This study is aimed to examine the characteristics of library space, in which user experiences and social networking are central in its design. Today, a library is a place to provide diverse accesses and experiences to information networks, where various individuals and user groups come and share mutual understanding and experiences. Library users developed social ties and a sense of community through library experiences. As a multipurpose space of a community, a library has the characteristics of urban public space like sidewalks and plazas. The eight case studies of libraries are analyzed from the viewpoint of each factor of library experience, including landscape, sidewalk, and plaza experience. The study drew its conclusions as follows. First, a library is a regional landmark for the users. Thus, it tends to be designed to allow transparency on its surface which introduces inner and outer landscape into the inside of the building. Second, the users experience a library similarly as they experience an urban street where they interface, browse, and interact with people and information. As they interact and share experiences, they develop solidarity and social ties among them. A library is designed to preserve continuity to adjacent streets, which increases accessibility to the building and hosts street activities into the building. Third, a library today is designed to be a flexible open space with information networking as well as community networking which allows library users diverse activities within it. For example, a multipurpose grand stairs in the middle of the main circulation of a building allows the users diverse activities. A large open stack with reading areas gives the users the feeling of an urban plaza where they can move vertically and horizontally. In conclusion, all findings of this study imply a user-oriented design for a library building.

This study is to design the barrier-free school library facilities for the disabled students. To achieve this goal, the laws, guidelines, and checklists in Korea and USA, concerning the accessible facilities for the disabled, are collected, researched and analysed. The 14 types of the accessible facilities which are suitable for the barrier-free school library are selected. On the barrier-free school library design, the guidelines of these selected facilities are presented as the result.

In architecture projects, BIM library has widely been using for prefabrication of products and design process. However, since the shape of structures is different by each project in civil engineering projects and a shape representation system is complicated, it is not easy to develop a standardized BIM library. To solve these issues, this study develops BIM library based on standardized 2D shop drawings for civil structures. The standardized shop drawings, which are the targets of the BIM library model, should be first selected. Besides, in order to define modeling scope with the level of general and shop drawings for each structure, LOD(Level of Detail) and breakdown structure are determined, and development methods of families of 3D object type including 2D profile and rebar through commercial software are established. With these, properties of BIM library are configured, and a utilization model of the BIM libraries is constructed for 3D modeling and a simulation using the BIM library. Therefore, this study can identify properties that are necessary when IFC schema is configured for civil engineering projects. For future, it is expected that easiness of BIM design for the civil engineering projects and generation, management, and analysis system of BIM library for road projects will be secured.

The purpose of this paper is to understand the meaning of 'institution' in Louis Kahn's architecture and to reveal that it is expressed through singularity and commonality, which have two aspects; formal-material(eidos-hyle) aspect and phenomenological aspect. Under these recognitions, this paper shows the detail analysis on design process of Phillips Exeter Academy Library, focusing on his writings and sketches. The results are as follows. First, the basic form is maintained through the design process of the Exeter library, and it is derived from the consideration of the human activities in the library. And second, each 'room' of the library acquires its singularity through structure and light. And the 'plan' is based on the commonality inherent in the singularity of each room. And the last, singularity and commonality are revealed not only In the relation of architectural elements but also In the relation with man and architecture.

This paper describes the design and implementation of a CAD object management system for the design library in VHDL design environment. For the efficient manipulation of design objects, the library is managed independently of the underlaid CAD system. Management and revision of design objects can be performed by a batch script of server commands or through the user interaction in the X/MOTIF graphic environment. Through the library server, design management tasks can be efficiently performed, such as configuration of design objects, version control, and management of attributes and methods for versions. Experimental results show that the proposed system is a viable tool for the management of design data in VHDL design environment.

A library of parametric CAD models should be provided for the reuse of design data in configuration design. Mechanical products have many options and parameters, which in turn, require a large number of CAD models for configuration designs. Existing methods for library construction are limited in their ability to decrease the number of CAD models and ensure independency between the configuration design system and the library. To solve these problems, we propose a method that controls a CAD library based on part-shape information model, and also present its technical details. To verify the proposed method, a CAD library for bicycles was constructed and design modification experiments using a prototype part-shape controller were performed. From the experiments, we found that the proposed method can effectively decrease the required number of CAD models by reusing models for configuration designs.

This study is including the independent project, "building children's library of the town" that is conducted by a local resident. The study object is the contents of the "design workshop for library planning" and the general process during one year since the opening. This study is delivering "information of children's library" through the work-shop and is conducting the role of a professional space planner by measuring the blueprint. Thus, the study could be conducted with synthetic viewpoint on each library. The followings are the results from the study. First, there were various space operations and a variety of programs in the case library that is independently managed. This is directing to "the constructive and active space usage" by the users and finally results in positive circulation. Secondly, there is a change through the process of execution and operation in the library construction plan. There are needs for the flexible space expansion and adjustment, modifiable furniture layout and design and various keeping areas because there is on-going tendency of corresponding space change. The third, the author could draw more practicable consideration points for space planning by looking at the trend of space change in Transactionist viewpoint. Thus, this study is very meaningful in terms of planning of sustainable public areas.

This study aims to make a method that user of design information can use design information actively, after grasped a demerit that the exiting design information is passively given to user of design information for library architecture. This study with the study purpose has significations as following. Firstly, user of design information is able to use the information proposed in this study more actively than the exiting design information, because the design information in this study is proposed as the relative structures for design solution. Secondly, user of design information is able to have a participation chance for design of public library as a community facility, because the design information in this study plays not only a role in a check list for library space but also a role in normative design information for library design.

Children stage is an important period the foundation of growth is accomplished. During the period, children are the most sensitive to environmental effects and experiences and interactions with surroundings can make lots of effects on their physical and cognitive development. Under the background of the above contents, a representative institution of the society, which is helpful to cultivate children's reading habit, will be children library. The purposes of this research are to analyze intensively reading room among the children library's spatial organization and compare/analyze cases of children library's reading room with the elements of interior environment. The methods of research are theory study and case study. Through the on-the-site visiting and shooting, interior environment design was investigated and then, it was arranged, analyzed and evaluated. Cases were analyzed by elements of interior environment design evaluation. As the result, comfort was the highest and variety was the lowest. Especially, Songpa children library showed various factors generally through the various designs. 7 evaluative elements of children library's reading room were mutually different, but there was a certain different in relation of them. Especially, variety and flexibility must be more strengthened. So, children can interests and joy in reading room various designs are requested by getting out of library's uniformed furniture and arrangement plan.

Library is a communication channel between book and human. Specially public library furniture plays an important role from every aspect in information materials and users, among users and in relationship between library managers and users. This study defined library furniture as a communication channel which connects library materials and users and was based on 35 local libraries and 12 overseas libraries. The author studied major elements and characteristics which constitute communication types among storage furniture, furniture in reading areas and furniture in digital reading area. The followings are the results from the study. First, storage furniture should be designed by reflecting characteristics of library materials and for effective delivering to the users. Therefore utmost communication can be made by searching for various designs in book-shelves and effective manner of display. Secondly, furniture in reading areas should support various users' needs from customized browsing to long hour studying and there should be properly supported for private space and correspondent reading postures. The third, there are needs for design conditions to support privacy and for comfort from long hour reading and mobility out of posture change in digital reading areas. The fourth, there should be ergonomically designed furniture plan and surroundings in public library which can boost various reading postures. Also furniture plan should be done by considering users' bodies and eyes orientations which can result in improved power of concentration.
