  • This experiment was carried out in order to study the effect of cutting time on the regrowth and the feed composition in native reed. The first growth crops cut in June, July and October and the ratoon crops after cutting cut in October. The samples measured the plant height, leaf blade & sheath-stem ratio, grass yield, feed composition and invitro dry matter digestibility. The results are summarized as follow: 1. As the result of the grass productivity and nutrient yield, it was indicated that suitable cutting time of the native reed was from middle of June to middle of July. The yield of dry matter and in vitro digestible dry matter were much more in the first crops than in the ratoon crops in both of non-fertilizer and fertilizer(P < 0.01), and more in the fertilizer than in non-fertilizer in both of the first and ratoon crops(P < 0.01). 2. The contents of feed composition in native reed of non-fertilizer and fertilizer showed different trends between the first and ratoon crops. In case of the first crops, the contents of C. protein and C.fat were higher in fertilizer than in non-fertilizer and the contents of C. fiber, NDF and ADF were lower in fertilizer than in non-fertilizer, but these contents were not significantly different between non-fertilizer and fertilizer. In the ratoon crops, these contents between non-fertilizer and fertilizer were shown in a opposite manner to those in the first crops.

  • This study was carried out to investigate growth characteristics and propagation methods of Clerodendron trichotomum for landscape uses. The results are obtained as follows: In the first place, Korean native C. trichotomum was printed in the "Enumeration of plants in Chosun" in 1937 by Tae Hyun Chung. C. trichotomum is a shrub with round shape. This is noted for its late summer flowers, showy fruit and malodorous foliage. White flowers in long-peduncled cymes bloom in the upper leaf axils from late summer into fall. Flowers are followed by small bright blue fruits, each subtended by a fleshy red calyx. C. trichotomum showed high seed germination rate and greater shoot length in plug box than in normal seeding bed. The rooting rate of C. trichotomum according to cutting date was highest on July 7. The optimum date for cutting was on July 7~10 when the shoots were more hardened. Soil acidity ranged from pH 4.58 to 5.52. The most effective method for rooting of C. trichotomum was treatment with 1,000 ppm IBA on July 7 cuttings, which showed rooting rate of over 90%. Korean native C. trichotomum was successfully propagated through soft cutting and seed.

  • An efficient micropropagation was established by using axillary bud explants from two-year-old tree(Echinosphorea koreensis Nakai), which has been known as a rare and endangered species. Among various basal media tested, DKW medium was shown to be the best for axillary shoot elongation. The addition of both BA and TDZ to the medium induced 6 to 10 shoots per explant during eight weeks of culture, without showing any abnormal morphology at the shoot proliferation stage. However, high concentration of TDZ(>0.05 mg/L) appeared to cause hyperhydration on either leaf or shoot at the later developmental stage. Approximately 20% of shoots produced roots by the addition of 1.0 mg/L NAA but not by IBA($0.2{\sim}1.0$ mg/L). Ex vitro micro-cuttings were better source for root induction; up to 58.6% of the micro-cuttings rooted when 100 mg/L IBA was applied to the soil(vermiculite). More than 90% of plantlets with roots were successfully acclimatized and grew normally in the field. Therefore, we suggest that this endangered tree species can be effectively micropropagated by axillary bud culture system developed in this study.

