  • Development of Bracon hebetor Say parasitizing Indianmeal moth (Plodia interpunctella (Hubner) was studied at five temperature conditions (17, 20, 25, 28 and 32$\pm$0.5$^{\circ}C$) under a photoperiod of 16 : 8 (L : D). Developmental period (mean$\pm$s.e.) of B. hebetor from egg to eclosion decreased from 28.6$\pm$0.50 to 9.3 $\pm$0.09 days and 28.1 $\pm$0.51 to 9.2$\pm$0.09 days for female and male, respectively, as the temperature increased from 17 to $32^{\circ}C$. The combination model provided a good description of the relationship between temperature and development. The low temperature thresholds were estimated to be 14.0, 12.8, 15.1$^{\circ}C$ for development of egg, larva and pupa. The thresholds for normal development (outside of the boundary layer of the development) were 14.0, 17.5, $15.1^{\circ}C$ for egg, larva and pupa, respectively, indicating that the larval stage is more sensitive to the low temperature than the other stages. The results suggested that the present B. hebetor population could be another ecological race adapting to the seasonal temperature conditions of this area.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the phenomenon of attachment and spreading of the cultured rat calvarial cell inoculated on their surface of different kinds of biodegradable membrane which had been used on tissue regeneration on periodontal defects by using scanning electron microscope. In this experiment 30 Sprague-Dawley male rats (mean BW 150gm) were used to harvest abundant number of cell in the short period. The rats were sacrificed by decapitatioan to obtain the calvaria for bone cell culture. Calvarial cells were cultured with Dulbecco's Modified Essential Medium contained with 10% Fetal Bovine Serum under the conventional conditions. Biodegradable barrier membrane were collected with collagen type, and were divided into 3 different kind of surface such as scattered, polarized and fine-net type as their surface texture. Microcover plate which usually used for cell culture was used as control for smooth surface. All the membrane were seeded with cultured calvarial cell on their surface. The number of cell inoculated on the membrane were $1{\times}10^6$ Cells/ml. After the culture as designed time, all the membrane were washed with 0.1 M Phosphate Buffered saline and fuxed with 2.5% Glutaraldehyde. And all specimen were treated with $OsO_4$, and Tannic acid before drying the cell for coating the cell with gold. Scanning Electron Microscope was used to observation. The following results were obtained. I. During the whole period of experiment, the phenomenon of cell attachment and spreading were revealed similar pattern to compare with smooth surface culture plate and ordinary culture dish. 2. The shape of cell attachment and spreading on the surface of barrier membrane were observed no remarked difference pattern between smooth surface culture plate and ordinary culture dish. 3. The cytoplasmic process of cultured calvaria cell extent to the deep portion of barrier membrane like as their own proper shape. 4. There were no remarkable relationships between the degree of cultured cell spreading and surface structure of barrier membrane. 5. Slight starified layer of cultured calvaria cell were observed on the scattered type of resorbable membrane, Conclusively, this study thus suggest that cultured bone cell inoculated onto the biodegradable barrier membrane may have an important role of carrier for many cell which could be used as new tissue regeneration, and those tissue engeering technique may become an new method in the approach to the repair of bone defects.

  • The $SiO_2$ films were prepared by ECR(electron cyclotron resonance) plasma diffusion method, Deal-Grove model and Wolters-Zegers-van Duynhoven model were used to estimate the oxidation rate which was correlated with surface morphology for different orientation of Si(100) and Si(111). It was seen the $SiO_2$ thickness increased linearly with initial oxidation time. But oxidation rate slightly decrease with oxidation time. It was also shown that the oxidation process was controlled by the diffusion of the reactive species through the oxide layer rather than by the reaction rate at the oxide interface. The similar time dependency has been observed for thermal and plasma oxidation of silicon. From D-G model and W-Z model, the oxidation rate of Si(111) was 1.13 times greater than Si(100) because Si(111) had higher diffusion and reaction rate, these models more closely fits the experimental data. The $SiO_2$ surface roughness was found to be uniform at experimental conditions without etching although oxidation rate was increased, and to be nonuniform due to etching at experimental condition with higher microwave power and closer substrate distance.

