Precocious metamorphosis was induced in two popular bivoltine breeds i.e. YB and $NB_4D_2$ by an imidazole compound having anti-juvenile hormone activity. The chemical was administered by feeding treatment with mulberry leaf to freshly moulted (0-6 hrs) IV instar larvae. The dose of the chemical was found to be breed specific being 650 ppm for YB and 500 ppm for $NB_4D_2$. The chemical caused complete skipping up of the fifth instar larvae which is most susceptible to diseases. But IV instar was somewhat prolonged. As a result the total larval period was reduced by 4-5 days. However, some of the rearing and reeling parameters like cocoon yield, cocoon weight, shell weight, shell %, filament length and fecundity were reduced for that particular generation only. The effective rate of rearing (ERR %) was significantly increased in trimoulters during the most unfavourable August - September seed crop season. Number of cocoons / kg and number of male moth were significantly higher in trimoulters. These may be useful for preparation of $multi{\times}bi$ hybrid seed. Fine denier was also found in trimoulter cocoon which is the cause of getting fine silk filament from trimoulter cocoons. Normal mating behaviour and emergence pattern was recorded in trimoulters. Bivoltine trimoulter males also showed competence for mating with multivoltine females. These results suggest the possibility of getting trimoulter males during hot and humid seasons when rearing of bivoltine is almost impossible particularly in Eastern and North Eastern India.
Silkworm fed on mulgerry leaves with 1000 times diluted Insegar(main component : Fenoxycarb, ethyl-2-(4-phenoxyphenoxy)ethylcarbmate) and its effects was investigated on increase of the 5th larval silkgland weight and silk quality. The oral application of fenoxycarb showed increase of the silkgland weight. The whole period of the silkgland weight falls on the 2nd instar treatment by 13%, the 3rd day of the 4th instar by 111%(3100 mg) and the whole period of the 5th instar treatment rather decreased it by 66%(497 mg), as compared to 1470mg of the control. Female and male both increased 15%(1779mg) and 12%(1554mg) of the silkgland weight with the 2nd instar treatment, as compared to 1548mg and 1391mg in control, respectively. 118%(3368mg) and 104%(2832mg) of increase in the silkgland weight were also showed with the 3rd day of the 4th instar treatment but 70%(463mg) and 61%(539mg) of decrease were shown with the 5th instar treatment. The maximum weight of the middle silkgland weight increased by 6%(1248mg) and 127%(2673mg) with the 2nd instar and with the 3rd day of the 4th instar, respectively but 67%(393mg) of decrease took place, as compared to 1175mg of the control. The maximum increase of the posterior silkgland weight with whole peried of the 2nd instar treatment increased 12%(419mg) and 75%(656mg) and 64%(135mg) of decrease was shown, as compared to 374mg of the control. The oral application of Insegar at the 2nd instar increased 26 m of cocoon length, 4.0 cg of the cocoon filament weight and 0.21d of the silk denier, as compared to 1147 m of the cocoon length, 38 cg of the cocoon filament, 2.99d of the silk denier, weight of cocoon filament and silk denier, respectively but denier variance narrowed to 0.33d, as compared to that of the control.
The author reared the bandwinged grasshoppers, Oedaleus infernalis infernalis in the growth cabinet controlled as temperature of 25。C and 30。C under the conditiion of photoperiod 16L:8D, light intensity 510$\pm$240lux, relative humidity 65$\pm$3%. The results are summarized as follows: The female has six instars and male five instars. The larva reared in the temperature of 25。C died at the second larva stage, and the development to the third instar was impossible. The developmental periods of the egg stage of both sexes in the 30。C are 24.06 days. In the larval development periods, the fourth statge (19.73 days) was longer than that of any stage, and the second stage has the shortest period (9.9 days) in female. In male, the developmental period (9.59 days). The total developmental periods of female and male from the egg to the fifth instar were approximately 95.02 and 95.04 days, respectively. The total developmental period of female was as long as the period (15.75 days) of sixth instar which is not in the male. The survivorship curve in the temperature of 30。C shows concave type.
Larval development and adult oviposition of the Oriental tobacco budworm, Heliothis assulta were examined with tobacco leaves sprayed with aqueous or ethanolic extracts from ten selected wild plant species. High larval mortality was observed with extracts from Rhamnus davurice. Persicaria hydroPiPer, Forsythia koreana, Trifolium repens, Styrax japonica, Ginkgo bi/oba, and vilis amurensis. Most of larval mortality occurred during first and second instar, apparently due to antifeeding effects of plant extracts. These extracts also prolonged developmental period of survived larvae and increased the number of larval molts. Oviposition was not affected as much as the larval mortality, but Rhamnus davurice and Styrax jaPonica extracts reduced the number of eggs laid by more than fifty percent.