  • The objectives of this study were to select early, late, and abundant flowering trees of black locust from domesticated and introduced cultivars, and prediction of flowering period by calculation of accumulated temperature in spring. Four cultivars (Debreceni-2, Pusztavacs, Jaszkiseri, and Rozsaszin AC) from Hungary and a cultivar from Beijing, China, were introduced, propagated by seed and planted in a seed orchard. For domesticated black locust, 63 cultivars from 10 locations throughout the country were selected and propagated by root cutting. Criteria for selection of domesticated cultivars were abundant flowering, long flowering period, or abundant nectar production with, if possible, straight stems. Accumulated temperature was calculated from data of a nearby weather station by accumulating daily maximum temperature minus 5 degree Celsius from January 1 up to the date reaching 880 degrees. Daily mean temperature was also used to calculate accumulated temperature up to the date reaching 450 degrees. The percentages of two-year and three-year-old flowering trees propagated by root cutting were higher than that of trees propagated by seeds, while four-year-old trees all flowered regardless of propagation methods. Among the domesticated cultivars, all the cultivars from Ganghwa showed abundant flowering with highest nectar production of 6.5 ul per flower, which was 100% more than other domesticated cultivars and 50% more than Debreceni-2 cultivar with highest nectar production among the introduced cultivars from Hungary. At the end of the eight years of observations, two trees of Debreceni-2 cultivars and a tree from Beijing, China were selected for early flowering trees which flowered 2 to 3 days earlier than average trees, while a tree of Debeceni-2 and three trees from Bejing were selected for late flowering trees which flowered 2 to 3 days later than average trees. It is possible to extend the flowering period of black locust by 4 to 6 days by planting early and late flowering cultivars together. Abundant flowering trees were unable to be selected due to severe damages by leaf gall midges which killed many trees and reduced the crown size of the remaining trees in the seed orchard, and which were first found in Korea in 2001 and now damaging most of the black locust forests in Korea. The prediction of flowering period by accumulated temperature indicated that black locust flowered to a peak when accumulated daily maximum temperature reached 880 degrees Celsius, and when daily mean temperature reached 450 degrees.

  • The growth of trees planted through transplantation rapidly decreases immediately after planting due to extreme disturbances such as root cutting and crown damage. Although the growth rate is recovered as time elapses, the time required to restore the original growth varies by species. Therefore, it is necessary to set an appropriate tree management period for survival after transplantation by analyzing each species' annual growth change. In this study, we analyzed the growth amount of deciduous broad-leaf species planted in the area where the riparian ecological belt was formed and proposed the management period based on the results. Slowed growth immediately after planting is a common phenomenon due to root cutting and pruning, the pre-works performed to increase tree survival rate during the transplantation process. Afterward, the original growth rate is recovered as time passes, but the time required may vary depending on the species and planting environment. Most of the trees showed a rapid decrease in growth immediately after transplantation. After that, although it is different for each species, most of them showed a gradual recovery from 2 years onwards. The analysis of the growth rate by tree species confirmed that it took 2 to 4 years, depending on the tree species, to recover the growth level before transplantation after a rapid decrease in growth immediately after transplantation. The results suggest that improving the defect rate of planted trees is necessary to meet the project objectives: ecological restoration and pollutant reduction. It requires setting a tree management period of at least two years and creating an appropriate base environment.

  • Since summer growth depression of forage crops limits hay production in Korea, it is important to exploit natural resources which are suitable as forage. In the preliminary experiment it was found that Panicum dichotomiflorum Michx. might be utilized as soiling and hay crop. Effects of seed stratificaion, planting date and number of harvestings on fresh and dry yields of Panicum dichotomiflorum Michx. were investigated in 1993 and 1994. Stratification of seed promoted emergence, while seed age decreased emergence. Although fresh yield was closely related with number of plants estabilished per unit area, effect of number of plants per unit area on yield was less at the later stage of growth. Higher cutting height decreased fresh and dry yield at th early stage, but final yields were not influenced by cutting height. Panicum dichotomiflorum Michx. could be harvested 3~4 times beginning 40~50 days after planting and fresh and dry yields were 9~10 tons /10a and 1.4~1.8 tons /10a, respectively. Fresh and dry yields were significantly influenced by growth duration or accumulated temperature between cuttings. Leaf blade ratio was higher at earlier planting and / or harvesting. Contens of crude protein, crude fat and crude ash were 16.32, 24.01 and 11.59%, respectively.

