There are at least three effects of the non-thermal particle bombardment on the solar atmosphere: (1) non-thermal ionization and excitation; (2) proton-hydrogen charge exchange; (3) impact line polarization. Due to the non-thermal ionization and excitation effects of electron bombardments in flares, H$\alpha$ line is widely broadened and shows a strong central reversal. Significant enhancements at the line wings of Ly$\alpha$ and Ly$\beta$ are also predicted. In the case of proton bombardment, less strong broadening and no large central reversal are expected. However, due to proton-hydrogen charge exchange, the enhancements at the red wings of Ly$\alpha$ and especially of Ly$\beta$ lines at the early impulsive phase of flares are significant. Electron beam can also in some cases generates visible and UV continuum emission in white-light flares. However, at the onset phase, a negative 'black' flare may appear in several seconds, due to the increase of the $H^-$ opacity. The impact polarization of atomic lines can provide complementary information on the energetic particles, the energy transport and deposit in the solar chromosphere. New results of spectropolarimetric analysis for the major flare on July 23, 2002 are also given in the paper.
Erasable polarization holographic grating was recorded with two-wave mixing in PCN which was side-chain liquid crystalline polymalonic esters containing two symmetrical 4-cyanoazobenzene as photoresponsive groups. The diffraction efficiency of recorded grating was measured and the characteristics of recording, decay in a dark room and erasing by circularly polarized light were investigated. As the results, birefringence, $\Delta$n of PCN was measured $6.5{\times}10^{-2}$, which was 0~100 times higher than those of crystals such as Fe:$LiNbO_3$, Ce:$BaTiO_3$ crystals. Dark decay rates was $4.3{\times}10^{-5}$ %/hour, which showed the possibility of application as data storage media.
We derive a set of formuale which show one-to-one correspondence between the the unitary Jones matrices of transparent anisotropic media and the rotational transformations on the Poincare sphere. By using the formuale one can determine the vectorial representation of the rotational transformation on the Poincare sphere which specifies the direction of the axis and the angle of the rotation in terms of the three parameters specific to the corresponding unitary Jones matrix, and conversely the the three parameters of the uniatry Jones matrix in terms of the vectorial representation of the corresponding rotational transformation on the Poincare sphere. To understand the polarization transmission characteristics of an optical system consisting of transparent linear anisotropic media, start with the Jones calculus to get the unitary Jones matrix for the whole system and then convert it to a rotational transformation on the Poincare sphere, from which we can intuitively understand the effect of the optical system on the polarization state of the light passing through the system.
Temperature dependences of the dielectric constant K(T), remanent polarization $P_{r}$, (T), effective birefringence overbar .DELTA.n(T), transmitted light intensity and quadratic electro optic coefficient R(T) of the two-stage sintered xBa(L $a_{1}$2/N $b_{1}$2/) $O_{3}$-(1-x)Pb(Z $r_{y}$$Ti_{1-y}$) $O_{3}$(x=0.085, 0.09, 0.40.leq.y.leq.0.70) ceramics were investigated. Increasing the PbZr $O_{3}$ contents, the crystal structure of a specimen was changed from a tetragonal phase to a rhombohedral and cubic phase, and the phase transition was showed a diffuse phase transition(DPT) characteristics. In the compositions which located on the PE-FE phase boundary, the discrepancy was observed between the Curie temperature and temperature which a microscopic polarization and effective birefringence were disappeared.red.d.
Reflective polarizers can be used as luminance enhancement films for LCD backlights via the polarization recycling process. The optical performances of a wire grid polarizer (WGP) as a reflective polarizer adopted in edge-lit backlights were investigated by luminance evaluation and a time-domain simulation technique. The results were compared to those of a commercial dielectric multilayer film. The luminance gain factor of WGP was smaller than that of the multilayer film by 18%. This was attributed to a much larger internal loss of WGP due to light absorption by metal wires. The internal losses of both reflective polarizers and the polarization conversion efficiency of the backlight were obtained numerically based on a phenomenological model. The optical performances of WGP were optimized by using a time-domain simulation technique. The luminance gain increased and was found to become comparable to, but slightly less than the case of the dielectric multilayer film with decreasing line width.

