  • Critical nitrogen concentration (Nc), which is defined as the minimum % N in shoots required to maintain the maximum growth rate of top dry weight (W) at any time, was determined for rice plant. Using two rice varietal groups, japonica varieties and an indica $\times$ japonica "Dasanbyeo", 18 data points fulfilling the statistical criteria for determining Nc were obtained through eight N-fertilization experiments over two years at Suwon (37$^{\circ}$16'N), Korea. Nc dilution curve for each variety was obtained by fitting the Nc-W relationship to power function. However, The critical nitrogen curves for the two variety groups were not different statistically. Thus, a Nc dilution curve was fitted for the Nc data points pooled over the two variety groups and proposed in rice as: Nc=4.08, where W<1.73 t h $a^{-1}$ , Nc=5.197 $W^{0.425}$3/ ($R^2$=0.964), where 1.73 t h $a^{-1}$ <W<12 t h $a^{-l}$. The Nc for W<1.73 t h $a^{-l}$ were estimated as a constant value of 4.08%, the mean value of the maximum N concentration for N-limiting condition and the minimum N concentration for N non-limiting condition. The model for Nc is applicable to diagnosing the nitrogen nutrition status during the rice growth period from emergence to heading stage. The Nc curve well discriminated the 144 data points between the N limiting and the N non-limiting groups regardless of varieties, cultural methods, and years.-limiting groups regardless of varieties, cultural methods, and years.

  • Analyzing patterns in data points embedded in linear and non-linear feature spaces is considered as one of the common research problems among different research areas, for example: data mining, machine learning, pattern recognition, and multivariate analysis. In this paper, data points are heterogeneous sets of biosequences (composite data points). A composite data point is a set of ordinary data points (e.g., set of feature vectors). We theoretically extend the derivation of the largest generalized eigenvalue-based distance metric Dij1) in any linear and non-linear feature spaces. We prove that Dij1) is a metric under any linear and non-linear feature transformation function. We show the sufficiency and efficiency of using the decision rule $\bar{{\delta}}_{{\Xi}i}$(i.e., mean of Dij1)) in classification of heterogeneous sets of biosequences compared with the decision rules min𝚵iand median𝚵i. We analyze the impact of linear and non-linear transformation functions on classifying/clustering collections of heterogeneous sets of biosequences. The impact of the length of a sequence in a heterogeneous sequence-set generated by simulation on the classification and clustering results in linear and non-linear feature spaces is empirically shown in this paper. We propose a new concept: the limiting dispersion map of the existing clusters in heterogeneous sets of biosequences embedded in linear and nonlinear feature spaces, which is based on the limiting distribution of nucleotide compositions estimated from real data sets. Finally, the empirical conclusions and the scientific evidences are deduced from the experiments to support the theoretical side stated in this paper.

  • In 2013, August and September(early) as summer and October and November as Fall the probe of eutrophication has been done at 22 sampling points from the entrance of Danghang Bay (Jinhae Bay) to Geosan reservoir. In Danghang Bay, total chlorophyll(TChl) concentration of summer was 3.7 times higher than that of fall, and sampling points closer to the center showed 1.8 times higher concentrations than sampling points near the fringe where fresh water encountered. Eutrophication Index(EI) exceeded 1 at all sampling points in Danghang Bay during summer and fall, and if other conditions for algae growth met there was a possibility red tide to bloom at any place. There was a tendency of EI to gradually increase moving up from the entrance of bay to the inner side during summer and fall. Especially there was a sudden increase by 2.3 times higher at sampling points of 13~22 (planned region as Madong reservoir) than at other points during fall. Nitrogen was a limiting nutrient for growth of algae during summer and fall in Danghang Bay, but phosphorus was a limiting nutrient during summer rainy season. During summer and fall, multiple linear regression analysis between EI and COD, DIN, and DIP showed a significant positive relationship and that DIP was the most effective variable. Whereas multiple linear regression analysis between TChl and COD, DIN, DIP, and DSi showed a significant positive relationship and that DIP was also the most effective variable during summer. There was no significant correlation between TChl and the other parameters during fall.

  • For the purpose of designing and applying optimum surge protection, one of the essential points is to take into account the energy coordination between cascaded surge protective devices(SPDs) and it is important to obtain an acceptable sharing of the energy stress between two cascaded SPDs. In this paper, in case of two voltage-limiting SPDs connected in parallel, the amount of splitting impulse current and energy that flow through each SPDs is investigated as a function of the protective distance. As a result, the energetic coordination between cascaded SPDs is strongly dependent on the voltage protection level of SPDs and the protective distance. It was confirmed that the sharing of the energy between two cascaded SPDs and the limited voltage levels are appropriate when the voltage protection levels of both upstream and downstream SPDs are the same.

  • We consider a G/M/1 vacation model where the vacation time has k-stages generalized Erlang distribution. By using the methods of the shift operator and supplementary variable, we explicitly obtain the limiting probabilities of the queue length at arrival time points and arbitrary time points simultaneously. Operational calculus technique is used for solving non-homogeneous difference equations.

