Distance Learning for Students with Intellectual Disability during the Emerging Coronavirus Pandemic: Opportunities and Challenges from Parents' Perspectives

  • Distance learning for students with intellectual disabilities can prove beneficial, particularly if adjusted to their educational characteristics and needs. This study seeks to identify the views of parents living in Saudi Arabia, regarding the opportunities offered by distance learning for students with intellectual disabilities, alongside their challenges during the Covid-19 pandemic. The research employed qualitative methods using semi-structured interviews with six parents of students with intellectual disabilities. The results revealed a number of both opportunities and challenges, including issues related to the family, in addition, the data highlighted difficulties related to the educational process (i.e. a lack of variety of educational methods) and technical issues related to access to the Internet and the insufficient computer skills of both teachers and students. The findings have several important implications for future practice, including the need for training workshops for parents concerning the online platform, as well as further research to determine students' perspectives of their experiences with distance learning.

초등학교 수학교과서 속 과제의 학습 경로 분석: 넓이와 부피를 중심으로 (How do Korean Elementary Textbooks Pace Students' Learning to Learning Trajectories? : Focus on Area and Volume)

  • 학생의 학습기회를 형성하는 데 있어 교과서는 상당히 중요한 역할을 한다. 이를 고려하면 교과서 분석은 학생들에게 어떠한 학습 기회를 제공하는지 이해하는데 있어 중요하다. 본 연구는 초등학교 수학교과서를 학습 경로(learning trajectory)에 제시된 넓이와 부피 개념의 이해의 발달 단계에 비추어 분석하였다. 1~6학년의 수학교과서 속의 넓이와 부피에 관한 과제들을 그 과제를 해결하는데 요구되는 사고와 행동을 기초로 학습 경로에 제안 된 발달 단계를 이용하여 코딩하였다. 그 결과, 수학교과서 속의 과제와 학습 경로 간의 상당한 불일치를 발견하였다. 우선, 교과서는 학습 경로에 제안 된 나이보다 상당히 늦게 해당 학습 기회를 제공하였다. 또한, 넓이의 경우 5학년, 부피의 경우 6학년에 학습 기회가 집중되어 있었으며, 이런 집중된 학습 기회도 개념의 발달보다는 넓이 또는 부피의 공식을 적용하는데 중점을 두었다. 본 연구의 결과는 교과서 개발뿐만 아니라 수학수업에서 학생의 학습 기회를 확장시키는데 중요한 시사점을 제시한다.

Designing a Project-based Service-Learning Course for Pre-dental Education: A Theoretical Exploration

  • This study is a theoretical exploration of project-based service-learning and its application in designing pre-dental curricula. As a response to the limitation of community service courses, service-learning has been implemented as pedagogy in higher education practices. Service-learning connects service and learning by engaging students in activities that address community needs with intentionally designed learning opportunities while adding value to and transforming both service and learning. Project-based service-learning is an extended and more active version of service-learning. Whereas service activities are arranged by instructors in the original service-learning, project-based service-learning provides students with opportunities for exploring problems and root causes on site and then devising and implementing solutions of their own using their talents and creativity. This study proposes a theoretical approach to project-based service-learning and suggests six design components, namely, related curriculum, reflection, reciprocity, service and community engagement, evaluation and recognition, and creative problem solving. Based on the components, 20 design strategies are formulated. The exploration is aimed to provide design guides for professionals attempting to implement project-based service-learning in higher education.

초등학교 1학년과 2학년 수학교과서가 제공하는 평면도형의 학습기회에 대한 기호학적 분석 (A Semiotic Analysis of Opportunity to Learn about Plane Figures in Grade 1 and 2 Mathematics Textbooks)

  • 본 연구는 초등학교 1학년과 2학년 수학교과서가 제공하는 평면도형에 대한 학습기회를 기호학적 관점에서 분석한 결과를 보고한다. 2015 개정 수학과 교육과정에서 초등학교 1~2학년에 포함된 평면도형에 대한 학습은 학교에서 다루어지는 기하교육의 기초가 된다는 점에서 특히 중요하다. 수학학습은 의미의 문제와 관련되고 의미에 관한 활동은 기호 활동으로 볼 수 있다는 점에서 그리고 기호학적 분석은 의미에 대한 문제를 정교하게 기술하고 기회를 제공할 수 있다는 점에서 기호학의 관점과 도구를 채택하고, 사용한다. 교과서 활동이 요구하는 기호작용에 대한 분석을 통해 교과서 활동이 제공하는 학습기회의 의의를 드러내 기술할 수 있고, 겉으로 유사해 보이는 학습기회가 어떻게 다른지를 파악할 수 있음을 확인하였다. 분석 결과를 바탕으로, 1학년과 2학년 수학교과서에서 제공되는 학습기회 사이의 연계성에 대해서 논의하였다. 마지막으로 본 연구의 결론 및 시사점 그리고 후속연구를 제안하였다.

