Simulation Analysis for Improving the Logistics Flow in an Chemical Storage System (석유화학 창고 시스템 내 물류 흐름 개선을 위한 시뮬레이션 분석)

  • In this study, to improve the logistics flow of existing given chemical logistics warehouse, four logistics flow alternatives were proposed to minimize truck interference by building simulation model. The simulation model for chemical storage warehouse was built to evaluate system performance. Among the four new improved alternatives based on the basic model, the model with the same truck's pathways and locations of facilities identified an increase in the number of interferences but a decrease in daily working hours as the number of resources in a particular facility increases. Therefore, the three groups were classified as 'efficiency', 'complementary', and 'safety' based on the daily working hours, and the ratio of trucks entering two types of logistics warehouse was set in consideration of future market fluctuations. For each of the six types, the optimal number of resources was selected as the number of resources in the facilities with the least number of interferences in the basic model and the evaluation measures and characteristics set in this study were compared and analyzed. As a result, the Alternative 4 model operating the underground roadway produced interference between 17.0% and 36.4% of the basic model, with 113.3% of the interior loadspace.

  • Most of the medium-size ships are powered by large-bore, long-stroke, slow-speed and two-stroke diesel engines in order to improve the fuel efficiency. Such a propulsion plant develops low-frequency excitation forces/moments of significant magnitude. A RO/RO car/truck carrier is also one of the cases. In this paper, the rational methods for analysis of vertical and coupled horizontal-torsional vibrations are presented. Taking account of unusual characteristics of the hull form and structural systems, the emphasis is put on modelling methods based on beam analogy, calculation of system parameters such as added mass and its center, polar added-mass moment of inertia, shear coefficient of hull sections and coupling degree in antisymmetric modes, and modal analysis of forced vibrations.

Analysis of Amount of Energy Loss for a Dock System in the Cold Distribution Center (냉동 물류 창고 내 도크시스템을 통한 에너지 손실량 분석)

  • In this study, energy loss due to ventilation load in the dock system was analyzed through simulation. Also, flow generated in the dock system of the warehouse was measured using manufactured measuring devices. Numerical simulation was conducted by simulating the most common picking tasks by examining the actual working environment. Incompressible and unsteady turbulent flows were assumed, and the turbulence model was the k-e standard model. Proper grid was selected through grid dependency test. Measurement was conducted using Honeywell and Vaisala sensors, and flow and temperature inside the warehouse were measured and compared with simulation results to validate simulation. When comparing amount of loss occurring in two hours and amount of loss occurring in 15 minutes, docking time of the former was eight times longer but energy loss was 3.8 times lower. Ventilation load occurring during the initial period after opening docking system accounted for a large proportion of total ventilation load. Also, comparing the load when the dock was closed and the load when the truck was parked, ventilation load was significantly higher than load due to heat conduction from the wall. Therefore, in improving the docking system, it is effective to reduce the gap by improving compatibility of the docking system and truck, rather than wall material.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the operational time and productivity of logging operation by chain saw, yarder attached on tractor, tower-yarder, mini-truck, mini-forwarder, and chipping operations by mini-chipper, large-chipper in order to develop the efficient logging operation system for utilization of forest-biomass. As a result, the average felling and bucking time using chain saw at the site 1 and 2 was observed to be 182.7 sec/cycle and 518.5 sec/cycle respectively. The average yarding time was 202.5 sec/cycle using yarder attached on tractor and 295.1 sec/cycle using tower-yarder. The average forwarding time was 2,073 sec/cycle using mini-truck and 2,248.4 sec/cycle using mini-forwarder. The operational time of felling and bucking using chain-saw can be delayed according to the direction of fallen trees. The selection of felling direction is very important to yarding operation because the direction between width-yarding and felling are interrelated. Productivity can be improved through educating and training operators in the yarding operations. Mini-forwarder is needed to use because of higher productivity and lower cost than mini-truck. The operational productivity of felling and bucking by chain saw was $66.96m^3/man{\cdot}day$ and $43.86m^3/man{\cdot}day$ at site 1 and 2 respectively. The yarding productivity was $5.68m^3/man{\cdot}day$ by yarder attached on tractor, $10.74m^3/man{\cdot}day$ by tower-yarder. The forwarding productivity was $21.29m^3/man{\cdot}day$ by mini-truck, $28.57m^3/man{\cdot}day$ by mini-forwarder. The chipping productivity was $4.42m^3/man{\cdot}day$ by mini-chipper, $21.87m^3/man{\cdot}day$ by large-chipper.

