  • This paper presents galloping analysis of multiple-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) structural roofs with multiple orientations. Instead of using drag and lift coefficients and/or their combined coefficient in traditional galloping analysis for slender structures, this study uses wind pressure coefficients for wind force representation on each and every different orientation roof, facilitating the galloping analysis of multiple-orientation roof structures. In the study, influences of nonlinear aerodynamic forces are considered. An energy-based equivalent technique, together with the modal analysis, is used to solve the nonlinear MDOF vibration equations. The critical wind speed for galloping of roof structures is derived, which is then applied to galloping analysis of roofs of a stadium and a high-rise building in China. With the aid of various experimental results obtained in pertinent research, this study also shows that consideration of nonlinear aerodynamic forces in galloping analysis generally increases the critical wind speed, thus enhancing aerodynamic stability of structures.

  • In this paper, the flow past a rotary oscillating circular cylinder is simulated. The high-order and high-resolution numerical schemes with the characteristic boundary conditions are used for the compressible Navier-Stokes equation. The frequencies of rotating oscillation are $0.19\;{\leq}\;S_f\;{\leq}\;0.25$ for the maximum angular $\theta_{max}=10^{\circ}$ and $17^{\circ}$. The flow conditions are Mach number of 0.3 and Reynolds number of 1000. At Lock-on and Non-lock-on region which are defined by the relation between the vortex shedding frequency and the oscillating frequency, the drag and lift coefficient are analyzed.

  • We investigate two-dimensional laminar flow around rectangular cylinders placed in a uniform stream. Numerical simulations are performed, using finite volume method, in the ranges of $50{\leq}Re{\leq}150$ and $0.1{\leq}W/H{\leq}1.0$, where Re and W/H are the Reynolds number and the width-to-height ratio, respectively. The immersed boundary method is used to handle the rectangular cylinder in a rectangular grid system. Comparisons with the previous results show good agreement in Strouhal number, drag and lift coefficient. The present study reports the detailed information of flow structure at different width-to-height ratios in the ranges of $50{\leq}Re{\leq}150$.

  • The present paper focuses on the analysis of aero-acoustics characteristic by several boundary conditions. In this simulation, a high-order and high-resolution numerical schemes are used for the accurate computation of compressible flow with several boundary conditions including characteristic boundary conditions as well as extrapolation and zonal characteristic boundary condition. These boundary conditions are applied to the computation of two dimensional circular cylinder flows with Mach number of 0.3 and Reynolds number of 400. The computation results are validated with measurement datum and other computation results for the Strouhal frequency of vortex shedding, the mean drag coefficient and root-mean-square lift for the unsteady periodic flow regime. Secondary frequency is predicted by three kinds of boundary conditions characteristic.

  • This study performed numerical simulation to elucidate the characteristics of flow past a rectangular cylinder with various values of the aspect ratio(AR) of the cylinder. We calculated the flow field, force coefficients and Strouhal number of vortex shedding depending on the Reynolds number(Re) and the aspect ratio. The $AR{\approx}1$ is preferred for drag reduction, and 0.375$AR{\approx}0$ is recommended if suppression of the lift-coefficient fluctuation and the shedding frequency is desirable. Furthermore the criticality of the Hopf bifurcation is also reported for each AR.

  • A homogeneous flow field including more than 2000 spherical particles was directly simulated. Particles are settling by gravity with the Reynolds number ranging from 50 to 300, based on diameter and slip velocity. Particular attention was focused on the distribution of particles. The Reynolds-number dependence, influences of particle rotation and loading ratio, and the dynamics of particle clusters are discussed. In the higher Reynolds number case, the wake attraction causes particle clusters and the average drag coefficient decreases significantly. Non-rotating particles maintain cluster structure and rotating ones moves randomly in the horizontal direction. It is because of the difference in the direction of the lift force.

  • In preliminary design phase, the wing geometry of the civil aircraft was determined using the empirical equation and historical data. To make wing geometry more aerodynamically efficient, an aerodynamic shape optimization was conducted. For this purpose the parametric modeling, high fidelity CFD analysis and metamodel-based optimal design technique were adopted. The parametric modeling got the design process to achieve the improvement by generating the configuration outputs easily for the major design variables. The optimal design equations were formularized as the type of the multi-objective functions considering low/high speed and lift/drag coefficient. The optimal solution was explored with the help of the kriging metamodel and the desirability function, therefore the optimal wing planform was sought to be excellent at both low and high speed region. Additionally the optimal wing planform was validated that it was excellent not only at the specific AOA, but also all over the range of AOA.

  • The present paper focuses on the analysis of aero-acoustics characteristic by appling different four boundary conditions. The high-order and high-resolution numerical schemes are used for discrete accurate computation of compressible flow. The four boundary conditions include extrapolation, characteristic boundary condition, zonal characteristic boundary condition. These boundary conditions are applied to the computation of two dimensional circular cylinder flows with Mach number of 0.3 and Reynolds number of 400. The computation results are validated against measurement data and other computation results for the Strouhal frequency of vortex shedding, the mean drag coefficient and root-mean-square lift for the unsteady periodic flow regime. The characteristics of secondary frequency is predicted by three kinds of boundary conditions.

  • In the present paper, the effect of the location of stern planes on the flow entering the submarine propeller is studied numerically. These planes are mounted on three longitudinal positions on the submarine stern. The results are presented considering the flow field characteristics such as non-dimensional pressure coefficient, effective drag and lift forces on the stern plane, and the wake flow formed at the rear of the submarine where the propeller is located. In the present study, the submarine is studied at fully immersed condition without considering the free surface effects. The numerical results are verified with the experimental data. It is concluded that as the number of planes installed at the end of the stern section along the submarine model increases, the average velocity, width of the wake flow and its turbulence intensity formed at the end of the submarine enhance. This leads to a reduction in the non-uniformity of the inlet flow to the propulsion system.

  • Numerical simulations of flow over two spheres placed in a tandem arrangement are conducted to investigate the effect of the inter-sphere spacing on the flow characteristics. The Reynolds numbers considered are 100, 250, 300 and 425, corresponding to steady axisymmetric, steady planar-symmetric, unsteady planar-symmetric, and unsteady asymmetric flows, respectively, in the case of a single sphere. For small inter-sphere spacings, the flow past two spheres is more stable than that past a single sphere. For example, with the spacing of the sphere radius, the flow is steady axisymmetric up to Re=300. However, for relatively large spacings, the flow past two spheres becomes unstable and vortex shedding takes place even at Re=250. The drag coefficient of the rear sphere decreases significantly with decreasing inter-sphere spacing due to reduction of the stagnation pressure, thus being smaller than that of the front sphere. Also, the rear sphere shows large fluctuations of the lift force as compared to the front one in the case of unsteady flow.
