This paper attempts to provide a theoretical basis for the design of high-strength concrete columns in terms of the spacing of lateral reinforcement. In order to achieve this, important concepts had to be addressed such as the choice of a measure of ductile behaviour and a realistic high-strength concrete stress-strain model, as well as limiting factors such as longitudinal steel buckling and lateral steel fracture. A design method incorporating above factors are suggested in the paper. It is shown that both buckling of longitudinal steel and hoop fracture will not demand a reduction in spacing of lateral ties with increase in compressive strength of concrete.
New material applications and transparency are desired by contemporary architects. Its superb transparency and high strength make glass a very suitable building material -in spite of its brittleness- even for primary load bearing structures. Currently we will focus on load bearing glass beams, subjected to different loading types. Since glass beams have a very slender, rectangular cross section, they are sensitive to lateral torsional buckling. Glass beams fail under a critical buckling load at stresses that lie far below the theoretical simple bending strength, due to the complex combination of torsion and out-of-plane bending, which characterises the instability phenomenon. The critical load can be increased considerably by preventing the upper rim from moving out of the beam's plane. Different boundary conditions are examined for different loading types. The load carrying capacity of glass beams can be increased three times and more using relatively simple, cheap lateral restraints.
Even though there is a guideline for the required strength of pipe support in inspection, it does not mean the nominal strength which can be used for the form work design. And, Concrete Specification defines that the pipe support should be designed according to the steel design guidelines but the design details are not provided, such as buckling length and the sectional modulus, etc. For the better prediction of strength of pipe support, the slenderness ratio of support which reflects the boundary condition should be considered. In this paper, the elastic buckling formula based on the slenderness is derived. The formula contains the strength reduction factor that consider the strength deduction caused by initial lateral deformation and is 0.65 consistently regardless of boundary conditions. And the coefficient of effective buckling length is calculated from the experiment.
This paper describes the moment capacity of flexural members with local buckling based on a series of FE and experiment results. Thin-walled flexural members undergo local, lateral-torsional, or interactive buckling according to the section geometries and lateral boundary conditions. Flexural members with large width-to-thickness ratios in the flanges or the web may undergo local buckling before lateral-torsional buckling. Local buckling has a negative effect on the flexural strength based on the lateral-torsional buckling of flexural members. This phenomenon should be considered in the estimation of the flexural strength of thin-walled sections. Flexural members with various width-to-thickness ratios in their flanges and web were analyzed. Initial imperfections in the local buckling mode, and residual stresses, were included in the FE analyses. Simple bending moment formulae for flexural members were proposed based on the FE and test results to account for local and lateral-torsional buckling. The proposed bending moment formulae for the thin-walled flexural members in the Direct Strength Method use the empirical strength formula and the grosssection modulus. The ultimate flexural strengths predicted by the proposed moment formulae were compared with the AISC (2005), Eurocode3 (2003), and Korean Highway Bridge Design Specifications (2010). The comparison showed that the proposed bending moment formulae can reasonably predict the ultimate moment capacity of thin-walled flexural members.

This paper presents theoretical and finite element analysis results for the lateral-torsional buckling of I-girders with corrugated web under uniform bending. Lateral-torsional buckling is a major design aspect for flexural members composed of thin-walled I-section. However, torsional rigidities such as the warping constants of the I-girders with corrugated web are not fully understood yet. In this paper, bending and pure torsional rigidities of I-girders with corrugated web are first described using the results of previous researchers. Then, the location of the shear center and the warping constants are derived. Using the derived section properties of I-girders with corrugated web, the lateral-torsional buckling strength is determined. Finite element analyses are conducted and the proposed lateral-torsional buckling strength of I-girders with corrugated web is successfully verified. Finally, the effects of corrugation profiles of the web on the lateral-torsional buckling load of I-girders with corrugated web are discussed.
The cross sections of multi-span beams are sometimes suddenly increased at the interior support of continuous beams to resist high negative moment. An earlier study on elastic lateral torsional buckling of stepped beams was conducted to propose new design equations. This research aims to continue the earlier study by considering the effect of inelastic buckling of stepped beams subjected to pure bending and general loading condition. A three-dimensional finite element-program ABAQUS and a statistical program MINITAB were used in the development of new design equations. The inelastic lateral torsional buckling strengths of 36 and 27 models for singly and doubly stepped beams, respectively, were investigated. The general loading condition consists of 15 loading cases based on the number of inflection point within the unbraced length of the stepped beams. The combined effects of residual stresses and geometrical imperfection were also considered to evaluate the inelastic buckling strengths. The proposed equations in this study will definitely improve current design methods for the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of stepped beams and will increase efficiency in building and bridge design.