  • Background: Previously, stingless bee (Trigona spp.) products from East Kalimantan, Indonesia, were successfully screened for in vitro antiproliferative activity against human cancer derived cell lines. It was established that propolis from T. incisa presented the highest in vitro cytotoxicity against the SW620 colon cancer cell line (6% cell survival in $20{\mu}g/mL$). Materials and Methods: Propolis from T. incisa was extracted with methanol and further partitioned with n-hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol. The in vitro cytotoxicity of the extracts was assessed by the MTT assay against human colon (SW620), liver (Hep-G2), gastric (KATO-III), lung (Chago) and breast (BT474) cancer derived cell lines. The active fractions were further enriched by silica gel quick column, absorption and size exclusion chromatography. The purity of each fraction was checked by thin layer chromatography. Cytotoxicity in BT-474 cells induced by cardanol compared to doxorubicin were evaluated by MTT assay, induction of cell cycle arrest and cell death by flow cytometric analysis of propidium iodide and annexin-V stained cells. Results: A cardol isomer was found to be the major compound in one active fraction (F45) of T. incisa propolis, with a cytotoxicity against the SW620 ($IC_{50}$ of $4.51{\pm}0.76{\mu}g/mL$), KATO-III (IC50 of $6.06{\pm}0.39{\mu}g/mL$), Hep-G2 ($IC_{50}$ of $0.71{\pm}0.22{\mu}g/mL$), Chago I ($IC_{50}$ of $0.81{\pm}0.18{\mu}g/mL$) and BT474 (IC50 of $4.28{\pm}0.14{\mu}g/mL$) cell lines. Early apoptosis (programmed cell death) of SW620 cells was induced by the cardol containing F45 fraction at the $IC_{50}$ and $IC_{80}$ concentrations, respectively, within 2-6 h of incubation. In addition, the F45 fraction induced cell cycle arrest at the G1 subphase. Conclusions: Indonesian stingless bee (T. incisa) propolis had moderately potent in vitro anticancer activity on human cancer derived cell lines. Cardol or 5-pentadecyl resorcinol was identified as a major active compound and induced apoptosis in SW620 cells in an early period (${\leq}6h$) and cell cycle arrest at the G1 subphase. Thus, cardol is a potential candidate for cancer chemotherapy.

  • A sequence of earthquakes with the main shock $M_L$ 5.8 occurred on September 12 2016 in the Gyeongju area. The main shock was the largest earthquakes in the southern part of the Korean peninsula since the instrumental seismic observation began in the peninsula in 1905 and clearly demonstrated that the Yangsan fault is seismically active. The mean focal depth of the foreshock, main shock, and aftershock of the Gyeongju earthquakes estimated by the crustal model of single layer of the Korean peninsula without the Conrad discontinuity turns out to be 12.9 km, which is 2.8 km lower than that estimated based on the IASP91 reference model with the Conrad discontinuity. The distribution of the historical and instrumental earthquakes in the Gyeongju area indicates that the Yangsan fault system comprising the main Yangsan fault and its subsidiary faults is a large fracture zone. The epicenters of the Gyeongju earthquakes show that a few faults of the Yangsan fault system are involved in the release of the strain energy accumulated in the area. That the major earthquakes of Gyeongju earthquakes occurred not on the surface but below 10 km depth suggests the necessity of the study of the distribution of deep active faults of the Yangsan fault system. The magnitude of maximum earthquake of the Gyeongju area estimated based on the earthquake data of the area turns out to be 7.3. The recurrence intervals of the earthquakes over magnitudes 5.0, 6.0 and 7.0 based on the earthquake data since 1978, which is the most complete data in the peninsula, are estimated as 80, 670, and 5,900 years, respectively. The September 2016 Gyeongju earthquakes are basically intraplate earthquakes not related to the Great East Japan earthquake of March 11 2011 which is interplate earthquake.

