Atractylodes japonica and Atractylodes macrocephala belongs to Atractylodes genus and theirs roots are used as 'Baek-chul'(White atractylodes rhizome) in Korea Pharmacopoeia. 'Baek-chul' widely used in traditional herbal remedies in Asia. Concurrently, the 'Baek-chul' demand enormously increased in the market due to the growing interest in favoring health benefits but it is depend on import from China. Thus we conducted breeding research to solve the problems associated with domestically cultivated 'Baek-chul' such as low productivity and low disease tolence. We crossed A. japonica (female parent) and A. macrocephala (male parent) in the greenhouse in September 2000. the next season 119 crossed line seeds were collected and germinated in the green house. Among them we selected the good lines in the same season. then conducted replicated yield trials (RYT) in 2014 to local adaptability test (LAT) in 2015-2016. The results showed that the 'AJM16' line has beneficial charactersitcs like, increased plant height, large rhizome diameter, narrow leaf width compared with a 'Sang-chul' (check cultivar) and varied flower color from A. japonica (female parent). The line 'AJM16' was also exhibited decreased anthracnose symptoms(Colletotrichum gloeosporides Penz.). Simultaneously the root yield of AJM16 was 2,409 kg per are, which was increased 130% higher yield compared to 'Sang-chul' (check cultivar) at three various regions from 2015 to 2016. Therefore, we named AJM16 as new cultivar 'Man-chul'. According the results, we have developed a new Atractylodes spp. hybrid cultivar 'Macn-chul' with high yielding and disease tolerance by National Institute of Horticulture and Herbal Science, RDA, in 2016.

Seed size traits are controlled by multiple genes in crops and determine grain yield, quality and appearance. However, the molecular mechanisms controlling the size of plant seeds remain unclear. We performed functional analysis of BrPATL4 encoding Sec14-like protein to determine the genetic architecture of seed size, shape and their association analyses. We used 60 $T_3$ transgenic rice lines to evaluate seed length, seed width and seed height as seed size traits, and the ratios of these values as seed shape traits. Pleiotropic effects on general architecture included small seed size, erect panicles, decreased grain weight, reduced plant height and increased sterility, which are common to other mutants deficient in gibberellic acid (GA) biosynthesis. To test whether BrPATL4 overexpression is deleterious for GA signal transduction, we compared the relative expression of GA related gene and the growth rate of second leaf sheath supplied with exogenous $GA_3$. Overexpression of BrPATL4 did not affect GA biosynthesis or signaling pathway, with the same response shown under GA treatment compared to the wild type. However, the causal genes for the small seed phenotype (D1, SRS1, and SRS5) and the erection of panicles showed significantly decreased levels in mRNA accumulation compared to the wild type. These results suggest that the overexpression of BrPATL4 can control seed size through the suppression of those genes related to seed size regulation. Although the molecular function of BrPATL4 is not clear for small seed and erect panicles of BrPALT4 overexpression line, this study provides some clues about the genetic engineering of rice seed architecture.
Chrysanthemum indicum L. (Gamgug) has been examined to study their flowering habits, yields and bioactive compounds under different planting densities and mowing dates. The planting density experiment revealed a significantly increasing stem diameter, number of flowers and branches with decreasing plant density in the $100\;cm{\times}30\;cm$ and $130\;cm{\times}30\;cm$ treatments as compared to $70\;cm{\times}30\;cm$ treatments, but not plant height, leaf and flower width. On the other hand, the mowing date experiment showed that growth characteristics of plants were similar to the control plants (not mowing) and June 20 treatment, but July 20 treatments had significantly smaller than the control. The weights (g $plant^{-1}$) of dry flowers were affected by the planting density and mowing date. The flower yield of $586\;kg\;ha^{-1}$ obtained at $100\;cm{\times}30\;cm$ density was 11% and 22% higher than that of $120\;cm{\times}30\;cm$ and $70\;cm{\times}30\;cm$ treatments, respectively. The yield of dry flowers in the control and June 20 mowing date ranged $495-508\;kg\;ha^{-1}$, which is 40-42% higher than the yield in the July 20 treatments. The amount of essential oil (g $plant^{-1}$) in medically valuable flowerheads of C. indicum L. was statistically different between mowing dates but not among planting densities. The study showed that planting density and the mowing date could increase yields of flowerheads. An optimum planting density of $100\;cm{\times}30\;cm$ and mowing date of on or before June 20 is recommended for C. indicum L.
This study was carried out to investigate the physicochemical characteristics of 3-year-old ginseng (for Samgyetang product) cultured by various seeding density in direct-sowing culture. Ginsengs were cultured by the seeding density, 275, 300, 330 352 and 396 seeds per Kan, $180{\times}90cm$ area. Survived rate (82.1%) were the highest in plot of 352 seeds sowed, length and leaf width were high in plot of 300 and 352 seeds. Root yield grain was increased with increase of the seeding density in direct-sowing culture except 352 seeds sowed. Average root weight and diameter were the highest in plot of 352 seeds sowed, 31.6 g and 18.4 mm, respectively. Crude saponin and each ginsenosides content were the highest in plot of 275 seeds sowed. Rg1 content was decreased, Rc and Rb2 content were increased with increase of the seeding density. Total soluble sugar content was the highest in plot of 330 seeds sowed and the lowest in plot of 396 seeds sowed, and oligo- and disaccaride content were high in plot of 330 and 352 seeds sowed. Reological characteristics of ginsengs cultivated according to various seeding density, hardness and springness were high and maximum fracture force was low with decrease of the seeding quantity.
The essential oil free needles, which were left after distillation of essential oil from various coniferous needles, were fermented with food waste organics in order to use as compost and roughage. Microorganisms for the fermentation were selected from domestic sources such as swine compost, bark compost, and kimchi, etc, and consisted of aerothermophilic bacteria and actinomycetes. The weight reduction ratio of food waste organics treated with the microorganisms was 90% after 30 days treatment, and the fermentation temperature was kept at approximately $45^{\circ}C$. The compost process was really slow due to chemical compounds derived from needles, and it finally took 60 days for complete compost. When 10% of needle compost was mixed with soil for radish growth, the growth indicators such as leaf length and root weight were increased compared with control, while root weight, root width, and root length were inhibited on the addition of 20% needle compost. The nutrient value and digestibility ratio of various essential oil free needles as roughage for ruminant animals were evaluated. The ratio of crude protein for essential oil free needles from Korean pine(Pinus koraiensis) was 10.02%, which was higher than those of rice straw(5.48%) and corn(9.00%). The digestibility ratios of essential oil free needles from Sawara cypress(Chamaecwaris pislfera), Korean pine(Pinus koraiensis), and Japanese Red Pine(Pinus densiflora) was 53%, 34%, 34%, respectively, indicating that those essential oil free needles were considered as excellent roughage.
The objective of this study was to improve the recycling rate of coal ash fly, industrial waste. This study was conducted to analyze the physico-chemical properties of \"CellCaSi\" and clarify the effects on the growth of Kentucky bluegrass(Poa pratensis L.) and creeping bentgrass(Agrostis paulstris Huds \"Penncross\") and the chemical properties of soil, which was cellular calcium silicate reproduced by coal ash fly. A field assay was carried out in Young-Pyong Golf Course. The results were as follows. 1. The main chemical composition of CellCaSi was $SiO_2$(45~55%) and CaO(25~35), which was 70~90% of total weight. CellCaSi showed pH 8~9. Bulk density of CellCaSi was 0.35~0.45g/㎤. Water content of CellCaSi was 52.5~67.5%. 2. In the applied plots, leaf width, grass density per $1\textrm{cm}^2$, rhizome number and length per plant, and root number per plant of Kentucky bluegrass(Poa pratensis L.) and creeping bentgrass(Agrostis paulstris Huds \"Penncross\") showed increasing tendency compared with the control. The application of CellCaSi increased the growth of turfgrasses. Their visual quality on hardness, grass shoot density per $1\textrm{cm}^2$ and root growth was very good. And, their visual quality on rhizome growth was good. 3. After the application of CellCaSi, pH, CEC, Ex-cation of the applied soil showed increasing tendency with the little range, $SiO_2$content increasing tendency considerably, and organic matter content decreasing tendency compared with the control.ncy compared with the control.
We report an unrecorded species of the genus Sorbaria (Rosaceae) in Korea, namely Sorbaria kirilowii (Regel & Tiling) Maxim. This plant was discovered both on Pocheon-si, Naecheon-myeon and Yeoju-gun, Buknae-myeon in Gyeonggi Province. It is distinguishable from Sorbaria sorbifolia (L.) A. Braun var. stellipila Maxim. by characteristics such as presence of hair on leaf and rachis, morphology of inflorescence, length and width of petal, shape of sepal, number and length of stamens, presence of hair upon and size of follicles. This taxon was given the Korean common name 'Jom-swi-ttang-na-mu' based on the small size of floral characters.

