Melt Grafting of Citraconic Acid onto an Ethylene-Propylene-Diene Terpolymer (EPDM) -Effect of Reaction Conditions and Initiator Type on the Melt Grafting of Citraconic Acid onto EPDM- (EPDM고무와 씨트라코닉산의 melt grafting - 반응조건과 개시제에 따른 영향 연구 -)

  • Melt grafting of citraconic acid (CCA) onto an ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM) with various peroxide initiators was performed using a Haake Rheocorder. Finding the optimum running condition and concentration is critical for effective grafting and performance of grafted material. Therefore, this study focused on the effects of mixing (reaction) condition and monomer/initiator dosages on the grafting degree, grafting efficiency and crosslinking degree (gel content), melt flow index and mechanical properties of CCA-g-EPDM. As the grafting degree/crosslinking degrees increased, the tensile strength increased significantly, but elongation at break and melt flow index decreased. The initiator 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(tert-butyl peroxy)-hexane (T-101) appeared to meet for the best grafting(2.31%). The grafting degree increased markedly with increasing monomer CCA/initiator T-101 contents. The grafting degree also increased with increasing mixing temperature/time, and then leveled off or decreased/increased a little. The optimum monomer/initiator dosages and reaction temperature/time were found to be about 5/0.05 wt% and $180^{\circ}C$/15min, respectively.

A Study on Adhesion Characteristics for Rubber Parts of Footwear Containing Plasma Treatment (플라즈마 처리에 의한 신발용 고무부품의 접착특성 연구)

  • In this study, we studied surface and adhesion properties with plasma treatment for substitution of buffing and solvent-cleaning in footwear adhesion process. The distance between nozzle and rubber parts was decreased with decreasing the contact angle. And when a speed of plasma treatment increased, the contact angle increased. The result of surface roughness, Ra and Rz increased in 20% and 16% after the plasma treatment. The distance of between nozzle and rubber parts was decreased with decreasing the peel strength. And the speed of plasma treatment was increased with decreasing the peel strength.

  • In this study, solvent based polyurethane (PU) adhesives were prepared with the hydrocarbon resin and the acrylic modified hydrocarbon resin contents. The solvent based PU adhesive were increased with increasing tackifier concentration. The surface state of films showed good compatibility with increasing the PX-95 concentration but A-1100 series didn't present homogeneous phase more than 10 phr. Mechanical strength and peel strength were maximum at 5 phr tackifier concentration especially PX-95 series in solvent based PU adhesive.

  • In this work, we observed the effect of silica, zinc oxide, zinc ion coated silica on carboxylic acid modified styrenic thermoplastic elastomer (m-TPS) film for friction-induced surface fracture. m-TPS film added general silica showed poor mechanical properties, anti-abrasion and friction-induced surface fracture, caused by strong filler-filler interaction of silica. In case of m-TPS films added zinc oxide or zinc ion coated silica, mechanical properties, anti-abrasion and friction-induced surface fracture were improved due to forming ionic cluster between carboxylic acid group of m-TPS and zinc ion. Ionic cluster were confirmed by FT-IR analysis that observed zinc carboxylated group stretch peak at $1550{\sim}1650cm^{-1}$.

  • This study focuses on mechanical property enhancement and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) reduction characteristic of environmentally-friendly waterborne coatings. We synthesized a series of organic-inorganic hybrid waterborne polyurethanes by using poly(tetramethylene glycol) 2000, polycarbonate diol 2000, isophorone diisocyanate, dimethylolpropionic acid and titanium dioxide. The study on the effects of the R ratio([NCO]/[OH]) and inorganic contents on environmentally-friendly waterborne coatings showed that the R ratio with more than 1.5 is appropriate due to arrangement of hardsegments. The applied $TiO_2$ on films reduced volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

  • In this study, Waterborne polyurethanes (WPU) using Epoxy group were synthesized with polyester polyol, epoxy resin, 4,4-dicyclohexylmethane diisocyanate ($H_{12}MDI$), dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA) to improve the hydrolysis resistance and adhesion. In addition, the properties of the synthesized waterborne polyurethane was evaluated through DSC, UTM, adhesion strength. Tg of the synthesized waterborne polyurethane is shown in the vicinity of $-50^{\circ}C$. Tg were increased with as epoxy resin contents increased. The tensile strength was increased as the content of epoxy resin increases, elongation was decreased. Optimum adhesion and hydrolysis-resistance strength were obtained when polyol : epoxy ratio was 99 : 1.

  • In this study, waterborne polyurethane (WPU)/nano ZnO was synthesized from various polyester polyols, 4,4-dicyclohexylmethane diisocyanate ($H_{12}MDI$), dimethylolpropionic acid (DMPA), triethylamine (TEA) and ethylenediamine (EDA), nano ZnO. The contents of metal oxide were varied from 0 to 1.0 wt% of total solid. The effects of nano ZnO contents and ionic contents in the WPU/nano ZnO on thermal, mechanical properties were studied. The glass transition temperature ($T_g$) of WPU/nano ZnO do not show a distinct tendency with incorporation of nano ZnO and the $T_g$ of WPU/nano ZnO a little increased with increase of DMPA contents. The tensile strength and 100% modulus increase and elongation at break decreases with increase of nano ZnO contents and DMPA contents.

  • In this study, waterborne polyurethane acrylate were synthesized with polyester polyol, 4,4-dicyclohexylmethane diisocyanate ($H_{12}MDI$), dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA), acrylate monomer to improve the properties and peel strength. In addition, the properties of the synthesized waterborne polyurethane acylate was evaluated through FT-IR, particle size analysis, UTM, peel strength. As the acrylic acid content increased, particle size increased. In the results of mechanical properties, when the acrylic acid contents increased, tensile strength was increased but elongation was decreased. All peel strength was improved as the acrylic acid contents of WPUA and acrylate ratio of PU/acrylate increased. Optimum peel strength obtained when acrylic acid was 0.5 wt%.

  • EPDM(Ethylene-propylene-diene-terpolymer) compound reinforced with carbon black having four different particle size, acetylene black(thermal conductivity carbon black), and silica were manufactured by internal mix and open mill. To investigate the effect of particle size of filler and filler type on far-infrared vulcanization, intermal temperature of compound, degree of curing, infrared spectroscopy, and thermal analysis were measured. The thermal conductivity of far-infrared vulcanized EPDM compound increased with increasing particle size of carbon filler, but hot air vulcanized EPDM compound is not affected by particle size. The thermal conductivity was increased in the order of carbon black < silica < acetylene black(thermal conductivity carbon black).

  • In this study, low-viscosity polyurethane hot-melt were synthesized with polyether polyol / polyester polyol, 4,4-dicyclohexylmethane diisocyanate ($H_{12}MDI$), 2-butanone oxime (MEKO) to improve the properties and peel strength. The properties of the synthesized low-viscosity polyurethane hot-melt was evaluated through FT-IR, viscosity meter and UTM. When the content of the reactive diluent increases and the NCO-blocked prepolymer decreases, the viscosity of low-viscosity polyurethane hot-melt adhesive was increased. When the ratio of OH-terminated oligomer, NCO-blocked prepolymer and content of reactive diluent is 1 : 0.5 : 0.5, low-viscosity polyurethane hot-melt showed 1.1 kgf/cm peel strength.