Group III-nitride semiconductors have been widely studied as the materials for growth of light emitting devices. Currently, GaN devices are predominantly grown in the (0001) c-plane orientation. However, in case of using polar substrate, an important physical problem of nitride semiconductors with the wurtzite crystal structure is their spontaneous electrical polarization. An alternative method of reducing polarization effects is to grow on non-polar planes or semi-polar planes. However, non-polar and semipolar GaN grown onto r-plane and m-plane sapphire, respectively, basically have numerous defects density compared with c-plane GaN. The purpose of our work is to reduce these defects in non-polar and semi-polar GaN and to fabricate high efficiency LED on non/semi-polar substrate. Non-polar and semi-polar GaN layers were grown onto patterned sapphire substrates (PSS) and nano-porous GaN/sapphire substrates, respectively. Using PSS with the hemispherical patterns, we could achieve high luminous intensity. In case of semi-polar GaN, photo-enhanced electrochemical etching (PEC) was applied to make porous GaN substrates, and semi-polar GaN was grown onto nano-porous substrates. Our results showed the improvement of device characteristics as well as micro-structural and optical properties of non-polar and semi-polar GaN. Patterning and nano-porous etching technologies will be promising for the fabrication of high efficiency non-polar and semi-polar InGaN LED on sapphire substrate.
Polarization is a rich source of information on the physical properties of astronomical objects. In particular, scattered sunlight by optically thin media (e.g., cometary comae) shows linear polarization of light, which highly depends on the phase angle (an angle between the Sun-Comet-Earth), wavelengths, and physical properties of cometary dust particles such as size, composition, and structures. Here, we present a study of polarimetric properties of non-periodic comet C/2013 US10 (Catalina) in optical and near-infrared wavelength regions obtained from imaging, spectroscopy, and polarimetric observations taken on UT 2015 December 17 - 19 welcoming its (probably) first close approach to the Earth. In this presentation, we want to introduce our progress since the last Korean Astronomical Society meeting (at BEXCO, Busan, 2016 April 14 - 15) especially in terms of spatial variations of degree of linear polarization (DOLP) and its possible scenarios to explain the correlations with other observational results. In particular, we found that there is strong anti-correlation between the gas/dust flux ratio and DOLP at the cometocentric distance of $(2-5){\times}104 km$. Besides, within 10 arcseconds in radii (corresponding to inner coma region of 104 km from the center), the inverse relationship of these two parameters does not hold anymore. We conjecture that the rapid outward increase of DOLP can be supported by either the sublimation/evaporation of icy volatiles, disaggregation of cometary dust particles ejected from the nucleus, and/or difference of dominant dust particle sizes. From our results, we can conclude that comet C/2013 US10 (Catalina) corroborates rather indefinite traditional classification of poalrimetric classes of comets, and provides good opportunity to study less processed material which probably cherishes its memory at the formation epoch of the Solar System.

We have studied the anodic oxidation of silicon in the anisotropic etchant of EPW(Ethylenediamine, Pyrocatechol and Water) solution using the cyclic polarization technique. The samples have been characterized by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). The results of cyclic polarization experiments show that the anodic oxides formed on p- and n-type silicon wafers break down at the same potential while breakdown does not occur up to open circuit potential in the case of $p^+$-Si. Strong etch-resistance of $p^+$-XPS. SIMS depth profiles suggest that the critical concentration of boron for etch-stop to occur appears to be much higher than what is widely believed.
Polarimetric study of light scattering from cometary dust particles can provide us opportunity to decipher their characteristics, such as sizes, structures, compositions of dust grains, etc. Herein, we present the results of our polarimetric study of long-period comet, C/2013 US10 (Catalina), in optical and near-infrared wavelengths which appeared at large phase angle (52.7 degrees) around the mid-December, 2015. We performed polarimetric and spectroscopic observations with HONIR, attached to the 1.5-m telescope at Higashi-Hiroshima Observatory, on UT 2015 December 17-18 and also obtained optical imaging data sets by the Ishigakijima Astronomical Observatory (IAO) and Okayama Astrophysical Observatory (OAO) taken between 2014-2015. By measuring the intensities of gas emission lines with respect to dust continuum and considering transmittance of each filter, we estimated that the percentages of gas contamination are approximately 10 percents in $R_C$-band and 3 percents in $I_C$-band. With these results, we derive the degree of linear polarization scattered solely from dust components in the coma. At this presentation, we will compare the phase-angle dependence of the degree of linear polarization with those of previous archive data in a wide coverage of wavelengths from $R_C$-band to $K_S$-band. Finally, we are supposed to discuss the spatial variations in polarization within the coma.

In this study, the gain characteristics of the strained structures for SOA were calculated numerically and the optimized strained quantum well for the polarization-insensitive SOA was obtained. The structures used in this calculation were consisted of one, two, and three GaAs Delta layers respectively in the GaInAs(160 $\AA$) well. Moreover the third one was calculated by changing from one mono-layer to three mono-layers in the thichless of GaAs delta layers. This structure enhances the TM mode gain coefficient with good efficiency because the light-hole band is lifted up whereas the heavy-hole band is lowered down. Additionally, The structure of the 3 GaAs delta layers(1 mono layer thickness) shows 3dB gain bandwidth of 85nm in 1.55um wavelength system. This study is expected to be used in making a wide band and polarization-independent semiconductor optical amplifier practically.