  • The aim of this work was to investigate how the mulberry shoots grew well when the mulberry branches were cut down, in hight, 1/3, $\frac{1}{2}$ and 2/3 of them, respectively, just before the Spring budding. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The rate of un-sprouted buds decreased sharply down as much as half of the control if the mulberry branches were cut off. The treatment, 1/3, was best one of various cut down sizes and the un-sprouted buds concentrated on the lower parts of the branches. 2. Even though the branches were cut down, at first it seemed flat to accelerate the sprouting of buds, but rather to have a tendency to become late. The speed of leaf growth, however, became faster after the sprouting. It took 7~9 days from the beginning of buddings to the 5th full grown leaf, and.7 days for the shortest one in the treatment, 2/3, when compared with 16 days of the control. 3. If the branches were cut down, the growth of the new sprouts was accelerated. For 45 days (on 5th of May to on 10th of June), therefore. the shoots had grown up to 1.6~2.5 times of the control, 34cm long. The shoots of which the branches were cut down at 2/3 of them were longest (83cm). Furthermore. the speed of shoot growth of cut-down branches was faster than that of the control. 4. In the increased rate of the number of the mulberry leaves, there was not significant difference between the control and the treatments. 5. The total amount of shoot growth showed considerably much more in the treatments than in the control. The successing growing shoots of treatment, 2/3 were little in a number but longest per one shoot in mean shoot length. 6. It seems to be much available that we may cut down branches at 2/3 of them in order to get the scions for the cutting as soon as possible.

  • This study was conducted to determine the minimal processing characteristics of four vegetables (brown mustard, kale, red beet and red lettuce) for wrapping (Ssam). Prior to evaluation, the vegetable leaves were cut, washed, and packaged. The texture, weight loss, browning index, pH, gas concentrations ($O_2$ and $CO_2$), microbial growth, and organoleptic qualities of the leaves were assessed at $10^{\circ}C$ for 7 days. The cutting strength of red beet was significantly different among leaves. The initial springiness of brown mustard was the lowest (0.98%). The weight loss varied between 0.24 to 4.77%, pH ranged from 6.00 to 6.95, and browning index increased to 0.95 during storage. Changes of gas composition were lower in cut leaf than whole leaf. Aerobic bacteria (4.9-8.0 log CFU/g), yeast (not detected), mold (-3.5 log CFU/g), and total coliforms (5.0-8.0 log CFU/g) were assessed in the samples. Thus, overall quality of kale and red beet leaves with minimal processing showed satisfactory results when stored for 7 days.

  • The uptake ratio of supplying $P^{32}$ labelled double superphosphate and the hastening efficiency of the uptake by addition of magnesium sulfate to the fertilizer were studied on the ${\times}Populus $ albaglandulosa planted with 0/1 cutting in 1975. The results are summerized as follows. 1. Average 13% of supplying double superphosphate was absorbed into ${\times}Populus$ albaglandulosa planted on the reddish heavy clay soil in Institute of Forest Genetics. 2. The accumulation of absorbed magnesium was more amount in leaf than in stem. 3. The uptake ratio of supplying double superphosphate was able to increase up to 16%~33% by the addition of magnesium sulfate to the fertilizer. 4. It might be possible to increase the tree growth following the acceleration of photosynthesis due to the increasing amount of magnesium known to be a component of chlorophyll in leaf as well as to hasten the efficiency of uptake of phosphorus by the addition of magnesium to double superphosphate.

  • Field experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of plant growth regulator (PGR); IAA, GA, Kinetin to regrowth of sorghum and pearlmillet according to variety and plant growth stage. Kinetin application after cut increased tiller number and decreased dry weight of regrowth, but its application on sorghum stubble in water stress increased tiller number and leaf elongation rate, consequently increased regrowth dry weight. GA application reduced tiller production in both species, but tiller formation in pearlmillet was decreased more than in sorghum by promoting leaf elongation of old tiller. Nonstructural carbohydrate (NSC) of stubble during regrowth was consumed less at anthesis than at stem elongation stage because of senescence of tiller primordia. GA treatment reduced NSC content more than other PGR in both plant species, by consuming reserve NSC and stimulating rapid elongation of old tiller after cut. Dry matter increase during regrowth had high correlation with tiller number and tiller elongation a week after cut, while it did not have any correlation with NSC at cutting stage or with consumption of NSC during regrowth. Therefore, regrowth in sorghum and pearmillet must depend upon activity of tiller primordia more than upon amount of reserved NSC.
