Experimental Study on the Antidepressant Effect of Radix Curcumae (울금(鬱金)의 항우울 효과에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the protective effects of Radix Curcumae on the animal model of depression induced immobilization stress. Method : 1) Male rats were used for this experiment. The subject were divided into 4 groups(1. normal 2. saline solution administered during immobilization stress treatment 3. Radix Curcumae of l00mg/kg administered 4. Radix Curcumae of 400mg/kg administered). 2) Immobilization stress was treated for 1 hours on day. During 2 days of immobilization stress treatment, they were executed forced swimming test, passive avoidance test, elevated plus maze test. Corticosterone in blood were measured. Results : 1) In EPM test, stress group showed significantly increased anxiety, Radix Curcumae of 400mg/kg group showed significantly decreased anxiety. 2) In forced swimming test, Radix Curcumae of 400mg/kg group showed significantly decreased immobilization. 3) In passive avoidance test, stress group showed significantly decreased learning execution, Radix Curcumae groups showed significantly increased learning execution. 4) Stress group showed significantly increase in serum level of corticosterone, Radix Curcumae of 400mg/kg group showed significantly decreased serum level of corticosterone. Conclusion : These results suggest that Radix Curcumae is effective in the treatment of depression.

Differences in Psychopathology and Effectiveness of Individual Counselling According to Learning Environment of Agricultural Specialized College Students (농업계 특수전문대학 학생들의 학습 환경에 따른 정신병리 차이와 개인상담의 효과검증)

  • This study is aimed at researching on psychopathological characteristics of agriculture-specialized college students, in a specific educational environment, consulting some students who show maladjusted characteristics, verifying its effects and providing basic data for college life instructions. The complete survey MMPI was conducted for 676 freshmen and juniors attending K agriculture-specialized college located in Jeollabuk-do. To analyze the results, basic statistics, bivariate correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis were implemented. The results of this study are as follows; First, the level of overall clinical scale was lower than 50 points, standard point, and freshmen showed higher depression (D), hysteria (Hy) and psychasthenia (Pt) in general. Such results are different from the other study results. It is considered an anxiety in early stage, resulted from a living in a dormitory. For the juniors who came back from one-year practice, anxiety about employment seems little because they are already employed. Second, The effects of personal consultation for maladjusted students were proved (p<.01). The students who got consultation showed improvement effect from 'very bad condition' to 'considerable depression', which is low score. This study has a meaning in preventing from any accident, by screening maladjusted students who are supposed to learn in a specific situation, by relieving their symptoms through consultation and letting them concentrate on learning.

Effect of Saenggitang on Learning and Memory Ability in Mice

  • Objective : The effect Saenggitang (GT), which has been used for amnesia, in Oriental Medicine, on memory and learning ability, was investigated. Methods : Hot water extracts (HWE) of SGT were used for the studies. In passive avoidance performances (step through test), active avoidance performances (lever press test), Motor activity, pentobarbital-induced sleep, 20 and 50 mg/100g of SGT-HWE ameliorated the memory retrieval deficit induced by 40% ethanol. Results : The SGT-HWE did not affect the ambulatory activity of normal mice in normal condition. 20 and 50 mg/100g of SGT-HWE enhanced contextual fear memory, but not cued fear memory in a fear conditioning task, which requires the activation of the NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartase) receptor. SGT-HWE did not affect the motor activity measured by the titling type ambulometer test performed immediately and 24 hr after the administration. SGT-HWE prolonged the sleeping time induced by 50 mg/kg pentobarbital in mice and decreased SMA (spontaneous motor activity) in active avoidance performances (lever press test). Conclusion : These results indicate that the SGT-HWE have an improving effect on the memory retrieval disability induced by ethanol and may act as a stimulating factor for activating the NMDA receptor. and the SGT-HWE has a tranquilizing and anti-anxiety action.

