Cytotoxic anticancer chemotherapeutic agents generally produce severe side effects, while reducing host resistance to cancer and infections, especially through the destruction of lymphoid and bone marrow cells. In this study, we have investigated the effect of chitosan on cytotoxic activity against cancer cells and life span in mice. The direct cytotoxicity of chitosan or chitosan-combinated chemotherapeutic agents for tumor cells was observed. In addition, the effect of life span extention was counted on sarcoma 180 mice injected with chitosan-combinated mitomycin C. The effect of growth inhibion for cancer cells, K562 and Yac-1 was shown in the cytotoxicity test of chitosan or chitosan-combinated chemotherapeutic agents. Also, the effect of life span extension was observed on sarcoma 180 mice injected with chitosan-combinated mitomycin C. Our results suggest that life span extension in sarcom 180 mice exposed with chitosan-combinated chemotherapeutic agents showed the probability of its usefulness for cancer therapy if more research results were accumulated.
We investigated the leaf demography of a temperate woody liana, Akebia trifoliata, in a temperate forest in Japan, Akebia is semi-evergreen: some leaves are shed before winter, while others remain through the winter. Previous studies of semi-evergreen species found that variation in leaf life span was caused by variation in the timing of leaf emergence, Leaves that appeared just before winter over-wintered, while leaves appearing earlier were shed, However, it is unclear whether leaves of the same cohort (i.e., leaves that appear at the same time within a single site) show variation in life span under the effect of strong seasonality. To separate variation in life span among the leaves in each cohort from variation among cohorts, we propose a new method - the single leaf diagram, which shows the emergence and death of each leaf. Using single leaf diagrams, our study revealed that Akebia leaves within a cohort showed substantial variation in life span, with some over-wintering and some not. In addition, leaves on small ramets in the understory showed great variation in life span, while leaves on large ramets, which typically reach higher positions in the forest canopy, have shorter lives, As a result, small ramets were semi-evergreen, whereas large ramets were deciduous, The longer lives of leaves on small ramets can be interpreted as a shade-adaptive strategy in understory plants.
Viscum album coloratum (Korean mistletoe; KM) is a semi-parasitic plant growing on various trees. This plant hasbeen shown to possess a variety of biological functions such as immunomodulation, apoptosis-induction and antitumor activity. However, there is no information about how the extract of KM affects life span of the host. In this study, in order to examine the effect of KM on the longevity of the host, we investigated whether a Korean mistletoe extract (KME) was able to extend the life length in an experimental model using the spring silkworm moth of Bombyx mori (Lepidoptera bombycidae). We established a model test for survival in which all of the male and female moths died within 18 days after the beginning of the experiment. Mean survival time of female moths was longer than that of male moths. Both male and female moths fed with KME containing diet (200 or 400 ${\mu}g$/head/day) showed significantly higher mean survival times than those of the control moths. Studying the effect of KME on prolongation of mean survival time showed that male moths were more susceptible than female moths. The moths fed with KME-containing diet showed a slight decrease in body weight. Interestingly, however, no difference in food intake was observed between moths fed with KME-containing diet and those with control diet. In analysis for mRNA increase in the SIRT2 gene, a member of the Sir2 gene family playing important roles in regulation of cell death and prolongation of life span, moths fed with KME-containing diet showed a significant increase in SIRT2 gene expression. These results suggest that KME has a potential to extend the life span in Bombyx mori, and its effect is partly associated with increase in SIRT2 gene expression.
Edible coatings are one of the most innovative methods to preserve the quality and increase the shelf life of fresh fruits and vegetables. A successful edible coating should have a barrier against gases, especially oxygen and water vapor, and have good surface characteristics. Today, chitosan coating is widely used due to its properties, such as non-toxic, biodegradable, and biocompatibility. Is. Coating the surface of fruits and vegetables with chitosan increases shelf life due to reducing weight loss and reducing respiration rate and also reduces decay due to its antimicrobial and anti-fungal effect. This work discusses the effect of using chitosan coating containing chamomile extract to increase fresh vegetables'shelf life. In addition to increasing the shelf life of vegetables, this method can be used as a solution for the economic management of human resources. The results of this method confirm the successful synthesis of these nanoparticles, and the results of applying this food coating on vegetables have been successful. They have increased the shelf life of vegetables such as basil and spinach.