This study investigated the effect of planting density on growth and yield of elephant garlic. Three planting densities of 20 × 20, 20 × 15, and 20 × 10 ㎝ were tested with the furrow width fixed at 120 ㎝ for the evaluation of elephant galic growth and yield. The average date of emergence was middle and late November, requiring about 30 days for the all emergence. For the flowering, 221 days after sowing were required in all the treatments. Plant height and leaf growth were not significantly different according to the planting density. Flower stalk was shorter when planting density was narrow. The L/D ratio was decreased to form oval shape when planting density was narrow. The yield of elephant garlic was 1,811 ㎏ /10a in planting density 20 × 20 ㎝, 2,375 ㎏/10a in 20 × 15 ㎝, and 2,838 ㎏/10a in 20 × 10 ㎝ plot. The marketable garlic ratio was highest as 1,593 ㎏/10a in planting density of 20 × 15 ㎝.

The research was carried out to define the morphological and growth characteristics of Poa pratensis L.(Kentucky bluegrass) 'Sewon' in native to Korea. Poa pratensis 'Sewon' was collected at the terrace land on the river in Guiman-ri, Cheongcheon-myeon, Goesan-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do on May 5, 1995. The collected Poa pratensis 'Sewon' was grown under non-mowing naturally growing condition. The morphological characteristics of Poa pratensis 'Sewon' are as follows. : The height of plant was 21.6cm but was increased to 33cm at the flowering time. The height of first node from the base was 5.0cm and the length and width of leaf were 9.6cm and 4.1cm, respectively. The length of inflorecences was 37.8cm and the length of a spike was 7.3cm. Based on these morphological characteristics, Poa pratensis 'Sewon' was defined to dwarf~medium and coarse texture type Kennturky bluegrass. 1 to 9 scale of visual quality, visual color and visual density were measured. Poa pratensis 'Sewon' showed best turf qualities among native Kentucky bluegrasses. In spring and fall growing season, Poa pratensis 'Sewon' were measured to be excellent performances for turf qulities similar to foreign excellent quality cultivars such as Midnight, Nuglade and Brilliant Kentucky bluegrasses. But turf quality of Poa pratensis 'Sewon' decreased by plant disease according to temperature increase in summe compared to foreign excellent quality cultivars. So, Poa pratensis 'Sewon' should be improved of disease tolerent quality by incessant breeding work in order to compete foreign excellent quality cultivars.
