In order to study on Bu-ja(Oh-du) toxicosis, the outhor investigated many documents. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Toxicosis of Bu-ja(Oh-du) arised mainly from carelessness in use. 2. In the symptoms of Bu-ja(Oh-du), Heart System(心系) symptom often came out. 3. The general and local paralysis, falling of blood pressure in Heart System(心系) symptom : vertigo, cramp in Liver System(肝系) symptom : nausea, vomiting in Spleen System (脾系) symptom : difficulty of breathing in Lung System(肺系) symptom : wasting disease in Kidney System (腎系) symptom frequently originated from toxicosis of Bu-ja(Oh-du). 4. In the detoification method, there are atropin injection, carrying out a gastric lavage, and supplying a liquid medicine from the western medicine : taking ginger-licorice root decoction, taking mung beans thick decoction and getting vomited with soaked cinnamon from the oriental medicine. And also keeping warm and oxygen inhalation were used to counteract poison. 5. A pregnant woman, heat of excess type(實熱), yang sydrome(陽證 )must not be taken Bu-ja(Oh-du).

Licochalcone E was firstly isolated from licorice root in 2005, which belongs to the retrochalcone family. Studies on the biological activities of licochalcone E were in the initial stage. In the study, we demonstrated that licochalcone E has potent antimicrobial property against Staphylococcus aureus. Furthermore, via hemolysis, Western blot, and real-time RT-PCR assays, we have shown that subinhibitory concentrations of licochalcone E dose-dependently reduces the production of ${\alpha}$-toxin in both methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). The data suggest that licochalcone E may deserve further investigation as a potential therapeutic against S. aureus infections, or the structure of licochalcone E may be used as a basis for chemical synthesis of novel anti-S. aureus compounds.

Recently, cancer chemoprevention with strategies using foods and medicinal herbs has been regarded as one of the most visible fields for cancer control. The genistein in soy, the American ginseng and the resveratrol in a grape are well known as that has antiproliferative properties in human breast cancer.(omitted)

To indentify inhibitors of melanogenesis. we compared the effect of some natural products on mushroom tyrosinase. human melanocytic tyrosinase activity and melanin content. The cytotoxicity of the component were also tested on cultured mouse melanoma cells, Each extract significantly inhibited tyrosinase activity and melanin synthesis in vitro and B 16 melanoma cell lines. In B 16 cell lines, watermelon's inner shell extract inhibited tyrosinase activity as strong as kojic acid at 150${\um}g$/${\mu}\ell$ concentration. And morning glory'seed extract inhibited melanin synthesis more than kojic acid at 150${\um}g$/${\mu}\ell$ concentration. Each extract were strong inhibitors of tyrosinase activity and total melanin synthesis in B 16 mouse melanoma cell lines at less than 100${\um}g$/${\mu}\ell$ concetration. These result show that extract of watermelon's inner shell. lettuce. morning glory's seed and licorice root could be developed as skin whitening component of cosmetics.

유럽감초와 개감초의 생육특성과 부위별, 뿌리굵기별 glycyrrhizin 및 유리당 함량을 분석 한 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 유럽감초는 주출경이 굵은 것을 정식할수록 지상부와 지하부 생육이 왕성하였고 개감초는 지제부의 싹이 붙은 근이 굵은 것을 정식할수록 지상부와 지하부 생육이 양호하였다. 2. 유럽감초는 개화결실이 되지 않았으나 주출경이 발생하였고 개감초는 개화 결실이 되어 종자채종이 가능하였으나 주출경은 발생하지 않았다. 3. 유럽감초 6년근의 부위별 무게조성은 주출경 73.2%, 주근 26.8%이었다. 4. 유럽감초의 부위별 glycyrrhizin과 유리당 함량은 주출경 > 주근 > 잎의 순이었고, 근굵기별로는 굵을수록 높았다. 5. 감초 종별 glycyrrhizin함량은 유럽감초 7.38%, 만주감초 5.29%, 개감초 0.15%의 순으로 나타났고, 유리당과 엑스함량도 glycyrrhizin 함량과 같은 경향이었다.

In this study, antioxidative and anti-inflammatory activities of the herb (cinnamon, clove, glehnia root, ginger, violet-root cromwell, licorice, citrus peel and longan) extracts used for gamhongroju, one of the popular liqueurs in Korea, were investigated. Twenty grams of individual herbs were extracted in 60% purified ethanol and freeze-dried. A mixture of the individual herb extracts (HEM) was separately prepared. Cytotoxicity of the individual extracts and HEM on murine RAW264.7 macrophage cells were examined along with their recovering activity on $H_2O_2$-treated RAW264.7 cells. Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of the extract-treated cells were determined by measuring superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities, and Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) levels. Violet-root cromwell extract showed the least cytotoxicity in terms of treated concentration. Most of the extracts, below levels of cytotoxicity, recovered the $H_2O_2$-treated cells. Treatment with some of the extracts increased SOD and GPx activities and TEAC levels while a majority inhibited the production of NO and PGE2 in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated cells.

The content of hesperidin in the mixed tea, which was composed of dried orange peel, laurel leaf, mulberry leaf, silver magnolia leaf, oriental melon tap, cassia seed, and licorice root, was determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Hesperidin was quantified by a reverse phase column with gradient solvent system (watcr:acetonitrile = 80:20 to 35:65 for 30 min) and UV/VIS detection (280 nm). The How rate was kept constant at 1.0 ml/min. The content of hesperidin in the mixed tea was measured in depending on extraction time 1, 2, 3, and 4 min (29.07, 52.39, 52.45, and 88.35 mg/g, respectively).

A study on efficacy and safety of Bio-Gammamix was performed to use for the preventive drug against bacterial diseases to mirror carp(Cyprinus carpio), rainbow trout(Salmo gairdneri), eel(Anguilla japonica) and flounder(Paralichthys olivaceus). The main ingredients of Bio-Gammamix were ferrous fumarate and mixed extrated powders of licorice root, ox bile and garlic. The test drug was proved to improve feeding habit and feed efficiency and decrease cumulative mortality remarkably. After administration, no side effects and histopathological changes were observed. We can prevent outbreaks of bacterial diseases of fish by the dosage of 1kg/ton of fish body weight perorally once or two times in a day for 7 days and Bio-Gammamix is thought to be used effectively an widely against most bacterial fish pathogens.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of dietary dae-chu(Rhamnace ziziphus, A), onion(Allium cepa L., O), mixture extracts (mulberry leaf, licorice root, pine needle, angelica gigas, jujube, onion, M) on serum glucose, lipid, enzyme, phosphorus levels in rats (Sprague-Dawley male rats, $357.03{\pm}7.08g$). Serum calcium of onion group was significantly decreased (p<0.05), but mixture extracts group of Cl (p<0.05) and TBIL (total bilirubin, p<0.05) were significantly increased. Serum glucose, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and triglyceride were increased experimental rats than those of the normal rats. Mixture extracts was better than other groups for lipid metabolism. Also, GPT(glutamic pyruvic transaminase) and GOT(glutamic oxaloacetate transaminase) of onion extracts were protected to liver. So mixture and onion extracts were good drink for health.
