  • In centralized control system, complicated control systems including sensors, power supply and dampers should be required to satisfy the target response of large-scale structures. The practical applications of the centralized control system, however, is very difficult due to high order finite element model of structures, uncertainty of models, and limitations of the excitation system. In this study, the decentralized response-dependent MR damper of which magnetic field is automatically modulated according to the displacement or velocity transferred to the damper without any sensing and computing systems. this decentralized response-dependent MR damper are investigated according to the ranges of relative magnitude between the control force of MR damper and the story shear force of structures by nonlinear time history analysis. Finally, its performance is compared with centralized LQR algorithm which is used in general centralized control theory for a three story building structure.

  • The galactic magnetic field (GMF) and the intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF) affect the propagation of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) from the source to us. Here we examine the influences of the GMF/IGFM and the dependence of their sky distribution on galactic latitude, b. We analyze the correlation between the arrival direction (AD) of UHECRs observed by the Pierre Auger Observatory and the large-scale structure of the universe in regions of sky divided by b. Specifically, we compare the AD distribution of observed UHECRs to that of mock UHECRs generated from a source model constructed with active galactic nuclei. Our source model has the smearing angle as a free parameter that reflects the deflection angle of UHECRs from the source. The results show that larger smearing angles are required for the observed distribution of UHECRs in lower galactic latitude regions. We obtain, for instance, a $1{\sigma}$ credible interval for smearing angle of $0^{\circ}{\leq}{\theta}_s{\leq}72^{\circ}$ at high galactic latitudes, $60^{\circ}$ < $\left|{b}\right|{\leq}90^{\circ}$, and of $75^{\circ}{\leq}{\theta}_s{\leq}180^{\circ}$, $-30^{\circ}{\leq}b{\leq}30^{\circ}$, at low galactic latitudes, respectively. The results show that the influence of the GMF is stronger than that of the IGMF. In addition, we can estimate the strength of GMFs by these values; if we assume that UHECRs would have heavier nuclei, the estimated strengths of GMF are consistent with the observational value of a few ${\mu}G$. More data from the future experiments may make UHECR astronomy possible.

  • Korean peninsula is known to be far from the plate boundary and not to generate large-scale earthquakes. However, earthquakes recently occurred in Gyeongju (2016/09/12, $M_L=5.8$) and Pohang (2017/11/15, $M_L=5.4$). The interest in earthquake engineering has increased, and various studies are actively underway by recently events. However, the seismic station network in Korea is less dense than that of the western U.S., resulting in the lack of data for detailed analyses of earthquakes. Therefore, KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration) set up temporary seismic stations and recorded ground motions from aftershocks. In this study, characteristics of Pohang seismic propagation and generation of bedrock motion are analyzed through the aftershock ground motion records at both permanent and temporary stations, as well as through the collected geological structure and site information. As a result, the response at Mangcheon-Li shows evidences of basin effects from both geology structures and measured aftershock motions.

  • Recently, large scale concrete structures exposed to severe environment are increasingly built in various locations. The corrosion may severely affect the durability and service life of such a concrete structure. It is, therefore, necessary to develop durable concrete to enhance the corrosion resistance. The corrosion resistance of concrete can be identified through accelerated corrosion test. The purpose of the present paper is, therefore, to devise a reasonable and accurate method to predict the amount of corrosion of reinforcing steels. The proposed method which is basically based on the concept of Faraday's Law, determines the corroded amount of a rebar according to accelerated corrosion time. The corrosion is accelerated by employing the potentiometric corrosion test arrangement. The effects of admixtures in concrete including fly ash and silica fume have been also studied to explore the relative corrosion resistance of concrete.

  • Electroluminescence(EL) devices based on organic thin films have been attracted lots of interests in large-area light-emitting display. In this stuffy, an emissive layer was fabricated using Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) technique in organic light-emitting (OLEDs). This emissive organic material was synthesized and named PECCP[poly(3.6-N-2-ethylhexyl carbazolyl cyanoterephthalidene)] which has a strong electron donor group and an electron acceptor group in main chain repeated unit. This material has good solubility in common organic solvents such as chloroform. THF, etc, and has a good stability in air. The Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) technique has the advantage of precise control of the thickness down to the molecular scale, In particular, by varying the film thickness it is possible to investigate the metal/polymer interface. Optimum conditions for the LB film deposition are usually determined by investigating a relationship between a surface pressure $\pi$ and an effective are A occupied by one molecule on the subphase. The LB films were deposited on an indium-tin-oxide(ITO) glass at a surface pressure of 10 mN/m and dipping speed of 12 mm/min after spreading PECCP solution on distilled water surphase at room temperature, Cell structure was ITO/PECCP LB film/Alq$_3$/Al. We considered PECCP as a hole -transport layer inserted between the emissive layer and ITO. We also used Alq$_3$ as an emissive layer and an electron transport layer. We measured current-voltage(I-V) characteristics, UV/visible absorption, PL spectrum and EL spectrum of the OLEDs.

