Cocoon production, which is a representative of traditional sericulture shifted into silkworm powder production in the spring of 1995. This, infect, signifies the change from the dress-centered textile business to the bio-industry and the functional resource industry. One of the most outstanding shifting is utilization of silkworm larvae for anti-diabetic agent. In Asian countries including Korea, silkworm powder derived from the domestic silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) has long been favored for anti-diabetic agent, but its efficacy was not tested until last decade by modern scientific methods. In this article, we reviewed the major researches on the silkworm powder as a blood glucose-lowering substance. After the beginning test of the efficacy of silkworm powder by a cooperative research between Department of Sericulture and Entomlogy, NIAST, RDA and Kyung Hee University, substantial data have been accumulated so far, In a serial experiment to select best condition, the fifth instar larvae prepared by freeze dry method turned out to have the best blood glucose-lowering effect. In the pharmacological experiment to understand the mechanism of silkworm powder in small intestine, the silkworm powder turned out to inhibit the activity of ${\alpha}$-glucosidase, by competitively binding to $\alpha$-type disaccharides. The animal experiment showed that the extract of silkworm powder prevents a rapid increase of blood glucose level after meal and prevents hunger and law blood glucose level during empty stomach. In the experiment to isolate the major component of silkworm powder, which exerts blood glucose-lowering effect, 1-deoxynojirimy-cin (DNJ) was eventually mass-purified, and it turned out that DNJ isolated from silkworm powder was excellent in its blood glucose-lowering effect. In the experiment to understand the personal difference of the efficacy of the silkworm powder, clinical candidates were divided on the basis of the criterion of traditional Chinese medicine: Tae-Yang, Tae-Um, So-yang, and So-Um. The result showed that silkworm powder has a tendency to reduce blood glucose level at fasting and at 2 hours after meal, and this trend was somewhat obvious in the Tae-Um body type. In summary, we reviewed scientific papers on the efficacy of silkworm powder and its purified DNJ as a blood glucose-lowering agent. These suggest that silkworm powder truly possesses blood glucose-lowering effect as documented in the traditional Chinese medicine, although further researches will be required to develop them as "medical" resource instead of functional food.
This study was carried out to investigate the occurrence and ecological characteristics of Ostrinia furnacalis(Guenee) in Yonchon, northern part of Kyonggi province, where it is main production region of adlay in Korea. The Asian corn borer in adlay field had three generations a year. The first stage of adult activity was greatest from middle May to late June, the second from late July to middle August and the third from late August to middle September. The egg period was $3{\sim}4$ days. The longevity of adult was $7{\sim}11$ days. The days of each development stage from egg to adult were $51{\sim}61$, $33{\sim}42$ and $29{\sim}37$ days in 1st, 2nd and 3rd generations, respectively. The overwintering stage of Asian corn borer was the last instar larvae and it overwintered in the adlay stubbles.

The black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens, larvae may depend on indigenous bacteria in the intestine to feed and digest diverse food sources. To prove this hypothesis, we isolated and identified the intestinal bacteria of the black soldier fly for their digestive and antimicrobial abilities. The last instar larvae had long digestive tracts, which were about seven times longer than its body length. An individual of H. illucens larvae possessed a total of $5.0{\pm}10^6$ bacteria in the whole intestine, of which more than 98% bacteria were located in the hindgut. Three different bacterial isolates cultured on nutrient agar (NA) medium were detected in the intestine and identified as Morganella morganii, Providencia rettgeri and Bacillus halodurans by Biolog microbial identification system. Analysis of 16S rDNA sequences of the intestinal bacteria detected the additional bacteria of Proteus mirabilis, Providencia alcalifaciens, and Providencia sp. These intestinal bacteria cultured on NA medium exhibited high resistance to 4 antibiotics and inhibited growth of other microbes which are mainly plant pathogens. Also, these bacteria exhibited catalytic activities to degrade cellulose, lipid, proteins, and carbohydrates. These results suggest that H. illucens larvae possess intestinal bacteria that may play crucial roles in their digestive physiology.

The entomopathogenic bacterium, $Xenorhabdus$ sp., was isolated from an entomopathogenic nematode, $Steinernema$$monticolum$. When these bacteria were injected into the hemocoel of the diamondback moth, $Plutella$$xylostella$, they caused significant mortality. However, the bacterium was not pathogenic when it was administered orally. This study showed that $Xenorhabdus$ sp. significantly enhanced oral pathogenicity of $Bacillus$$thuringiensis$ (Bt) against the last instar larvae of $P.$$xylostella$. Different ratios of culture broth of $Xenorhabdus$ sp. and Bt showed significantly different pathogenicities against $P.$$xylostella$. In field tests, the optimal bacterial mixture significantly enhanced control efficacy against $P.$$xylostella$ compared to Bt treatment alone. These results demonstrated that $Xenorhabdus$ sp. culture broth can be developed as a potent biopesticide by enhancing the insecticidal efficacy of Bt.
