Delineation and Land Use Analysis of the Former Floodplains Isolated by Levees in the Cheongmi-cheon Stream, Korea (청미천에서 제방에 의해 격리된 옛홍수터의 경계 설정과 토지이용 분석)

  • For the restoration of lateral connectivity between channel and floodplain, it is important to find the former floodplain and to characterize its land use in streams which were channelized by the levee construction for the flood protection. The aim of this study is to map the former floodplains and to assess its land use pattern in the Cheongmi-cheon Stream, Korea. The former floodplains were explored by being overlapped on a digital elevation model (DEM), digital topographic map and design flood level using a geographical information system (GIS) in the Cheongmi-cheon Stream basin. The land use of the identified former floodplains was classified by land-use map. The total number of the former floodplains was 104 and their total area was $11.9km^2$ in the Cheongmi-cheon Stream. The land use pattern of the former floodplains was mostly farmland (87.1%). The former floodplains were usually surrounded by mountain forest in the downstream of the Cheongmi-cheon Stream. These former floodplains are probably suitable for restoration of lateral connectivity because of lower ratio of urban area but higher ratio of farmland. The results of delineation and land use analysis of the former floodplain can be used as a baseline data for planning stream restoration in the Cheongmi-cheon Stream.

Preliminary Nitrogen Removal Rates in Close-to-Nature Constructed Stream Water Treatment Wetland (하천수정화 근자연형 인공습지의 초기 질소제거)

  • A 0.19 hectare stream water purification demonstration wetland was constructed and planted with cattails from April 2001 to May 2001. Some portions of its bottom surfaces adjacent to levees have a variety of slope of 1:4 $\sim$ 1:15 and two small open water areas were installed in the wetland. These make its shape closer to a natural wetlant Nitrogen removal was a major objective of the wetlant Waters of Sinyang Stream flowing into Kohung Esturiane Lake located southern coastal region of Korean Peninsula were pumped and funneled into it. Volumes and water quality of inflow and outflow were analyzed from July 2001 through December 2001. Average inflow and outflow were 120 $m^3/d$ and 112 $m^3/d$, respectively. Hydraulic retention time was about 3.1 days. Average nitrate and total nitrogen removal rate for the early stage of the wetlands were 85.8 $mg/m^2/day$, 171.4 $mg/m^2/day$ respectively. Full establishment of cattails within a few years can develope litter-soil substrates and supply available carbon sources beneficial to the denitrification of nitrate. These can lead to increases of the nitrate retention rate. Short circuiting and dead zone areas which might be occurred due to the close-to-nature layout of the wetland were not observed during the monitoring period.

Non-stationary Frequency Analysis with Climate Variability using Conditional Generalized Extreme Value Distribution (기후변동을 고려한 조건부 GEV 분포를 이용한 비정상성 빈도분석)

  • An underlying assumption of traditional hydrologic frequency analysis is that climate, and hence the frequency of hydrologic events, is stationary, or unchanging over time. Under stationary conditions, the distribution of the variable of interest is invariant to temporal translation. Water resources infrastructure planning and design, such as dams, levees, canals, bridges, and culverts, relies on an understanding of past conditions and projection of future conditions. But, Water managers have always known our world is inherently non-stationary, and they routinely deal with this in management and planning. The aim of this paper is to give a brief introduction to non-stationary extreme value analysis methods. In this paper, a non-stationary hydrologic frequency analysis approach is introduced in order to determine probability rainfall consider changing climate. The non-stationary statistical approach is based on the conditional Generalized Extreme Value(GEV) distribution and Maximum Likelihood parameter estimation. This method are applied to the annual maximum 24 hours-rainfall. The results show that the non-stationary GEV approach is suitable for determining probability rainfall for changing climate, sucha sa trend, Moreover, Non-stationary frequency analyzed using SOI(Southern Oscillation Index) of ENSO(El Nino Southern Oscillation).

Suitability Examination of Flex sensor and FBG Sensor for Levee Safety Management (제방 안전관리를 위한 Flex센서와 FBG센서의 적용성 검토)

  • Collapse of the levee surrounding structure(culvert) accounts for l0 % of collapse factors of the river levees. In particular, in 2002, the levee collapse that happened at "Nakdong River" at flood usually happened around culverts. This levee collapse has mechanism that the cavity expands with internal erosion at flood after the pore and cavity are formed between culvert and levee copula which are heterogeneity material. The study regarding the cavity or flowing detection around a culvert for safety management of a river levee is in the proceeding. In this study, the characteristic of two sensors could be figured out through an experiment about displacement measure of Flex sensor and FBG sensor and the decision of more suitable sensor was possible for safety supervision of river levee. According to an experiment result, several characteristics of FBG sensor could be known in consistency of the measure data and minute displacement measure part regarding displacement measure and this characteristic may supplement a shortcoming of Flex sensor at this time.

The Study on the Characteristics of Ground Beetle (Coleoptera: Carabidae) Community for Conservation of Biodiversity in Agricultural Landscape (농업경관에서의 생물다양성 보전을 위한 딱정벌레 군집 특성 연구)

  • This study was conducted to provide basic information for development of habitat-based conservation strategies of biological diversity in agricultural ecosystem. The carabid beetle assemblages were examined at four kinds of habitats(levee, dike, forest patch remnants and streamside) from three differently stressed areas located in Paltan-myun, Hwaseong city, Korea: agricultural and forest area(site 1), industrial area(site 2), and residential area(site 3). Pitfall trap samplings were carried out 39 times from November 2000 to November 2002. Our study's findings were that the composition of carabid beetle fauna, dominance species, and pattern of carabid beetle assemblage were different among the habitats. The similarity index was highest between two levees in site 2 and 3, and lowest between hillock in site 2 and streamside in site 3, and that among habitats fragmented by road with high traffic was lower than that among any other habitat types. So, we could know that agricultural land use respectively do an important role in diversity conservation and networking. These findings will be used to establish the land use and management plans in the aspects of conservation of biodiversity.