Collaboration in a Web-Based Learning Environment: Opportunities and Challenges

  • The purpose of this study was to examine how computer conferencing might facilitate collaborative learning for students to engage in meaningful discussion. The participants in this study consisted of the instructor and the students in a graduate level course. Different sources of evidence were used to triangulate the data: in-depth interviews, content analysis of transcripts of discussion, and other archival data including course syllabus, presentation materials, and lecture notes. Participants perceived web-based learning as collaborative process, providing opportunities to share the idea, respect and evaluate different perspectives, and co-construct new insights. Analysis of the data revealed several challenges related collaboration in a web-based learning environment: absence of a sense of community, technical problems, adaptability to different types of learner, and managing the discussion. The data also indicated that a variety of strategies were used to facilitate learning: building a sense of community, technical support, developing instructional methodologies, class size, and design of the content.

How Student Classroom Engagement Affects Students' Study Results in Mathematics Classroom

  • To improve students' classroom engagement is not only the demand of curriculum revolution, but also the reflection of learning democracy. Students' responses and thinking are the main manifestations of students' participation in classroom learning. To reduce the amount of questions and increase the opportunities and time for students to think, this study, by employing SPSS, makes attempts to analyze the data by using multivariate GLM analysis to explore the effects of students' responses and thinking on learning results. The results indicated the students learning effect will be promoted through reducing the quantity and increasing the quality of question and adding the thinking opportunities.

Using Facets of Effective Science Learning Environments to Examine Preservice Elementary Teachers' Observations of Their Clinical Experiences in Korea and the U.S.

  • This study examined the science learning environments experienced by Korean and U.S. preservice elementary science teachers during their 3-week clinical experience. Observational experiences of 97 Korean and 112 U.S preservice teachers were surveyed with an instrument that we developed for the study. Follow-up interviews provided a clearer picture of what preservice teachers observed and experienced in science classrooms during their clinical experiences. Korean preservice teachers experienced a variety of science teaching environments, whereas the U.S. preservice teachers reported limited opportunities to observe science teaching and learning in terms of 6 identified facets that we posed. Along with our interpretation of the contrast in findings, some of the challenges are discussed in providing preservice teachers with opportunities to observe, experience, and teach in effective science learning environments during the clinical experience.

디자인 사고 분석을 통한 외국인의 한국 언어 학습의 연구 (A Study on Foreigners' Korean Language Learning Experiences through Design Thinking Analysis)

  • 국어를 공부하는 외국인 학생들이 몇 년간 급격하게 증가하면서 한국어의 국제적인 지위가 올라가고 있다. 하지만 외국인 학생들의 입장에서는 한국어를 배우는 과정에 많은 어려움을 겪는 점이 드러나고 있다. 또한 이에 더해 한국 학생들과 외국인 학생들간의 이해관계가 어려워지는 점을 지적하는 연구가 나오고 있다. 에린 샌더의 디자인 연구 스파이럴을 통해서 이 논문은 한국에 있는 외국인 학생들의 한국어 교육경험을 조사했다. 또한 이 학생들의 한국어 학습에 대한 인식과 효과적인 요인들을 분석하였다. 결론적으로 본 연구는 디자인 연구를 통해 한국어 학습에 중요한 통찰을 결과로 도출했으며, 외국인 학생들이 한국어를 효과적으로 공부하는데 기여할 디자인 기회를 도출한 의의가 있다.

Learning High Mathematics on MathCad Base

  • Nowadays application of modem achievements of information technologies in science, engineering and education is usual phenomenon. Application of these technologies allows easily creating new methods of learning of mathematics. More of new methods of creation of multimedia electronic manuals on high mathematics are founded to application of multimedia and communication opportunities of the computer. But application only multimedia and communication opportunities of the computer at creation of multimedia electronic manuals on high mathematics is insufficient to elimination of 'gap' between training and studying high mathematics. So, we offer a new way of the decision of this problem: creation of a multimedia electronic manual on high mathematics with built-in a mathematical environment MathCad in the national language.
