  • To investigate aerodynamic performance of high-lift devices, 2D design is the base of the success of high-lift system design for transport aircraft, which can shorten the periods of three-dimensional design and analysis. For the simulation coupled viscous and inviscous euler method (MSES) is used. In this parametric study, Gap and Overlap which can define position of flap is used as design variables and we investigale relation between angle of attack and flap position for lift enhancement.

  • The shape of a conventional full spade rudder has been modified to implement the Coanda effect and consequential changes in the flow characteristics are carefully examined to show the significant enhancement in the lift performance. A preliminary numerical study has been done to identify the optimum configuration of the modified rudder sections. For the purpose, chord wise locations of the jet slit and the radii of the trailing edge were varied in several ways and the changes in the lift characteristics have been observed at the various angles of attack, particularly focusing on the usefulness of the Coanda effect upon delaying the stall or increase in the circulation. Making the most use of the results so attained, full spade rudder of a VLCC has been reformed to realize the Coanda effect. A series of model experiments and numerical simulations are performed to confirm the effectiveness of the Coanda effect in improving the performance of the modified rudder. It is found that considerable enhancement in the lift performance of the rudder is plausible at any rudder angle if an optimum jet momentum is provided.

  • An active flow control technique using blowing and distributed suction on low Reynolds airfoil is investigated. Simultaneous blowing and distributed suction can recirculate the jet flow mass, and reduce the penalty to propulsion system due to avoiding dumping the jet mass flow. Energy is injected into main flow by blowing on the suction surface, and the low energy boundary flow mass is removed by distributed suction, thus the flow separation can be successfully suppressed. Aerodynamic lift to drag ratio is improved significantly using the flow control technique, and the energy consumption is quite low.

  • In order to verify the lift enhancement of the 2D hydrofoil with trailing edge rotor and check the ability of its practical use, experimental studies were conducted in the caviation tunnel using the test model with NACA0020 section. The three-component forces acting on the model could be measured by exclusively designed sting type multi-component load cell. The trailing edge of the model has been replaced with rotor which could be controlled by DC servo motor installed at the exterior of the tunnel. A typical effect of the trailing edge rotor has been introduced among the systematic experiments on various angular deviation of the model and the rotational velocity of the trailing edge rotor. It is appeared that the circulation control effect could be easily adjusted by selecting the rotational velocity of the trailing edge rotor and the lift force was augmented more than two times. Thus the proposed lifting device could be utilized as a novel high lifting device which has adjustability of lift force.

  • A rotating propeller of turboprop aircraft gives much effect on the aerodynamic characteristics of wing such as lift, moment and stall. Specially propeller effect on the wing surface is much more dominant when aircrafts are in landing or take-off conditions. In the present paper, three dimensional Navier-Stokes simulations for the interaction of propeller and wing were carried out for medium sized turboprop aircraft. For rotating propeller, unsteady sliding mesh method was used to simulate a relative motion between moving and static bodies. For the power effect analysis in landing and take off configurations, double slotted flap was also considered and the aerodynamic characteristics were investigated. It was shown that the propeller slipstream enhanced the lift slope including maximum lift by eliminating local flow separation region and this enhancement was more dominant with high lift device.

  • This research aims at establishing the application of canvas kite to the fishing gear through the analysis of the lift/drag tests of the kites have been performed in our previous finding. Now that several methodologies were designed to find the most effective triangular model as a buoyancy device applied to the fishing gear. Comparisons of drag/lift were made by installing the model in an installation frame instead of the prototype. Also, we have considered the application of canvas kite to the prototypic fishing gear by calculation using the result of this test. The results obtained from the above approaches are summarized as follows, where attack angle, lift coefficient, maximum lift coefficient and drag coefficient are denoted as $B,\;C_L,\;C_Lmax\;and\;C_D$ respectively. The camber showed a gradual increase with an increase of fluid velocity. There was a big discrepancy in B=20 unlike B=30. Even if the kite retreats along the fluid flow, there is little relationship with the velocity variation. Lifts calculated with the kites were bigger and drags were smaller than those of the calculations with the float only. The kite as the buoyancy device will be very useful when the appropriate applications and the stability are met.

  • When triple flames propagated in a diverging channel, the effects of fuel dilution on the lift-off characteristics of triple flames were investigated. A multi-slot burner was used to stabilize the lift-off flame especially at weak fuel concentration gradients. It was reported that there is a maximum propagation velocity at a critical concentration gradient in an open jet regardless of fuel dilution. The enhancement of a diffusion flame affected to increase the propagation velocity around critical concentration gradients. However, the influence of a confined channel on the structure of triple flames according to fuel dilution needs to be investigated compared with an open jet case. This study aimed to examine the effect of a confined channel on the structure and the propagation velocity of the triple flames according to fuel dilution. Lift-off height and propagation velocity of triple flames were investigated by employing three kinds of fuel compositions diluted by nitrogen (0%, 25%, 50% $N_2$), Fuel dilution reduced the propagation velocity of triple flame in a confined channel mainly due to the decrease of flame temperature in premixed branch. Despite the difference in fuel dilution, the propagation velocity has a maximum value at a specific fuel concentration gradient even though the critical concentration gradient increases with fuel dilution. And the critical concentration gradient in a confined channel is larger than that in an open jet due to enhancement of convective diffusion.

  • A flow visualization has been conducted to investigate unsteady flight characteristics of a model of dragonfly. The mechanism of lift generation by flapping wings is analyzed using smoke-wire and high speed camera. The experimental results of flow visualization show a discernible sequential dynamics that three mechanisms and high incidence angle of the wings are responsible for the lift generation. The leading edge vortex by the rapid acceleration of leading edge of the wing during initial stage of stroke causes a strong lift enhancement. Delayed stall during the stroke, fast supination and pronation of the wing near the end of each stroke are also responsible for the lift generation.

  • For a long times it has been believed that the Magnus effect of the rotating cylinder could be utilized for the lifting devices applicable to marine practices. It has been reported that the rotating cylinder installed on upper deck of commercial vessel could play a energy saving role however the idea might be applicable in a very rare case in ship building practices. In this study special high lift rudder system equipped with the trailing edge rotor has been suggested in correspondence with the increasing requirement of greater rudder force. Through the numerical simulation it is cleared that the trailing edge rotor could play a role in enhancement of circulation and refinement of boundary layer of the rudder system. At the same time it is found out that the lift force of the rudder system without rotation of trailing edge rotor could be doubled when the circumferential velocity of the trailing edge rotor is equal to twice of the inflow velocity.