  • Hydroxyapatite was used as implant materials, because it has a good biocompatibility and is similar to human bone. However it is not expected to have a high strength as implant materials because of a low fracture strength after sintering of HAp. Alumina ($\alpha$-alumina) shows a stable chemical properties and high strength in physiological environments. Thus it was tried to use a HAp coatings on Alumina substrate as implant materials. In this study, HAp was coated on Alumina substrate by lon Beam Assisted Deposition(IBAD). Then Ag was impregnated on HAp coating layer, which showed antimicrobial effects. To carry out the ion exchange of $Ag^+$ with $Ca^{2+}$ in HAp on the surface, HAp coated alumina substrate was immersed in 20ppm, 100ppm $AgNO_3$ solution at room temperature for 48 hours. Antimicrobial test was studied by using bacteria, which normally caused periprosthetic infections. The follwing bacteria was used in antimicrobial test. Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa (gram negative) and staphylococcus epidermidis (gram positive). Ag impregnated HAp shows very good antimicrobial effects against these bacteria. The surface structure of sample, which was treated in $AgNO_3$ solution was studied by SEM, XRD. Ag release curve was studied in Simulated Body Fluid (SBF) solution.

  • Objectives: This study was designed to evaluate the filtration efficiencies and pressure drops of five commercial cloth masks (4 plate type, 1 cup type) in comparison to the performance of a class 1 disposable respirator (reference respirator). A further objective was to evaluate the effects of the number of layers and wash treatment independently on filtration efficiencies and pressure drops. Methods: Polydisperse NaCl aerosols were generated in an aerosol chamber and their concentrations were measured by an optical particle counter (OPC) in the size range of $0.3{\sim}10{\mu}m$ (five channels). Results: The filtration efficiencies of the five cloth masks and the reference respirator were D: 9.5%, C: 18.5%, E: 23.6%, A: 28.5%, B: 29.7% and R: 91.1%, respectively, and the pressure drops through them were C, D: 0.8 Pa, E: 1.7 Pa, B: 6.4 Pa, A: 42.7 Pa and R: 19.3 Pa, respectively. The filtration efficiencies of the cloth masks and reference respirator were below the class 1 respirator criterion (${\geq}94.0%$) of the Ministry of Employment and Labor (MOEL) and Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS). The pressure drops satisfied the class 1 respirator criterion (${\leq}70Pa$) of MOEL and MFDS. When the cloth masks were folded into two and four layers, the filtration efficiencies of cloth masks A, B, C, D (plate type) increased 1.7-4.6 times, and 2.3-6.8 times, respectively, compared to the efficiencies of the same products in a single layer. Pressure drops increased as the number of layers was increased. The filtration efficiency of cloth mask E with a liner was 1.3 times higher than that of the same mask without a liner, and the pressure drop was lower in the no-liner configuration. After a single washing, the filtration efficiencies of all the cloth mask products decreased 1.04-4.0 times compared to those of the same products intact. For the cloth masks C and E, their filtration efficiencies were significantly decreased after washing (p<0.05). The pressure drops of all cloth masks were 1.2-2.0 times lower after washing. Conclusions: The filtration efficiencies of the five cloth masks were below 30% and did not improve greatly by increasing the number of layers. After a single washing, their performances decreased. Considering the above and other issues identified with cloth masks, such as poor fit and stretched fibers through use, people should not expect protection against particulate matters from the cloth masks on the market.