Eicosanoid mediates various cellular immune responses in insects. This study aimed to discover its novel action on the modulation of hemocyte populations in response to an immune challenge. Upon bacterial challenge, the last instar larvae of the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua, increased their total hemocyte density in 2 h, and then decreased it to a basal hemocyte density level. This rapid increase in total hemocyte density was explained by an increase of plasmatocyte and spherulocyte densities. When larvae were treated with dexamethasone (a specific phospholipase $A_2$ ($PLA_2$) inhibitor), they did not show any increase in hemocyte density in response to bacterial challenge. However, the addition of arachidonic acid (a catalytic product of $PLA_2$) to larvae treated with dexamethasone recovered the up-regulation of hemocyte density in response to bacterial infection. Among eicosanoid, cyclooxygenase (COX), but not lipoxygenase (LOX), products seemed to mediate the increase of hemocyte density in response to bacterial infection because naproxene (a COX inhibitor) inhibited the hemocyte density increase, though esculetin (a LOX inhibitor) did not. Prostaglandin $E_2$, a COX product, significantly increased the hemocyte density even without bacterial infection. These results suggest that eicosaniod mediates a rapid increase in total hemocyte density in response to immune challenge.
Research on the hormones of insect has followed by the special opportunities and problems arising from pollution. Since then, the main frame of it has been energetically exploited by ligation, decapitation and so on. In the meanwhile, knowledge of the biochemistry of hormone action as well as other aspects of biochemistry in insects has been gradually disclosed. Since 1966, practical use of active analogs of the hormones has been also worked out as an insecticide and brought the features of it to the light. On the other hand, it is expected to afford the increase of silk productivity resulted from control of the fifth larval period by delaying normal development. With these regards, some of analogs have been tried to apply practically to the silkworm. One of them is "Manta" produced by Zoecon Chemical Company and it is presently used for the increase of silk productivity in Japan. Another one is "R-20458", not registered one, issued by Stuffer Chemical Company. It is still pending for the silkworm growth regulator For the possibility of practical use, two chemicals are tested on the increase of silk productivity by topical application and the obtained results are summarized as follows. 1. It is evident that the fifth larval period was extended by topical application of the tested chemicals "Manta"and "R-20458"at the fifth instar after 51 hours of the last ecdysis, ranging from 12 hours to one day, as compared to. the control 2. In survival rates, there is no significance at 5% level between control and treatments. It proved that there was no toxity to silkworm by topical aprication. 3. There is an increase of cocoon yield in both chemical treatments. It was resulted from increase of weight of single cocoon. "Manta"2.5ppm produced 22.2kg of cocoon. It is equal to 9% increase in index, as compared to that of control. In case of R-20458, the increasing rates were varied at the different concentration; 21.4kg of cocoon production with 5% increase at 5ppm, 20.9kg of it with 2% increase at 2.5ppm and 20.6kg of it with 1% increase at 1. 25ppm in index, respectively, as compared with that of control. 4. Percentage of cocoon shell was increased by topical application. In case of "Manta" 2.5ppm, it is 25.6% which is equal to 6% increase in index, as compared with that of control. For "R-20458", the increasing rates of percentage of cocoon shell were varied with the different level of chemical concentration. They are 25.0% of 4% increase at 2.5ppm, 24.9% of 3% increase at 1.25ppm and 24.7% of 3% increase at 5ppm. 15% increase was attained at "Manta" 2.5ppm in the weight of cocoon layer based on cocoon yield and percentage of cocoon shell in index, as compared with that of control. The rates for "R-20458"are 5% increase at 2.5ppm and 4% increase at 1. 25ppm in index.