  • Dynamic displacement of structures is an important index for in-service structural condition and behavior assessment, but accurate measurement of structural displacement for large-scale civil structures such as long-span bridges still remains as a challenging task. In this paper, a vision-based dynamic displacement measurement system with the use of digital image processing technology is developed, which is featured by its distinctive characteristics in non-contact, long-distance, and high-precision structural displacement measurement. The hardware of this system is mainly composed of a high-resolution industrial CCD (charge-coupled-device) digital camera and an extended-range zoom lens. Through continuously tracing and identifying a target on the structure, the structural displacement is derived through cross-correlation analysis between the predefined pattern and the captured digital images with the aid of a pattern matching algorithm. To validate the developed system, MTS tests of sinusoidal motions under different vibration frequencies and amplitudes and shaking table tests with different excitations (the El-Centro earthquake wave and a sinusoidal motion) are carried out. Additionally, in-situ verification experiments are performed to measure the mid-span vertical displacement of the suspension Tsing Ma Bridge in the operational condition and the cable-stayed Stonecutters Bridge during loading tests. The obtained results show that the developed system exhibits an excellent capability in real-time measurement of structural displacement and can serve as a good complement to the traditional sensors.

  • This study examines performances of cooperatives relative to investor-owned firms in the US electric power industry. Using a panel data of firms from 2001 to 2014, the results show that cooperatives operate under conditions of more difficult capital constraints associated with the higher cost of debt and limited access to external equity capital. While investor-owned utilities, especially the large utilities that are less capital constrained, take benefits from substantial scale economies existing in the industry, the marginal cost of operation substantially increases with output for cooperatives. I do not find differences in profitability between the two ownership structures, measured by return on assets and return on equity. Plant capacity utilization, which is a measure of plant efficiency conditional on the operation, is also not statistically different between the two groups.

  • Korean traditional architecture has been carried out in the manner that it harmonized surrounding natural environments and never disturbed them in the scale which did not overwhelm the nature, based on the view of architecture predicated on Yin Yang School. The exposed grain of the wood like pillar, hinge and house rafte, the linear expression of the construction material and the formation between the window and door monopolizing the front side presented a harmony with the nature showing the linear structure. Furthermore the ceiling is low due to the sit life style thanks to the ondol (Korean under-floor heating system and the furniture was made in simple manner to utilize the space as large as possible, for the interior was narrow and close, and also the furniture placing in the middle of the room was movably manufactured to improve the room space. Like this Korean traditional furniture was close associated with the low height and simplicity and harmonized with the blank of the wall accordingly, and it characterized linear & planar natural beauty focusing on the simple and refined unique beauty, because it was made in a good harmony with the interior utensils. This study has presented that the organic characteristics of Korean traditional aesthetic of architecture and the natural beauty being intrinsic in traditional furniture have a mutual relation on the basis of not only the visual recognition, also the aesthetic of naturalism made of the natural material, the constructional naivety as a frame method and the linear & planar formative beauty shown in appearance.

  • Recently seismic fragility analysis method has been widely used for the seismic probabilistic risk assessment of infrastructures such as nuclear power plants, buildings and bridges because of its probabilistic characteristics. Furthermore, this technique has been applied to large-scale social systems consisted of each infrastructures by combing GIS. In this paper, the applicability of this technique to domestic infrastructural systems was studied. The transportation network was selected as one of these domestic infrastructural systems. Example studies were peformed about Changwon city. Nonlinear time history analysis, with a maximal likelihood approach were conducted to establish the fragility curves of each infrastrucures (bridges). GIS analysis was also applied to the analysis of whole infrastructural systems. The results show that it is very useful to predict seismic probabilistic risk assessment of this domestic transportation network. However, it also shows that further studies such as more suitable damage criterion to domestic structure and precise nonlinear analysis techniques should be developed to predict more precise results.

  • In this paper, we propose pyramid appearance and global structure action descriptors on both RGB and depth motion history images and a model-free method for human action recognition. In proposed algorithm, we firstly construct motion history image for both RGB and depth channels, at the same time, depth information is employed to filter RGB information, after that, different action descriptors are extracted from depth and RGB MHIs to represent these actions, and then multimodality information collaborative representation and recognition model, in which multi-modality information are put into object function naturally, and information fusion and action recognition also be done together, is proposed to classify human actions. To demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method, we evaluate it on MSR Action3D and DHA datasets, the well-known dataset for human action recognition. Large scale experiment shows our descriptors are robust, stable and efficient, when comparing with the-state-of-the-art algorithms, the performances of our descriptors are better than that of them, further, the performance of combined descriptors is much better than just using sole descriptor. What is more, our proposed model outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on both MSR Action3D and DHA datasets.
