well as effects of different boundary conditions on the vibrations are determined. Nonlinear frequencies are estimated; amplitude-phase modulation figures are presented for simple-simple and clamped-clamped cases.
