Vitis amurensis (VA; Vitaceae) has long been used in oriental herbal medicine. It has been reported that roots and seeds of VA have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. In the present study, the protective effect of ethanol extract from stems and leaves of VA on hydrogen peroxide (${H_2}{O_2}$) (100 ${\mu}M$)-induced neuronal cell damage was examined in primary cultured rat cortical neurons. VA (10-100 ${\mu}g$/ml) concentration-dependently inhibited ${H_2}{O_2}$-induced apoptotic neuronal cell death measured by 3-[4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and Hoechst 33342 staining. VA inhibited ${H_2}{O_2}$-induced elevation of intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ concentration (${[Ca^{2+}]}_i$) and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which were measured by fluorescent dyes. Pretreatment of VA also prevented glutamate release into medium induced by 100 ${\mu}M$${H_2}{O_2}$, which was measured by HPLC. These results suggest that VA showed a neuroprotective effect on ${H_2}{O_2}$-induced neuronal cell death by interfering with ${H_2}{O_2}$-induced elevation of ${[Ca^{2+}]}_i$, glutamate release, and ROS generation. This has a significant meaning of finding a new pharmacological activity of stems and leaves of VA in the CNS.
The interaction effects of ozone $(O_3)$ and anthracnose (Colletotrichum acutatum) disease were examined in green fruits and seedlings of pepper (Capsicum annuum). Pre-treatment with $(O_3)$ as a factor causing predisposition to the disease prior to infection was investigated in green fruits and stems using an $(O_3)$ concentration of 150 nL/L, which is easily reached in summer in Korea. $(O_3)$ treatment increased antioxidative responses in pepper foliar tissues, and defense against anthracnose was examined in fruits and stems. Anthracnose severity on stems of the $O_3-treated$, ozone-sensitive 'Dabotop' cultivar was always lower than that on untreated plants, but the difference was not always significant (p=0.147). Significantly lower anthracnose severity was found on $O_3-treated$ green 'Dabotop' fruits as compared to untreated green fruits in three of eight replicate experiments. In contrast, hypersensitive responses in 03treated seedlings were significantly accelerated compared to those in untreated seedlings by about 7.8 h (p<0.001). This confirmed previous evidence of increased transcription of plant defense genes with $(O_3)$ treatment. $(O_3)$ treatment significantly decreased chlorophyll concentrations in the leaves in four replicate experiments (p<0.01). $(O_3)$ increased hypersensitive responses in the leaves of pepper seedlings, but this increase did not contribute to the control of anthracnose severity on fruits. Antioxidant reactions to $(O_3)$ were limited to chlorosis and changes in hypersensitive responses in leaves.

Cudrania tricuspidata has been used for a long time as a traditional herb medicine in Korea nad China. This paper has shown the experimental results about the physiological activities of water-, ethanol-, ethyl acetate-soluble fractions from ethanolic extracts of leaves, stems and roots of Cudrania tricuspidata. The effects of these fractions on the growth of various cells have exhibited that the ethyl acetate fractions from leaves, stems and roots inhibited significantly the growths of macrophage(RAW 264.7 cell), melanoma cell(B16-F10 cell), fibroblast cell(CCD-986sk cell), and lung carcinoma cell(A549 cell). The water and ethanol fractions of leaves and ethanol fraction of stems demonstrated better antioxidant activities scavenging radicals than other fractions when compared with the concentrations of different fractions for scavenging free radical DPPH (di(phenyl)-(2,4,6-trinitrophenyl) iminoazanium).
Dendropanax morbifera Lev. is known in Korea for its golden sap and medicinal properties. The many biological activities of the leaf and stem extracts suggest that this tree could be a valuable source of medicinal compounds for the treatment of various ailments such as dermatitis, migraines, dysmenorrhea, muscle pain, and infectious diseases. However, there is little information on the composition and biological activity of the volatile fraction of D. morbifera. Therefore, in this study, the volatile compounds in leaves, stems, and sap of D. morbifera were isolated using solvent and supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), and analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry to reveal their chemical composition and identify potential compounds of interest. Fifteen compounds were identified in the leaf extracts, whereas 29 and 3 compounds were identified in the stem and sap extracts, respectively. The volatile profiles obtained using solvent and SFE differed. Esters and aromatic hydrocarbons predominated in the solvent extract of leaves and SFE extract of stems, whereas the solvent extract of stems and SFE extract of leaves contained terpenoids. Limonene, ${\alpha}$-pinene, and ${\beta}$-myrcene were identified in the volatile extract of sap, with limonene representing 96.30% of the total peak area. In addition, the antiproliferative effects of the solvent extracts of leaves and stems were evaluated, revealing that these solvent extracts were particularly effective in decreasing the proliferation of HepG2 cells.