South Korean nursing students' experiences of clinical practice in the newborn nursery and neonatal intensive care unit: A phenomenological study

  • Purpose: While clinical practice is crucial for nursing students to acquire the skills needed to provide professional, high-quality nursing care, further studies on improving undergraduate nursing programs are needed to provide a supportive clinical learning environment for student nurses. This study aimed to understand nursing students' clinical experiences in newborn nurseries and neonatal intensive care units and to provide basic data for the establishment of strategies to promote effective clinical education. Methods: Interviews were held with 15 nursing students at J University who had clinical practice experience in the newborn nursery and neonatal intensive care unit. The collected data were analyzed using the phenomenological analysis method developed by Colaizzi (1978). Results: The nursing students' experiences were grouped into four categories: "expectations for and anxiety about clinical practice", "acquisition of a wide range of knowledge regarding neonatal nursing", "challenges faced in clinical practice", and "experiencing interpersonal changes". Conclusion: The current neonatal practice nursing education system provides students with positive learning experiences. However, the lack of practice opportunities, insufficient instruction, and the theory-practice gap were identified as major issues hindering students' learning needs. These study results are expected to provide basic data for curriculum development to improve undergraduate nursing education.

  • COVID-19 has brought major changes to school education. Although it was attempted to guarantee students' right to learn through romote learning, the limitations of remote learning compared to face-to-face classes were clear. Nevertheless, the method of remote learning is undoubtedly a learning method that needs to be continuously developed in terms of being able to consider separated time and space and enabling learners to learn individually and autonomously. Therefore, in this study, real-time romote learning cases were analyzed at the elementary school stage, and problems in real-time remote classes were discovered and improved through teacher interviews. The problems with real-time remote classes in elementary school unit classes examined through examples are: First, that the proportion of teacher activity is high due to the anxiety of the unfamiliar environment of remote classes, and second, even though it is a real-time interactive class, it It was impossible to provide feedback. As a solution to this, it is necessary to consider the basic class steps (introduction-deployment-organization) and the use of class tools to provide appropriate communication and feedback was suggested.

Repeated Neonatal Propofol Administration Induces Sex-Dependent Long-Term Impairments on Spatial and Recognition Memory in Rats

  • Propofol is an anesthetic agent that gained wide use because of its fast induction of anesthesia and rapid recovery post-anesthesia. However, previous studies have reported immediate neurodegeneration and long-term impairment in spatial learning and memory from repeated neonatal propofol administration in animals. Yet, none of those studies has explored the sex-specific long-term physical changes and behavioral alterations such as social (sociability and social preference), emotional (anxiety), and other cognitive functions (spatial working, recognition, and avoidance memory) after neonatal propofol treatment. Seven-day-old Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats underwent repeated daily intraperitoneal injections of propofol or normal saline for 7 days. Starting fourth week of age and onwards, rats were subjected to behavior tests including open-field, elevated-plus-maze, Y-maze, 3-chamber social interaction, novel-object-recognition, passive-avoidance, and rotarod. Rats were sacrificed at 9 weeks and hippocampal protein expressions were analyzed by Western blot. Results revealed long-term body weight gain alterations in the growing rats and sex-specific impairments in spatial (female) and recognition (male) learning and memory paradigms. A markedly decreased expression of hippocampal NMDA receptor GluN1 subunit in female- and increased expression of AMPA GluR1 subunit protein expression in male rats were also found. Other aspects of behaviors such as locomotor activity and coordination, anxiety, sociability, social preference and avoidance learning and memory were not generally affected. These results suggest that neonatal repeated propofol administration disrupts normal growth and some aspects of neurodevelopment in rats in a sex-specific manner.

Investigation of Elementary and Secondary Students' Interest in Science (초.중등 학생들의 과학 흥미도 조사)

  • Students' affective attitude not only influences their achievement in a meaningful way but is also an important educational goal in its own right. This research investigated how students' interest in science varies among elementary, middle, and high-school students based on surveys and reviews of previous research results. We analyzed students learning attitude in terms of (1) interest in and enjoyment of science, (2) instrumental motivation in science, (3) science learning anxiety, and (4) self-concept in science. Major findings are that students showed more negative attitudes in intrinsic motivation, instrumental motivation, value perception of science, and confidence in science as they move in to a higher school level. According to the students' explanation, science classes get boring in higher grades because of difficult contents, lack of experiments and activities, and the teachers' monotonous explanations. Based on the results, recommendations on how to improve students' attitudes towards science are suggested. First of all, we need to secure more science instructional hours in the school curriculum than the 7th national curriculum to implement improved science teaching and learning methods.