Larvae of Pandalus gracilis were reared in the laboratory under controlled conditions (salinity, 32.5∼34.5; photo-periods, 12L: 12D). The experiments were designed to examine effects of temperature (10 and 2$0^{\circ}C$) on larval development, survival, intermolt period and larval growth. The higher survival rate was obtained at 2$0^{\circ}C$ than at 1$0^{\circ}C$ and larvae reached later stages at 2$0^{\circ}C$. Intermolt period increased significantly with increasing of instar number and was longer at 1$0^{\circ}C$ than at 2$0^{\circ}C$.
In autumn season residual period of nicotine is observed in the larval duration, weight of molting larvae at the various stages, percentage of delayed molting larvae, and survival rate up to the 3rd stage from the 1st season to the 3rd season and up to the stage for four seasons, respectively. Mulberry tree is planted in pot from June 18, 1973 to August 4, 1973 and placed every other row between tobacco variety of Hicks cultivated in mulching system and control is prepared in the Sericultural Experiment Station, placing in the every ridge of mulberry field with the four seasons ; 5 day isolation (1st season), 15 day isolation (2nd season), 25 day isolation (3rd season), and 50 day isolation (4th season). 1) 1st and 3nd instar larvae fed with the tobacco stained mulberry leaf has longer larval duration for the four seasons, as compared with those of the control, increasing 12% in index with 28 hours, 17% in index with 37 hours, 23% in index with 50 hours, 17% in index with 43 hours from the 1st season to the fourth season and the 3rd to the 4th instar larvae, increasing 18% in index with 55 hours. 2) 2nd instar molting larvae, 3rd instar molting larvae from the 1st to the 4th season and 4th instar molting larvae at the 4th season decrease their larval weight respectively, as compared with the control. 3) Percentage of delayed molting larvae from the 3rd stage to the 4th stage goes up higher than that of the control in the End larval stage at the 3rd to the 4th season, in the 3rd larval stage at the 1st, the End, and the 4th season, and in the 4th larval stage at the 4th season, respectively. 4) Survival rates in the 2nd larval stage at the 2nd season to the 4th season, in the 3rd larval stage at the 1st to the 4th season, and in the 4th larval stage at the 4th season respectively are higher than that in the control.
The effects of temperature on the growth of larvae of wrinkled swimming crab (Liocarcinus corrugatus) under controlled laboratory conditions of 15, 20 and $24^{\circ}C$ were investigated (33.5 psu: 12L: 12B). Each specimen was maintained individually, the instar size was determined from exuvia, and the survival and intermolt period of each instar were recorded. There were no significant differences (P>0.05) in the survival rates at 15, 20, and $24^{\circ}C.$ Comparison of survival over the first 27 days between the three temperature regimes showed significant differences (P<0.001). The intermolt period increased with the instar number, and was greatly extended at the lowest temperature. The molt increment varied little with temperature, and had a mean value of $21.35\%$ over the whole study. Temperature had little effect on survival and molt increment.
Elementary preservice teachers' understanding about the insect molt and metamorphosis was examined. Data were collected through the paper-pencil test of 448 junior students at a National University of Education. The instrument used was developed by Son(2003) and modified for the test. The results are as follows: First, Only 3.1$\%$ of students had a scientific concept on the molt periods in the insect life cycle. Students had an alternative conception that molt occurs either only in the larval period (29.9$\%$) or only in the period from pupa to adult (22.3$\%$). The percentage of the students thinking that molt occurs in the period from larva to pupa was low. Second, 98$\%$ of students stated that molt has to do with the larval growth, but 39.1$\%$ of students had an alternative conception that molt occurs after the larval growth at each instar. 25.1$\%$ had a conception that molt is related with the larval growth, but did not show any further understanding. Third, most students understood the correct meaning of metamorphosis. 34..2$\%$ of students had an alternative conception that metamorphosis occurs only in the period changing from pupa to adult, and only a few thought that it occurs in the period from larva to pupa. 24.8$\%$ of students had a scientific concept on the periods in which metamorphosis occurs. Fourth, some students understood the hatching process as molt in the sense that the egg shell is taken off (21.0$\%$), and as metamorphosis in terms of the appearance change from egg to larva (25.0$\%$). Fifth, 35.5$\%$ of students selected bees as an insect of incomplete metamorphosis, and 35.3$\%$ responded 'I have no idea', showing that they had poor understanding about the insect life cycle.
The results obtained are as follows. 1. The black-back Prominent has three to four generations in a year depending on the ecological conditions. The first adult appears from the middle of May to early June. 2. The average longevities of aduts were 5.8 days for the male and 5.9 days for female. 3. The period of eggs were about 4 days. 4. The larval period was about 17 2 days. 5. The pupal period was about 5 to 8 days. 6. The width of the head capsule ranged from 0.37mm for the 1st instar to 2.45mm for the last instar. 7. The larvae fed $95cm^2$ for the female and $60cm^2$ for the male in the laboratory condition. 8. The estimated number of the frass evacuated by the larvae were 682 in the laboratory and 663 in the field. 9. The sizes of the frass varied from 0.11mm to 2.46mm in length and 0,05mm to 2.92mm in diameter according to the larval instars. 10. The number of eggs in ovary were about 400. 11. This insect overwinters as a young larva.