Through immersing barley seeds (variety; Suwon No. 6) into different dilution of carrier-free P-32 original solution (Total activity; 90mc, To; 3/21) for 24 hours at room temperature, four groups of seeds (each group consists of 200 seeds) having activity levels of 1.6$\times$10-3$\mu$c 32P/grain, 2.3$\times$10-1$\mu$c 32P/grain 6.9$\times$100$\mu$c 32P/grain and 2.5$\times$101$\mu$c 32P/grain respectively, were obtained. To investigate the effects of various activity levels of P-32 absorbed upon the test plants, the seeds were germinated, transplant into the pots, and the growth was observed for three months after germination. After harvest, the inorganic contents in the leaves and the stems were also analyzed. The results: 1) Until four days after the beginning of germination, the rate of germination was found the lowest at the strongest activity level of 2.5$\times$101$\mu$c/grain. At the other P-32 levels treated, it showed generally higher than the control. 2) Before transplanting the seedlings of both 1.6$\times$103$\mu$c/grain and 2.3$\times$10-1uc/grain levels showed more vigorous growth than the control, whereas at the 6.9$\times$100 uc/grain level a retarded growth was conspicuous and all of plants belonging to the highest activity level of 2.5$\times$101$\mu$c/grain were withered owing apparently to the radiation damage. 3) This trend of growth promotion was continnually observed at the low activity levels even after transplanting the seeldings to the pots. As for the plants belonging to 6.9$\times$100$\mu$c/grain level, a clear sign of gradual recovery from the damage afflicted at the earlier stage was observable, and as a result the plants showed more growth than those of control two months after transplanting. 4) The number of stems diverged was found somewhat small in the blocks treated with P-32, compared with that of control until two months after germination. At the later stage of growth there seemed no significant difference among the themselves. 5) The dry weight of leaves and stems was proved that the lower the activity, the mroe it was produced. The relative increase of dry matter in each treatment compared with the control was 2% at 6.9$\times$105$\mu$c/grain level, 9% at 2.3$\times$10-1$\mu$c/grain and 35% at 1.6$\times$10-3$\mu$c/grain respectively. 6) The inorganic contents of the leaves and stems harvested were proved that: (1) Nitrogen was highest at the lowest activity level of 2.3$\times$10-1$\mu$c/grian. (2) Phosphorus showed generally higher contents in the treated blocks than in control, with the peak being at 2.3$\times$10-1$\mu$c/grain. (2) Phosphorus showed generally higher contents in the treated blocks than in contro, with the peak being at 2.3$\times$10-1$\mu$c/grain level in the leaves and at 6.9$\times$100$\mu$c/grain in the stems. (3) These was no significant difference in potassium contents in the leaves between treatment and control, whereas in the stem the treated blocks were higher than control roughly in propotion to the activity level. (4) Calcium in the lesves was richer in treated blocks than control while in the stem no difference was seen. (5) Magnesium contents both in leaves and in stems there was no difference among treatments.
Anatomical features of both leaves and stems of the four mistletoes in Korea (Viscum album var. coloratum, Korthalsella japonica, Loranthus yadoriki, L. tanaka) and of their secondary haustorial structure within several host plants were investigated. Among the four mistletoes, there were diagnostic characters of the anatomy of leaves and stems which enabled us to distinguish the four taxa. Leaves were observed to have three distinct characters including unifacial or bifacial leaves, the number of vascular bundles in the midveins, and the level of development of sclerenchyma cells. There were four diagnostic characters of stems: overall morphology of stems in transverse view, degree of cuticle development, arrangement of vascular bundles, and features of the sclerenchyma and pith. In order to determine secondary haustorial traits, the research focused on the seven host plants of L. yadoriki and on the five host plants of K. japonica. The following features were found to be important: presence or absence of an aerial runner root, the shape of the haustorial strand and flange, the degree of penetration into host tissues, and their development of shaft in transverse view, the development both of secondary haustorial cells and short tracheid in hyphae. Korthalsella japonica and L. yadorki were clearly distinguished by these characters. The secondary haustorial forms in each host were somewhat different, due to varying degrees of development in the strength of the host plants' wood. However, qualitative characters like the final position of the secondary haustorial penetration into host tissues and the development of short tracheid cells were not only affected by the degree of development of the host plants, but also useful for the systematic study.