  • This study is mainly focused on micellar effect of cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide(CTABr) solution including alkylbenzimidazole(R-BI) on dephosphorylation of isopropyl-4-nitrophenylphosphinate(IPNPIN) in carbonate buffer(pH 10.7). The reactions of IPNPIN with R-$BI^{\ominus}$ are strongly catalyzed by the micelles of CTABr. Dephosphorylation of IPNPIN is accelerated by $BI^{\ominus}$ ion in $10^{-2}$ M carbonate buffer(pH 10.7) of $4{\times}10^{-3}$ M CTABr solution up to 89 times as compared with the reaction in carbonate buffer by no benzimidazole(BI) solution of $4{\times}10^{-3}$ M CTABr. The value of pseudo first order rate constant($k_{\Psi}$) of the reaction in CTABr solution reached a maximum rate constant increasing micelle concentration. Such rate maxima are typical of micellar catalyzed bimolecular reactions. The reaction mediated by R-$BI^{\ominus}$ in micellar solutions are obviously slower than those by $BI^{\ominus}$, and the reaction rate were decreased with increase of lengths of alkyl groups. It seems due to steric effect of alkyl groups of R-$BI^{\ominus}$ in Stern layer of micellar solution. The surfactant reagent, CTABr, strongly catalyzes the reaction of IPNPIN with R-BI and its anion(R-$BI^{\ominus}$) in carbonate buffer(pH 10.7). For example, $4{\times}10^{-3}$ M CTABr in $1{\times}10^{-4}$ M BI solution increase the rate constant($k_{\Psi}=98.5{\times}10^{-3}\;sec^{-1}$) of the dephosphorylation by a factor ca.25, when compared with reaction($k_{\Psi}=3.9{\times}10^{-4}\;sec^{-1}$) in $1{\times}10^{-4}$ M BI solution(without CTABr). And no CTABr solution, in $1{\times}10^{-4}$ M BI solution increase the rate constant($k_{\Psi}=3.9{\times}10^{-4}\;sec^{-1}$) of the dephosphorylation by a factor ca.39, when compared with reaction ($k_{\Psi}=1.0{\times}10^{-5}\;sec^{-1}$) in water solution(without BI). This predicts that the reactivities of R-$BI^{\ominus}$ in the micellar pseudophase are much smaller than that of $BI^{\ominus}$. Due to the hydrophobicity and steric effect of alkyl group substituents, these groups would penetrate into the core of the micelle for stabilization by van der Waals interaction with long alkyl groups of CTABr.

  • HTTP is one of the most widely used protocols of the WWW. Currently it uses TCP as the transport layer protocol to provide reliability. The HTTP uses separate TCP connection for each file request and adds unnecessary head-of-line blocking overhead for the file retrieval. The web application is short sized and affected by the increased handover latency of TCP in wireless environment. SCTP has attractive features such as multi-streaming and multi-homing. SCTP's multi-streaming and multi-homing avoid head-of-line blocking problem of TCP and reduce handover latency of TCP in wired and wireless environment. Mean response time is the important measure in most web application. In this paper, we present the comparison of mean response time between HTTP over SCTP with that of HTTP over TCP in wired and wireless environments using NS-2 simulator. We measured mean response time for varying packet loss rate, bandwidth, RTT, and the number of web objects in wired environment and mean response time and packet loss rate for varying moving speed and region size in wireless environment. Our experimental result shows that SCTP reduces the mean response time of TCP based web traffic.

  • High-salted mineral water (Daehan Deep Water, Korea) that is pumped up from below the sedimentary rock layer of Dadaepo, Busan, Korea has a composition similar with that of deep sea water. Under the well-being boom, the mineral water is processed for various uses including washing or oral administration. However, high concentrations of various minerals in the mineral water are suspected to affect on the physiology of human body, especially on blood pressure (BP). Here, we examined the effect of Hot Mineral(R), dried powder of the mineral water, on the change of BP. SpragueDawley rats were grouped and orally administered $2.5\%$ Hot Mineral(R) (group M), $2.5\%$ NaCl (group S) or normal water (group C). Excreted urine was collected in metabolic cage for 24 hours. The systolic blood pressure (SBP) of the group S was remarkably increased (P<0.005) compared with that of the group M and the group C, which showed little changes of the SBP during 2 weeks. While average daily sodium intake were 0.32 mg in the group C, 6.64 mg in the group M and 4.07 mg in the group S, average daily sodium excretion were 11.37 mg, 53.70 mg and 7.75 mg, respectively. These results indicate that the sodium excretion in the group M was much higher than the other two groups. In this study, we suppose that the plenty amount of minerals such as calcium, potassium and magnesium in Hot Mineral? have an effect not to increase the SBP and to prompt sodium excretion out of the body. Therefore, these results suggest that oral administration of appropriate amount of Hot Mineral(R) for limited period does not induce increased SBP.
