  • Leaf spot disease of Kalanchoe (Kalanchoe blossfeldiana) occurred at the farmer's vinly house in Gangseo-gu, Busan Metropolitan City, Korea, 2006. The diseased plants with typical symptom were collected and the casual agent were isolated. Its mycological characteristics and pathogenicity were examined. The results were as follows. The typical symptoms of the disease appeared as small brownish or dark brown spot on both sides of the leaves. The spots tended to develop from lower leaves. The spots gradually enlarged into conspicuous necrotic lesions 1-5 mm in diameter. Colonies of the causal fungus formed on potato dextrose agar were velvety, gray or grayish brown in color, Conidia were cylindrical or obclavate to oblong in shape, brown in color, $24{\sim}65\;{\times}\;12{\sim}23\;{\mu}m$ in size and had 1-4 transverse septa, The optimum temperature for growth of the fungus was about $25-30^{\circ}C$. Conidiophores were brown in color, $32{\sim}135\;{\times}\;4{\sim}8\;{\mu}m$ in size and had 1-7 transverse septa. The fungus was identified as Stemphylium lycopersici (Enjoji) Yamamoto based on its symptom and mycological characteristics. This is the first report of leaf spot of Kalanchoe caused by S. lycopersici in Korea.

  • Various kinds of leaf spots and blights were found in kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa) orchards on 2006 in Korea. Disease incidences were quite variable between open-field and rain-proof shelter. Rate of diseased leaves was recorded as about 70% at open-field orchards in late season but use of rain-proof vinyl shelters alleviated the disease incidences by 20%. Angular leaf spots appeared at early infection stage on June and several other symptoms were also recognized as the disease developed afterward. On September, brown leaf blights were the most frequent, followed by grayish brown ring spots, silvering gray leaf blights, zonate leaf blights, dark brown ring spots and angular leaf spots at open-field orchards. Four fungal species were frequently isolated from the disease symptoms. Phomopsis sp. was the most predominant fungus associated with the leaf spot and blight symptoms on kiwifruit, followed by Glomerella cingulata, Alternaria alternata and Pestalo-tiopsis sp. Phomopsis sp. was commonly isolated from angular leaf spots, silvering gray leaf blights, and zonate brown leaf blights. G. cingulata, A. alternata and Pestalotiopsis sp. were isolated from grayish brown ring spots (anthracnose), brown ring spots and zonate dark brown leaf blights. Typical symptoms appeared on the wounded and unwounded leaves, which were inoculated by each of Phomopsis sp., G. cingulata, and Pestalotiopsis sp., but A. alternata caused symptoms only on the wounded leaves.

  • The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of application wide plastic shelter (WPS) in the 'Campbell Early' grape. WPS was developed 30cm wider than standard plastic shelter (SPS; 210cm). Under the plastic shelter, the average daily temperature was $2{\sim}3^{\circ}C$ higher than ambient temperature, but WPS treatment was $0.5{\sim}1^{\circ}C$ higher than SPS treatment. However, relative humidity 15~20% lower than ambient and shown different result between two treatments annually. The occurrence of brown leaf spot disease caused by Pseudocecospora vitis on the vineyard decreased 55.6% (2012) and 17.2% (2013) under WPS than SPS. Grape bunches collected two harvest seasons (2012, 2013), were analyzed fruit quality (total soluble solid; TSS, titratable acidity; TA, berry weight, berry size). In 2012, grapes had no differences in the quality of two treatments, but in 2013, significantly increase $0.4^{\circ}Bx$ of TSS and decrease 0.8% of TA on the WPS than SPS. It suggests that the application WPS reduced the incidence of brown leaf spot disease annually, and then affect to the fruit quality.

