  • Thin films of the SiO2-TiO2-PDMS composite material have been prepared by the sol-gel dip coating method. Acid catalyzed solutions of tetraethoxy silane (TEOS) and polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) mixed with titanium isopropoxide Ti(OiPr) were used as precursors. The optical and structural properties of the organically modified 70SiO2-30TiO2 composite films have been investigated with Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), UV-Visible Spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and prism coupling technique. The films coated on the soda-lime-silicate glass exhibit 450-750 nm thickness, 1.56-1.68 refractive index and 88-94% transmittance depending on the experimental parameters such as amount of PDMS, thermal treatment and heating rate. The optical loss of prepared composite film was measured to be about 0.34 dB/cm.

  • This paper presents the effect of silica fume and nano silica, used individually and in combination with the set accelerator and/or hydrated lime, on the properties of class F high volume ultra fine fly ash (HV-UFFA) cement composites, replacing 80 % of cement (OPC). Compressive strength test along with thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy were undertaken to study the effect of various elements on the physico-chemical behaviour of the blended composites. The results show that silica fume when used in combination with the set accelerator and hydrated lime in HV-UFFA cement mortar, improves its 7 and 28 day strength by 273 and 413 %, respectively, compared to the binary blended cement fly ash mortar. On the contrary, when nano silica is used in combination with set accelerator and hydrated lime in HV-UFFA cement mortar, the disjoining pressure in conjunction with the self-desiccation effect induces high early age micro cracking, resulting in hindering the development of compressive strength. However, when nano silica is used without the additives, it improves the 7 and 28 day strengths of HV-UFFA cement mortar by 918 and 567 %, respectively and the compressive strengths are comparable to that of OPC.

  • To investigate the reinforcing effect of subsurface layers of marine dredged clay(DMC) mixed with the micro-fiber(MF), a series of laboratory tests were performed on the DMC specimens with and without MF through uniaxial and triaxial compression tests. For the test programme, the elapsed time after dredging of marine clay, mixing rate and length of MF, and curing time of the composite were chosen as the important factors affecting the strength behaviour. The strength of the DMC mixed with MF and waste lime(WL) used for the admixture was found to be enhanced with the increasing content and length of MF, and with decreasing water content of DMC. MF and WL were applied as materials for trafficability improvement of the very soft reclaimed ground by DMC.

  • For the production of high strength constructional glass reinforced plastics and various composite materials continuous glass fibers of high strength and increased modulus of elasticity are used. As is known, the glasses with highest strength were obtained in magnesia alumosilicate and magnesia lime-alumosilicate systems when introducing oxides of titanium and zirconium, boric anhydride, etc. in some cases. The experimental investigations have shown that some glass compositions are characterized by the ratio viscosity/crystallization which is favourable for glass fiber drawing process that permits the attainment of high strength level at the conditions of high temperature glass melting and formation.

  • In this study, the effects of sulphuric acid on the mechanical performance and the durability of Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) specimens were investigated. The carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) and basalt fiber reinforced polymer (BFRP) fabrics were used to evaluate the performances of the confined and unconfined ECC specimens under static and cyclic loading in the acidic environment. In addition, the use of CFRP and BFRP fabrics as a rehabilitation technique was also studied for the specimens exposed to the sulphuric acid environment. The polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber with a fraction of 2% was used in the research. Two different PVA-ECC concretes were produced using low lime fly ash (LCFA) and high lime fly ash (HCFA) with the fly ash-to-OPC ratio of 1.2. Unwrapped PVA-ECC specimens were also produced as a reference concrete and all concrete specimens were continuously immersed in 5% sulphuric acid solution ($H_2SO_4$). The mechanical performance and the durability of specimens were evaluated by means of the visual inspection, weight change, static and cyclic loading, and failure mode. In addition, microscopic changes of the PVA-ECC specimens due to sulphuric acid attack were also assessed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to understand the macroscale behavior of the specimens. Results indicated that PVA-ECC specimens produced with low lime fly ash (LCFA) showed superior performance than the specimens produced with high lime fly ash (HCFA) in the acidic environment. In addition, confinement of ECC specimens with BFRP and CFRP fabrics significantly improved compressive strength, ductility, and durability of the specimens. PVA-ECC specimens wrapped with carbon FRP fabric showed better mechanical performance and durability properties than the specimens wrapped with basalt FRP fabric. Both FRP materials can be used as a rehabilitation material in the acidic environment.

  • Fiber orientation effects on the impact surface fracture of the glass plates coated with the glass fiber/epoxy lamina layer were investigated using a small-diameter steel-ball impact experiment. Four kinds of materials were used: soda-lime glass plates, unidirectional glass fiber/epoxy layer(one ply, two plies)-coated, crossed glass tiber/epoxy layer (two plies)-coated glass plates. The maximum stress and absorbed fracture energy were measured on the back surface of glass plates during the impact. With increasing impact velocity, various surface cracks such as ring, cone, radial and lateral cracks appeared near the impacted site of glass plates. Cracks in the plate drastically diminished by glass fiber coating. The tiber orientation guided the directions of delamination and plastic deformation zones between the tiber layer and the glass plate. Impact surface-fracture indices expressed in terms of the maximum stress and absorbed energy could be used as an effective evaluation parameter of the surface resistance.

  • A small diameter steel-ball impact experiment was performed to study the impact resistance of the surface of glass plates bonded with glass fabric/epoxy lamina. Five kinds of materials were used in this study: soda-lime glass plates, glass/epoxy lamina(one layer)-bonded and unbonded glass plates, glass/epoxy lamina(three layers)-bonded and unbonded glass plates. The range of impact velocity was 40 120m/s. The maximum stress and absorbed fracture energy were measured on the back surface of glass plates. With increasing impact velocity, various types of surface cracks such as ring, cone, radial and lateral cracks took place in the interior near the impacted site of glass plates. The cracks drastically decreased with glass/epoxy lamina coating. The surface fracture behavior could be evaluated using the maximum stress and the absorbed fracture energy.

  • ZTA tubes were prepared by centrifugal casting and sintered at $1600^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs. The ZTA tubes were machined into specimens of $3{\times}4{\times}40$ mm. Molten Soda lime glass (SLG) was penetrated into the surface of ZTA at an optimized condition of $1500^{\circ}C$ for the holding time of 5 h and furnace cooled. The extra glass on the surface was removed using a resin bonded diamond wheel. The glass penetrated samples were tested for their flexural strength using four point bend test. Vickers Indentation cracks were made on the glass penetrated surface at different loads of 9.8 N, 49 N, 98 N and 196 N. The residual compression on the surface enhanced the flexural strength and crack arrest behaviour remarkably. This was attributed to the thermoelastic mismatch between the glass and ZTA matrix during cooling.

  • An experimental study has been carried out to investigate the reinforcing effect of marine dredging clay(MDC) mixed with the Micro-Fiber(MF). A series of laboratory tests was performed using specimens of MDC alone and MDC with MF by means of uniaxial and triaxial compression test. In the test programme, three stages of water content of MDC were chosen according to the elapsed time after dredging, and content and length of MF were considered as important factors for reinforcing effect. And the developed strength due to curing was measured both in MDC and composite. The enhancement of strength of composite was found to be increased with the increasing content and length of MF, and curing time, and with decreasing water content of MDC. An additional study has been made for in-situ trafficability on the soft reclaimed ground by MDC due to high water content. It was found that the waste lime was to be applicable for this purpose to get a reinforcing effect of MDC. A further study would lead to the better understanding of the reinforcing mechanism of the composite.