Comparison of reaction force and contact pressure on design truck load of slab bridge supported by MSEW abutment (보강토교대로 지지된 슬래브교의 설계 활하중에 대한 반력 및 접지압 검토)

  • In this study, the structural analysis was conducted to the comparison of reaction force and contact pressure on the design truck load (DB-24 and KL-510) of slab bridge supported by MSEW abutment. As a result of the structural analysis, the reaction force acting on the abutment at the continuous bridge was reduced rather than the simple span bridge. The reaction force due to the dead load was estimated to be about twice as large as that of the live load, and the influence of the live load on the total reaction force was relatively small. The contact pressure of the MSEW abutment was estimated to be the largest in the simple span bridge. The influence of contact pressure on the type of live load was relatively small. Therefore, it is considered to be more advantageous to apply the MSEW abutment to the continuous bridge than to the simple span bridge because the contact pressure acting on the abutment on the continuous bridge is estimated to be small. Since the reaction force and the load sharing ratio acting on the MSEW abutment depending on various conditions, it is necessary to examine the contact pressure in various types of bridges and specifications.

  • Today's rapid industrialization and population concentration in cities lead to a vast economic growth, and consequently, people's increased desire of spending demands abundant and diverse food. As a result in Korea, annual food waste is 4.1 million tons (24.6% of household waste) and daily food waste amount to 11,397 tons which is equivalent to 1,400 loads of 8-ton truck. It is best to recycle toed waste as manure, forage, and fuel than reclamation but separate collection of food waste is very difficult by reason of water content. So only a little portion of food waste from large-scaled restaurants and cafeterias that handle food waste relatively well. requirement for recycling food wastes into forage and manure needless to say, reduction activity is best way. Therefore, large-scaled restaurants and cafeterias need to seek plans to minimize food resource waste thus reducing the cost and waste processing cost by implementing appropriate reduction program.

Rapid-to-deploy reconfigurable wireless structural monitoring systems using extended-range wireless sensors

  • Wireless structural monitoring systems consist of networks of wireless sensors installed to record the loading environment and corresponding response of large-scale civil structures. Wireless monitoring systems are desirable because they eliminate the need for costly and labor intensive installation of coaxial wiring in a structure. However, another advantageous characteristic of wireless sensors is their installation modularity. For example, wireless sensors can be easily and rapidly removed and reinstalled in new locations on a structure if the need arises. In this study, the reconfiguration of a rapid-to-deploy wireless structural monitoring system is proposed for monitoring short- and medium-span highway bridges. Narada wireless sensor nodes using power amplified radios are adopted to achieve long communication ranges. A network of twenty Narada wireless sensors is installed on the Yeondae Bridge (Korea) to measure the global response of the bridge to controlled truck loadings. To attain acceleration measurements in a large number of locations on the bridge, the wireless monitoring system is installed three times, with each installation concentrating sensors in one localized area of the bridge. Analysis of measurement data after installation of the three monitoring system configurations leads to reliable estimation of the bridge modal properties, including mode shapes.

Advanced Structural Monitoring System Using Fiber Optic Sensors (광섬유 센서를 이용한 첨단 구조계측)

  • Recently, the interest in safety assessment of civil infrastructures is increasing in Korea. Especially, as bridge structures become large-scale, it is necessary to monitor and maintain the safety state of bridges, which requires the monitoring system that can make a long-term measurement during the service time of bridge. In this paper, advanced fiber optic sensors for long-term measurement, setup techniques of bridge monitoring system and the assessment of measured data are introduced. Attached or embedded optical fiber sensors to structural members of small and big structures including Sung San Bridge are surveyed. For the Sung San Bridge, the responses of the fiber optic sensors by 30 ton weigh truck loads with various speeds ate measured. Monitoring system is also applied to the mock-up of bridges. The monitoring capability of the advanced fiber optic sensor system was confirmed.

  • The goal of this study is to replace the current forward 2-piece propeller shaft of 8 ton large truck made of steel with 1-piece composite propeller shaft. A low cost Glass/Epoxy composite propeller shafts were successfully developed, which satisfy requirements such as the capacity of static torque transfer, fatigue strength and bending natural frequency. Devising secure joining method of a composite tube and metal yoke was the most critical issue in successful development of a high torque composite propeller shaft. In this study, joining method using thermal interference fit was adopted for composite to metal joint. Optimum conditions of heating temperature and interference level of thermal interference fit were determined from thermal stress analysis using 3D finite element method. Static torsion test, fatigue test, RPM and balance test were performed to verify the design.

  • A brake spider in an irregular shape, which is used as a part in the braking system of a vehicle like a big truck and a trailer, is subjected to a large torque and hence requires both strength and endurance over the brake heat. Manufacture of this product in practice is generally composed of hot forging processes and machining. At the present study, two or more processes were considered for the hot forging. With an initial circular billet, blocker and finisher processes were analyzed using the rigid-plastic finite element method and also in addition to the preforming process. Proper forging processes to manufacture an irregular product without forging defects, which are preforming, blocker and finisher, were discussed and commented upon.
