Development of Neuropsychological Model for Spatial Ability and Application to Light & Shadow Problem Solving Process (공간능력에 대한 신경과학적 모델 개발 및 빛과 그림자 문제 해결 과정에의 적용)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a neuropsychological model for the spatial ability factor and to divide the brain active area involved in the light & shadow problem solving process into the domain-general ability and the domain-specific ability based on the neuropsychological model. Twenty-four male college students participated in the study to measure the synchronized eye movement and electroencephalograms (EEG) while they performed the spatial ability test and the light & shadow tasks. Neuropsychological model for the spatial ability factor and light & shadow problem solving process was developed by integrating the measurements of the participants' eye movements, brain activity areas, and the interview findings regarding their thoughts and strategies. The results of this study are as follows; first, the spatial visualization and mental rotation factors mainly required activation of the parietal lobe, and the spatial orientation factor required activation of the frontal lobe. Second, in the light & shadow problem solving process, participants use both their spatial ability as a domain-general thought, and the application of scientific principles as a domain-specific thought. The brain activity patterns resulting from a participants' inferring the shadow by parallel light source and inferring the shadow when the direction of the light changed were similar to the neuropsychological model for the spatial visualization factor. The brain activity pattern from inferring an object from its shadow by light from multiple directions was similar to the neuropsychological model for the spatial orientation factor. The brain activity pattern from inferring a shadow with a point source of light was similar to the neuropsychological model for the spatial visualization factor. In addition, when solving the light & shadow tasks, the brain's middle temporal gyrus, precentral gyrus, inferior frontal gyrus, middle frontal gyrus were additionally activated, which are responsible for deductive reasoning, working memory, and planning for action.

Design and Implementation of Image Detection System Using Vertical Histogram-Based Shadow Removal Algorithm (수직 히스토그램 기반 그림자 제거 알고리즘을 이용한 영상 감지 시스템 설계 및 구현)

  • For the shadow removal technology that is the base technology of the image detection system, real-time image processing has a problem that the processing speed is reduced due to the calculation complexity and it is also sensitive to illumination or light because shadows are removed only by the difference in brightness. Therefore, in this paper, we improved real-time performance by reducing the calculation complexity through the removal of the weighting part in order to solve the problem of the conventional system. In addition, we designed and evaluated an image detection system based on a shadow removal algorithm that could improve the shadow recognition rate using a vertical histogram. The evaluation results confirmed that the average speed increased by approximately 5.6ms and the detection rate improved by approximately 5.5%p compared to the conventional image detection system.

Adversarial Shade Generation and Training Text Recognition Algorithm that is Robust to Text in Brightness (밝기 변화에 강인한 적대적 음영 생성 및 훈련 글자 인식 알고리즘)

  • The system for recognizing text in natural scenes has been applied in various industries. However, due to the change in brightness that occurs in nature such as light reflection and shadow, the text recognition performance significantly decreases. To solve this problem, we propose an adversarial shadow generation and training algorithm that is robust to shadow changes. The adversarial shadow generation and training algorithm divides the entire image into a total of 9 grids, and adjusts the brightness with 4 trainable parameters for each grid. Finally, training is conducted in a adversarial relationship between the text recognition model and the shaded image generator. As the training progresses, more and more difficult shaded grid combinations occur. When training with this curriculum-learning attitude, we not only showed a performance improvement of more than 3% in the ICDAR2015 public benchmark dataset, but also confirmed that the performance improved when applied to our's android application text recognition dataset.

  • An area light source in the three dimensional space shines past a scene polygon, to generate two types of shadow volumes for each scene polygon, i.e., one with partial occlusion and the other with the complete occlusion. These are called, penumbra and umbra, respectively. In this paper, consider the problem for computing the umbra of a convex polygon from convex quadric light sources such as circles, ellipses, spheres, ellipsoids and cylinders. First, we give characteristics of the boundary surfaces of the umbra and then propose an algorithm for generating the umbra using them.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the feasibility of using HDF as surface panels as well as core materials for flush door manufacturing. Several core compositions were developed and applied to manufacture door specimens. Core materials were tested under bending load, door manufacturing process was analysed to find better way of using HDF for door manufacturing, and door specimens were tested under bending, twisting and impact loads. From this study, it was concluded that HDF can be used to manufacture quality flush doors. And it was desirable to use light color HDF as surface panels because dark color HDF caused a problem in manufacturing process by shadow shown through finishing veneer. HDF doors were light, and showed good quality and higher resistance against bending twisting and impact loads.

