  • A harmonically mode-locked fiber ring laser cavlty was theoretically analyzed. The measured charactenstlcs of a 10 GHz erbium-doped fiber ring laser were used as a basis of the theoretical analysis. From the nonlinear Schroedinger equation of an actively mode-locked erblUm-doped fiber laser. the effects of the components inside the laser cavity have been analyzed includmg nonlinear effects from group-velocity dispersion (GVD) and self-phase modulation (SPM). Usmg the analysls. we have designed a laser cavity with minimum pulsewidth and chirp by changing the intracavity optical intensity and the bandwidth of the filter. In the new design, the chirp i, reduced by 2 times and the pulsewidth by 2A times. compared to the laser used in the experiment. iment.

  • Planar laser-induced fluorescence(PLIF) has been widely used to obtain two dimensional fuel distribution. Acetone PLIF is chosen because fluorescence signal from acetone as a fluorescent tracer is less sensitive to oxygen quenching than other dopants. Acetone PLIF is applied to measure quantitative air excess ratio distribution in an engine fueled with LPG. Acetone is excited by KrF excimer laser (248nm) and its fluorescence image is acquired by ICCD camera with a cut-off filter to suppress Mie scattering from the laser light. For the purpose of quantifying PLIF signal, an image processing method including the correction of laser sheet beam profile is suggested. Raw images are divided by each intensity of laser energy and profile of laser sheet beam. Inhomogeneous fluorescence images scaled with the reference data, which is taken by a calibration process, are converted to air excess ratio distribution. This investigation shows instantaneous quantitative measurement of planar air excess ratio distribution for gaseous fuel.

  • In order to clarify the characteristics of soot formation and oxidation in-cylinder of a diesel engine, it is necessary to diagnose accurately for combustion of in-cylinder. The past techniques for soot measurement have limitations in providing the characteristics of soot in a diesel engine, whereas, laser-based 2D imaging diagnostics have the potential to provide better temporally and spatially resolved measurements of the soot distribution. We rebuilt an optically accessible diesel engine which is similar to the conditions of a conventional engine and tried to measure soot distribution in a cylinder of the diesel engine using laser induced scattering(LIS) and laser induced incandescence(LII). Some results were acquired in this study. LIS and LII signal that show soot distribution of a in-cylinder were taken by ICCD properly. The signal of LIS was intenser than that of LII. Although they have some differences of signal intensity in early combusion period, both of signals show that they are generally similar in late combustion period, after ATDC 50 degree.

  • Weldability is largely dependent on the phase evolution and the microstructure of the weld. For the weldability of the $Cu_{54}Ni_6Zr_{22}Ti_{18}$ bulk metallic glass, the crystallization affects the sensitivity of the weld to the brittle failure. In order to suppress the irreversible crystallization, Nd:YAG laser welding was chosen. The pulsed Nd:YAG laser was irradiated onto the BMG plate and the effects of the pulse shape [peak power intensity and pulse duration time] on the crystallinity were evaluated.

  • In this paper, we introduced a near infrared fluorescence imaging system that has long working distance and analyzed on the effects of measurement variables such as gain, exposure time, working distance, magnification. Fluorescence signal intensity is growing up according to exposure time and magnification increasing, and it is getting stronger according to increase of gain, but the background signal intensity is getting stronger together. It causes low SBR. Due to a laser irradiation method, laser intensity distribution of the introduced system is not uniform and it makes fluorescence signal weak. So, we proposed a solution.

  • The system design and the system performance analysis of 3D imaging laser radar system for the mapping purpose is addressed in this article. For the mapping, a push-bloom scanning method is utilized. The pulsed fiber laser with high pulse energy and high pulse repetition rate is used for the light source of laser radar system. The high sensitive linear mode InGaAs avalanche photo-diode is used for the laser receiver module. The time-of-flight of laser pulse from the laser to the receiver is calculated by using high speed FPGA based signal processing board. To reduce the walk error of laser pulse regardless of the intensity differences between pulses, the time of flight is measured from peak to peak of laser pulses. To get 3D image with a single pixel detector, Risley scanner which stirs the laser beam in an ellipsoidal pattern is used. The system laser energy budget characteristics is modeled using LADAR equation, from which the system performances such as the pulse detection probability, false alarm and etc. are analyzed and predicted. The test results of the system performances are acquired and compared with the predicted system performance. According to test results, all the system requirements are satisfied. The 3D image which was acquired by using the laser radar system is also presented in this article.

  • This study reports the CW $CO_2$ laser scribing of soda lime glass. In this study, scribing experiments are carried out at different laser powers, scan speeds, and focal positions to investigate the effect of the process parameters on the interaction characteristics between a laser beam and glass. In particular, the interaction characteristics are analyzed and described with the input laser energy per unit length. According to the experimental results, the damage threshold for the glass surface was found to exist between 0.072 and 0.08 J/mm. The input laser energy in this region induced partial melting of the surface and grain-shaped cracks. These cracks tended to increase as the input laser energy increased. At the laser input energy larger than 1 J/mm, a huge crack propagating along the scan direction was produced, and the volume below the scribed area was fully melted. The growth of this crack finally resulted in the complete cutting of the glass at the input laser energy above 8 J/mm. It was found that both the width and depth of the scribed line increased with increasing input laser energy. For the beam focusing at the rear surface, the width of the scribed line varied irregularly. This could be ascribed to the increased asymmetry of the beam intensity distribution when the laser beam was focused at the rear surface. Under this condition, a large burr was only produced on one side of the scribed line.

  • In this research, a novel optical measuring methodology for the measurement of oil thickness in seawater is suggested by evaluating the light absorption which is occurred in the process of penetrating through oil layer on seawater. Laser having monochromatic wave is used as a light source and photodiode which can convert the intensity of the light into an electrical signal is applied to measure the intensity of the penetrating light through the oil-water mixtures. In the experiment, bunker C and lubricating oil are used, and three different lasers having different wavelengths are applied and compared for the selection of an optimal light source. As a result, it is observed that in the case of blue laser, the intensity of the light on the optical sensor decreases with an increase in the oil thickness. Through this relation, both the presence of oil and the thickness of oil can be determined.

  • We have characterized the optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification of femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser pulses by using a BBO crystal. It is numerically verified that a high gain and a broad gain bandwidth can be obtained with a 532-nm pump laser. The dependence of the gain profile of OPA on phase matching angles, pump intensity, and crystal length is numerically investigated. Experimental results shows that the temporal fluctuation of a pump laser causes the modulation of an amplified spectrum in OPCPA.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of pulsed magnetic field (PMF) and low frequency low level laser (LFLLL) stimuli on acupoint LI4 (Hegu) using photoplethysmography (PPG). Our PMF system was designed to generate maximum intensity of 0.20 T at a transition time of 0.16 ms, with pulse intervals of 1 Hz. The diode laser with wavelength of 650 nm and power of 5 mW was also employed. It was observed the change of the pulsating blood volume through measuring PPG signals from both hands. These results imply that stimulating acupoint LI4 with PMF and LFLLL improves the circulation of peripheral vascular system. In particular, PMF stimulation brings a big improvement of the blood flow even with short term stimulation of 3-4 minutes compared to LFLLL stimulus.
