Effects of Mulching Materials on Growth of Allium tuberosum Rottler and Weed Control

  • This study was carried out to elucidate the effect of mulching materials on the growth of Chinese chive (Allium tuberusum Rottler) and weed control. Chinese chive was grown under five mulching materials, pine leaf, oak leaf, rice straw, rice hull and sawdust, at the Experimental Farm of Chungbuk National University from June 20, 2009 to September 30, 2009. Amaranthus mangostunus, Digitaria sanguinalis, Portuclaca. oleracea, Echinochioa crus-galli var. frumetacea and Setaria viridis were dominant weeds. Both pine and oak leaves were significantly effective mulching materials in terms of weed control indices in both nursery and field. Soil moisture contents were 1.2~3.7% higher in mulching, especially in oak leaf mulching. Mulching with pine leaf significantly increased plant height, sheath length, leaf length, bulb-, root- and leaf-weights and yield of Chinese chive, but there were no significant differences among the other mulching materials although better than those in non-mulching.

Response of Leaf Water Potential and Growth Characteristics to Irrigation Treatment in Soybean

  • Soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] are frequently exposed to unfavorable environments during growing seasons and water is the most important factor limiting for the production system. The purpose of this study was to determine the leaf water potential changes by irrigation, and to evaluate the relationships of leaf water potential, growth and yield in soybeans. Three soybean cultivars, Hwangkeumkong, Shinpaldalkong 2, and Pungsannamulkong, were planted in growth chamber and field with irrigated treatments. Leaf water potential of three soybean cultivars was positively correlated with leaf water content during vegetative and reproductive growth stages in growth chamber and field experiments. Leaf water potentials measured for three soybean cultivars under growth chamber were higher than those of under field conditions. Higher leaf water potential with irrigated plots under field was observed compared to conventional plots during reproductive growth stages. Leaf water potentials of three soybean cultivars were continually decreased during reproductive growth stages under field and there was no significant difference among them. Number of leaves, leaf water content, pod dry weight, number of seeds and seed dry weight with irrigated plots were higher than those of conventional plots. The results of this study suggested that leaf water potential could be used as an important growth indicator during the growing season of soybean plants.

  • 겨울철 오이 시설재배에서 태양열 시스템을 이용한 지중가온의 효과를 구명하고자 지중 40 cm에 15 mm의 PPC파이프를 130 cm이랑 에 4열 매설한 후 지중 20 cm의 지온을 $22~23^{\circ}C$로 설정한 후 1996년 11월 7일부터 1997년 1월 30일까지 일정한 온도로 유지, 관리하여 무가온구와 가온구의 지상부, 지하부 및 수량을 비교시험한 결과는 다음과 같다 1) 지중가온에 의한 지온확보는 가온구는 15~20 cm에서 $22^{\circ}C$ 정도의 평균온도를 확보할 수 있었고, 무가온구는 평균 $17~18^{\circ}C$ 정도였다 2) 정식 30일 정도에서 초기생육은 가온구가 초장, 경경, 엽수, 엽면적 등 모두 증가하였으며 특히 초장 27%, 엽수 51%, 엽면적은 150% 정도 증가하였다. 또 지상부 평균 증가율도 관행대비 가온구 증가율이 117% 정도였다. 3) 가온구의 지하부 뿌리의 생장성이 관행구에 비하여 평균 56% 정도 증가하였다 4) 과수의 수량면에서도 총과수가 무가온구 313개, 가온구 614개로 가온구가 196% 정도 증수되었다.

구기(枸杞)의 신초예취(新稍刈取)가 경엽(莖葉) 및 과실수량(果實收量)에 미치는 영향(影響) (Study on the growth characteristics and production of leaf, stem and fruit in Lycium chinense)