  • In this paper, a method of determining the optimal threshold in image binarization for the marker recognition is suggested to resolve the problem that the performances of marker recognition are quite different according to the changes of indoor lighting. The suggested method determines the optimal threshold by considering the average brightness, the standard deviation and the maximum deviation of video image under the various indoor lighting circumstances, such as bright light, dim light, and shadow by unspecified obstacles. In particular, the recognition under the gradation lighting by shadow is improved by applying the weighted value that depends on the brightness of image. The suggested method is experimented to process $720{\times}480$ resolution video images under the various lighting environments, and it shows the fast and high performance, which is suitable for mobile indoor navigation.

A Study on the Actual Conditions of Living Room Lighting in Daegu and Gyeongbuk Districts (대구·경북 지역 거실 조명 실태조사)

  • This research study was conducted to determine the actual conditions of living room lighting in Daegu and Gyeongbuk districts. For this study, 112 households were surveyed. The results of this study are as follows: Firstly, fluorescent light was used as the general illumination of living rooms, and the ratio of not using local sources of illumination was high. Secondly, the standard illuminance was found to be 221. The illuminance was the value that satisfied the activities for togetherness and entertainment, but did not reach the illuminance necessary for other activities, such as reading, make-up, and sewing. In addition, the uniformity of brightness used as a measure of uniformity in examining the results was normal. Thirdly, both the brightness and the satisfaction of lighting in the living room space were indicated to be normal. In addition, in regard to housing lighting, 'stability', and 'brightness of lighting' were indicated as important considerations and 'brightness of lighting', 'shadow' and 'management of lighting' were indicated as problem areas.

  • In this paper, we propose a new optical thresold generator as a key-stream genrator for stream cipher systems. The random key-bit stream is generated by a digital generator that is composed of LFSRs and nonlinear ligics. Digital implementatin of a key-stream generator requires large memory to implement programmable tapping points. This memory problem may be overcome easily by using the proposed optical system which has the proberty of 2D parallel processing.To implement hte threshold generator optically, we use conventional twisted nematic type SLMs (LCDs). This proposed system is based on the shadow casting technique for the AND operation between taps and sregister stages. It is also based on the proposed PMRS method for modulo 2 addition. The proposed PMRS method uses the property of light's polarization on LCD and can be implemented optically using one LCD and some mirrors. One of the major advantages of the proosed system is that there is no limitation of the number of the progarmmable tapping points. Therefore, the proposed system can be applied for the 2D encryption system which processes large amounts of data such as 2D images. We verify the proposed system with some simulation.

  • We use adaptive method and determine threshold coefficient so that the algorithm could decide a suitable binarization threshold coefficient of the image to detecting a marker; therefore, we solve the light influence on the shadow area and dark region. In order to improve the speed for reducing computation we created Integral Image. The algorithm detects an outline of the image by using canny edge detection for getting damage or obscured markers as it receives the noise removed picture. The strength of the line of the outline is extracted by Hough transform and it extracts the candidate regions corresponding to the coordinates of the corners. Markers extracted using the equation of a straight edge to find the coordinates. By using the equation of straight the algorithm finds the coordinates the corners. of extracted markers. As a result, even if all corners are obscured, the algorithm can find all of them and this was proved through the experiment.

Detection Algorithm of Crossroad Traffic Accident Using the Sequence of Traffic Lights (신호등 주기를 이용한 교차로 교통사고감지 알고리즘)

  • This paper suggests the background image and the algorism of detecting an accident at crossroads by using the sequence of traffic light at crossroads, which is installed within the crossroads, in order to detect an accident within crossroads. A method of using the existing image contains a problem that the accident-detection ratio gets lower in a situation that noise occurs loudly given using new accident model, the confused situation, or sound source. This study used the accident detection by developing a filter of using the property of histogram in the sequence of traffic light at crossroads and the background image, in order to reduce misjudgment of an accident caused by external shadow, vehicle stoppage, vehicle headlight, and externally environmental influence. As a result of experimenting by acquiring 15 actual accident images in order to examine the performance of the suggested algorism, the accident was detected in all the 15 videos. Even as for a new accident model, the accident within crossroads could be detected.