  • Training using metacognition in a learning environment is one of the topics that have been continuously studied since the 1990s. Metacognition can be broadly divided into declarative metacognitive knowledge and procedural metacognitive knowledge (metacognitive skills). Accordingly, metacognitive training has also been studied focusing on one of the two metacognitive knowledge. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of metacognitive skills training in the context of mathematical problem solving. Specifically, the learner performed the prediction of problem difficulty, estimation of problem solving time, and prediction of accuracy in the context of a test in which problems of various difficulty levels were mixed within a set, and this was repeated 5 times over a total of 5 weeks. As a result of the analysis, we found that there was a significant difference in all three predictive indicators after training than before training, and we revealed that training can help learners in problem-solving strategies. In addition, we analyzed whether there was a difference between the experiment group and control group in the degree of test anxiety and math achievement. As a result, we found that learners in the experiment group showed less emotional and relationship anxiety at 5 weeks. This effect through metacognitive skill training is expected to help learners improve learning strategies needed for test situations.

The phenomenological study on the Experience of the Stop-out of Korean Medicine Students (한의대생의 휴학경험에 관한 현상학적 연구)

  • Objectives : This study was to identify the stop-out experiences of Korean Medicine Students(K.M.S.). The stop-out is defined as a withdrawal temporarily from enrollment at a university. Methods : Data was collected through in-depth individual interviews from 2013 to 2016 and analyzed with Colaizzi's phenomenological methodology. The participants were interviewed once or twice, for 30minutes to 50minutes per interview. Results : Ten theme-clusters were identified from 21 themes. These theme-clusters were divided to 4 divisions as when they made the decision for the stop-out, during their stop-out period, when they went back to school and the meaning of their stop-out. 'A difficult situation to continue the study', 'Uncertainty about their decision and anxiety of the future' are 2 theme-clusters for when they made the decision for the stop-out, 'Conflict and anxiety', 'Novel and free time', 'Improving family relationship and finding new relationship' are 3 theme-clusters for during their stop-out period, 'Anxiety for the returning to school', 'New relationship and sense of relief' are 2 theme-clusters for when they went back to school, and 'Making a present for me', 'An opportunity for the emotional growth', 'Recovery of learning will' are 3 theme-clusters for the meaning of their stop-out that they gave to it. Conclusions : The stop - out of K.M.S. began at the hope that they want to take the lead for their lives. And they would find themselves more mature after the experience of their stop-out. This result could be a basic reference for the counselling of the faculty working with K.M.S.

  • Cycling that transform human energy into mechanical energy is one of the man-machine systems out of sports fields. Benchmarking means "improving ourselves by learning from others', therefore benchmarking toward dominant cyclist is necessary on field. The goals of this study were to provide important factors on multi-disciplines (kinematics, physiology, power, psychology) for a tailored-training program that is suitable to individual characteristics. Two cyclists participated in this study and gave consent to the experimental procedure. One was dominant cyclist (years: 21 yrs, height: 177 cm, mass: 70 kg), and the other was non-dominant cyclist (years: 21, height: 176, mass: 70). Kinematic data were recorded using six infrared cameras (240Hz) and QTM (software). Physiological data (VO2max, AT) were acquired according to graded exercising test with cycle ergometer and power with Wingate test used by Bar-Or et. al (1977) and to evaluate muscle function with Cybex. Psychological data were collected with competitive state anxiety inventory (CSAI-2) that was devised by Martens et. al (1990) and athletes' self-management questionnaire (ASMQ) of Huh (2003). It appears that the dominant's CV of ankle joint angle was higher than non-dominant's CV and dominant's pedaling pattern was consistent in biomechanics domain, which the dominant's values for all factors ware higher than non-dominant's values in physical, and physiological domain, and their values between cognitive anxiety and somatic anxiety were contrary to each other in psychology. Further research on multi-disciplines may lead to the development of tailored-optimal training programs applicable with key factors to enhance athletic performance by means of research including athlete, coach and parents.