Objectives: In the past, the pharmaceutical drug heparin was mostly used as the anticoagulant for continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), but the duration time is long to have the risk of a bleeding adverse effect, and in that case the drug therapy Nafamostat mesilate was utilized instead, as it is more safe in this case, with a short half-life and is increasing in use to permit lower concerns for bleeding incidents. However, there are insufficient number of large-scale studies on the comparison of Nafamostat mesilate and heparin. Methods: In this study, a systematic review are used to compare the bleeding risk of Nafamostat mesilate and Heparin, as subjected to patients and procedures for measuring risks performed with a CRRT, and the filter life span is to be evaluated as well in this patients. Results: As a result of literature review search, a total of 6 studies were included in systematic review. The reducing risk of bleeding and filter life span was analyzed. The retrospective cohort studies confirm that Nafamostat mesilate is less at risk of bleeding than heparin. And a cohort study confirms that Nafamostat mesilate is longer filter lifespan than heparin and randomized controlled trial studies show that Nafamostat mesilate is longer filter lifespan than not using the anticoagulants. Conclusion: Nafamostat mesilate is considered to be a good therapeutic option because it has a longer filter life span as well as the advantage of reducing bleeding.

This paper deals with manufacturing conditions to increase the working die's life span which are the key factor in the manufacturing process of the coins and medals. Using the boundary element method, the stress diagram for the coining die was obtained, which was used to find the life span of working die. To iud the working die's life span related to the diameter of collar and blank coin, eight different sizes were tested and the optimal condition was obtained. With the adjusted impressing force, the working die's life span was increased up to 60 percent.
In this study, the antitumor activities were investigated using $\beta$-lmmunan, a proteoglycan obtained from cultured mycelia of the IY009 strain of Ganoderma lucidum belonging to basidiomycetes. The result showed the significant effect of cytotoxicity test against murine sarcoma 180 and murine lymphocytic leukemia L1210 using immunized macrophage cultures by $\beta$-lmmunan. When intraperitoneally injected at 40 mg/kg/day daily for 10 days, $\beta$-lmmunan inhibited the growth of sarcoma 180 solid tumor in ICR mice by 88.8% (p<0.05). It was also observed that $\beta$-lmmunan increased life span by 85.2% (p<0.01) after treatment of 100 mg/kg/day in BDF1 mice bearing lymphocytic leukemia L1210. And combination therapy with cisplatin (dosage: 4 mg/kg) increased life span by 140.4% (p<0.05) after treatment of 100 mg/kg/day daily in BDF1 mice bearing lymphocytic leukemia L1210.
It is important to evaluate the effect in the maintenance of steel bridge because the fatigue of the bridge is affected by the structural characteristic of bridge such as structure type, span and steel grade, etc. In this study, we analyzed the effect of fatigue strength by the changes of span of the bridge and the steel grade in many factors which have influence on the fatigue life of the bridge. For this analysis, we selected the objective bridges and performed the structural analyses for the various parameters such as span and steel grade. The fatigue evaluations were carried out by FAST which is a program for fatigue estimation and the results were compared.

Cordyceps, one of the well-known traditional Chinese medicines, consists of the dried fungus C. sinensis growing on the larva of caterpillar. It is commonly used as a tonic of restoring vital body functions. In order to evaluate the pharmacological effects of C. militaris, the anti-oxidation and antiaging effect of cultured C. militaris growing on pupa of silkworm Bombyx mori, were investigated. The results showed! that the contents of lipofusin in myocardium were reduced and the SOD activity in the liver were elevated in a dose-dependent manner while no effect was observed for blood GSH-Px activity and liver MDA content in mice perfused with the cultured C. militaris compared to those untreated mice. Furthermore, the average life span, maximum life span and 50% death time of the fruit flies treated with cultured C. militaris were markedly prolonged. The results suggest that the cultured C. militaris growing on pupa of silkworm possesses anti-oxidation and delay senescence activity.
The effect of ginseng saponin on chick embryonic dorsal root ganglia organ culture and brain, spinal cord, muscle dissociation cultures was studied. The fiber outgrowth in explanted chick embryonic dorsal root ganglia was markedly induced by water and alcohol extracts of ginseng, total ginseng saponin, protopanaxadiol and protopanaxatriol glycosides as well as ginsenosides R/sub b1/, R/sub d/, R/sub 0/+R/sub a/+R/sub b1/, and R/sub b2/+R/sub c/+R/sub e/ mixtures. The life span of the cultured chick embryonic dorsal root ganglia and potentiation of nerve cell density were also observed with all of these ginseng saponins. The effect of ginseng saponin on chick embryonic dorsal root ganglia organ culture was more marked in the absence of the chick embryonic extract which was known to contain nerve growth factor-like material in the culture media. However, the ginseng saponin did not influence the cultured central nervous system such as brain and spinal cord cells and cultured skeletal muscle cells with respect to the morphological changes, maturation and life span of these cells.