BACKGROUND: Yeast isolates associated with the leaves, stems, and flowers of the tiger lily needed to be identified using isolation methods that have previously been used effectively in yeast biotechnology. A culture-based approach was necessary for the isolation of many yeast strains associated with tiger lily. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, the homogenized leaves, stems, and flowers of tiger lily were spreaded onto GPY medium containing chloramphenicol, streptomycin, Triton X-100, and L-sorbose. A total of 82 yeast strains from the leaves, 94 and 97 yeast strains from the stems and flowers were isolated, respectively. Yeast isolates were identified by phylogenetic analysis based on internal transcribed spacer region sequencing. The yeast species isolated from the leaves comprised of 31 isolates of the genus Pseudozyma, 28 of Aureobasidium pullulans, and 11 of the genus Cryptococcus. Those isolated from the stems comprised of 40 of A. pullulans and 11 of Cryptococcus, and 95 of A. pullulans While, 1 isolate each of the genera Rhodotorula and Metschnikowia were isolated from the flowers. CONCLUSION: We identified site-specific yeast communities associated with tiger lily. These yeast isolates may have high potential for application in the field of biotechnology.

The charantin contents of leaves, stems, female and male flowers, and fruits in bitter gourd (Momordica charantia) were analyzed at different harvest seasons to investigate the availability of potential edible parts other than fruits. The charantin contents of fruits ranged from 14.7 to $16.0mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$ dry weight (DW) and those of leaves ranged from 131.4 to $138.0mg{\cdot}g^{-1}DW$, which was eight times higher than in fruits. The charantin contents of female and male flowers and stems were also significantly higher than those of the fruits. The ratio of total charantin content was highest in leaves (48%) of DW, followed by female flowers (20-21%), male flowers (14%), stems (12-13%), and fruits (5%). The charantin contents of fruits harvested 14 days after fruit setting was higher in June to mid-July (20.2 to $23.3mg{\cdot}g^{-1}DW$) than in late July to late August (13.3 to $19.4mg{\cdot}g^{-1}DW$). The higher the fruit weight, the lower the charantin contents, which showed that a negative correlation exists between fruit weight and charantin contents in bitter gourd. These results suggest that to obtain bitter gourd fruits with high charantin contents, fruits should be harvested until mid-July when fruit growth is fast and temperature is high. In addition, leaves, stems, and female and male flowers of bitter gourd can be used as for food, which are known to reduce blood sugar level.

We examined the forage quality to provide the basic information for the utilization of blackberry by-products (leaf and stem) among thirty-five mutant lines derived from gamma-ray. The leaves had higher crude protein (CP) contents than stems. In addition, the leaves showed broad ranges of variation in crude fat, crude fiber and crude ash. The overall forage quality of the stems were similar to those of the original variety. The mean of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) content of leaves and stems in mutant lines were 25.88% and 58.98%, respectively. Also, the mean of acid detergent fiber (ADF) content of leaves and stems in mutant lines were 15.43% and 49.27%, respectively. Forage quality grades of all blackberry leaf were special quality class. However, the blackberry stem ranked $1^{st}$ to $5^{th}$ in quality class. The stem diameter was negatively ($P{\leq}0.05$) correlated with the moisture and crude protein. Also, the fruit length was highly negatively ($P{\leq}0.01$) correlated with the RFV (relative feed value) in blackberry leaf. The one hundred fruit weight was highly negatively ($P{\leq}0.01$) correlated with the crude ash. Based on these results, the by-products of blackberry could provide high quality forage for feeding of live stock.

The antioxidant activitiesof methanol extracts of twenty one vegetables were tested using the method of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) reactivity and TBARS substance assay in vitro. The methanol extracts of the leaves from three plants such as Aster scaber, Chrysanthemum coronarium, Petasites japonicus were found to be th most effective on DPPH radical scavenging activity. The next effective ones were the leaves of Capsicum annuum, the peels of Ipomoea batatas and Solanum tuberosum, the stems and leaves of Ipomoea batatas, the levels of Solanum melongena, the fruits of Solanum melongena, the green fruits (seed) of Capsicum ammuum in order, and the others did not show a considerable activity. When tested on lipid peroxidation using a lipid peroxidation generation system mediated by $H_{2}O_{2}/Fe^{2+}$ in rat liver homogenates. the peels of Cucumis melo, the leaves and the fruits of Solanum melongena, of Solanum melongena, The levels of Aster scaber and Chrysanthemum coronarium, the stems and leaves of Ipomoea batatas and the peels of Ipomoea batatas were found to exhibit a good protective activity against lipid peroxidatian in the order of effectiveness.