  • 구기(枸杞) 신조예취(新梢刈取)가 경엽(莖葉) 및 과실(果實) 수량(收量)에 미치는 영향(影響)을 구명(究明)하고자 1991년부터 1992년 까지 청양종(靑陽種)을 공시(供試)하여 시험(試驗)을 수행(遂行)하였던 바 그 결과(結果)를 요약(要約)하면 다음과 같다. 1. 구기자(枸杞子) 생육시기별(生育時期別) 지상부(地上部) 건물중(乾物重)(잎, 줄기) 변화(變化)를 보면 7월(月) 중순(中旬)에 최대치(最大値)를 기점(起點)으로 후기(後期)부터 감소(減少)하고 지상부(地上部) 건물중(乾物重) 중(中) 구기엽(枸杞葉) 6월(月) 하순(下旬)에 최대치(最大値)에 이르다가 急激(급격)히 감소(減少)하였으며 구기경(枸杞莖)은 생육초기(生育初期)부터 완만히 증가(增加)하였다. 2. 착과수(着果數)는 주지(主枝), 2차분지(次分枝)보다 1차분지(次分枝)가 많아 1차(次) 분지(分枝)를 많이 발생(發生)토록 하는 전지(剪枝) 방법(方法)이 연구(硏究)되어야 할 것으로 사료(思料)되었다. 3. 구기엽(枸杞葉)은 5, 6, 7월(月)에 채취(採取)하는 것이 신초장(新梢長), 분지수(分枝數)가 많았고 건조비율(乾燥比率)이 낮아서 품질(品質)이 좋을것으로 사료(思料)되었다. 4. 구기엽(枸杞葉) 채취회수(採取回數)가 늘어날수록 구기자(枸杞子)(과실(果實))수량(收量)은 감수(減收)되었고 구기엽(枸杞葉) 건물수량(乾物收量)은 증가(增加)하였으나 구기자(枸杞子)(과실(果實)) 생산수량(生産收量)을 고려할시(時)는 구기엽(枸杞葉) 채취(採取) 회수(回數)를 3회(回)이내 까지 채취(採取)하는 것이 유리(有利)할 것으로 사료(思料)되었다.

향끽미품종담배의 식혈간 거리와 식혈당 주수가 수량 및 품질에 미치는 영향 (A Multiple Planting in a Hole for Producing an Aromatic Tobacco Variety, Sohyang(Nicotiana tabacum L.))

  • This study was carried out to investigate the influence of distance of planting holes (51, 45, and 40 cm) and number of plants per a hole(4, 5, 6 plants) on agronomic characteristics, yield, and quality of an aromatic tobacco, Sohyang. The results are as follows: 1. Relative light intensity increased by widening the distance of holes. 2. Leaf area per a plant or per a leaf, and leaf length and width increased by widening the distance of holes and decreased by increasing the number of plants per a hole. But L. A. 1. increased by increasing the number of plants per a hole. Leaf shape index (Leaf length/Leaf width) showed little differences among treatments. 3. Dry weight of leaf, root, and stem per a plant decreased by increasing the number of plants per a hole. 4. Total nitrogen decreased by increasing number of plants per a hole and in the case of narrow distance of holes, but nicotine, reducing sugar, ether-extract and ash showed little differences. 5. Yield per 10a decreased by widening the distance of holes. 6. Quality(price per kg) was improved by increasing the number of plants per a hole at the Plot of 51m distance of holes. But there was no variation at the Plot of 45cm. And quality was decreased at the plot of 40cm distance of holes by increasing the number of Plants per a hole. 7. Price per 10a was highest in the plot of which plant spacing was $90\times$40cm and the number of plants per a hole was 4 (11112 plant/10a).

Application of Bacterial Endophytes to Control Bacterial Leaf Blight Disease and Promote Rice Growth

  • Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) causes bacterial leaf blight (BLB) disease in rice (Oryza sativa L.) and it is among the most destructive pathogen responsible for severe yield losses. Potential bacterial biocontrol agents (BCAs) with plant growth promotion (PGP) abilities can be applied to better manage the BLB disease and increase crop yield, compared to current conventional practices. Thus, this study aimed to isolate, screen, and identify potential BCAs with PGP abilities. Isolation of the BCAs was performed from internal plant tissues and rhizosphere soil of healthy and Xoo-infected rice. A total of 18 bacterial strains were successfully screened for in vitro antagonistic ability against Xoo, siderophore production and PGP potentials. Among the bacterial strains, 3 endophytes, Bacillus sp. strain USML8, Bacillus sp. strain USML9, and Bacillus sp. strain USMR1 which were isolated from diseased plants harbored the BCA traits and significantly reduced leaf blight severity of rice. Simultaneously, the endophytic BCAs also possessed plant growth promoting traits and were able to enhance rice growth. Application of the selected endophytes (BCAs-PGP) at the early growth stage of rice exhibited potential in suppressing BLB disease and promoting rice growth.