  • Leaf spot diseases were found on safflower (Carthamus thinctorius) leaf in several fields located in Euisong-Gun, Gyengbuk province in Korea. The infected leaf rate of the diseases in surveyed area were different each years from 2001 to 2003 such as about 5%, 10%, and 30%, repectively. The typicla symptoms of diseases appeared first as small, light brown spots on leaves. And then spot turn dark brown and magnified. And yellow decoloration zone appeared surrounding dark brown spots. Mycological characteristics of Alternaria carthami, isolated from safflower mature leaf spot were dark gray colonies, conidiophores simple erect, septated, 40~80 ${\mu}m$ length; conidia solitary, straight, body size fo without beak length 40~100${\mu}m$, 10~15${\mu}m$ thick, Number of transverse septa 4~10 and longitudinal septa 4~7 ; beak with 2~4 septa, 30~65${\mu}m$ length. And A. alternata, isolated from old leaf were gray~dark gray colonies, conidiophores simple or branched, 20~110 ${\mu}m$ length; conidia long chaines, short conical or cylindrical beak, 2~6 transverse septa and several longitudinal septa, body size of without beak length 30~60 ${\mu}m$, 10~20 ${\mu}m$ thick ; beak length 5~35 ${\mu}m$. These are the first report on the leaf spot of safflower caused by Alternaria carthami, A alternata in Korea.

  • Leaf spot disease on black chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) was observed at several locations in Korea during 2014-2015. Leaf spots were distinct, scattered over the leaf surface and along the leaf border, subcircular to irregular and brown surrounded by a distinct dark color, and were expanded and coalesced into irregularly shaped lesions. Severely infected leaves became dry and fell off eventually. The causative agent was identified as Pseudocercospora pyricola. Morphological observations and phylogenetic analyses of multiple genes, including internal transcribed spacer, translation elongation factor 1-alpha, actin, and the large subunit ribosomal DNA were conducted. The pathogenicity test was conducted twice yielding similar results, fulfilling Koch's postulates. To our knowledge, this is the first report on P. pyricola infection of A. melanocarpa globally.

  • In early August of 2011, following a prolonged period of cool and moist weather, several trees of boxelder maple (Acer negundo) planted in Mt. Soyo located in Dongducheon, Korea, were found to be heavily damaged by premature defoliation with zonate leaf spot symptoms. Numerous number of cone-shaped, white sporophores (conidia) were observed on lesions of the abaxial leaf surface. The morphological characteristics of conidia are of typical Cristulariella moricola, which was supported by analyzing sequences of internal transcribed spacer region of ribosomal DNA. Pathogenicity of the fungus was proved by artificial inoculation in the condition of relative humidity 100% and $18{\pm}2^{\circ}C$. This is the first report of the occurrence of zonate leaf spot caused by infection of C. moricola on A. negundo in Korea.

  • Leaf spot and blight disease was observed on two-year-old seedlings of Dendropanax morbifera (Korean name: Hwangchil tree) during July of 2008 in Jindo Island, Korea. Symptoms included yellow-brown to dark brown irregularly enlarged spots frequently located along the veins of leaves. The lesions were often surrounded by chlorotic haloes. Severe leaf blight and subsequent defoliation occurred when conditions favored disease outbreak. The causal organism of the disease was identified as Alternaria panax based on morphological characteristics and sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer region of rDNA. A. panax isolates induced leaf spots and blight symptoms not only on D. morbifera but also on the other members of Araliaceae tested. This is the first report of foliar blight caused by A. panax on D. morbifera.

  • Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) is an important fruit and cash crop in Sultanate of Oman, occupying nearly 60% of the total cultivated area. However, leaf spots caused by Mycosphaerella tassiana, Alternaria spp., and Dreshcleri sp. have become a threat to date palm's cultivation in recent years. In this study, a field experiment was conducted to find out a suitable chemical spray program to control the disease. A prophylactic spray schedule with mancozeb (Dithane M45), copper oxychloride (Champion), and mancozeb+copper (Trimiltox) effectively controlled the disease when applied at a time when the disease severity index (DSI) was low, ranging from 0 to 1.68. Meanwhile, the disease did not decrease, but instead increased gradually, when the fungicide combination was applied when DSI was high, ranging from 1.78 to 5.37. It was concluded that fungicides should be applied at the early stage or before disease initiation in order to control the disease effectively.