Status of Birds using Rice Fields in Mid-western Part of Korean Peninsula (한반도 중서부 지역 논습지를 이용하는 조류 현황)

  • BACKGROUND: Rice fields are one of the most important habitats for various bird species. The list of bird species occurred in rice fields in Korean peninsula have been documented. However, information of listed bird species is included not only rice fields but also other wetland habitats such as lakes, tidal flats and rivers. Therefore, the study was conducted to clarify the status of bird observed in rice fields of Korea.METHODS AND RESULTS: Birds using rice fields defined as birds which forage or rest on rice paddies, levees, ditches and farming roads. Birds using rice fields recorded as total 124 species belonging to 40 families. Anatidae and Scolopacidae were the best represented family, followed by Ardeidae, Accipitridae, Motacillidae and Emberizidae; 50% of species belonged to these six families. 18 of 124 endangered wild species, which designated threatened at the national scale, found in this study regions.CONCLUSION: Despite interest in birds using rice fields of Korean peninsula, knowledge of birds and rice fields there is extremely limited. We need more studies to understand and conserve for birds in rice fields of Korea.

Dynamic Deformation Properties of Coarse Granular Materials with Respect to Gradation Characteristics (조립재료의 입도특성에 따른 동적 변형특성 평가)

  • Coarse granular geomaterials containing large gravels are broadly used for construction of large geotechnical systems such as dams, levees, railways and backfills. It is necessary to evaluate deformation characteristics of these materials for dynamic analysis, e.g. seismic design. This study presents evaluation of dynamic deformation characteristics of coarse materials using large scale resonant column testing apparatus, which uses specimens with 200 mm in diameter and 400 mm in height, and the effects of gradation characteristics on maximum shear modulus, shear modulus reduction curve and damping characteristics were investigated. From experimental study using rock-fill materials for a dam, we could see that the largest or mean particle size affects the shape of shear modulus reduction curve. When the specimens are prepared under the same conditions for maximum particle size, the coefficient of uniformity affects the confining stress exponent of maximum shear modulus. It could be concluded that the maximum particle size is an factor which affects shear modulus reduction curve, and that the coefficient of uniformity is for small strain shear modulus, especially for the sensitivity to confining stress.

  • General reliability assessment of levees embankment is performed with safety factors for rainfall characteristics and hydrologic and hydraulic parameters, based on the results of deterministic analysis. The safety factors are widely employed in the field of engineering handling model parameters and the diversity of material properties, but cannot explain every natural phenomenon. Uncertainty of flood analysis and related parameters by introducing stochastic method rather than deterministic scheme will be required to deal with extreme weather and unprecedented flood due to recent climate change. As a consequence, stochastic-method-based measures considering parameter uncertainty and related factors are being established. In this study, a variety of dimensionless cumulative rainfall curve for typhoon and monsoon season of July to September with generation method of stochastic temporal variation is generated by introducing Monte Carlo method and applied to the risk assessment of levee embankment using reliability index. The result of this study reflecting temporal and regional characteristics of a rainfall can be used for the establishment of flood defence measures, hydraulic structure design and analysis on a watershed.

A Freezing Method for Concurrence Control in Secure Real-Time Database Systems (실시간 보안 데이타베이스 시스템에서 병행수행 제어를 위한 얼림 기법)

  • Database systems for real-time applications must satisfy timing constraints associated with transactions. Typically, a timing constraint is expressed in the form of a deadline and is represented as a priority to be used by schedulers. Recently, security has become another important issue in many real-time applications. In many systems, sensitive information is shared by multiple users with different levees of security clearance. As more advanced database systems are being used in applications that need to support timeliness while managing sensitive information, there is an urgent need to develop concurrency control protocols in transaction management that satisfy both timing and security requirements. In this paper, we propose two concurrence control protocols that ensure both security and real-time requirements. The proposed protocols are primarily based on multiversion locking. However, in order to satisfy timing constraint and security requirements, a new method, called the FREEZE, is proposed. In addition, we show that our protocols work correctly and they provide a higher degree of concurrency than existing multiversion protocols. We Present several examples to illustrate the behavior of our protocols, along with performance comparisons with other protocols. The simulation results show that the proposed protocols can achieve significant performance improvement.

A Study on Estimation of Levee Safety Map for Determining the Priority of River Maintenance (하천 유지관리 우선순위 결정을 위한 제방안전도맵 산정방법 연구)

  • Owing to recent climate change, the scale of rainfall tends to increase gradually and the risk of flooding has increased. Therefore, the importance of improving the levee management and disaster response is increasing. Levee management in Korea is carried out at the level of damage recovery after the occurrence of damage. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a technology for predicting and managing the levee safety with proactive river management. In this study, a method to estimate the safety against erosion and overflow was suggested. A map of levee safety that can be used as basic data is presented by displaying the levee safety on the map. The levee erosion safety was calculated as the ratio of the internal and external force for each shore type. The levee overflow safety was calculated as the ratio of the maximum conveyance and design flood. The maximum conveyance was a discharge when the level of the river was equal to the level of the levee crown. The levee safety was classified into 5 grades: very safe, safe, normal, dangerous, and very dangerous. As a research area from downstream of Nam River Dam to Nakdong River Junction, the levee safety against erosion and overflow was estimated for all levees and all cross-sections of the river. The levee safety was displayed on a map using GIS. Through the levee safety map as a result of this study, the levee safety can be observed intuitively. Using the levee safety map, a maintenance plan for a river can be easy to build. This levee safety map can be used to help determine the priority of investment for efficient budget used.