상수 각형질 상호간의 표현형상관과 유전상관 (Phenotypic and Genotypic Correlations between Some Characters of Mulberry Trees)

  • 뽕나무의 정엽중 즉 수량을 예측하고 수량과 제형질과의 관계를 알고자 우리나라 상수주요품종 4품종을 재료로 상수의 8개형질상호간의 유전상관, 표현형상관 그리고 환경상관을 계산한바 그 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1. 각형질상호간의 표현형공분산, 유전공분산 그리고 환경공분산을 계산한 바 제1표와 같이 표현형공분산은 유전공분산의 값과 근사하나 다소 높고 환경공분산의 값은 그 변동이 심하다. 2. 각형질상호간의 유전상관, 표현형관계 그리고 환경상관 등은 계산한바 제2표와 같이 유전상관은 표현형상관보다 그 값이 높고 지조장과 주당지수간, 주당지수와 지총중간에 1이상의 이상치가 보였다. 3. 지조직경과 제형질상호간에는 어느 경우에 있어서도 상관의 정도가 낮고, 정엽중 즉 수량과 제형질간의 상관관계를 본바 수량과 지조직경간에는 그값이 낮으나 기타 제형질은 수량과 높은 상관관계를 보였다. 뽕나무의 제형질중 예취전에 측정할 수 있는 지조장, 절간수, 지조직경, 주당지수의 4개형질이 수량의 예측이나 선발대상형질로서 중요한 형질이나 본실험의 결과 지조직경은 수량과 상관의 정도가 낮고, 주당지수는 전보의 결과에서 유전력이 낮았으므로 지금까지의 결과로는 지조장과 절간수가 더욱 중요한 형질로서 취급하여야 할 것으로 믿으며 이들 형질들과 수량과의 직접효과와 간접효과를 구명하여 보는 것이 앞으로 남은 한 과제가 될 수 있을 것으로 믿는다.

Effects of Nitrogen Fertilization on Leaf Yield and Pyranocurmarine Accumulation in Angelica gigas Nakai

  • Angelica gigas Nakai is one of the most widely used herbal medicines and is known to have many pharmaceutical effects including an anti-oxidant, anti-cancer etc. This study was carried out to investigate an effect of fertilization on leaf yield, production of dry-matter and accumulation of pyranocurmarine compounds such as decursin (DE) and decursinol angelate (DA) in Angelica gigas Nakai. Effect of fertilization was determined from response surface regression equation composing of 2 by 3 factorial arrangement of urea, sodium dihydrogen phosphate and potassium chloride. Yield of leaf in Angelica gigas Nakai significantly increased until 100 days after transplanting. Production of leaf also tended to increase with increasing nitrogen fertilization. Model of regression equation showed that leaf production depended upon nitrogen ($Pr>{\mid}t{\mid}$ : 0.087, 0.256 and 0.079). Also, statistical results between nitrogen application level and production of dry-matter showed significant relationship (p<0.05) and contents of dry-matter was highest in 10 kg 10a-1 treatment on 24 Sep. Active compound isolated and purified from leaf and root of Angelica gigas Nakai was identified as DE and DA by gas chromatograph-mass spectrophotometry (GC-MS). Concentration of DA as prevalent compound in leaf was highest on 20 Aug. but decreased on 24 Sep. Amount of DE and DA accumulated in Angelica gigas Nakai significantly increased with growth stages and nitrogen level. The result of our investigation imply that nitrogen fertilization is important factor for production of leaf and accumulation of pyranocurmarine in Angelica gigas Nakai as a medicinal/food materials.

  • Effect of several nitrogen fertilizer sources on the chlorine absorption by the burley tobacco plants was investigated under the field and pot condition. The nitrogen sources included compound fertilize.(containing 3.9% NH4-N and 6.1% NH2-N), (NH4)2SO4, NaNO3. (NH2)2CO and NH4NO3. The chlorine content of leaf during growing stage was high in (NH4)2SO4 plot , and the differences among nitrogen sources was remarkable at maximum growing stage. The chlorine content of cured leaf was high in (NH4)2SO4 plot. When the (NH4)2SO4 was applied, the total alkaloid content of cured leaf was increased and the color of cured leaf became undesirable with the increment of leaf chlorine. The yield, quality and value of cured leaf were high in NaNO3 plot , while low in (NH4)2SO4 plot.

  • Comparing and analysing the productivity and the main ingredients of persimmon leaves by cultivars were conducted to improve the quality and productivity of the per-simmon leaf tea. As a result of the survey, Dungsi was decidedly good in growth co-ndition of survival rate, stem diameter and the number of shoots etc. Also , DUngsi had the highest leaf productivity of 567 leaves and the leaf weight of 1.98 kg per one plant after three years of planting . On accounts of productivity, ingredient analysis and panel test etc. we collectively through that Dungsi was the best cutltivar for the persimmon leaf tea.