This study was conducted to investigate the distribution pattern, ecological characteristics and life cycle of the Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens, BSF). The BSF was widely distributed throughout Korea. The insect was mainly found in the vicinity of and in cattle sheds, manure sheds, living waste dump grounds, and food waste dump grounds. Developmental characteristics of the BSF are as follows: the egg was long oval shaped of 887 ${\mu}m$ in the major axis and 190 ${\mu}m$ in the minor axis; it weighed 24 ${\mu}g$. Female oviposited ca. 1,000 eggs on average; eggs hatched in 81 hours under laboratory condition ($27^{\circ}C$, 60% R.H.). The duration of the larval stage was approximately $15{\sim}20$ days. The size of the last instar larvae was 21 mm. The cuticle of the pupae gradually acquired red-brown color and the size of them was 19 mm. The pupal stage was shorter for females (16 days) than males (15 days). Adults were sized about $13{\sim}20$ mm long and black-colored. The life span of adult insects was $5{\sim}8$ days for the first generation (June${\sim}$July), $7{\sim}10$ days for the second generation (Aug.${\sim}$Sept.), and $13{\sim}18$ days for the third generation (Sept.${\sim}$Oct.). Mating started on the next day of emergence and actively occurred at the third day after emergence. Mating mostly occurred between 10:00 and 16:00 during which light intensity is highest. Egg-laying started on the third day and was most frequent from the fourth to the sixth day after emergence. Similar to mating time, females oviposited mostly between 10:00 and 16:00.
Development and reproduction of the cotton caterpillar, Palpita indica, were investigatedunder different temperatures (15 .O, 17.5, 20.0, 22.5, 25 .O, 27.5, 30.0, 32.5, and 35 .O$^{\circ}$C). Duration fromegg to pre-adult of the cotton caterpillar were ranged from 68.6 days at 175$^{\circ}$C to 19.7 days at 35.0% (3.5times shorter growth period compared with that at 17S$^{\circ}$C). At 15.0$^{\circ}$C, cotton caterpillar eggs developedto the last larval instar but were not able to go through the pupal stage. The lower developmentalthreshold temperatures and degree-days of egg, larva, pupa, and complete development were 13.4, 10.6,11.6, and 11.5"C and 55.3,251.5, 138.3, and 479.8 degree days, respectively. The hatching, pupation andemergence rates were higher at 25.0eC and 27.5"C compared with other temperatures. The survival ratefrom the hatched larva to adult was the highest at 27.5"C. The preoviposition and the adult longevity were11.5 and 30.6 days at 17.5"C and 1.5 and 9.2 days at 35.0$^{\circ}$C, respectively. The mean fecundity perfemales was greater at 25.0$^{\circ}$C and 27.5"C compared with other temperatures. Mean generation time indays (T) was shorter on higher temperature. Net reproductive rate per generation (R,) was the lowest atthe highest temperature as well as at the lowest, and it was 199.1 which was the highest at 27.5"C. Theintrinsic rate of natural increase (r,) was highest at 30.0$^{\circ}$C as 0.148. As a result, optimum ranges oftemperature for P. indica growth were between 25.0-32.5"C .emperature for P. indica growth were between 25.0-32.5"C .t;C .
The size of infective $Steinernema$$arenarium$ juveniles is variable and ranges from 724 to 1408 ${\mu}m$. Effects of harvest time and infective juvenile size on pathogenicity, development, and reproduction were examined in the last instar of the great wax moth, $Galleria$$mellonella$. Harvest time of infective juveniles (IJs) of $S.$$arenarium$ affected pathogenicity. IJs harvested at the 10th day from trapping were more pathogenic than those harvested the 3rd day from trapping. Mortality of $G$. mellonella also depending on harvest time, $i.e$, 100% died within 48h when IJs were harvested at the 10th day, without relation to size. However, mortality was 40% in the small size group (SSG) compared with 18% in the large size group (LSG) within 48h when IJs were harvested at the 3rd day. Establishment of $S.$$arenarium$ within the host was different depending on IJ size. The number of established IJs was 1.8 in the SSG, 3.3 in the LSG, and 3.2 in the mixed size group (MSG) when IJs were harvested at the 3rd day, and 5.3 in the SSG, 7.4 in the LSG, and 7.6 in the MSG when IJs were harvested at the 10th day. The length of the female adult was 7,070.5 ${\mu}m$ in the SSG and 7,893.9 ${\mu}m$ in the LSG and that of the male was 1,460.5 ${\mu}m$ in the SSG and 1,688.2 ${\mu}m$ in the LSG when IJs were harvested at the 3rd day. The length of the female adult was 7,573.6 ${\mu}m$ in the SSG and 8,305.4 ${\mu}m$ in the LSG and that of the male adult was 1,733.4 ${\mu}m$ in the SSG and 1,794.4 ${\mu}m$ in the LSG when IJs were harvested at the 10th day. Harvest time and size of IJs did not influence numbers of progeny or size of IJS.
