This experiment was carried out for estimating genetic parameters, such as heritabilities, the phenotrpic and genotypic correlations of major agronomic characters with 64 cultivars in wanggol. Heritabilities of leaf length, number of leaf, stem length, stem diameter, number of stem and dry weight of medulla were higher, but that of dry weight of cortical were relatively lower. The genotypic correlation coefficients between stem length and dry weight of medulla, and between stem length and dry weight of cortical showed highly positive correlation, and stem length, stem diameter and dry weight of medulla were significantly correlated with dry weight of cortical, those characters gave high direct effect as same level in path-coefficient analysis.
The objective of this study was to develop allometric equations and stem density and biomass expansion factor for Pinus rigida stands in Muju region. The coefficient of determination of the allometric equations in independent variable (dbh) and dependent variable (biomass) was more than 95% with the exception of leaf (78%) and branch(83%). The total biomass was $102Mg\;ha^{-1}$ ($65.9 Mg\;ha^{-1}$ from stem wood, $9.5Mg\;ha^{-1}$ from stem bark, $19.6Mg\;ha^{-1}$ from branch and $7.0Mg\;ha^{-1}$ from leaf). Biomass distribution ratio of Pinus rigida stands showed the highest in stem wood with 64.6%, followed by the branch with 19.2%, stem bark with 9.3% and the leaf with 6.9%. The results indicated that the stem density $(g/cm^{3})$ and the biomass expansion factor were 0.453 and 1.344, respectively.
The reduced ratio of red:far-red (R:FR) light acts as a measure of the proximity of competitors and plants can detect the potentially competing neighbor plants by perceiving reflected R:FR signals and initiate the response of “shade avoidance” before actual shading occurs. The phytochrome system is responsible for monitoring the changes in the R:FR and initiating the shade avoidance response. The response to low R:FR ratio was studied in a white aspen Populus alba clone ‘Bolleana’ using two filter systems: a clear plastic filter system that allows a R:FR ratio less than 1.0 to pass from adjacent border plant reflection; and a special commercial plastic that blocks FR light and creates a R:FR ratio above 3.0. The reduced R:FR signals enhanced the stem elongation in response to competition at the expense of relative stem diameter growth. Trees grown inside clear chambers were 27 % taller than trees grown inside the FR-blocking filter chambers. Stem taper of clear chamber trees was 16% less than the FR-blocking filter trees. Low R:FR also induced 22% more stem dry weight and 13% greater petiole length per leaf compared to the FR-blocking filter trees. There were no statistically significant differences in leaf area, leaf number increment, and total dry weight between the two light filter treatments.
To develop a new functional material, leaf, stem and root of Panax gjnseng were analyzed in their antioxidant activities. Root and leaf of ginseng collected from 3 regions, exhibited inhibition activity as $45.2{\sim}54.3%\;and\;90.1{\sim}96.5%$ on peroxidation of low density lipoprotein and linoleic acid, respectively. Scavenging activities of stem, leaf and root of ginseng on superoxide anion radical were $35.6{\sim}76.1%,\;60.1{\sim}69.3%\;and\;-5.6{\sim}20.1%$, respectively. Total phenol contents of leaf, stem and root of ginseng were $147{\sim}200\;mg%,\;110{\sim}153\;mg%\;and\;61{\sim}86\;mg%$ respectively as tannic acid equivalent.
Inflorescence, stem, and leaf samples of lettuce grown in a greenhouse in spring and autumn seasons were assayed for sesquiterpene lactones (SLs) content by high performance liquid chromatography. The concentrations of SLs were significantly higher in the inflorescences followed by upper leaf and stem compared to the other plant parts in most of the samples. SLs content (sum of lactucin and lactucopicrin) in various tissues of lettuce cultivated in spring season varied from 5.7 to 22.5 fold ranging from $27.4{\mu}g/g$ dry weight (DW) in the upper stem (cultivar "PI 176588") as the lowest to as high as $2,292.0{\mu}g/g$ DW in the inflorescence (cultivar "709849-1"). During autumn cultivation, the concentration of SLs varied from 2.0 to 14.4 fold ranging from as low of $32.4{\mu}g/g$ DW in the lower stem (cultivar "PI176588") to as high of $838.0{\mu}g/g$ DW in the upper leaf (cultivar "Dambaesangchu"). Higher lactucin (1.2 to 5.6 fold) and lactucopicrin (1.1 to 3.9 fold) concentration was observed during spring compared to autumn cultivation in most of the samples. SLs content in various organs of lettuce increases from the basal plant part going upwards. As lactucin and lactucopicrin are the major SLs which affects the sensory property of lettuce, their quantitative variation in the lettuce cultivars is useful for breeding new varieties with better consumer acceptance.