  • The optical limiter is an optical component which reduces laser beam intensity for the protection of eyes and light sensors. Carbon nanotube is now known as a highly efficient optical limiting material. Optical limiting effect of the multi-walled carbon nanotube suspensions, in several kinds of solvents such as distilled water, chloroform, ethanol and ethylene glycol, were measured in the range from room temperature to near to the boiling points of the solvents. The pulsed Nd:YAG laser whose wavelength is 1064 nm and pulse duration is 6 ns was used as a light source. The experimental result shows that the limiting efficiency was reduced as the temperature increased, and the suspension which has lower boiling point, viscosity and surface tension has highest efficiency.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the applicability of the causal maps for estimating creativity. This study assumes that fluency, flexibility, originality and elaboration are elements of creativity; and there are common characteristics between systems and creative thinking. For this study, 30 students from the 5th grade create causal maps which are consisted of the contents of 'the water cycle in the earth'. The causal maps are analyzed and evaluated by focusing on the characteristics of creativity. In way of the marking causal maps based on creativity, each word is scored as 1 point on the basis of 30 points for fluency. Each word which is linked more than one word is scored 3 points for flexibility, but the maximum points are limited as 35 points. In originality, if it is approved each word is worthy as well as originality, it is scored as 10 points on the basis of 40 points. Lastly, each number of cycle loops is scored as 15 points for elaboration, and the maximum scores are limited as 45 points. As is stated above, the limiting of the maximum scores are designed based on corresponded to 10% students of participators. In the result of this study, the students' scores of evaluating creativity applied causal maps show similar patterns from relative point of view to the other results which were evaluated the creativity by credible organ. Consequently, it is recognized that the causal maps have the possibility of being able to estimate quantitatively the creativity.

  • Uneven ink transfer of a print can be traced to several causes such as an incomplete contact between the paper surface and ink film, a coarse pattern of a continuous ink film after transfer, uneven absorption, etc. Uneven ink transfer was studied in this points by the Tollenaar. Uneven distributions of printed density are reflected in low ${\ulcorner}m{\lrcorner}$ values of the print. Tollenaar's smoothness coefficient ${\ulcorner}m{\lrcorner}$ value was important factor that deciding printed quality which was easily obtain by densitometry. Limiting print density $D_{\infty}$ that obtained Tollenaar's formulation working as a influence factor at the printed quality. In this study, we obtained limiting print density $D_{\infty}$ and smoothness coefficient ${\ulcorner}m{\lrcorner}$ value of domestic newspapers and foreign newspapers. And we analyzed about properties of the newspaper. The result of this study, smoothness coefficient ${\ulcorner}m{\lrcorner}$ value and limiting print density $D_{\infty}$ showed the good results in the low porosity and low roughness newspaper. Datum which obtained by this study was used as printability factor for the quality control and improvement of domestic newspaper and wished to apply as a basic data for the domestic newspaper quality.

  • Long-term data analyses and bioassay experiments were conducted to assess limiting nutrients in Cheonsu Bay and Taean sea. First, long-term nutrient data (2004-2016) provided by the National Water Quality Monitoring Network were used to assess potential limiting nutrients. Analysis of the long-term data showed that the dissolved inorganic nitrogen/dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIN/DIP) ratio was mostly below 16, with N limitation being dominant. A subsequent analysis using the concentration ratios of N, P, and Si showed that N limitation was dominant during summer and autumn but that Si limitation occasionally occurred during winter and spring in relatively limited areas. However, the dominant limiting nutrient was not determined. The nutrient analysis of the field water collected during the bioassay experiment showed that DIN/DIP revealed P limitation at all stations in March and May, whereas N limitation was dominant in July and October. In the analysis using the concentration ratios of N, P, and Si, P and Si limitation appeared in March and May, but there were points with no dominant limiting nutrient. However, N limitation was dominant in July and October. In the bioassay experiment for assessment of the actual limiting nutrient, the results showed no specific limiting nutrient in March, whereas NH4+ and NO3- showed responses in May, July, and October, which confirmed that N was a substantial limiting nutrient directly involved in phytoplankton growth during this period.

  • This study was carried out to analyze characteristics of water quality and correlation among water quality parameters in Idong reservoir used for agricultural water. The pH and concentrations of DO, SS, BOD, COD, TP, Chl-a in Idong reservoir almost met the water quality standards for agricultural water, but TN concentration exceeded the water quality standards for agricultural water. All of water quality items had no significant difference between horizontal points at 95% confidence level and the Idong reservoir was possible to be treated as the single water body. As NIP ratio of the Idong reservoir is 52, TP is a limiting nutrient salt. As TN exceeds the water quality standards, it is required to preserve TP below current state to prevent water bloom by eutrophication. Therefore, reduction of phosphorus from the watershed is necessary for controlling the eutrophication of Idong reservoir.
