  • For demonstrating widely tunable external cavity lasers operating for near-infrared (NIR) wavelength, a flexible polymer waveguide with an imbedded Bragg grating is incorporated. Due to the superior flexibility of the polymer material, the reflection wavelength of the Bragg grating is widely tunable by imposing tensile and compressive strains on the flexible Bragg grating. A third-order Bragg grating is formed on the device for facilitating the fabrication method. With a superluminescent laser diode as a gain medium of ECL, the tunable laser exhibited output power of -3 dBm and a tuning range of 32 nm.

  • The process of thermal-degradation of thin-film polymeris studied in this work for various laser sources from CW to fs. Samples composed of a thin polymer layer sandwiched between two glass plates are irradiated by the lasers and the threshold irradiance of polymer carbonization is experimentally measured. In the numerical analysis, the transient temperature distribution is calculated and the number density of carbonization in the polymer layer is also estimated. It is shown that pulsed lasers can result in more uniform distribution of temperature and carbonization than the CW laser.

  • To investigate the effects of beam focusing in the etching of polymers with short pulse Excimer lasers, a polymer etching model of SSB's is combined with a beam focusing model. Through the numerical simulation, it was found that in the high laser fluence region, SSB model considering both photochemical and thermal contribution is considered to be suitable to predict the etched hole shape than a simple photochemical etching model. The average temperature distribution into the substance obtained by assuming 1-D heat transfer is found to be fairly similar to the fluence distribution on the ablated surface. The experimental etching data fur polymers are used to give material properties for ablation model. The fitted etch depth curve gives a nice agreement with the experimental data.

  • We have formulated an empirical analytic model for the static characteristics of implanted vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs). Specifically, we have derived analytic formulas for the threshold current, slope efficiency, dynamic resistance, and the output power and forward voltage at the operation current of 12 ㎃ in terms of the implant and metal-aperture radii by fitting the measured results. The radii of the metal aperture and implant mask of the 850 nm VCSELs range from 4 to 12.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 7 to 17.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ respectively. The model shows the way of tailoring the VCSEL characteristics by changing the mask dimensions only.

  • Lasers are used as the source of the interferometers in the industrial field. These lasers need 2 requirements. The first is the narrow linewidth of laser for the long coherence length. The second is the stabilized frequency of laser for the precision measurement. Now HeNe lasers are mostly used and the frequency stability is about 10$^{-9}$ . In this paper, we construct the HeNe laser systems of frequency stabilization using typical 2 method, the beat frequency stabilization method and the intensity difference method. So, we get the frequency stabilities of 2.01$\times$10$^{-9}$ (0.1s), 3.4$\times$10$^{-9}$ (0.1s).

  • A method for calibrating a laser profiling system for seafloor micro-topography measurements is described. The system consists of a digital camera and an arrangement of six red lasers that are mounted as a unit on a remotely operated vehicle (ROV). The lasers project as parallel planes onto the seafloor, creating profiles of the local topography that are interpreted from the digital camera image. The goal of the calibration was to determine the plane equations for the six lasers relative to the camera. This was accomplished in two stages. First, distortions in the digital image were corrected using an interpolation method based on a virtual pinhole camera model. Then, the laser planes were determined according to their intersections with a calibration target. The position and orientation of the target were obtained by a registration process. The selection of the target shape and size was found to be critical to a successful calibration at sea, due to the limitations in the manoeuvrability of the ROV.

  • We introduce a scheme with a maximized efficiency of detecting atoms passing through an optical standing-wave mode cavity. Consider a standing-wave optical cavity illuminated by a weak probe beam through one of its mirrors where the transmission through the other mirror is monitored by a photodetector. If an atom is put in the cavity, the atom-cavity coupling shifts the resonance frequency of the system via the so-called normal mode splitting, and thereby the transmission power will drop. In fact, this type of atom detection scheme has been used in recent single atom trap experiments In practice, however, the field in a standing-wave mode will have a geometrical structure having nodes and antinodes that when the atom traverses the cavity through one of the nodes, there will be no such effect of atom-field interaction. • We discuss two possibilities of using femtosecond pulse lasers as a new interferometric light source for enhanced precision surface-profile metrology. First, a train of ultra-fast laser pulses yields repeated low temporal coherence, which allows unequal-path scanning interferometry, which is not feasible with white light. Second, the high spatial coherence of femtosecond pulse lasers enables large-sized optics to be tested in nonsymmetric configurations with relatively small-sized reference surfaces. These two advantages are verified experimentally using Fizeau and Twyman-Green type scanning interferometers.

  • We theoretically studied synchronization of chaotic oscillation in semiconductor lasers with chaotic light injection feed-back induced chaotic light generated from a master semiconductor laser was injected into a solitary slave semiconductor laser. The slave laser subsequently exhibited synchronized chaotic output for a wide parameter range with strong injection and frequency detuning within the injection locking scheme. We also analytically examined chaos synchronization based on a linear stability analysis from the view point of synchronization based on a linear stability analysis from the view point of modulation response of injection locked semiconductor lasers to chaotic light signal.

  • The operating characteristics, such as, the threshold gain, lasing frequency, and longitudinal intensity profile, etc., of 1.55$\mu$m DFB laser diode with index and/or gain grating structures and with one side AR-coated mirror have been analyzed. From this analysis, the optimum design parameters have been shown that ${\Delta}{\Omega}$ (the phase difference between index grating and gain grating) is 0 or ${\pi}$, (xL)$_{r}$=1~3 and (xL)$_{i}$=0.5~0.9. It has been also shown that the modal selectivity and intensity uniformity of the DFB lasers with .DELTA..OMEGA.=0 are ~1.2 times better thatn those of the DFB lasers with ${\Delta}{\Omega}$= ${\pi}$.