This experiment was carried out to examine the effect of various functional materials such as bioceramic podwers, crushed shells and elvanites supplemented to the each substrate on the seedlings growth of cucumber, watermelon and tomato. The seedlings were grown in pots filled with substrates of bioceramic podwers, crushed shell and elvanites. The growth of cucumber seedlings in terms of plant height, stem diameter, leaf width, leaf area, plant fresh and dry weight was promoted by adding the bioceramic. powder (1 to 2g/kg), crushed shells (20 to 80g/kg) or elvanites (20 to 80g/kg). Watermelon seedlings in terms of plant height, number of leaves and leaf area were greater than those of the control by adding bioceramics (1 to 2g/kg). Plant height was also promoted by the adding of bioceramic power from 16 days after treatment. But leaf area was increased from 8 days after treatment, while stem diameter was not affected. Watermelon seedlings were also influenced by adding curshed shells (20 to 80g/kg) and elvanites (20 to 40g/kg) into each substrate. The growth of characteristics of tomato seedlings were promoted by adding 1 to 3g/kg of bioceramics, 10 to 80g/kg of crushed shell or 20 to 40g/kg of elvanites, respectively. Especially, root growth was greatly influenced by bioceramic powder, whereas the shoot growth(leaves and stem) was stimulated by crushed shells and elvanites suppemented into substrate.
Tinospora crispa (L.) is a medicinal plant traditionally used to treat various ailments including diabetes. The stem has been widely studied for its antidiabetic properties, however the antidiabetic potential of its leaves has not been explored. This study investigates the antidiabetic properties of methanolic T. crispa stem and leaves extracts on alloxan-induced diabetic rats. The stems and leaves were extracted using Soxhlet extraction with methanol as solvent. Crude extracts were administered at 500 mg/kg body weight (BW) (high dose) and 250 mg/kg BW (low dose) via oral route to alloxan induced diabetic rats. T. crispa stem and leaves extracts was found to significantly reduce blood glucose following a twelve-week treatment period. The highest mean difference in blood glucose level was exhibited by animals in the high dose treated stem and low dose leaf extracts. Both extracts showed approximately 75% percentage recovery from hyperglycaemia. The highest regenerative capacity was observed in animals treated with the low dose leaf extract.
Codonopsis lanceolata (Campanulaceae) has been used in traditional medicines, as its roots contain several kinds of 3,28-bidesmosidic triterpenoid saponin with high medicinal values. In this study, we induced hairy root-derived transgenic plants of C. lanceolata and analyzed triterpenoid saponins from the leaf, stem and root. Transgenic plants were regenerated from the hairy roots via somatic embryogenesis. The saponins are lancemaside A, B and E, foetidissimoside A, and aster saponin Hb. Transgenic plants contained richer triterpenoids saponin than wild-type plants. Major saponin lancemaside A was the most abundant saponin in the stem from transgenic-plant, $4.76mg{\cdot}1^{-1}dry$ stem. These results suggest that transgenic plants of C. lanceolata could be used as medicinal materials for the production of triterpene saponins.
This study was to examine the accumulated concentration of lead in the organ of Arabidopsis thaliana grown in the soil added three different concentrations of lead. The accumulated concentrations of lead in the stem of plant grown in the soil added official standard concentration of lead of pollutant exhaust notified by the Ministry of Environment (1 mg/l), concentration ten times higher than the official standard concentration (10 mg/l) and concentration fifty times higher (50 mg/l) were similar to the rate of increase between three different concentrations, and increased average 24% compared with normal plant stem. The accumulated concentrations of lead in the leaf of plant grown in the soil added three different concentrations of lead were increased average 57% compared with normal plant leaf. And accumulated concentrations of lead in the leaf was no significant difference according to increase of lead concentration added in the soil as stem, the rate of increase was similar to between three different concentrations. The accumulated concentrations of lead in the root of plant grown in the soil added official standard concentration of lead of pollutant exhaust and concentration ten times higher were increased average 114% compared with normal plant root, but increased about 861% in the concentration fifty times higher than the official standard concentration. This result contrast with the data of stem and leaf. The accumulated concentration of lead in the plant body of Arabidopsis thaliana was increased according to increase of lead concentration added in the soil. Especially, the accumulated concentration of lead in the plant body grown in the concentration fifty times higher than the official standard concentration was increased about 2.6 times than normal plant. These results show that lead contaminated within the soil was more accumulated in the root than the stem or leaf, and accumulated concentrations of lead in the stem and leaf were not increased in proportion to the concentration of lead in the soil, but very increased in proportion to the concentration in the root.
In germinating pea, contents of enodgenous polyamine in the leaf and stem were determined, and protein content, peroxidase activity and pattern of isozymes were examined in the leaf treated with polyamines. During growth of the pea for 14 days in light condition, the polyamines in leaf and stem showed the highest level at the 5th day, and were decreased rapidly at the 7th day, kept almost constant level since then. The putrescine level was relatively higher than those of spermidine and spermine, and cadaverine was also detected. On the other hand, in the leaf treated with spermine (0.01 mM) protein content increased about 250% than that of the control, the peroxidase activity increased ore than 100% in spermine of 0.01 mM and 0.1 mM. In treating with putrescine of 0.1 mM the pattern of peroxidase isozyme appeared 4 new cathodic bands (pI 4.8, 5.6, 5.9 and 6.8) compared with the control, the clear cathodic bands (pI 5.6, 5.9, 6.4 and 6.6) were also observed in spermine of 0.1 mM. These results suggest that polyamines were important factor in the differentiation of pea at the early stage of germination.
