  • This paper presents the effect of varying boundary conditions such as ground subsidence on failure prediction of buried pipelines. The first order Taylor series expansion of the limit state function is used in order to estimate the probability of failure associated with three cases of ground subsidence. We estimate the distribution of stresses imposed on the buried pipelines by varying boundary conditions and calculate the probability of pipelines with von-Mises failure criterion. The effects of random variables such as pipe diameter, internal pressure, temperature, settlement width, load for unit length of pipelines, material yield stress and thickness of pipeline on the failure probability of the buried pipelines are also systematically studied by using a failure probability model for the pipeline crossing a ground subsidence region.

  • Strength evaluation was carried out for the cylinder liner of a low-speed marine engine. Calculation of temperature distribution, nonlinear structural analysis, material test, and fatigue strength evaluation are briefly introduced in this paper. Strengths of five liner models are compared, and the effect of materials experiencing different heat treatment is evaluated. Structural analysis including boundary and material non-linearities was performed for axisymmetric liner models. High cycle (fatigue limit) and low cycle (fatigue life) fatigue analyses are carried out. As results, localized high stress was occurred next to the mount line. Maximum stresses are varied significantly with respect to different liner models and different materials.

  • We consider a particle walking on the nonnegative integers and each unit of time it makes, given it is at site k, either a jump of size m distance units to the right with probability $p_{k}$ or it goes back (falls down) to its starting point 0, a retaining barrier, with probability $v_{k}\;=\;1\;-\;p_{k}$. This is a Markov chain on the integers $mZ^{+}$. We show that if $v_{k}$ has a nonzero limit, then the Markov chain is positive recurrent. However, if $v_{k}$ speeds to 0, then we may get transient Markov chain. A critical speeding rate to zero is identified to get transience, null recurrence, and positive recurrence. Another type of random walk on $Z^{+}$ is considered in which a particle moves m distance units to the right or 1 distance unit to left with probabilities $p_{k}\;and\;q_{k}\;=\;1\;-\;p_{k}$, respectively. A necessary condition to having a stationary distribution and positive recurrence is obtained.

  • In this study, the function of a hydraulic brake system with a vacuum booster is systematically analyzed according to the mutual relations which follow : - the brake pedal force vs. booster cylinder input force - the booster output force vs. master cylinder input force - the hydraulic line pressure vs. braking deceleration. A computer program is developed based on the theory which is able to predict and analyze the pedal force characteristics at the beginning of the initial stage of brake system design. Analytical results show good agreement with the experimental vehicle test.

  • The temperature distribution inside a zigzag slab laser glass was measured using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The temperature difference between the center and the surface of the slab caused the fracture of the slab glass. Two laser glasses were fractured at a temperature difference ${\Delta}T_0$of TEX>$110^{\circ}C$, $62^{\circ}C$ respectively. For the design of high-average power glass laser, it is recommended that the limit of the temperature difference ${\Delta}T_0$ inside the slab glass should be smaller than $50^{\circ}C$ for safe operation.ration.

  • In this paper, finite element stamping analysis was carried out for the front lower arm to examine the applicability of solid element with damage theory to predict shear fracture phenomena induced by sheared edge as well as deformation mechanisms. Mechanical properties related to deformation and damage theory were determined from tensile test. Shear fracture was predicted by normalized Cockcroft-Latham model with initial imposition of the damage value along the sheared edge. Simulation results illustrated that the analysis with solid element and damage theory predicted edge profile, strain distribution, and forming load more accurately than the analysis with shell element. Simulation with solid element can also predict the shear fracture more exactly comparing to analysis with shell element and forming limit curve.

  • We studied the effects on the ignitability of mixture, the combustion duration, and the maximum combustion pressure, of various initial combustion factors such as temperature, pressure, and each equivalence ratio in order to identify the combustion characteristics of lean mixture and improve ignitability through the proper control of the ignition energy. It is concluded that there is an optimum turbulent intensity that enables the combustion to have the best ignitability and the shortest duration under each equivalent ratio, and the combustion duration is only dependent upon the distribution and magnitude of discharge energy within the limit of inflammability.

  • A probability-based durability design which minimizes the uncertainties on durability parameters of concrete is proposed for reinforced concrete structures subjected to chloride attack. The uncertainties of various factors such as water-cement ratio, curing temperature, age of concrete and the variation of these factors which affect chloride ion diffusion are considered. For the durability design, a probability-distribution function for each factor is obtained and a program which combines Fick's 2nd law and Monte Carlo simulation is developed. The durability design method proposed in this study considers probability of durability limit and probability of the concentration of chloride ion, so that the probability-based deterioration prediction is possible.

  • An economic process monitoring procedure is presented using a surrogate variable for the case where performance variable is dichotomous. Every item is inspected with a surrogate variable and determined whether it should be accepted or rejected. When an item is rejected, the previous number of consecutively accepted items is compared with a predetermined number r to decide whether there is a shift in fraction nonconforming or not. The conditional distribution of the surrogate variable given the performance variable is assumed to be normal. A cost model is constructed which includes costs of inspection, misclassification, illegal signal, undetected out-of-control state, and correction. Methods of finding the optimum number r and screening limit are provided. Numerical studies on the effects of cost coefficients are also performed.

  • In this study, micro square heaters having dimensions of $65{\times}65{\mu}m^2$and $100{\times}100{\mu}m^2$ were fabricated and bubble nucleation experiments on the heaters were performed. Bubble nucleation temperature was also measured using a bridge circuit and the photographs of bubble nucleation and subsequent growth were taken by a camera with a flash unit. Measured bubble nucleation temperatures were found to be closer to the superheat limit of working fluid (FC-72). Also quasi-1D analyses for the square heaters were performed. The quasi-1D analysis yielded proper temperature distribution of the square heater at steady state, however failed to predict the temperature rise up to the steady state. Similar time dependent temperature can be obtained with proper value of thermal diffusivity. For the $100{\times}100{\mu}m^2$ square heater, nucleation of several bubbles was observed while only one bubble was observed to be nucleated on $65{\times}65{\mu}m^2$ heater.
