Photoneutron background spectroscopy observations at linac are essential for directing accelerator shielding and subtracting background signals. Therefore, we constructed a Bonner Sphere Spectrometer (BSS) system based on an array of BF3 gas proportional counter tubes. Initially, the response of the BSS system was simulated using the MCNP5 code. Next, the response of the system was calibrated by using neutrons with energies of 2.86 MeV and 14.84 MeV. Then, the system was employed to measure the spectrum of the 241Am-Be neutron source, and the results were unfolded by using the Gravel and EM algorithms. Using the validated system, the undesirable neutron spectrum of the 120 MeV electron linac was finally measured and acquired. In addition, it is demonstrated that the equivalent undesirable neutron dose at a distance of 3.2 m from the linac is 19.7 mSv/h. The results measured by the above methods could provide guidance for linac-related research.
The Pohang Accelerator Laboratory X-ray Free Electron Laser (PAL-XFEL) is a 0.1 nm hard X-ray FEL which aims at providing photon flux higher than $1{\times}10^{12}$ photons/pulse using a 10-GeV electron linac. The vacuum system of the machine consists of an injector section including an S-band photocathode RF gun, 10-GeV electron linac section based on S-band normal conducting accelerating structures and a 150-m long out-vacuum undulator system. We introduce the present status of PAL-XFEL vacuum systems.
The 2 GeV electron linac, the injector of the Pohang Light Source, was used as a photo-neutron source for radiation shielding research. The operational beam parameters are the nominal electron intensity of $0.5\;{\sim}5\;nC/sec$, the repetition rate of 10 Hz, and the beam pulse length of 1.0 nsec. One electron beam line was modified in order to install the target systems for producing pulsed photo-neutrons. The neutron spectrum and intensity were investigated by the time-of-flight technique. The reliable maximum energy of the measured neutrons was about 500 MeV. The number of neutrons above 20 MeV produced by one 1 GeV electron in a thick Pb target was about $6.45{\times}10^{-4}/sr$ at 90 degrees to the beam axis. The status of the photo-neutron source and the application research are presented.
The energy spectra for electron beam of medical linear accelerator were calculated using a GEANT4 Medical Linac 2 example code. The incident electron mean energy were 6, 9, 12, 16, 20 MeV. This code was designed to calculate electron beam energy spectra according to material, thickness and location of electron scattering foil affecting electron beam characteristic. Lead, Copper, Aluminum and Gold were used for scattering foil. The energy distribution for electron and photon were analyzed by changing position of scattering foil in the head of linear accelerator. The effect of electron scattering foil on energy spectra which is basic data of simulation for medical linear accelerator were presented. The calculated results would be used in design of medical accelerator head.

Purpose: To provide practical education, most universities should be equipped with medical appliances in need. As compensatory measures, Gimcheon College has produced in-house dummy linac and dummy accessories, we are going to report efficiency and its usage. Materials and Methods: Dummy linear accelerator (DLINAC-001) has the same mechanical functions as rotation of gantry and collimation in linear accelerator. In addition, to maximize practical education, we have produced and utilized in-house custom blocks, wedge filters, electron cones and head rests. Results: The in-house produced linear accelerator with the same mechanical functions as the linear accelerator, DLINAC-001 can be effectively used in practicing diverse medical instruments. Conclusion: We have produced dummy linear accelerators and dummy accessories and utilized them in practice classes, which can provide the students with clinical training in diverse fields. Consequently, the students exposed to the maximized educational effectiveness can be easily equipped with the practical competence required in real clinical fields.

When X-ray energy above 8 MV is used, photoneutrons are generated by the photonuclear reaction, which activates the components of linear accelerator (linac). Safely managing the radioactive material, when disposing linac or replacing components, is difficult, as the standards for the radioactive material management are not clear in Korea. We surveyed the management status of radioactive components occurred from medical linacs in Korea. And we also measured the activation of each part of the discarded Elekta linac using a survey meter and portable High Purity Germanium (HPGe) detector. We found that most medical institutions did not perform radiation measurements when disposing of radioactive components. The radioactive material was either stored within the institution or collected by the manufacturer. The surface dose rate measurements showed that the parts with high surface dose rates were target, primary collimator, and multileaf collimator (MLC). 60Co nuclide was detected in most parts, whereas for the target, 60Co and 184Re nuclides were detected. Results suggest that most institutions in Korea did not have the regulations for disposing radioactive waste from linac or the management procedures and standards were unclear. Further studies are underway to evaluate short-lived radionuclides and to lay the foundation for radioactive waste management from medical linacs.
This study was performed to prepare the verification film for localizing beam-target position with the Photon Knife radiosurgery system (PKRS) using linear accelerator(Mitsubishi, Model ML-15MDX). We developed a laser calibration system using a reticle of transparent lucite to detect Inlet and outlet beams. We verified fixation of the second collimator with film mounted on a holder in the shape of an octagon block 5cm apart from the isocenter. The film was exposed to photon beams of linear accelerator at an interval of 45 degrees during the gantry movement. There were no shifts in the beam of the second collimator during gantry movement. We used a position marker which is designed a head-shaped small lead block and a 10 mm in diameter of steel bead in the plastic tube. The position marker helped to verify the beam directions with patient position in multi-arc and trans-multi-arc of PKRS The verification of beam alignments showed an average 0.8$\pm$0.26 mm discrepancy in LINAC-gram images of PKRS. In our study, the couch movement was $\pm$5 mm laterally, while it shook $\pm$ 2 mm toward the couch axis. The couch, however, was immediately returned to the initial site after shaking. Thus, we postulate that the beam-target position(s) should be verified with LINAC-gram in a stereotactic radiosurgery system to achieve the accuracy of beam-target alignment.

The facility for RAON superconducting heavy-ion accelerator at a beam power of up to 400 kW will be produced rare isotopes with two electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion sources. Highly charged ions generated by the ECR ion source will be injected to a superconducting LINAC to accelerate them up to 200 MeV/u. During the acceleration of the heavy ions, a good vacuum system is required to avoid beam loss due to interaction with residual gases. Therefore ultra-high vacuum (UHV) is required to (i) limit beam losses, (ii) keep the radiation induced within safe levels, and (iii) prevent contamination of superconducting cavities by residual gas. In this work, a RAON vacuum design for all the accelerator system will be presented along with Monte Carlo simulation of vacuum levels in order to validate the vacuum hardware configuration, which is needed to meet the baseline requirements.
The Rare Isotope Science Project (RISP) has been launched for developing a superconducting heavy-ion linear accelerator, which produces various rare isotopes for low energy nuclear science and applied sciences. This superconducting linac is designed to achieve a very high beam current (200Mev/u with 400 kW beam power) of heavy ions including Uranium. For the high current accelerator, the requirement of ultra high-vacuum level is considered as one of the of important factors. Vacuum calculations have been carried out to verify the vacuum system design satisfied the requirements. In this paper, an overview of RISP and vacuum calculation methods for several interesting sections of the superconducting linear accelerator.
A pulse transformer producing pulses with the peak power of 200-MW (400 kV 500 A at load side with $4.4{\mu}s$ flat-top) is required to drive the 80-MW pulsed klystron in the PLS linac. We have designed and manufactured the high power pulse transformer with 1 : 17 turn ratio. Its primary functions are to match the impedance of klystron tube to the modulators, and to provide step-up of the voltage. To obtain a fast rise time of the pulse voltage. Low leakage inductance and low distributed capacitance design is very important. In this paper, we discuss the equivalent circuit analysis of the pulse transformer, and present the full power performance test results of pulse transformer.