The paper investigates beam lateral buckling stability according to linear and non-linear models. Closed form solutions for single-symmetric cross sections are first derived according to a non-linear model considering flexural-torsional coupling and pre-buckling deformation effects. The closed form solutions are compared to a beam finite element developed in large torsion. Effects of pre-buckling deflection and gradient moment on beam stability are not well known in the literature. The strength of singly symmetric I-beams under gradient moments is particularly investigated. Beams with T and I cross-sections are considered in the study. It is concluded that pre-buckling deflections effects are important for I-section with large flanges and analytical solutions are possible. For beams with T-sections, lateral buckling resistance depends not only on pre-buckling deflection but also on cross section shape, load distribution and buckling modes. Effects of pre-buckling deflections are important only when the largest flange is under compressive stresses and positive gradient moments. For negative gradient moments, all available solutions fail and overestimate the beam strength. Numerical solutions are more powerful. Other load cases are investigated as the stability of continuous beams. Under arbitrary loads, all available solutions fail, and recourse to finite element simulation is more efficient.
Buckling is a significant behavior to be considered whenever we design steel structures. In the case of H-shape beams, the lateral buckling occured by bending moment must be considered. Because of the lateral buckling of H-shape beams, the bending strength of the beams are determined by the lateral buckling stress instead of the allowable bending stress. Lateral buckling stress equation, consisting of two terms, i. e. ${\sigma}_{cr}({\nu},{\omega})={\sqrt{[{\sigma}_{cr}({\nu})]^2+[{\sigma}_{cr}({\omega})]^2}}$ has been using, but for the practical purpose of use the following equations are using two, i. e. ${\sigma}_{cr}({\nu})={\frac{0.65E}{{\ell}_h/A_f}}$, ${\sigma}_{cr}({\omega})={\frac{{\pi}^2E}{({\ell}_b/i_b)^2}}$. When we use the above equations, the results are different according to the shape of beam section, and they a re rather complex. In this study lateral buckling stress equation is derived, and the proposed formula$({\sigma}_{cr}(t))$ is compared with above mentioned two basic and practical equations. To verify the proposed formula experimentaly, 16H-shape beams which have different slender ratios arc tested by applying pure bending momet. Through the experiments the buckling behavior of H-shape beams is clarified, and the results shows that the proposed formula$({\sigma}_{cr}(t))$ is accurate enough for practical purpose.
The present study investigates the lateral torsional buckling behaviour of pultruded glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) simply supported channel beams subjected to uniform bending about their major axis. A parametric study by varying the sectional geometry and span of channel beams is carried out by using ABAQUS software. The accuracy of the FE models was ensured by verifying them against the available results provided in the literature. The effect of geometric nonlinearity, geometric imperfections, and the dependency of finite element mesh on the lateral torsional buckling were carefully considered in the FE model. Lateral torsional buckling (LTB) strengths obtained from the numerical study were compared with the theoretical LTB strengths obtained based on the Eurocode 3 approach for steel sections. The comparison between the numerical strengths and the design procedure proposed in the literature based on Eurocode 3 approach revealed disagreements. Therefore, a simplified improved design procedure is proposed for the safe design strength prediction of pultruded GFRP channel beams. The proposed equation has been provided that might aid the structural engineers in economically designing the pultruded GFRP channel beams in the future.
The flexural behavior of HSB I-girder with a non-slender web attributed to inelastic lateral-torsional buckling under uniform bending was investigated using nonlinear finite element analysis of ABAQUS. The girder was assumed to have a compact or noncompact web in order to prevent premature bend-buckling of the web. The unbraced length of the girder was selected so that inelastic lateral-torsional buckling governs the ultimate flexural strength. The compression flange was also assumed to be either compact or noncompact to prevent local buckling of the elastic flange. Both homogeneous sections fabricated from HSB600 or HSB800 steel and hybrid sections with HSB800 flanges and SM570-TMC web were considered. In the FE analysis, the flanges and web of I-girder were modeled as thin shell elements. Initial imperfections and residual stresses were imposed on the FE model. An elasto-plastic strain hardening material was assumed for steel. After establishing the validity of the present FE analysis by comparing FE results with test results in existing literature, the effects of initial imperfection and residual stress on the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling behavior were analyzed. Finite element analysis results for 96 sections demonstrated that the current inelastic strength equations for the compression flange in AASHTO LTFD can be applied to predict the inelastic lateral torsional buckling strength of homogeneous and hybrid HSB I-girders with a non-slender web.
